Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yathaa) As (udbhavena) on production = growth (triNaa~Nkurasya) of gross seeds (praavriShi) in the rainy season, (biijasattaa) the existence of seeds (tat) of those grass blades (anumiiyate) is inferred, (tathaa) so, in case of (yasya) person whose (roma-harSha-ashrupaatau) hairs stand on the end in the body and tears flow, (mokSha-maarga-shravaNena) on hearing the path of complete independence = salvation, (drishyete) are seen, (iti anumiiyate) it is inferred that (tatra api) in the mind of that person also, (asti) there are (karma-abhinirvarttitam) virtuous acts by way of performance of limbs of yoga in the present and previous lives (apavarga-bhaagiiyam) tending towards salvation and (visheSha-darshana-biijam) seeds = cause of recognition of distinctive knowledge. (aatma-bhaava-bhaavanaa) The curiosity as to nature and knowledge of the Soul is (svaabhaavikii) naturally (pravarttate) manifested (tasya) in him. (yasya abhaavaat) In the absence of the seeds of distinctive knowledge (idam uktam) it is said that — "(muktvaa) By leaving the (svabhaavam) existence of the self = Soul, (eShaam) his (ruchiH bhavati) interest is (puurva-pakShe) in the principle of mind (since mind itself is knower alone as per opponent) (doShaat) on account of defects of nescience, (cha) and (aruchiH bhavati) does not take interest (nirNaye) in the decision of distinction of Nature and Soul.
(tatra) Here (aatma-bhaava-bhaavanaa) the curiosity as to the nature and knowledge of the Soul means — "(kaH aasam) Who was (aham) I in the previous births? (katham aasam) How was (aham) I in those previous births? (kimsvit idam) What is my true form in the present life? (kathamsvit idam) Why this body is received in the present life? (ke bhaviShyaamaH) What shall I be in the future? (vaa) And (katham bhaviShyaamaH iti) How shall I become so?" (saa tu) That curiosity about the self = Soul, however, (nivarttate) ceases (visheSha-darshinaH) in the case of Yogi who attainted the distinctive knowledge. (kutaH) How and why? (eShaH) These (vichitraH pariNaamaH) varied changes in the form of different bodies during all times i.e., in past, present, and future (chittasya eva) are the characteristics of mind alone (i.e., till the mind is conjoined with the Soul). (puruShaH) The Soul, (tu) however, (asatyaam) in the absence of (avidyaayaam) the nescience, (suddhaH) is pure and (aparaamriShTaH) is not touched (chitta-dharmaiH iti) by the characteristics of the mind.
(tataH) Therefore (aatma-bhaava-bhaavanaa) the curiosity of nature and knowledge of the self = Soul (asya kushalasya) of this true cognisor yogi (nivarttate iti) completely ceases.
Vedic Commentary in English : The devotee has understood the existence of the Soul who is different from the Mind. The main objective of that Soul is salvation = complete independence, not worldly experiences. He had experienced worldly experiences in his continuous life-cycle since eternity. In this life-cycle, he had always experienced pain only, which started from living in the womb and continued till death, in one way or another. In this continuous pain, whenever he had experienced some pleasure in between, even then there was pain behind those pleasure feelings/moments. (Ref - pariNaama-taapa-sa.nskaara-duHkhaiH-guNavritti-virodhaat-cha duHkhameva sarvam vivekinaH. Yoga 2.15)
On the other hand, there is a state of permanent pleasure for the conscious Soul, as against the life-cycle, which is called salvation. This Yoga Philosophy describes the fruit of salvation. Now Seer Patanjali is specifically describing the achievement of salvation in the coming aphorisms.
Seer Patanjali said that the curiosity of yogi, who had cognized the distinction between the mind and Soul, ceases. In the state of Egoism Cognitive Trance, when the mind, by getting colored with the conscious Soul, cognizes the Soul, then the yogi gets the knowledge of the conscious Soul who is totally different in form, from the inanimate mind. Such yogi, at that time, cognizes the distinction between the mind and Soul. Only that yogi is able to achieve this state whose has the purpose of achieving salvation. Such yogi is capable of ceasing his curiosity about nature and knowledge of self = Soul.
It is clearly said in the scriptures that salvation is not achievable in one birth, but one has to put effort into it, in many lives. Different devotees take different times to achieve salvation on account of the adoption of means at mild, medium, and intense levels, and having Supreme Desire-less-ness at mild, middle, and intense levels. So, it is clear that all devotees are not able to achieve salvation in the present lifetime.
Now the question that arises here is - who had put efforts into the achievement of salvation in the previous births? While replying to this Seer Vyaasa said that as on the production of grass during the rainy season, it is inferred that seeds of grass existed there; in the same way by hearing about the salvation i.e., its means, the achievement of permanent pleasure in the salvation which is devoid of worldly pains, whose hairs stand on the end in the body and tears flow, then it should be known that such person had put efforts for achieving salvation and performed accessories of yoga, in his previous births. Such a person has a curiosity about nature and knowledge of self in a natural way. On the other hand, those who had not put any such effort in their previous lives, those who have interests in worldly pleasures/objects and achievements; such person does not have any type of interest in the distinctive knowledge of Soul and Matter; for him, the ultimate goal is the pleasure that is achievable, in the present life, through the material objects.
What type of curiosity about the nature and knowledge of self = Soul exists in the mind of a yogi? While clarifying this it had been said by Seer Vyaasa — "Who was I in the previous births? Why was I in that birth?", these are the curiosities about the previous births; "What is my real form in this present birth? Why this body is received in the present birth?" is the curiosity about the present birth; and "What shall I be in the future? How and why, I shall be there?" is the type of curiosity about the future births.
From the curiosity of previous birth, the yogi has knowledge about the unchangeable conscious form of the Soul; he knows that the Soul receives various types of bodies in such births. He knows that I, as a conscious object, was there in all such previous birth, and I had received all such bodies to experience the fruits of my vehicle of actions. And when my virtue and vice came in a balanced state after the experience, then I received this life-state of human, as per the fruition system of GOD. If on the basis of curiosity about past lives, it is said that the yogi knows about his previous births and also knows the accumulated vehicles of actions for receiving such previous births, this can be possible in the case of some specific yogis. If such type of knowledge is said, with regard to the form of the Soul, then the form of the Soul remains the same in all bodies, but he receives the various types of bodies on account of the primary vehicle of actions accumulated in the mind, and he knows this in general. But the answer to the question "Why was I in those previous births?", is that the yogi gets the knowledge of previous births, and reasons for achieving such birth i.e., the virtue-vice vehicle of actions. Seer Patanjali had accepted the attainment of knowledge of previous life-states by performing Sanyama over the residual potencies in aphorism 3.18.
From the curiosity about the present birth, it should be understood that what is a form of organs, body, mind, etc. received in the present birth? What is their relation with the Soul? What is my real form? And for what reasons this body is received? It means that at the time of death in the previous life-state, what was the position of my un-fruited vehicle of actions, on the basis of which this human body is received? etc. in this way curiosity about the present life is resolved.
With regard to curiosity about the future, the questions are "What shall I be in the future?" and "How shall I become so?" i.e., he thinks about his present acts and knows the position of afflictions in the mind - i.e., in which state (= dormant, tenuous, alternated, fully operative) these are? He also thinks about the accumulated vehicle of actions on account of these afflictions, and thinks that what will be my = Soul's position after departure from this body, in such state if death takes place at present? Which type of bodies will be received on the basis of my accumulated vehicle of actions? Or have I made the afflictions like the burnt-up seeds? Whether the afflictions and acts (virtuous, vicious, and mixed up) ceased? (Aphorism 4.30); Whether my acts are devoid of virtue and vice? (Aphorism 4.7) so, that I will be able to exist in my own form and get freedom from the life-death-life-cycle? Since the yogi clearly knows that involvement in the life-cycle continues till the Soul remains connected with the mind; so, this life-cycle is characteristic of the mind which is variegated with infinite residual potencies. When the afflictions will get burnt-up then the mind will become latent in its own cause Matter and with the result Soul will get freedom from this life-cycle and achieve salvation, since the Soul is pure in his own form. (Ref - sattvapuruShayoH shuddhisaamye kaivalyam. (Yoga 3.55))
In this way, the yogi who had cognized the distinction between the mind and Soul in the Egoism Cognitive Trance is known as a special viewer, and his curiosity about the nature and knowledge of self = Soul ceases.
