Preface to Sutra in English : guNaadhikaarakramasamaaptau kaivalyamukta.m tatsvaruupam-avadhaaryate—
Meaning in English : (kaivalyam) Salvation (uktam) is said to be achieved (guNa-adhikaara-krama-parisamaaptau) on cessation of the authority of Qualities = succession of functioning of Qualities. (svaruupam) Nature of (tat) the salvation (avadhaaryate) is now ascertained —
Sutra in English : puruShaarthashuunyaanaa.m guNaanaa.m pratiprasavaH kaivalya.m svaruupapratiShThaa vaa chitishaktiriti. 34.
Meaning in English : (kaivalyam) Salvation is (pratiprasavaH) latency of (guNaanaam) characteristic changes in the form of mind etc., (puruShaartha-shuunyaanaam) which become devoid of an object towards Soul, in their root cause = Qualities alone, (vaa) that means (chiti-shaktiH) the conscious object = Soul (svaruupa-pratiShThaa iti) is established in his own pure conscious form only.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : All the Qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia and their characteristics change becoming devoid of their purpose, and the Soul becoming pure and full of knowledge being established in his own true form i.e., joined with the natural powers and qualities and staying in the nature = form, omniscience and eternal bliss-full-ness of the pure Supreme Soul GOD is called salvation. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumika - on emancipation).
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : kRRitabhogaapavargaaNaa.m puruShaarthashuunyaanaa.m yaH pratiprasavaH kaaryakaaraNaatmanaa.m guNaanaa.m tatkaivalyam, svaruupapratiShThaa punarbuddhisattvaanabhisambandhaatpuruShasya chitishaktireva kevalaa, tasyaaH sadaa tathaivaavasthaana.m kaivalyamiti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yah prati-prasavaH) The latency of (guNaanaam) the Qualities (kaarya-kaaraNaatmakaanaam) available in the form of characteristic changes from gross objects to mind, (krita-bhoga-apavargaaNaam) when having performed the function of providing experience and salvation for the Soul, hence (puruShaartha-shuunyaanaam) became devoid of the purpose of the Soul, (tat) that is (kaivalyam) salvation = absolute freedom. Further, (puruShasya svaruupa-pratiShThaa) establishment of Soul in his own from i.e., (buddhi-sattva-anabhisambandhaat) not coming into contact with the mind (punaH) again, and (kevalaa chiti-shaktiH eva) remain as the conscious Soul alone; and (tasyaaH) that position (avasthaanam) remain (tathaiva) in the same state (sadaa) continuously (kaivalyam) is salvation. (iti) It denotes the end of this scripture.
Vedic Commentary in English : Yogi, by knowing the superiority of the Conscious Soul by the discriminative knowledge of mind and Soul, seeing the defects of contact with the changeable Qualities of Illumination, etc. becoming desireless towards the Qualities by the practice of Supreme Desirelessness, restraining all the modifications, exists in the form of conscious GOD by his conscious form in the Ultra-cognitive trance. In this state, his mind becomes devoid of all types of potencies toward the Qualities of Illumination, through the practice of intense Supreme Desirelessness, which means the residual potencies of the mind reach the burnt-up state. In this state, by achieving the burnt-up state of all potencies of mind, the succession of changes of Qualities of Illumination, etc. ends for this yogi.
For this state, Seer Vyaasa said — "tadevam-bhuutam chittamavasitaadhikaaram-aatmakalpena vyavatiShThate pralayam va gachchhati-iti" (Vyaasa commentary 1.5) i.e., the mind which is devoid of modifications and residual potencies, and having fulfilled its purposes towards the Soul, exists as pure like the Soul and on the departure of Soul from the current body, it gets latent into its material cause Matter. This state has been said as "puruShaartha-shuunyanaam guNaanaam pratiprasavaH" in this aphorism. See, the purpose of Qualities is to provide experience and salvation to the Soul, and this purpose of Qualities is termed "Purushaartha" = serving the Soul. The succession of changes of Qualities are mind, egoism, organs, subtle elements, and gross objects. These objects, existing in the form of cause-work, serve the purposes of knower = conscious Soul. Till the Soul achieves salvation, experience in the form of pleasure and pain continues for him. And when the Soul, by performing yoga, achieves the state of freedom from the bonds of life by cessation of afflictions and acts, puts efforts to achieve its ultimate purpose, and brings his residual potencies in the burnt-up state, then the Qualities of Illumination, etc. become devoid of objects towards the Soul; which means the Soul achieves the state of salvation and these Qualities have no purpose remaining towards Soul — this state is called a state of becoming devoid of an object. In this way, the mind, the product of Qualities that have no purpose for the specific Soul, becomes pure like the Soul. Seer Patanjali had clearly said in the last aphorism of the last chapter - "sattvapuruShayoH shuddhi-saamye kaivalyam-iti" (Yoga 3.55) i.e., salvation is achieved when the purity of mind and Soul becomes equal. The Soul is pure by his form, and till the purity of mind is not achieved as that of the Soul, the achievement of salvation is not possible. The purity of mind is explained by Seer Vyaasa in that aphorism as - "yadaa nirdhuutarajas-tamomalam buddhi-sattvam puruShasyaanyataa-pratiitimaatraadhikaaram dagdhakleshabiijam bhavati tadaa puruShasya shuddhi-saaruupyam-ivaapannam bhavati, tadaa puruShasyopacharita-bhogaabhaavaH suddhiH. i.e., when the mind with Illumination Quality, in which the impurities of Qualities of Activity and Inertia are removed, has the notion of distinctness of Soul only, and all seeds of afflictions have been burnt-up, then the mind achieves the state of purity similar to that of Soul only. At that time absence of enjoyment attributable to the Soul, is the purity of the Soul". So, the mind which has become pure like the Soul, has the only work remaining i.e., becoming latent into its material cause Qualities of Illumination, etc. In this way, the latency of the mind into Qualities is known as the salvation of the Soul.
Some of the commentators have said this as the salvation of Qualities of Illumination etc., which is against the scriptural principles. Even this conception is against the inner testimonies of Vyaasa commentary. The Qualities of Illumination etc. are inanimate, and there is no bondage or salvation for these. See, the creation of the universe is done by GOD from the material cause of Qualities of Illumination, etc. So, these Qualities get produced in the form of the universe, as per the system of GOD, in every creation; and at the time of the holocaust, every object of the universe becomes latent into its cause in the opposite sequence. The Qualities though get destroyed for the Souls, who had achieved salvation, yet are available for all other Souls and provide experience and salvation to them (Ref - Yoga 2.22), which means the succession of changes in the Qualities continue without obstruction. And in his commentary to 2.23 Seer Vyaasa had clearly said - "yaa tu draShTuH svaruupo-palabdhiH so.apavargaH" i.e., when the cognition of the nature = form of the Soul is achieved, that is the salvation of the Soul. So, salvation is of the Soul, not of the Qualities.
When the mind gets latent into its material cause, then what happens? this has been explained in the next part of the aphorism - "svaruupa-pratiShThaa vaa chitishaktiH". Here the word "vaa" does not mean 'alternatively', it clarifies the meaning of the previous part of the aphorism. It means that the conscious Soul gets established in his own pure conscious form. While explaining further in this regard Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote - "Soul becoming pure and full of knowledge being established in his own true form i.e., joined with the natural powers and qualities, and staying in the nature = form, omniscience, and eternal bliss-full-ness of the pure Supreme Soul GOD, is called salvation". It must be understood here that without getting the mind, which had fulfilled its objects, latent into its material cause Matter, the next state is not possible. When the yogi, whose afflictions and acts have ceased, and whose residual potencies have reached the burnt-up state, departs from the current physical body, then his mind along with the subtle body gets latent into Qualities of Illumination, etc. This is the description of Soul at that point of time, i.e., he gets established in his own pure conscious form only. The soul is said as conscious in the Vedic scriptures.
evam vaa are ayamaatmaanantaro.abaahyaH kritsnaH praGYaanaghana eva.
Brihadaaranyaka UpaniShada 4.5.13.
i.e., this Soul is knowledge-full and conscious only without any distinction. Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote in chapter 9 of Light of Truth that the physical body does not exist in salvation. Along with the physical body, the subtle body which is the result of Qualities of Illumination, etc., also does not exist. He further clarified about the subtle body as - "this subtle body remains associated with the Soul in the life-cycle. It is of two types - one physical, which is made of subtle elements = objects, the products of Qualities of Illumination, etc; the other is natural which is in the form of natural attributes and powers of Soul. This second non-physical subtle body remains in the salvation. And Soul experience the pleasure of salvation by this second body." It means that the natural body in the form of properties of the Soul exists in salvation. How is that body? In this regard, Swami Dayanand gives the testimony of Shatapatha Brahamana —
shriNvan shrotram bhavati, sparshayan tvag-bhavati, pashyan chakShurbhavati, rasayan rasanaa bhavati, jighran ghraaNam bhavati, manvaano mano bhavati, bodhayan budhiH-bhavati, chetaya.nchittam-bhavati aha.nkurvaaNo.aha.nkaaro bhavati.
i.e., by virtue of his innate powers, an emancipated soul has the principle of hearing when he wants to hear, the principle of touch when he wants to feel, the principle of sight when he wishes to see, the principle of taste when he desires to taste, the principle of smell when he wants to smell, the principle of thought for thinking, the principle of justice for ascertaining the truth, the principle of memory for remembering, the principle of individuality for feeling his individuality. He can possess this so-called - composed of the principles of sensation and thought, etc., at his will. Just as when the soul is embodied, it depends upon his physical body and bodily organs to carry out his will, so, does he enjoy the bliss of emancipation through the use of his innate power.
Query:- What is the nature of this power, and how many kinds is it?
Solution:- Really it is of one kind, but it may be said to consist of the following 24 varieties:- strength, energy, attraction, suggestion, motion, intimidation, analytic power, skill, courage, memory, discernment, desire, love, hatred, association, dissociation, dividing power, combining power, power of sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell, knowledge. By the help of these very powers, the soul attains and enjoys happiness even in Emancipation." (Light of Truth, Chapter 9)
So, the Soul by existing in his form, associated with his body of natural attributes and powers, gets associated with the form of GOD, His knowledge and bliss move in the omnipresent GOD without any obstruction. This is the state of salvation. This description of salvation, as given by Swami Dayanand, is based on the testimony of Chhandogya upaniShada—
atha ya eSha samprasaado.asmaat-shariiraat-samutthaaya param jyotiH-upasampadya svena ruupeNa-abhiniShpadyata. Chhandogya upaniShada 8.3.4.
i.e., this Soul on getting departed from this body and having achieved nearness of GOD, while existing in his form, moves in the omnipresent GOD as per his wish.
Seer Patanjali had accepted existence in the conscious form by the Soul even in the present body on restraint of all modifications (Ref - tadaa draShTuH svaruupe.avasthaanam. Yoga 1.3). But this existence of a conscious Soul in the conscious GOD is in the state of Ultra-cognitive trance; and this has been explained in our commentary to aphorism 1.3.
Some of the commentators have accepted the existence of the Soul in his conscious form only, but this confusion is on account of not understanding the Vedic scriptures. See, salvation is not possible without cognizance of GOD, and in this regard following testimonies are worth noting —
1. As per Yajurveda the means to overcome death is knowledge = cognizance of GOD -
tameva viditvaati mrityumeti naanyaH panthaa vidyate.ayanaaya. (Yaju 31.18)
2. Seer Vyaasa had given the opinion of Seer Aaduloumi in Vedaanta philosophy —
chiti tanmaatreNa tadaatmakatvaadi-iti-aaDulomiH. (Vedaanta 4.4.6)
i.e., on becoming devoid of defects of afflictions, the Soul existing in the pure conscious form gets related with the GOD. In the same way, the opinion of Seer Jaimini is given as —
braahmeNa jaiminiH-upanyaasaadibhyaH. (Vedaanta 4.4.5)
i.e., as per Seer Jaimini, in the state of salvation, the Soul gets proximity to GOD.
3. raso vai saH. rasam hi eva ayam labdhvaa aanandii bhavati.
Taitariiya upaniShada 2.7.
i.e., GOD is blissful, and this Soul gets blissed by having bliss from him. Such type of numerous testimonies are there in Vedic scriptures.
In the commentary to this aphorism, Seer Vyaasa had said - "tasyaaH sadaa tathaiva-avasthaanam kaivalyam-iti" i.e., and that position remain in the same state continuously is called as salvation. Here term "sadaa" is meant for 'continuously'; not for 'always' as given by many commentators and interpreted that salvation is achieved once and for all times. Salvation time is said as equal to the times of 36000 thirty-six thousand creations, i.e., the Soul remains in the state of salvation till the creation and destruction of the universe take place 36000 times. After that, he comes into the life-cycle again on the basis of his un-fruited vehicle of actions and takes the birth of a normal human being (Testimonies of taking rebirth after salvation are given in the commentary to aphorisms 1.24 and 4.32 above). Since the residual potencies do not get destroyed just like any physical gross objects, these only come in the burnt-up state which means that by the practice of Supreme Desirelessness and having cognizance of GOD in the Ultra-cognitive trance, afflictions, acts, and potencies become just like the burnt-up seeds and become incapable of producing their fruits. After the salvation period, the burnt-up state of residual potencies ends, and with the result, they again produce their fruits; and the Soul once again gets the life-cycle of birth and death as per the fruition system of the Supreme Lord GOD.
So, in this way by the latency of mind, which is the product of Qualities of Illumination, etc., into its material cause, the pure conscious Soul exists in his form, achieves the bliss, and knowledge of the Supreme Lord GOD continuously, and this is the state of salvation.
