Ancient seer Meaning in English : (kramaH) Succession is that which (grihyate) is cognized (avasaanena) by termination i.e., (aparaanten) by the end (pariNaamasya) of changes (kShaNa-aanantar-yaatmaa) which take place after the moments or after the flow of moments. (puraaNataa) The oldness, (ante) in the end, (navasya vastrasya) of new cloth, (hi) certainly, (na bhavati) cannot be there (ananubhuuta-krama-kShaNaa) without the experience of a succession of moments.
(cha) And (kramaH) succession is (driShTaH) seen (nityeShu) in the eternal objects. (ayam nityataa) This eternity (dvayii cha) is twofold — (kuuTastha-nityataa) the perfectional eternity = unchangeable/invariable eternity, (cha) and (pariNaami-nityataa) evolutionary eternity. (tatra) Of these (kuuTastha-nityataa) perfectional eternity (puruShasya) is of the Soul; and (pariNami-nityataa) evolutionary eternity (guNaanaam) is of Qualities. The question that arises here is — "How the Qualities can be said as eternal when changes take place in them?" To reply to this, it is said — (yasmin) The object whose (tattvam) basic substance (na) is not (vihanyate) destroyed (pariNamyamaane) even if changes take place, (tat) that object (nityam) is called as eternal. (cha) And (ubhayasya) both Soul and Qualities are (nityatvam) eternal only (tattva-anabhighaataat) since their basic form, nature, and substance is never destroyed.
(tatra) Now out of the two (kramaH) succession (pariNaam-aparaanta-nirgraahyaH) cognized at the cessation of changes (guNa-dharmeShu) of characteristics of Qualities, (buddhyaadiShu) in the form of mind and other formed objects, (labdha-paryavasaanaH) has an end; and (nityeShu dharmiShu guNeShu) in the eternal objects in the form of Qualities of Illumination etc. (alabdha-paryavasaanaH) succession has no end.
With regard to the perfectionally eternal object Soul, it is said — (kuuTastha-nityeShu) In case of perfectionally eternal (svaruupaastitaa) the existence of (svaruupa-maatra-pratiShTheShu mukta-puruSheShu) emancipated Souls established in their true nature, (anubhuuyate) is experienced (krameNa eva) by succession alone, (iti) therefore (tatra api) in their case also (alabdha-paryavasaanaH) succession has no end. And that succession (kalpitaH) is inferred there (upaadaaya) by taking (asti-kriyaam) the "act of existence" (shabda-priShThena iti) on the basis of the act attached to words.
(atha) Now the question is — (asti) Is there (vaa) or (na iti) not (krama-samaaptiH) an end to the succession (asya) of this (sa.nsaarasya) universe (varttamaanasya) existing (guNeShu) in the form of Qualities, (sthityaa gatyaa cha) having the characteristics of existence and motion? (etat) This question (avachaniiyam) cannot be answered in one word i.e., "yes" or "no". (katham) How? (asti prashnaH) There is a question (ekaanta-vachaniiyaH) which can be answered in one word - as (sarvaH jaataH) "Will all those beings which are born, (mariShyati iti) die ?" (aum bho iti) It is answered as "Yes". (atha) Now if somebody questions that (sarvaH mritvaa) "Will all those who died, (janiShyate iti) born again?" (etat) This question (vibhajya-vachaniiyam) is required to be answered by dividing it into two parts, as (kushalaH) the intellect for whom (pratyudita-khyaatiH) distinctive knowledge had been achieved and (kShiiNa-triShNaH) whose desires = residua had been destroyed, (na) will not (janiShyate) born again; (itaraH tu) all other beings, however, (janiShayte) will take birth again.
(tathaa) Similarly, (manuShya-jaatiH shreyasii) "Is the life-state of the man is good (vaa) or (na shreyasii iti) not ?" (evam paripriShTe) On being asked as above this (prashnaH) question is also (vibhajya-vachaniiyaH) required to be answered by division — "The life-state of man (shreyasii) is better (adhi-kritya) in comparison (pashuun) to the life-state of animals, but (na) is not better (adhi-kritya) in comparison to (devaan rishiin cha iti) the intellects and seers."
(ayam tu prashnaH) As to the question — (ayam sa.nsaaraH) Has this universe (antavaan) an end (atha) or (anantaH) has no end?"(avachaniiyaH iti) cannot be answered in one word as such. This is answered by division — (kushalasya) "For the yogi who had achieved constant discriminative knowledge, (asti) there is (sa.nsaara-krama-parisamaaptiH) cessation of the succession of the universe; and (itarasya na) for other living beings there is no end." (iti) so, (doShaH) there will be defect (anyataraavadharaNe) in accepting only one conception i.e., in formulating any other theory. (tasmaat) Hence (ayam prashnaH) this question (vyaakaraNiiyaH eva iti) is required to be answered by division alone.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the previous aphorism, a succession of changes of Qualities of Illumination, etc. are discussed. What is succession? This has been explained in this aphorism. Seer Patanjali said that succession is based on the group of moments and is cognized of the cessation of evolutionary changes. In fact, the "moment" is the smallest part of the time, which cannot be divided further. After a moment there is the next moment, and in this way continuity of the flow of moments takes place. Based on these moments, the succession is cognized at the end of change. The change is two-fold - gross and subtle in form. Changes taking place in the gross objects are cognized by normal persons, as — changes from earth-dust to lump, from lump to jar, from jar to jar-parts, and jar-parts to earth-dust are seen commonly. But changes which take place in the subtle objects, that are specifically cognized by the yogi. Even in some gross objects succession is not visible, there the succession is cognized by inference. As the new cloth gets destroyed after a time period, this succession of changes cannot be there without the experience of a succession of moments. So, the changes in the cloth are cognized by inference.
In the creation process of the universe there are changes in the form of conception of Pure-be-ness (= mahattatva), Egoism, Organs, Subtle-elements, Gross-objects from the Qualities of Illumination, etc. But these changes named as above are the particular state only. However there are innumerable changes in order to reach from the previous state to post-state of objects, and there is no naming for such changes; as there were innumerable changes that would have taken place in order to reach the state of 'conception of Pure-be-ness' (= mahattatva) from the equilibrium state of Qualities of Illumination, etc., in such state, it is totally nescience to say that state of 'conception of Pure-be-ness' (= mahattatva) from the state of Qualities of Illumination, etc., is one change only. In the same way, it is to be understood in case of the next changes. In this way, the knowledge of the succession of every change, which takes place after innumerable changes, from one state to another state, is achieved; and yogi can achieve the knowledge of these successions in the state of trance, otherwise, these are knowable by inference by the other persons. The knowledge of succession is achieved from the flow of changes. The starting of succession starts from the first moment of time and ends at the next moment of time. The moment where succession starts is known as 'previous' and the next moment is known as 'succeeding'.
The importance of succession can be understood from the fact that Seer Patanjali had advised the attainment of knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' by performing Sanyama over the moments and their succession, in aphorism 3.52. It means that real and proper knowledge of material objects cannot be obtained without the knowledge of the moments and their succession; and by the knowledge of these moments alone, the yogi is able to have the distinguished knowledge of objects which are not separable by genus and characteristics (Ref - aphorism 3.53).
Seer Vyaasa had advised the succession in the eternal objects along with the created = changeable objects. In the changeable objects, knowledge of succession is achieved as per the changes. But with regard to succession in the eternal objects, he clarified that eternity is of two types —
1. Perfectional Eternity — the object in which no changes take place, so, this is called unchangeable and perfectionally eternal. Conscious objects = Soul and GOD, both are known as perfectionally eternal.
2. Evolutionary Eternity — It means that though there are characteristic changes in the object, yet the basic substance does not get destroyed i.e., the materially original objects remain existing. The Qualities of Illumination etc. are known as evolutionary eternal. Even after the characteristic changes in the form of "conception of Pure-beness (= mahattatva)" and Egoism etc., the Qualities do not get destroyed and their existence remains, so, these are called evolutionary eternal.
In case of characteristic changes of Qualities of Illumination etc., in the form of mind and other knowable objects, the succession is known at the cessation of change has an end; however, succession known in the eternal objects in the form of Qualities of Illumination has no end. Here the question arises that the Soul is a perfectionally eternal object, and there is no change in him, then how the succession can be said in him? While clarifying this Seer Vyaasa said that the Souls who had achieved salvation, their existence is experienced by succession alone, and the end of succession is also not available there. But this knowledge of succession is based on the "existence in his own form" only; however, succession is not possible in the Soul.
Here the question arises whether there is an end to the succession of this universe, which is the result of Qualities of Illumination etc., or not? In the previous aphorism, it is said that there is a cessation of the succession of changes of Qualities for the yogi who got freed from the bonds of life-cycle, so, this question is raised here. Seer Vyaasa said that some questions can be answered in one word i.e., "Yes" or "No"; as "Will all those beings who are born, die?". There is only one answer to this question - "Yes", i.e., all those beings who are born, will die. On the other hand, there are questions that cannot be answered in one word, and are to be answered by dividing them into parts; such as "Will all those who died, be born again?" The answer to this question cannot be simply "Yes" or "No". It needs to be answered in division i.e., those intellectuals who have attained discrimination and whose desires had been destroyed, will not born again, and all other beings will take birth again.
In the same way with regard to the question - "Is the life-state of man good or not?"; is required to be answered in two parts i.e., - "The life-state of man is better in comparison to the life-state of animals, but it is not better in comparison to the intellects and seers."
In the same way the question - "Has this universe an end or not?", is required to be answered by division. For the yogi who has achieved constant discrimination, there is a cessation of the succession of the universe, i.e., for them, the succession of changes of Qualities of Illumination had ceased, so, they are not required to move in the life-cycle again; and for all other living beings this universe has no end i.e., life-cycle will remain to continue.
