Preface to Sutra in English : ETERNITY OF VEDAS
Sutra in English : ETERNITY OF VEDAS
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : Now eternity ofVedasis discussed. AsVedasare revealed (created) by GOD, hence, these are self-evident eternal only, since all powers of GOD are eternal only.
Question: - On this subject, some people object that sinceVedasconsists of words, stanza (=Chanda),pada, and sentences, therefore, these cannot be eternal. As a jar cannot be created without creation, so, is with words, since these are created. As a jar is created, so, words are also; in the same way,Vedaswould have been created by someone. Since these were not there before creation, and will not remain in the holocaust, therefore it is not proper to acceptVedasas eternal.
Ans: - This is not correct to say, since word is of two types – (1) eternal, and (2) non-eternal (= effect). The words, objects, and their relation, which exists in knowledge of GOD, are eternal only; and which are created by our imagination are effects (= non-eternal). Since whose knowledge and acts are proved by nature and are eternal, his all powers are also eternal only. By thisVedas, being is His knowledge, are eternal only, since knowledge of GOD can never be non-eternal.
Question:- When atoms of the entire universe disintegrate and come in caustic form, then the work form of this gross universe disappears; at that time books ofVedasalso do not exist, so, why do you accept eternity ofVedas?
Ans: - This objection is possible for things i.e., books, paper, ink, and form or words, and also for our actions, but not in respect ofVedas. SinceVedasare in the form of words, objects, and their relation, not in the form of ink, paper, books, and form of words. The object of ink etc. and an act of writing is created by human beings, so, these are non-eternal, andVedasalways exist in knowledge of GOD, so, we accept them as eternal. What is proved by this, is that on account of the non-eternity of study-teaching and books,Vedascannot be proved as non-eternal, since these always exist in the knowledge of GOD as per the maxim of seed and seed-bud.Vedasare manifested by GOD at the beginning of creation, and in the holocaust, these remain in non-manifestation form, so,Vedasalways remain eternal only. It has been said inRigveda—
सू॒र्या॒च॒न्द्र॒मसौ॑ धा॒ता य॑थापू॒र्वम॑कल्पयत् ।
suuryachandramasau dhaathaa yathapuurvamakalpayat.Rigveda 10.190.3
i.e., GOD had made the Sun and Moon just in the same manner as He had created them in previous creation. Here the Sun and Moon are for indication only, so, as in this creation word, letter, object, and relationship are inVedas, same as in the previous creation, and will also remain similar in the future. Since it is knowledge of GOD, it is eternal and remains in one form only. There is never another meaning/form of even a single word inVedas. So, as are four treaties ofRigvedaetc. in present — that word, object, relationship, pada, and form of words are present in which sequence in theseVedas, that type of sequence always remains, since knowledge of GOD is eternal, its increase, decrease, and opposite-ness never take place. For this reason,Vedasare to be accepted as eternal only.
Now about the subject of the eternity ofVedas, we give evidence of grammatical treatises, etc. Out of these, grammar is the main base and testimony for word knowledge ofSanskritand other languages. Its authors areSeer PaNiniandPatanjali.Seer Patanjali, author ofMahaabhaaShyawrote —
नित्याः शब्दा नित्येषु शब्देषु कूटस्थैरविचालिभिर्वर्णैर्भवितव्यमनपायोपजन-विकारिभिरिति।
nityaaH shabdaa nityeShu shabdeShu kuutasthairavichaalibhir-varNaiH bhavitavyamanapaayopajanavikaaribhiriti.MahabhaaShya, aahanika1.
i.e., words are eternal. Eternal words must consist of perpetual and changelessly immoveable letters, which are not liable to elision, augmentation, and substitution.
This statement frequently occurs inMahaabhaaShyafrom chapter 1 onwards. And –
श्रोत्रोपलब्धिर्बुद्धिनिर्ग्राह्यः प्रयोगेणाभिज्वलित आकाशदेशः शब्दः।
shrotropalabdhirbuddhi-nirgraahyaH prayogeNaabhijvalita aakaashadeshaH shabdaH.MahaabhaaShyacommentary on aphorism “a-i-uNa” ofashTaadhyaayii.
i.e., word or sound is that which is grasped through the ear, understood by the intellect, made manifest by being pronounced, and of which free space or cavity is the substratum.
From this all words which are eitherVaidika(found inVedas) orLaukika(words used by humans and came fromVedas) are eternal only, since these words consist of letters that are perpetual and immovable, and are not subject to elision, augmentation and substitution, so, on these accounts previously said words are eternal.
Question: - How can words be eternal, when rules of elision, augmentation, and substitution in words are there inGaNapaatha, ashTaadhyaayii, andMahaabhaaShya?
Ans: - The answer to this objection is given byseer Patanjali, author ofMahaabhaaShya—
सर्वे सर्वपदादेशा दाक्षीपुत्रस्य पाणिनेः। एकदेशविकारे हि नित्यत्वं नोपपद्यते॥
sarve sarvapadaadeshaa daakShiiputrasya paaNineH. ekdeshavikaare hi nityatvam nopapadyate. This statement is given on aphorism “daadhaaghvadaap” ofashTaadhyaayiiinMahaabhaaShya.
i.e., complete words (= complete group of letters) are merely substituted by other complete words (= complete group of letters); according toPaNini. The eternalness of words can never be established if a change takes place in one portion only. As “vedapaarago.abhavat” this group of letters is used in place of another group “vedapaara gam D su.n bhuu shap tip”. In this if somebody understands that the words/letter “am D u.n sh p i p” are elided from the group of letters, then that is an illusion of his mind since other groups of words are used in place of the previous group of words. This is the opinion ofseer PaNini, son ofdaakShii, who had writtenSanskritGrammar in the name ofashTaadhyaayii.Hence, all words are eternal only. Similar is the case when augmentation is done or ‘bho’ is used in place of ‘bhu’. Word is defined as – “which is perceived with organs of hearing, grasped by the intellect, made manifested by pronouncement, and resides in space”. This definition of the word proves that the word is eternal only. How? Since our acts of listening and pronunciation cease to exist after a particular moment because our speech changes from letter to letter. In this regard, there is a testimony ofMahaabhaaShya– “ekaika-varNa-vartinii vaak” i.e., speech resides in one letter at a time. The act of utterance terminates with the pronunciation of a particular letter. So, the action of speech is non-eternal, not words. So, words always remain part-less and in the same form.
Question: - The word that gets destroyed after pronunciation, and is not heard before pronunciation; as an act of pronunciation is non-eternal, similarly, a word can also be non-eternal. Then why do you accept the word as eternal?
Ans: - Words are pre-existing, just like space, everywhere, but these are not heard, till the act of pronunciation takes place. When words are pronounced by act of speech and breath, then words become manifested. As in the pronunciation of “gauH”, when the act of pronunciation is at “g”, then it is not at “au”, and when it is at “au”, then it is not at “g” and “H” (=visargah). In this way, an act of pronunciation is generated and destroyed, not of words. But on account of availability of words in space, words are filled up everywhere, partless and uniformly; but till the act of breath and speech takes place, till then pronunciation and hearing of words do not take place. From this, it is proved that words are eternal just like ether = sky. When according to grammatical science, all words are eternal, then what to speak of words ofVedas, since words ofVedasremain eternal in all ways.
Similarly, seer Jaiminihad also established eternity of words, as follows —
नित्यस्तु स्याद्दर्शनस्य परार्थत्वात्॥
nityastu syaaddarshansya paraarthatvaat.Puurva Miimaansa1.1.18.
i.e., word is verily eternal as it is manifested for the sake of others. The word “verily” is used in aphorism for the removal of doubt about the non-eternity of the word. Word is eternal only i.e., it is imperishable; since hearing of a word after the act of pronunciation, is to know the object, and by this, the word cannot be proved as non-eternal. The word which is pronounced, that alone has identification, that remains present in mind after hearing from ears, and then from that word knowledge of object takes place. If a word would have been non-eternal, then how would the knowledge have taken place, since that word had not remained, then by whom object is made known? And like many people, at different places, at one time, the pronoun word “cow”, in the same way, that word is pronounced again and again, on account of this reason also word is eternal. If a word would have been non-eternal, then this system would never have been possible. So, in this way, seer Jaiminihad proved word as eternal on account of several arguments in his work on “Puurva Miimaansa”.
Similarly, seerKaNaada, author of ‘VaisheShika Philosophy’also said —
तद्वचनादाम्नायस्य प्रामाण्यम्॥
tadvachanaadaamnaayasya praamaaNyam.VaisheShika1.1.3
i.e.,Vedasare words of GOD, these contain true knowledge and enjoin performances of virtue without partiality, and so, fourVedasare eternal. It is proper for all men to admit this since GOD is eternal, therefore his knowledge is also eternal.
Similarly, seer Gautamalso declared word as eternal, inNyaaya Philosophy—
मन्त्रायुर्वेदप्रामाण्यवच्च तत्प्रामाण्यमाप्तप्रामाण्यात्॥
mantraayurveda-praamaaNyavachcha tatpraamaaNyamaapta-praamaaNyaat.Nyaaya2.1.67.
Vedasare to be accepted as eternal, since from the beginning of creation to date, all incredible persons likeBrahmaa, etc. have acceptedVedasas eternal. We should accept the authenticity of incredible people. Since an incredible person is one who is virtuous, devoid of defects of deception and treachery, masters of all knowledge, great yogis, and advisor of truth for pleasure-ness of all men, and there is not even a touch of partiality and wrong-ness in them. They have accepted the authenticity ofVedaswith the quality of eternity, like that ofMantras(Verses defining true material science) andAyurveda(Medical Science). Just as one considersMantras, revealing factual material science, to be true and authoritative since their truth is practically established; and one finds that the use of medicines prescribed in one part ofAyurvedacures disease, then have faith in other parts of those treatises; in the same way, the authenticity ofVedasis also to be accepted by human beings. Since by ascertaining the truth of propositions stated in one part ofVedasby direct perception, then the authenticity of contents of other parts ofVedas, which are not directly cognized, is also to be admitted since the advice of an incredible person cannot be wrong.
SeerVaatsyaayanahad also stated to this effect in his commentary on this aphorism as —
“This inference is drawn from the identity of Seers and expositors. That is to say that the same incredible persons, who are Seers and expositors ofVedas, are also Seers and expositors ofAyurveda, etc. Thus it is inferred thatVedasare as much authentic as Medical Science.Hence, it has been argued that words ofVedasare of eternal authority; because they are accepted to be such by incredible persons.”
Here seerVaatsyaayanahad clearly established the eternity ofVedasby saying that incredible persons are seers and expositors ofVedas. The same incredible persons who are direct cognisors of hymns ofVedasare writers of the treatise ofAyuraveda. As their statements are true inAyurveda, in the same way, their conception of accepting the eternity ofVedasis also correct; and the same should be admitted. As the advice of an incredible person is authentic, similarly, GOD who is supreme trustworthy of all trustworthy persons, andVedasbeing revealed by Him, hence, are to be accepted as eternal only.
In this regard, seerPatanjali, author ofYoga-darshan, also acceptsVedasas eternal—
स एष पूर्वेषामपि गुरुः कालेनानवच्छेदात्॥
sa eSha puurveShamapi guruH kaalenaanavachChedaat.Yoga1.26
i.e., He is the teacher of ancients too because He is not limited by time.
GOD is the teacher of all — of ancients such asAgni, Vayu, Aaditya, Angira, andBrahmaa, etc., who were born at the beginning of creation, of moderns such as ourselves and those also who will be born in the future. GOD is called a teacher because He imparts true meanings through theVedas.Hence, GOD is eternal for all times, as movement of time does not take place in Him, and He is untouched by afflictions of nescience, etc., vicious acts, their potencies, and their experiences. HE is always with infinite science, so, the truthness and eternity ofVedas, revealed by Him, is also certain. This alone is to be accepted by all.
Similarly, seer Kapila, inPhilosophy of Saankhya, said in the fifth chapter—
निजशक्त्यभिव्यक्तेः स्वतः प्रामाण्यम्॥
nijashaktyabhivyakteH svataHpraamaaNyam.Saankhya5.51.
Vedas, being revealed from their own power of knowledge of the Supreme Lord, are to be accepted as eternal and self-authoritative by all human beings.
With regard to eternity ofVedas, seer Krishna-dvaipaayana Vyaasasaid in hisVedaanta Philosophy, as —
शास्त्रयोनित्वात्॥
shaastra yonitvaat.Vedaanta1.1.3.
i.e., HE is the source of allVedas.
Swami Shankracharyahad also accepted the eternity ofVedaswhile explaining this aphorism that – “fourRigvedaand others, are the repository of numberless sciences, illuminates the real meaning of all objects like sun. Their creator is GOD who has qualities of Omniscience and others, since no Soul other than Omniscient GOD may have the power of authorship ofVedaswhich are the source of entire universal knowledge. But for spreading the meaning ofVedas, it is possible to write on various particular sciences by particular Soul. Asseer Paniniand had written grammatical science etc. They explained one-one science of true knowledge, and that too with the help of the knowledge ofVedas. AndVedas, which are the source of all sciences, can not be created by any person other than GOD, since nobody else has complete knowledge of all sciences. On the other hand, by study and logical thinking ofVedas, created by GOD, and also by His grace, human beings can achieve knowledge of various sciences, not otherwise.” By this, it is known that allAryanpeople believe thatVedasare eternal. Another reason is that since GOD is eternal and Omniscient, so, HisVedasare also liable to be eternal and Omniscient. The scriptures created by others cannot have such qualities. In the same chapter, it is also said—
अत एव च नित्यत्वम्॥
ata eva cha nityatvam.Vedaanta Philosophy1.3.29.
From this aphorism, is clear thatVedasare eternal, and it is to be accepted by all gentlemen thatVedasare self-authoritative. And for authenticity and eternity ofVedas, testimonies of other scriptures are to be accepted as witnesses only, sinceVedasare eternal by their own testimonies.Vedascarry their own authority like the sun. As the sun alone is evidence of its illumination, nothing else, and as the sun is an illuminator and all objects, from an atom to a mountain, are illuminated by the sun, in the same way,Vedasare self-illuminating and illuminate all true sciences.
In the same way, GOD had advised eternity and self-authoritativeness of Self and His createdVedasinYajurveda—
स पर्य॑गाच्छु॒क्रम॑का॒यम॑व्र॒णम॑स्नावि॒रꣳ शु॒द्धमपा॑पविद्धम्।
क॒विर्म॑नी॒षी प॑रि॒भूः स्व॑य॒म्भूर्या॑थातथ्य॒तोऽर्था॒न् व्य᳖दधाच्छाश्व॒तीभ्यः॒ समा॑भ्यः॥
sa paryyagaat-Chukram-akaayam-avarNam-asnaaviram-shuddham-apaapaviddham. kavirmaniiShii paribhuuH svayambhuuH yaathaatathyato.-arthaan vyadadhaat-shaashvatiibhyaH samaabhyaH.Yajurveda40.8
The hymn describes GOD and His manifestedVedas– (sa paryagaat) GOD who is Omnipresent, pervades whole universe and even an atom is not there without his presence, that GOD (shukram) had created this whole universe and possesses eternal knowledge and mighty potency, (akaaya) is free from ties of threefold bodies – gross, subtle and causal bodies i.e., He never takes birth, (avarNam) in whom even an atom cannot penetrate, hence, He is altogether woundless, (asnaaviram) He is free from all bounds of arteries / veins, as air and blood remains bounded by veins in body, such type of bondage is not there in GOD, (shuddham) who is untouched by nescience and ignorance etc. and all defects, (apaapaviddham) so, GOD is not sinful or never performs sin, since is virtuous by nature alone, (kaviH) He is Omniscient, (maniiShii) who knows, as a pure witness, minds of all, and knows affairs of past, present and future – these three times, as it is, (paribhuuH) who is Lord of all i.e., existing above all, (svyambhuuH) who is never born and is even without any cause (for his existence), but He is cause of all, eternal and endless, so, He is mother-father of all of us, and is Self-Existent and ever present by his own might; that existent, conscious and blissful GOD (arthaan vyadadhaat) advised true knowledge of things (shaashvatiibhyaH...) to all His subjects, who are always present in his authority, for their all pleasures, through revelation ofVedas, in beginning of creation. In this way, as and when GOD creates the universe, then for the well-being of human beings, advisesVedasalso which include all true sciences, at the beginning of creation; and when holocaust takes place, then thoseVedasremain existing in His knowledge, so, these are to be accepted as eternal.
As it has been decided based on scriptural testimonies thatVedasare eternal, in the same way, their eternity is proved by logic also. Since the creation of “something” from “nothing” i.e., “existent” from “non-existent” is never possible, and “existent” can never become “non-existent”. What is existent, that alone moves in the future, and a non-existent object, from that other object cannot come into existence. According to this maxim, it is proper to accept the eternity ofVedas. Since that which has no root, can never have its branches, leaves, flowers, fruits, etc. As, if somebody says that I have seen the marriage of a barren woman’s son, this is impossible, since she is having a son then that woman cannot be sterile; and when the son is not there, then how his marriage and viewing of such marriage can take place? Similarly, when GOD has infinite knowledge, then only He has advised knowledge to human beings. And if GOD would not have possessed knowledge, how can He reveal knowledge to others? And How could He have created the universe? If GOD had not advised His knowledge to human beings, then no one would have the knowledge, which is true science; since nothing in this world can exist and sprout, if there is no root. From this, it is to be known that by getting knowledge from GOD, a tree of knowledge had been developed in mankind.
There is another logic in this that every person gives examples of things that are experienced and directly perfected — see what is directly experienced, that alone has residual potency in mind, and then memory takes place from residual potencies. And from that memory, one inclines towards the desired one, remaining away from the undesired object/subject, not otherwise. One who studies theSanskritlanguage has its potencies in mind, not of any other language; and who studies other local language, retains potencies of that local language only, not of others. In the same way, If GOD had not advisedVedasto mankind, then no human being would have the potency of knowledge; and when there would not have a potency of knowledge, then there can be no remembrance; and without remembrance, no human being had even trace of knowledge. What is known by this logic? By hearing and studying theVedas, knowledge of GOD, and their logical thinking human beings had potencies of knowledge to date, this can never be denied.
Question: - Men have natural inclinations towards acts, by that they experience pleasure and pain; by that, there will be an increase in knowledge gradually, during the course of time, and in this way, they will also createVedas. Then why should we accept thatVedasare revealed by GOD?
Ans: - This had been resolved in the chapter “Origin ofVedas”. There it was decided that as in the present time, no one becomes knowledgeable without studying from other intellectuals, and without this increase of knowledge is not seen in anyone; similarly at the beginning of creation, without knowledge of GOD, there can be no progress in learning and knowledge of human being. In this regard, we had given examples of a child, kept alone without instructions, and forest-dwellers. As that child and forest-dwellers could not achieve knowledge properly, and without proper advice they even do not have knowledge of social behavior, then achieving knowledge (on their own) is quite difficult. Hence, it is to be known by this, that after the manifestation ofVedasby GOD, it was easy for human beings to increase their knowledge of true sciences since His all properties are true only. By this, His knowledge in the form ofVedasis eternal only.
For an object, which is eternal, its attributes i.e., name, properties, and acts are also eternal only, since their base is eternal only. And without base, attributes of name, property, and acts cannot exist; since these are based on object/substratum only. The objects which are non-eternal, their name, properties, and acts are also non-eternal. So, which object can be said as eternal? An object which is not subject to production and dissolution is eternal. And what is production = creation? Production is a manifestation of a gross object by a specific combination of atoms. And when atoms of a gross object get separated and exist in their causal form, is known as dissolution. The objects that become gross by combination, are seen/experienced by the senses of eyes, etc. Again when atoms of these objects get separated, then these are not experienced by senses, it is called their destruction. Since non-view ability is known as destruction. An object that is created by combination and destructed by separation is known as ‘work’ and ‘non-eternal, and which is distinct from combination and separation, that is never produced nor destructed. GOD and the cause of the universe (Matter) are such types of objects since these always remain part-less and in one form, so, these are called eternal. In this regard, there is a testimony of the aphorism of seerKaNaada—
सदकारणवन्नित्यम्॥
sadakaaraNavat-nityam.VaisheShika Philosophy4.4.1.
i.e., an object which exists and is uncaused is eternal.
Which is a product of another i.e., has a cause and exists, is non-eternal. As a jar is created from the earth, it also gets destroyed. In the same way, this whole universe gets manifested from Matter, by the power of GOD, and exists; again in the holocaust, it does not exist in gross form but always remains in cause form. So, an object that exists and has no cause i.e., is in the form of cause only, is known as eternal.
Since whatever is produced by combination, compulsorily requires a producer. As, an act, rule, and work always give knowledge of their doer, formulator, and cause respectively. And if somebody says that there should be a producer for a producer, then he should be asked who had produced a producer for a producer. In this way, such types of questions will not have a limit, and will not stand. And whatever gets produced by a combination that is not capable of combining atoms of Matter. So, whichever is subtler, that is the soul of the gross object i.e., subtler pervades in gross one; as fire penetrates gross iron and remains present in all its atoms/parts, and similarly, as water penetrates the earth and combines its atoms into a ball and also disjoin them from one another. In the same way, GOD who is separate from all conjunction and disjunctions, All-pervading, even subtler than Matter and its atoms, and is a Conscious entity; and for this reason, HE has the power to create the universe by combining atoms of Matter. If HE had been grosser than atoms of Matter, then HE would not be able to grasp and control those atoms, since gross objects are not capable of controlling subtle objects. As we people are not capable of doing the combination and separation of atoms and Matter, since whoever is in the system of combination and separation, cannot be capable of its combination and separation.
And the object from which combination and separation start, that object is different from combination and separation since that alone is the root cause and formulator of rules for the start of combination and separation; and in the absence of root cause, it is impossible to take place process of combination and separation. From this, it is to be known thatVedaswhich are revealed by and always exist in the knowledge of GOD who is changeless, unborn, without beginning, eternal, with all true powers, and have infinite knowledge, those (Vedas) are to be accepted as truthful knowledge and eternal by all human beings. This has been discussed in brief about the eternity ofVedas.
