Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 11
In English:
Component Word : dhyaanaheyaaH tad vRRittayaH.
Preface to Sutra in English : sthitaanaam tu biijabhaavopagataanaam—
Meaning in English : The afflictions which (biija-bhaavopagataanaam) became tenuous by the performance of "Yoga of Action", (tu) but (sthitaanaam) existing as retaining their seed-power —
Sutra in English : dhyaanaheyaastadvRRittayaH.11.
Meaning in English : (tad-vrittayaH) Their modifications (i.e., modifications of afflictions) are (dhyaana-heyaaH) destroyable by meditation = discriminative knowledge.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : kleshaanaam yaa vRRittayaH sthuulaastaaH kriyaayogena tanuukRRitaaH satyaH prasa.mkhyaanena dhyaanena haatavyaa yaavatsuukShmiikRRitaa yaavaddagdhabiijakalpaa iti. yathaa cha vastraaNaam sthuulo malaH puurvam nirdhuuyate pashchaat suukShmo yatnenopaayena chaapaniiyate tathaa svalpapratipakShaaH sthuulaa vRRittayaH kleshaanaam suukShmaastu mahaapratipakShaa iti.
Meaning In English : (vrittayaH) The modifications of (kleshaanaam) afflictions, (yaaH) which are (sthuulaaH) gross i.e., operative or alternated by other, (taaH) are (tanuu-kritaaH) attenuated (kriyaayogena) by the "Yoga of Action"; (satyaH) and having been So, attenuated (haatavyaaH) are destroyable (prasa.nkhyaanena dhyaanena) by the higher intellection of meditation. Till when? (yaavat) Till (suukShmiikritaaH) these modifications become tenuous, and (yaavat) till (dagdhabiijakalpaa iti) their seed power is burnt up.
(yathaa) As (sthuulo malaH) the gross dirt (vastraaNaam) of cloths (puurvam nirdhuuyate) is at first shaken off, and (pashchaat) then (suukShmaH) the fine dirt (apaniiyate) is washed off (yatnena) by effort (cha) and (upaayena) by means i.e., the appliance of soap, etc, (tathaa) So, (sthuulaaH vrittayaH) the gross operative or alternated modifications (kleshaanaam) of afflictions (svalpapratipakShaaH) need small antagonistic efforts i.e., removed by the performance of "Yoga of Action" easily, (suukShmaaH tu) whereas the subtle = potential modifications of afflictions existing as residual potencies in the mind (mahaapratipakShaaH iti) need very powerful antagonists i.e., destroyed by discriminative knowledge.
Vedic Commentary in English : By the performance of "Yoga of Action", the afflictions are weakened. But even though these are attenuated, till these reach the burnt-up state, these will again come in the operative state, on having some strong base available for their operation, and put the person in the endless cycle of afflictive modification - afflictive residual potencies - afflictive modification. So, the Yogi, who wants to attain salvation, has to bring these afflictions in the burnt-up state after these are weakened = attenuated, so that these should not be able to bring their results = perform their functions. Only after this stage yogi is said to have had his last birth. In the last aphorism, Seer Patanjali said - "te pratiprasavaheyaaH suukshmaaH" (2.10) which means that the afflictions get destroyed along with the passing out of mind when these become like burnt-up seeds and powerless to perform their functions. The method to bring these to the burnt-up state is now explained as - these afflictions are destroyed by discriminative knowledge.
Here we have to understand the conception of discriminative knowledge. The discriminative knowledge means the differential real cognitive knowledge of Matter and Soul, which is achieved in the higher stage of Egoism Cognitive Trance. In the beginning, a devotee has to obtain verbal knowledge, of the above objects, by studying Vedas and Vedic scriptures. Though this verbal knowledge is the base for discriminative knowledge, yet this knowledge does not perform the function of bringing the afflictions to the burnt-up state. When the Yogi achieves the cognizance of the real form of Matter and its products in the Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances, and then reaches the stage of Egoism Cognitive Trance for cognizing the nature and form of the Soul. In this stage, he is able to achieve the cognizance of the Soul, since the Soul is the main and only base of this cognitive trance. The higher state of this trance is known as the "Cloud-of-Virtue" trance.
The supreme knowledge achieved by the cognizance of this state is known as intellection of meditation = discriminative knowledge. (Ref - prasa.nkhyaane.api-akusiidasya sarvathaa viveka-khyaateH-dharmameghaH samaadhiH (aphorism 4.29); and tadeva rajoleshamalaapetam svaruupa-pratiShTham sattvapuruShaanyataa-khyaatimaatram dharmamegha-dhyaanopagam bhavati. tatparam prasa.nkhyaanam-iti-aachakShate dhyaayinaH. (Vyaasa commentary 1.2)) With the discriminative knowledge, achieved on account of having the cognizance of Matter and Soul in this state, the yogi cognizes the real form of all the objects. With this meditative intellection = discriminative knowledge yogi even removes dormant and tenuous stages of Nescience, etc. Cessation of Nescience = unreal perception = wrong knowledge and alternated knowledge is possible only by discriminative knowledge. And on cessation of Nescience, its products i.e., Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death also cease to exist. In this state, the afflictions are said to be in the burnt-up stage, and these are not able to sprout again and perform their functions or produce their results. (After this state the process for cessation of residual potencies and stopping the succession of changes of Qualities is explained in the last 5 aphorisms in the chapter "On Emancipation").
One has to perform hard to bring the afflictions in the burnt-up seeds stage. Why? For this, an example is given that the gross dirt of the clothes is removed even by shaking, washing by water, etc.; but the fine dirt of the clothes is not removed merely by shaking and washing, for this, the clothes are washed by boiling, applying the other means like soaps, etc. which cleans the fine dirt within the cloth. In the same way "Yoga of Action" is prescribed to make the afflictions tenuous. But such tenuous and alternated afflictions exist in the mind of the person and do become operative on having some strong base available for them. So, for a complete cessation of these afflictions, the intellection of meditation = discriminative knowledge is prescribed which brings the afflictions to the burnt-up seed stage. Cessation of afflictions is achieved by discriminative knowledge only. (Ref - tataH kleshakarmanivrittiH. Yoga 4.30). So, as the discriminative knowledge becomes more and more strong and stable, the tenuous modification of afflictions gets destroyed. As by merely reading and listening, one is not able to cognize the differential knowledge of Matter and Soul, in the same way, the afflictions are also not destroyed only by the performance of "Yoga of Action".
