Meaning In English : (karmaashayaH) The vehicle of actions (vipaakaarambhii bhavati) begins to ripen into fruits (satsu klesheShu) when the afflictions exist in the mind; and (na) it does not ripen into fruits when (uchchhinna-kleshamuulaH) the afflictions have been destroyed = rooted out from mind. (yathaa) As (shaalitaNdulaa) the rice in the paddy (bhavanti) have (praroha-samarthaa) the power to grow as long as (tuShaa-vanaddhaaH) the chaff remains attached thereto and (adagdhabiijabhaavaaH) the seed-power is not burnt-up; but the rice (apaniitatuShaa) without chaff (vaa) or (dagdha-biija-bhaavaa) when the seed of rice are being burnt-up, are (na) not able to grow; (tathaa) So, also (karmaashayaH) the vehicle of actions which is (kleshaavanaddhaH) attached with the afflictions, (vipaakaprarohii bhavati) starts giving its fruits, and (na) does not ripen its fruits when it is (na apaniitakleshaH) not attached to the afflictions (vaa) and (prasa.nkhyaana-dagdha-klesha-biija-bhaavaH iti) whose seed-power has been burnt-up by the fire of discriminative knowledge. (cha) And (vipaakaH) the fruits of (saH) that vehicle of actions is (trividhaH) of three descriptions namely (jaati-aayuH-bhogaH iti) life-state, lifetime, and experience.
(tatra) In this regard (idam) the followings (vichaaryate) have to be considered — (kim) Is (ekam karma) one action (kaaraNam) is the cause of (ekasya janmanaH) one life? (atha) or (ekam karma) one action (akShipati) brings about (anekam janma iti) more than one life? (dvitiiyaa) The second (vichaaraNaa) thought is - (kim) Do (anekam karma) more than one action (nirvartayati) bring about (anekam janma) more than one life? (atha) or (anekam karma) do more than one action = many actions (nirvarttayati) bring about (ekam janma iti) one life only?
While eliminating the first option it is said - (taavat) In this regard (ekam karma) one action (na kaaraNam) cannot be the cause of (ekasya janmanaH) one birth. (kasmaat) Why? Because in that case (phala-krama-aniyamaat) there would be no regularity of fruition of (asa.nkhyeyasya) heaped = countless (avashiShTasya) remaining actions, which are (anaadi-kaala-prachitasya) gathered in previous lives since long i.e., eternally, which are still remaining unconsumed = un-fruited (cha) and also (saampratikasya karmaNaH) the actions of the present life; thus (lokasya) the people in the world (anaashvaasaH prasaktaH) will not have confidence for getting fruits of their actions. (sa cha) And this concept is (aniShTa iti) harmful and hence it is not desired (since this concept is harmful to the performance of virtue by human beings).
For eliminating the second option it is argued — (cha) And (na) nor (ekam karma) one action is (kaaraNam) cause of (anekasya janmanaH) more than one life. (kasmaat) Why? Because (anekeShu karmasu) out of the limitless unfruited actions existing in the mind (ekaikam eva karma) if everyone acts (kaaraNam) becoming a cause of (anekasya janmanaH iti) more than one life, then (vipaaka-kaala-abhaavaH prasaktaH) there would remain no time for the fruition of (avashiShTasya) remaining un-fruited countless actions accumulated in mind eternally. (cha) And (sa) this concept is (api) also (aniShTa iti) harmful as above and hence is not desired end.
Now eliminating the third option — (cha) And (na) nor (anekam karma) more than one action (kaaraNam) is the cause of (anekasya janmanaH) more than one life. (kasmaat) Why? Since (na sambhavati) it is not possible that life-state which had taken place on account of fruition of a group of actions, (tat anekam janma) that all those life-states (yugapat) exist at once i.e., take place at the same time, (iti) therefore (krameNa eva vaachyam) it must be said that these lives can only be in succession i.e., one after another. (tathaa cha) And in this case (puurva-doSha-anuSha~NgaH) the defects already stated are apparent.
Now enunciating the fourth option — (tasmaat) Therefore (vichitraH puNya-apuNya-karmaashaya-prachayaH) the vehicle of the diversified virtue and vice acts (kritaH) done (janma-praayaNaantare) in the interval between birth and death by a human being, that (avasthitaH) exist in the mind (pradhaana-upasarjana-bhaavena) in the primary or secondary state. So, accumulated vehicle of actions, (praayeNa-abhivyaktaH) brought into manifestation by (type of) death, (ekapraghaTTakena militvaa) and coming together as a group, (sammuurchchhita) becoming properly active for giving its fruits to Soul, (maraNam prasaadhya) brings about death, and (karoti) causes (ekam eva janma) one life. (cha) And (tat janma) that life (labdha-aayuShkam bhavati) gets a lifetime (tenaiva karmaNaa) from that collective vehicle of actions. (tasmin aayuShi) During that lifetime (bhogaH) experience of joy and pain (sampadyate) is also caused (tenaiva karmaNaa iti) by that very collective vehicle of actions. (asau karmaashayaH) This vehicle of action (abhi-dhiiyate) is said to (tri-vipaakaH) possess three-fold fruition, (janma-aayuH-bhoga-hetutvaat iti) causing the manifestation of life-state, life-time, and life-experience. (ataH) So, (karmaashayaH) the vehicle of actions (uktaH) is said as (ekabhavikaH iti) "uni-genital" = causing one birth.
(tu) The vehicle of actions which (driShTajanma-vedaniiyaH) gives its fruits in the present life, (eka-vipaakaarambhii) brings one type of fruits (bhogahetutvaat) as causing life-experience; (vaa) or (dvi-vipaakaarambhii) brings about two types of fruits (bhoga-aayuH-hetutvaat) as causing life-time and life-experience, as in case of (nandiishvaravat) Nandiishvara (vaa) or (nahuShavat iti) Nahusha.
(idam chittam) This mind, (tu) however, (chitrii-kritam iva) is, as it were, variously colored, (sarvataH) all through = thoroughly (anaadi-kaala-sammuurchchhitam) on account of its being related from eternity (vaasanaabhiH) by the residua of (klesha-karma-vipaaka-anubhava-nirvartitaabhiH) experience of afflictions, virtuous and vicious actions, and their fruitions, (iva) as (matsyajaalam) fishing net (aatatam iti) is pervaded all over (granthibhiH) by knots. (ataH) So, (etaaH vaasanaaH) these residual potencies (aneka-bhava-puurvikaa) have been accumulated in the endless previous lives. (tu) However, (yaH ayam karmaashayaH) on the other hand what is termed as a vehicle of actions (eSha eva) that is (uktaH) said as (aika-bhavikah iti) uni-genital i.e., causing one birth. (ye sa.nskaaraaH) And potencies which are means for (smriti-hetavaH) causing of memories (taaH vaasanaaH) are called residua, (cha) and (taaH) these residual potencies (anaadi-kaaliinaaH iti) exist since eternity.
(yaH tu asau) And what is termed as (eka-bhavikaH karmaashayaH) uni-genital vehicle of actions (saH) that is (niyata-vipaakaH cha) either of definite fruition (aniyata-vipaakaH cha) or of indefinite fruition. (tatra) Out of the two types as above, (ayam niyamaH) the rule of uni-genital (= causing one birth) is (eva) for (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyasya niyata-vipaakasya) vehicle of actions which has definite fruition and is to be experienced in an invisible future life; (tu) on the other hand the rule of uni-genital is (na) not applicable to (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyasya aniyata-vipaakasya) the vehicle of actions whose fruition is not definite and is to be experienced in invisible lives. (kasmaat) Why? (hi) Because (yaH) the vehicle of actions, which is (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyaH aniyata-vipaakaH) to be experienced in the invisible life but still its fruition is indefinite, (tasya) has (trayii gatiH) threefold ends — (1) (kritasya) the accumulated performed acts (vinaashaH) are destroyed (avipakvasya) without generating their fruits (i.e., in this category, the acts remain un-fruited for a long time, for example in case of salvation, till the Soul remains in salvation); (2) (vaa) or (aavaapagamanam pradhaana-karmaNi) its fruition may get merged in the fruition time of primary ruling actions; (3) (vaa) or (avasthaanam) it may remain un-fruited (chiram) for a long time (abhibhuutasya) overpowered by (nityata-vipaaka-pradhaana-karmaNaaH iti) primary ruling actions which have definite fruition.
(tatra) Of these three-fold options, the first option is explained as — (naashaH) the destruction of (kritasya) actions done (avipakvasya) which are yet to be fruited, is in the same way (yathaa) as (kriShNasya) the sin = evil actions are (naashaH) destroyed, (iha eva) in the present life even, (shukla-karma-udayaat) by the rise of the virtuous actions. (idam uktam) The following has been said (yatra) on the subject — "(dve dve ha vai karmaNi veditavye) Two-two types of acts are to be known — (i) virtue acts and (ii) evil = sin = vicious acts. Out of the two (paapakasya) the evil = vicious acts are (apahanti) destroyed by (puNya-kritaH ekaH raashiH) the heap of virtuous acts i.e., the performance of Yoga of Action = Purificatory Action, Study of Vedas and Meditation, etc; (tat) So, (karttum ichchhasva) one should wish to do (sukritaani karmaaNi) the virtuous acts (iha eva) in the present life, since (kavayaH) the wise = seers (vedayante) prescribe (te karma) these acts for you."
The second option is explained — (aavaapagamanam pradhaana-karmaNi) As to merging of fruition of vehicle of actions in the fruition time of primary ruling actions, (idam uktam) the following has been said (yatra) on the subject — "(svalpaH sa~NkaraH syaat) If a little mixture of fruition of evil = vicious acts during the time of fruition of virtuous acts takes place, then its fruition, (saparihaaraH) may be easily removable and (sapratya-vamarShaH) bear-able, which (na alam) cannot (apakarShaaya) overpower the (kushalasya) intellectual from doing virtuous acts." (kasmaat) Why? (hi) Since such virtue doer thinks that (me anyad kushalam) my other virtuous acts (bahu asti) are much in number (yatra) where (ayam aavaapam gataH) with this mixed-up fruition of my performed evil = vicious acts (kariShyati) will cause (alpam apakarSham) some insignificant diminution (svarge api iti) even in the pleasure fruition of virtuous acts".
As regards the third option — (vaa) or the vehicle of actions (avasthaanam) remains un-fruited (chiram) for a long time (abhibhuutasya) overpowered by (niyata-vipaaka-pradhaana-karmaNaaH) primary ruling actions with definite fruition. (katham iti) How does it happen? (maraNam) Death is (uktam) said to be (kaaraNam) the cause of (samaanam abhivyakti) simultaneous appearance of (karmaNaH eva) those acts only whose (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyasya niyata-vipaakasya) fruition is definite and which are to be experienced in the invisible coming lives; (na tu) not for those acts which are (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyasya aniyata-vipaakasya) to be experienced in the invisible lives but whose fruition is indefinite. And (yat tu karma) the vehicle of actions whose (aniyata-vipaakam) fruition has not been determined and (adriShTa-janma-vedaniiyam) are to be experienced in the invisible lives, may either (tat nashyet) be destroyed (as explained in option 1 above), (vaa) or (aavaapam gachchhed) get merged for fruition with the fruition of primary ruling acts (as explained in option 2 above), (vaa) or (upaasiita) may remain un-fruited (abhibhuutam) being overpowered (chiram api) for a long time (yaavat) till (samaanam karma) some similar acts, becoming (nimittam) cause of (asya) its (abhivya~njakam) manifestation comes into play, (na) do not (karoti) incline them (vipaaka-abhimukham iti) for fruition. And (eva) since (desha-kaala-nimitta-anavadhaaraNaat) the place, time, and cause are not determined for (tad-vipaakasya) the fruition of the third type of un-fruited acts as above, So, (iyam) this (karmagatiH) philosophy of fruition of actions is (chitraa) variegated = strange (cha) and (durvij~naanaa iti) difficult to know. But (utsargasya) the rule of uni-genital (na cha nivrittiH) is not abolished (apavaadaat) by the exception, (iti) So, (karmaashayaH) the vehicle of actions is (anuj~naayate) recognized as (eka-bhavikaH iti) causing one life = birth only.
Vedic Commentary in English : The Soul gets conjunct with the matter on account of Nescience, and on account of this Nescience only, he gets life-state, lifetime, and life experiences on the basis of the vehicle of actions in the fruition system of GOD. Because of this affliction of Nescience, the Soul got birth in various life-states, on the basis of his virtue-vice vehicle of actions, since eternity, and in those life-states, he received lifetime and life-experiences also and thereby experienced the various types of pleasure and pains in those births. In the fruition system of GOD, the Soul receives pleasure and pains on the basis of his virtue-vice vehicle of actions only.
As per Seer Vyaasa, in order to receive fruits of the vehicle of actions, the existence of Nescience is a must. So, the Yogi who had destroyed his afflictions in the present life, made them as burnt-up seeds by the fire of discriminative knowledge in the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance, his vehicle of action does not ripen its fruits for him. Like the rice, without chaff and which are burnt-up, are not able to grow again; but the rice with chaff and which are not burnt-up, have the power to grow again. Similarly, the vehicle of actions, which is attached to the afflictions, starts giving its fruits; and is not capable of ripening its fruits when the afflictions are burnt up. But the fruits of those actions which had already started do not stop in between, even though the afflictions are being burnt up by the Yogi during the experience of those fruits i.e., his life does not end at once. If this is not accepted then the Yogi should receive salvation immediately when he gets his afflictions burnt up by the fire of discriminative knowledge in the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance. But the existence of persons who are freed from worldly bonds of life proves this conception.
Before understanding the Vyaasa commentary, we must understand what is "act"? While defining the act, Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote - "Whatever effort is done in mind, speech and physical body by the Soul are known as "Act". This is of three categories - virtuous, vicious and mixed up." (Arya-uddeshyaratna-maalaa 48). So, the acts of the mind, speech, and body are respectively known as mental acts, verbal acts, and physical acts; and with regard to virtue and vice, the acts are virtuous, vicious, and mixed up.
The fruits of the vehicle of actions are received in the shape of life-state, lifetime, and experience. Seer Vyaasa had shown the defects of the conception of one birth from one act, more than one birth from one act, and more than one birth from many acts, and eliminated such misconceptions; and in the end, established the principle of one birth from many acts. On believing one birth from one act — there being accumulation of countless mental, verbal, and physical acts in one lifetime for a human being, when will one receive fruition of eternally accumulated acts of previous lives and acts of the present life and there will not be any regularity of their fruition, So, the people in the world will not have confidence for getting fruits of their virtuous acts of the present life. This non-confidence will become a big hurdle = blockage for the performance of virtuous acts in the present life, and even the evil-doers will think that let us enjoy the malefic benefits from the vicious acts in the present life since its fruition since our countless acts performed till previous life are still un-fruited, So, the sequence for fruits of acts of present life will come after their fruition. In this way there being no rule of fruition, this conception will be harmful to the people for the performance of virtuous acts in the present life. In the same way with regard to the second conception of many births from one act will be more harmful, since by belief that one birth from one act is harmful and causes disorder even for social life for a human being in this world, then the belief of having more than one birth from one act will be more harmful. In the case of the third conception having more than one birth from more than one act is also not desirable, since more than one birth cannot take place at the same time, and these births will take place in sequence only. By inference, it can be said that one birth from one act, the next birth from the next act, and so, on. So, this conception will have the same defects as the first conception and hence it is also harmful.
While enunciating the principal conception Seer Vyaasa said that the mental, verbal, and physical acts performed during the lifetime till death, accumulate, in the mind in the primary or secondary state, in the form of virtue and vice vehicle of actions. This accumulated vehicle of actions, being brought into manifestation by the type of death, comes together as a group and causes the next birth of the Soul. So, the decision of the next birth for the Soul, in the fruition system of GOD, takes place on the basis of his majority primarily the existing vehicle of actions. Soul also gets a lifetime in that birth, from that vehicle of actions, and worldly experiences are also received from the same vehicle of actions. In this way, the vehicle of action provides three-fold fruit.
Here a doubt arises whether the lifetime is fixed purely on the basis of the vehicle of actions of previous births and whether the experiences receivable too are fixed on the basis of that accumulated vehicle of actions on whose base life-state is fruited? Whether all the pleasures and pains received in the present birth on the basis of the vehicle of actions accumulated in the previous births? This doubt is on account of not understanding the commentary of Vyaasa in totality. Seer Vyaasa had clearly said in his commentary that lifetime and experiences are also receivable on the basis of acts in the present visible life. So, lifetime and experiences are not merely fixed on the basis of the vehicle of actions of previous births.
The vehicle of action gives its fruits in the present birth as well as in future births. In the present birth it gets fruited in one way i.e., provides experiences and in two ways i.e., provides lifetime and experiences. As Nandiishwara got a lifetime and better worldly experiences in the present life itself on account of his virtuous vehicle of actions of the present life; and Nuhusha got painful experiences in the present life on account of his vicious vehicle of actions of the present life only. But it is not possible to get the new life-state in the present birth itself, it does take place after death only.
Vehicle of actions is said as "Uni-genital" i.e., causing one birth. But it should not be understood that on getting the next birth, the total vehicle of actions got fruited. In this regard
Seer Vyaasa said that the vehicle of actions which is to be fruited in an invisible future life is of definite fruition and indefinite fruition. The virtue-vice vehicle of actions, which is of definite fruition and accumulated as primary action in the present life, gets fruited for the next life for the Soul. But by such next birth, lifetime, and experiences in that life which group of acts out of the accumulated vehicle of actions got fruited and which remained un-fruited, this cannot be known by any Soul; GOD alone knows this system of fruition. In this way in the next birth also, at the time of death in that birth, the position of the un-fruited primary ruling vehicle of actions is made as a basis of the next birth for the Soul. And this way the life-death cycle continued with the Soul for eternity and will continue in the future also. Because of this life cycle, the Soul experiences various types of pleasure and pains. While giving the general rule for experiencing the various types of births / life-states, Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote in Light of Truth, Chapter 9, as —
"When sin predominates over virtue in a man, his soul goes into the bodies of lower animals, etc. and when virtue predominates over vice in a soul, he is born as a deva = intellectual person. When vice and virtue are equal, the soul gets the life of an ordinary man. In this also vice and virtue being of three different grades - superior, medium, and inferior - men are also possessed of superior, medium, and inferior kinds of material (bodies, bodily powers, mental capacities, talents, etc.). And when the fruits of excessive vice had been experienced in the bodies of animals etc., then again on having the equilibrium of virtue and vice, the Soul gets the birth of a human being; and also, after experiencing the fruits of virtue, the Soul gets the birth of an ordinary man."
The vehicle of actions of indefinite fruition, which is to be experienced in invisible future lives, has threefold ends —
1. Destruction of actions without generating their fruits. This is not a general rule. In fact, a yogi who had burnt up the seeds of afflictions after having discriminative knowledge = distinctive knowledge of the Soul and Matter and cognized the GOD in Ultra-cognitive Trance is known as a person freed from worldly bonds and achieves salvation after death from the present birth. He achieves salvation while moving on the path of Devayana (Ref the path of Devayana and Pritiyana as given in Chhandoyagya-upaniShada 5.10.1-4). For such Yogi, the vehicle of actions cannot give its fruits till the period of salvation. For such Yogi only destruction of the vehicle of actions, of indefinite fruition, is said.
But by the destruction of the vehicle of actions, it does not mean that their destruction is in a real sense without giving fruits. Why? Since as per the fruition system of GOD no vehicle of actions gets destroyed for any Soul without giving its fruits. The sanskrit verb "nashyati" is drawn from the root "Nash adarshane" (Dhaatupatha 4.82) which means not visible. Here non-visibility of the vehicle of actions is termed as its destruction. So, during the period of salvation, the non-visibility of the un-fruited vehicle of actions is called its destruction. But after the completion of the salvation period, the Soul gets the next birth, lifetime, and experiences on the basis of this un-fruited vehicle of actions, in the fruition system of GOD. This principle is advised in Rigveda —
agnervayam prathamasyaamritaanaam mannamahe chaaru devasya naama.
sa no mahyaa aditaye punardaat-pitaram cha drisheyam maataram cha.
Rigveda 1.24.2.
We should praise the Supreme Soul GOD and his qualities who created this world and who gave us birth in this world again and we are able to see our parents, spouse, and children again.
O People! As we believe in GOD who is eternal and gives us fruits of our virtue-vice acts and moves us in the life-cycle, in his justified system, you should also know the same GOD; and we believe that nobody else can perform such system and HE alone give birth, to the Soul who had enjoyed the bliss of salvation, as a human being on account of equilibrium of virtue and vice and make him get the parents and spouse, etc., at the end of super holocaust. (Swami Dayanand Saraswati)
Our seers had declared the acts as eternal by flow, So, their non-visibility is the destruction during the salvation period. And the example given by Seer Vyaasa justifies this conception which says that by the rise of virtue acts in the present life, vice acts get destroyed, and it is said that the majority and primacy of virtue acts, destroy the vice and mixed-up acts. So, one should wish to perform virtuous acts in the present life, that too without desire for their fruits, and this is the advice of Vedas and our great seers. In this way, the destroyed vice acts do not become capable of stopping the pleasure-full fruits of virtuous acts.
2. The second option for the vehicle of actions with indefinite fruition is to provide their fruition along with the fruition of the primary ruling action. In this way, the fruition of painful fruition of vice and mixed-up vehicle of actions, along with the fruition of primary virtuous actions, does not pain much to the intellectual and even does not become cause of deviating him from the path of virtue i.e., does not become a hindrance to performing virtue acts in the future. The virtuous intellectual thinks that a little mixture of fruition of vice actions will cause a little diminution in my pleasure experiences and in this way, he saves himself from the performance of such vicious acts in the future also. In this way the painful fruition of vicious acts is experienced along with the primary virtuous acts and future performance of virtuous acts is also continued and one remains on the path of virtue. But if the position is reversed, i.e., one gets the pleasure fruition of his virtuous acts along with the painful fruition of primary vicious acts, then those moments of pleasure will be insignificant and he will not be able to enjoy that pleasure fruition, and his accumulated little virtuous acts got fruited. This position cannot be considered useful and desirable.
3. The third option for the vehicle of actions with indefinite fruition is that it remains un-fruited for a long time, overpowered by primary ruling actions. Such a vehicle of actions gets fruited either in one of two ways above or remains un-fruited till some acts of immediate dominance or some similar action appear which becomes the cause of its manifestation. The philosophy of fruition of actions is said to be strange and difficult to know due to uncertainty of place, time, and cause of manifestation of the vehicle of actions with indefinite fruition which are to be experienced in invisible lives. GOD alone knows this system of fruition and HE makes the souls experience their vehicle of actions in a justified way.
But even after the uncertainty as above, the rule of uni-genital is the "fixed rule" for the fruition of the vehicle of actions i.e., fruition in the form of life-state, lifetime, and experience, for one time which means that vehicle of actions used for giving fruition to the Soul, only one time and get exhausted after that. However please refer to chapter 12 of Manusmriti in order to know which type of acts get fruited in which way.
The devotee should understand the difference between the vehicle of actions and residual potencies generated by afflictions, acts, and their fruition, otherwise, restraint of modifications will not be possible. The vehicle of action gets destroyed after giving its fruition for one time. This vehicle of action can not give endless fruition. So, it is said as uni-genital. On the other hand, the residual potencies generated from afflictions of Nescience, etc., virtue-vice-mixed-up acts and their fruition, remain present in the mind for eternal time. For this reason, Seer Vyaasa had said the cycle of modification-residual potency-modification in his commentary (Ref - tathaa-jaatiiyakaaH sa.nskaaraa vrittibhiH-eva kriyante sa.nskaaraiH-cha vrittaya iti. evam vritti-sa.nskaara-chakram anishmaavarttate. 1.5). So, even if the acts get destroyed after giving their fruits for one time, but due to this eternal cycle of modification-residual potency-modification, the infinite fruition of pain and ignorance is said for sins of violence, etc. (Ref - vitarkaa hi.nsaadayaH krita-kaarita-anumoditaa lobha-krodha-moha-puurvakaa mridu-madhya-adhimaatraa duHkha-aGYaana-ananta-phalaa iti pratipakSha-bhaavanam.
