Meaning In English : (tatra puNya-apuNya-karmaashayaH) The vehicle of virtuous and vicious actions generated in the mind is (kaama-lobha-moha-krodha-prabhavaH) born of lust, avarice, illusion = forgetfulness, and anger. (saH) That virtuous and vicious vehicle of actions (driShTa-janma-vedaniiyaH) gives its fruits in the visible birth (cha) and (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyaH cha) in the invisible births.
(tatra) Of these (puNya-karmaashayaH) the vehicle of virtuous actions (yaH) which is (nirvarttita) supplemented = performed by (tiivra-samvegena) intense energy in the shape of (mantra-tapaH-samaadhibhiH) repetition of hymns (like AUM, Gayatri, etc.), purificatory action, and trance (vaa) or (pariniShpannaH) accompanied by (aaraadhanaat) devotion to (Ishvara-devataa-mahariShi-mahaanubhaavaanaam) the GOD, devas = spiritually intellectuals, the great seers and other possessors of great powers, (saH) that type of vehicle of actions (paripachyate) ripens into fruits (sadyaH iti) at once i.e., in the present birth.
(tathaa) Similarly, in the event of (punaH punaH) the repeated (apakaaraH) evils (kritaH) done, (tiivra-kleshena) because the afflictions are operative intensely, (bhiita-vyaadhita-kripaNeShu) to men who are suffering the extreme misery of fear, disease, and helplessness, (vaa) or (vishvaasa-upagateShu) to those who place confidence in him, (vaa) or (mahaanubhaaveShu) to those who are high-minded and (tapasviShu) perform purificatory actions; (saH) the above type of (paapa-karmaashayaH) vehicle of vicious actions (api cha) also (paripachyate) ripens into fruits (sadya eva) at once i.e., in the present birth.
(yathaa) As for example (nandiishvaraH kumaaraH) the young Nandiishvara (manuShya-pariNaamam hitvaa) passed out of the normal human category and (pariNataH) achieved the category of (devatvena) devataa i.e., highly intellectual who accepted and performed truth in all ways. (tathaa) Similarly, (nuhuShaH) Nuhusha, (devaanaam indraH) the ruler = king of highly spiritual intellectuals, (api) also due to his vehicle of vicious actions (svakam pariNaamam hitvaa) passed out of his own category and (pariNataH) got the category of (tiryaktvena iti) evil persons.
(tatra) Of the above two types of (karmaashayaH) vehicles of actions (naarakaaNaam) which culminate into the life of hell, (na asti) is not experienced in (driShTa-janma-vedaniiyaH) the present visible birth. And (karmaashayaH) the vehicle of actions of (kShiiNakleshaanaam) Yogi whose afflictions have been burnt-up by discriminative knowledge, (api) also (na asti) is not experienced in (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyaH iti) the invisible births.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Vyaasa said in 1.5 that the modifications of the mind generated due to afflictions, becoming the cause of virtue-vice actions and their residual potencies, are called afflictive modifications. In the same way, Bhoja in his commentary wrote that the modifications affected by afflictions are afflictive. The modifications of the mind alone, get converted into verbal and physical acts.
The vehicle of actions born from afflictions is on account of defects like lust, avarice, illusion, anger, etc. This type of vehicle of action is of the nature of vice, virtue, and a mixture of both. The person performs virtuous, vicious, and mixed-up acts, on being affected by the above-said defects. As on being affected by lust, one destroys continence, goes for experiencing physical relations with persons other than his / her spouse; and even performs virtuous acts i.e., donate for social causes, help living beings, perform Yagya (Fire-oblation), etc. in order to avail the worldly enjoyments in the present and future life-states; on being affected by avarice, try to avail the worldly objects by theft, cheating, etc.; on being affected by illusion perform virtuous acts in order to have the well-being of self and his family and perform vice acts in order to arrange for material enjoyment and wealth for the self and family; similarly authoritative anger towards the vicious and evil persons comes in the category of virtue acts and another type of anger comes in the category of vice acts.
Afflictive modifications that are affected by afflictions result in the generation of afflictive residual potencies by the performance of verbal and physical acts according to such modifications, and again having afflictive modifications and performance of such type of verbal and physical acts from the afflictive residual potencies; in this way, life-cycle of this world continues for the Soul. This has been clearly said by Seer Vyaasa in Yoga 1.5 that "tathaajaatiiyakaaH sa.nskaaraa vrittibhiH-eva kriyante sa.nskaaraiH-cha vrittaya iti. evam vritti-sa.nskaara-chakram-anivhamaavarttate" i.e., potencies of actions of the same class i.e., afflictive and non-afflictive are generated by the same type of modifications; and from those potencies of actions, modifications i.e., the same type of afflictive and non-afflictive activities are caused. Thus, the wheel of activities and potencies turns round and round.
So the type of virtue-vice vehicle of actions generated by the mental-verbal-physical acts which are affected by lust, avarice, illusion, and anger, etc., the person adopts the same type of modifications again and again, due to prominence of such vehicle of actions or being affected by the same type of vehicle of actions; and in this way, the continuous cycle of the virtue-vice-mixed up the vehicle of actions on account of the effect of afflictions and the same type of acts on account of potencies of such vehicle of actions keeps the soul in the life-cycle in this world and he gets various life-states, life-time, and experience of worldly pains and enjoyments on account of fruition of his vehicle of actions.
Seer Patanjali had declared that acts of Yogi are devoid of virtue and vice and other persons have virtue-vice-mixed-up acts in 4.7 (karma-ashukla-akriShNam yoginaH-trividham itreShaam.) Seer Vyaasa while explaining this aphorism had explained - Which types of acts are virtuous? Which types of acts are vicious? and which types of acts are mixed up? Vehicle of action is generated by the performance of the various types of acts, which gives fruits in the present life as well as future lives. Now the question that - which virtue or vice vehicle of actions gives its fruits in the present life? is the most crucial one, and GOD alone knows it. But for the well-being of human beings, Seer Vyaasa had given some useful hints in this regard in his commentary on this aphorism.
The virtuous vehicle of actions which gives fruits in the present life are —
1. Vehicle of actions generated by the repetition of hymns (Aum and Gayatri etc.), purificatory actions = performance of truth, achievement of cognitive and ultra-cognitive trance by the effect of the intense energy of pure potencies, Practice, Desirelessness, and Supreme Desirelessness.
2. Vehicle of actions generated by devotion and juxtaposition of GOD, devas = intellectuals, great seers, etc. Here the meaning of GOD etc. is to be understood in the following way —
- GOD — As said and explained in aphorism 1.24 above i.e., the supreme Soul who is untouched by afflictions, actions, its fruits, and impressions; and is described as existent, intelligent, and blissful, etc. in the Vedic scriptures.
- Devas — are meant for the intellectuals who perform as per truth (Ref - vidvaa.nso hi devaaH. Shatapatha 3.7.3.10) i.e., the person whose mental, verbal, and physical acts are according to truth only; and persons who have destroyed vice (Ref - apahatapaapmaano devaaH. Shatapatha 2.1.3.4).
- Great seers — the intellectuals who had cognized the Vedic hymns in trance and advised their meaning to other human beings (Ref - rishibhiH - mantraarthadriShTribhiH-adhyaapakaiH tarkaiH kaaraNasthaiH praaNaiH vaa (Rigveda 1.1.2 - Swami Dayanand)). Swami Dayanand Saraswati while writing a commentary on Rigveda 1.1.2 given the testimony of Nirukta 1.20 - the intellectuals who cognize the things in trance i.e., virtuous intellectuals who know all the true knowledge and teach the Vedic hymns and their meaning to those persons who have not cognized the Vedic hymns in trance, are called as great seers.
Of the three above, the vehicle of actions generated by worshipping GOD and juxtaposition, respect, and service of devas and great seers, is known as virtuous. For the ripening of this virtuous vehicle of actions in the present life, the example of Nandishwara who had passed out of the normal human category and achieved the category of devataa = highly intellectual performing the truth in all ways in the present life itself.
The vicious vehicle of actions that gives fruits in the present life are —
1. The evils = losses done towards the persons who are suffering the extreme misery of fear, disease, helplessness, and person who place confidence in evil-doer; and
2. The vehicle of action generated by performing evils again and again towards the persons performing purificatory actions or moving on the path of virtue.
While giving the example in this regard it is said that Nuhusha, who was the ruler of high intellectuals, on account of his vicious vehicle of actions, passed out of his own superior category and got the category of evil persons and got a bad name in the intellectual persons.
While writing the commentary on this aphorism in the example of Nuhusha as above, various translators had taken the meaning of the Sanskrit word "tiryaka", as the life-state of a snake, etc. But this type of life-state change is possible in the future invisible births, not in the present birth. Seer Vyaasa had clearly mentioned in his commentary on 2.13 that fruition in the present life is "dvi-vipaakaarambhi vaa bhoga-aayu-hetutvaat" i.e., bring about two types of fruits as causing life-time and life-experience only. Life-state for any Soul gets changed in the fruition system of GOD after the present birth i.e., after death only. While writing on the definition of life-state Swami Dayanand Saraswati said that "Life-state is that which remains same from birth to death, which is common for various living beings and is created by GOD i.e., as a group of man, cow, horse, tree, etc." (Arya-uddeshashya-ratnamaalaa 38). So, a change of life-state for a human being in the present birth is to be understood as an adoption of the nature of other life-states i.e., adoption of the nature of animals, etc. In this regard, while writing on the nature of a person in Vyavahaarabhaanu, Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote that "One who do not save the weaker, and harm or kill them as animals do, should be considered as of that life-state only". So, the above meaning of "triyaka" is rational in this regard.
Those people who, even after receiving the life-state of a human being, remain involved in vicious acts, perform against the advice of Vedas and true scriptures, and thereby hurt the Soul, get the fruits of their vicious vehicle of actions, which is possible in life-state of deep darkness, in the future invisible births. (Ref - Hymn of Yajurveda 40.2 - asuryyaa naama te lokaa andhena tamasaa.avritaaH. taa.nste pretyaapi.agachchhanti ye ke chaatmahano janaaH.) Since the type of fruits for such vicious actions is not possible to be achieved in the human life-state, So, its fruition is said to be achieved in invisible births. On the other hand, the Yogi, who has burnt up the seeds of his afflictions in the Ultra-cognitive Trance, gets the fruition of his vehicle of action in the present life only, as he will not remain in the life cycle and achieves salvation after leaving the present human body.
