Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 14
In English:
Component Word : te hlaadaparitaapaphalaaH puNyaapuNyahetutvaat.
Sutra in English : te hlaadaparitaapaphalaaH puNyaapuNyahetutvaat.14.
Meaning in English : (te) They = life-state, life-time, and life-experience have (hlaada-paritaapa) pleasure or pain (phalaaH) as fruits (puNya-apuNya-hetutvaat) since caused by virtuous and vicious actions.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : te janmaayurbhogaaH puNyahetukaaH sukhaphalaa apuNyahetukaa duHkhaphalaa iti. yathaa chedam duHkham pratikuulaatmakamevam viShayasukhakaale.api duHkhamastyeva pratikuulaatmakam yoginaH.
Meaning In English : (te) They i.e., (janma-aayuH-bhogaaH) life-state = birth, lifetime, and life experience are (sukha-phalaa) pleasure-full as the fruits (puNya-hetukaaH) when caused by virtuous acts; and (duHkha-phalaa) pain-full as the fruits (apuNya-hetukaa iti) when caused by evil = vicious acts. (cha) And (yathaa) as (idam) this (duHkham) pain is (pratikuulaatmakam) contrary to the prevalent mental tendencies at a time (evam) So, (pleasure) (duHkham asti) is pain only to (yoginaH) the Yogi (pratikuulaatmakam) on being contrary (eva) even (viShaya-sukha-kaale api) at the time of enjoyment of pleasurable objects.
Vedic Commentary in English : One receives the life-state, lifetime, and life experiences on the basis of his virtuous-vicious vehicle of actions. One gets a pleasureful life-state, lifetime, and life experiences on the fruition of accumulated virtuous actions; and gets a painful life-state, lifetime, and life experiences on the fruition of accumulated vicious actions. Virtuous vehicle of actions is accumulated by performing as per the advice of GOD, as per principles advised in Vedas and truth-full Vedic scriptures, as per rules of creation and other truthful acts; and vicious vehicle of actions is accumulated by performing in contradiction to the above. The principle, of pleasure from virtuous actions and pain from vicious actions, is fundamental for motivating people to do virtuous acts.
But this principle is not pleasing to the Yogi. Why? Since SeerGautama had said the birth as the cause of pain —
duHkha-janma-pravirtti-doSha-mithyaaGYaanaanaam-uttrottraa.apaaye tadanantaaapaayaat-apavargaH. Nyaaya Philosophy 1.1.2.
For having the next birth, the Soul is to experience the pains of living in the womb of the mother, even for the superior birth in the family of intellectuals, devas = intellectuals, seers. Even experiencing pleasure by taking birth in superior families having knowledge and/or wealth, from an accumulated virtuous vehicle of actions, may be pleasing at the time of such experiences, but it is mixed up with the pains on account of consequence, anxiety, and habituation. And again, by experiencing pleasure from virtuous acts, the virtuous vehicle of actions will weaken and as a result, the experience of pleasure will not remain constant and the painful experience will start. Even as per various scriptures, the Soul has to come back again in the life-cycle of this world and take birth in various life-states, after experiencing pleasure in higher states / life-states on account of the virtuous vehicle of actions. Again, does everybody always experience pleasure even after having all the means of pleasure in this world? Does anybody always remain happy? So, SeerKapila had said —
kutraapi ko.api sukhii na. Saankhya Philosophy 6.7.
i.e., nowhere, nobody is always happy. and —
tadapi duHkhashabalam-iti duHkhapakShe niHkShipante vivechakaaH.
Saankhya Philosophy 6.8.
By knowing that every pleasure receivable in this life is mixed up with the pain, the discriminator places pleasure in the category of pain only, as the foods mixed up with poison are not eatable, in the same way, pleasure mixed up with the pain is not experienceable.
Now what types of pains are mixed up with the pleasures to be receivable from the accumulated virtuous vehicle of actions, is explained in the next aphorism.
