Meaning in English : (tat) The mind, though (chitram) variegated (asa.nkhyeya) by innumerable (vaasanaabhiH) residua (api) also, (paraartham) serve the purpose of other = the soul (sa.nhatya-kaaritvaat) since it is made by the combination of Qualities.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tat) That (etat) this (chittam) mind, though (chitriikritam) variegated by (asa.nkhyeyaabhiH) innumerable (vaasanaabhiH eva) residua = residual potencies (api) also, (paraartham) is for the another i.e., (bhoga-apavargaartham) serves the purpose of experience = enjoyment and salvation (parasya) of others i.e., the Soul; (na) it does not (svaartham) serve any of its own purposes, (sa.nhatya-kaaritvaat) since it is a combination of objects and acts as a combination (grahavat) as a house. So, (chittena) by mind, (sa.nhatyakaariNaa) being made and act by combination, (na bhavitavyam) cannot (svaarthena) fulfill its own objects. (sukha-chittam) Mental phenomena of pleasure (na) is not (sukhaartham) for the pleasure of mind; (na) nor (j~naanam) the knowledge generated by the coloring of objects with mind and distinctive knowledge (j~naanaartham) for the knowledge of the mind. (etat ubhayam api) Both these enjoyment = pleasure and knowledge are also (paraartham) for the purpose of “other”. (cha) And (puruShaH) the Soul (yaH) who (arthavaan) is purposeful (arthena) being related to the purposes (bhogena) of enjoyment (cha) and (apavargeNa) salvation, (saH) he (eva) alone (paraH) is “other”. (saamaanya-maatram) Any other common object (which is made of = generated by the combination of objects) (na) cannot be (paraH) “other”.
(yat tu) Those persons (vainaashikaH) who advocate momentary theory (udaaharet) give the example of (ki~nchit) any (saamaanya-maatram) another common object as (param) “other” (svaruupeNa) by its nature, then (tat sarvam) those all objects (syaat) will be proved as (paraartham eva) objects serving the purpose of another alone (sa.nhatyakaaritvaat) since those all are also made of and acts as a combination. On the other hand (yaH tu) who, however, (asau) this (puruShaH) Soul (paraH visheShaH) denoted by “other” is different from mind, (saH) he (na) is not (sa.nhatyakaarii iti) made of a combination of other objects and not acts as a combination
Vedic Commentary in English : In the commentary of the last aphorism, Seer Vyaasa mentioned that however, the mind appears in the form of external objects, knowable (=mind) and knower (=Soul), but these three objects are distinct in form, and the intellectual who knows the external objects, mind, Soul as different from one another, they are the real cognisors. Here the question arises when the mind is also known as a knower, then how is it proper to accept the conscious Soul distinct from the mind, and one with such type of knowledge is the real cognisor? In this regard Seer Patanjali said that though the mind is variegated by innumerable residual potencies since eternity since it is made by combination, it serves the purpose of experience and salvation of another (= conscious Soul) who is different from it.
It is the accepted principle of scriptures that the object which is made by the combination of other objects is not for the purpose of self, but it serves the purpose of some other who is different from it. Mind is also made by the combination of atoms of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia, so, it is for the purpose of others. Seer Kapila said in Saankhya Philosophy — "sa.nhata-paraarthatvaat" (1.140) i.e., combined objects serve the purpose of other than self, as a bed, etc. Now, who is that 'other'? it is clarified as —
sa.nhatapraarthatvaat puruShasya. (Saankhya Philosophy 1.66)
In this context, while explaining the production process by work-reason in the direct and reverse sequence, it is established that all the combined products = made from the Qualities are for "others", and that "other" is the Soul for whose experience and salvation, the production process of the world takes place.
In this way, the mind is made from the combination of Qualities of Illumination, etc., and works accordingly. In this mind, residual potencies, of innumerable births, are also variegated since eternity. Even then it does not serve any of its own purposes, since it is the product of inanimate Matter and is also inanimate only; and the inanimate object does not have any own purpose. This mind also serves the purposes of experience and salvation of the conscious Soul, who is different from it. It means that in all births, an experience of pleasure and pains is for the Soul who is also lord of this mind. The reason given for this is that since it is a combination of objects and acts as a combination only, just like the house, etc. hence is for the purpose of others. As the house is made from different materials, is for the purpose of others, in the same way, a mind made from the three Qualities of Illumination, etc. is for the purpose of "others". It is further clarified that on account of the favourableness of objects, the manifestation of pleasure in the mind is not for the purpose of the mind, i.e., the experience of pleasure and pain is not for the inanimate mind; and in the same way, the knowledge generated by the coloring of mind with the objects and distinctive knowledge is not for the purpose of mind; it means that neither the experience is for the mind, nor the knowledge and resulting salvation is for the mind. These both - experience and salvation are for others who are different from the mind; and that "other", who has the purposes of experience and salvation, is the conscious Soul. Here it is to be understood that "other" is only and only conscious Soul, not any combined object other than the mind.
If some opponents of the momentary theory say that what is the need of accepting a conscious Soul for the term "other"? Any common object other than the mind can be "other". As the house is for the experience of any human who is different from home, in the same way, it is to be understood in the case of mind. The reply to this conception is that if any object, which is the product of Matter, is accepted as "other", then that object being a combination of Qualities will become for the purpose of other. See, all the products of Matter, bodies of living beings, organs, mind, etc. are made from different combinations of Qualities, so, all are combined products; and none of the combined objects is able to serve its own purpose. On the other hand, the conscious Soul is more subtle than the Matter, and is different from Matter; he is not made from any combination of Qualities of Illumination, etc., or any other imagined object, hence unique in himself. He alone is involved in the life-cycle and is "other" for whose purposes of experience and salvation, GOD creates this universe from the material cause Matter, and makes available the fruits, in the form of pleasure and pain, as per his vehicle of actions.
In the same way, GOD is not acceptable from the word "other", since Seer Patanjali had accepted him, on the basis of Vedic scriptures, untouched from afflictions, actions, fruition, and their potencies (Ref - klesha-karma-vipaakaashairaparaamriShTaH puruSha-visheSha iishvaraH. Yoga 1.24). So, GOD can not be proved as an experiencer of residual potencies existing in the mind and their fruits.
In this way of proving the existence of an independent conscious Soul, Seer Patanjali is now describing the subject of salvation for the Soul.
