Meaning In English : (ayam sukha-anubhavaH) The experience of pleasure (chetana-achetana-saadhanaadhiinaH) depending upon the enjoyment of animate = conscious objects (i.e., wife/husband, children, relatives, friends, animals, etc) and inanimate objects (i.e., house, property, etc), (sarvasya) in case of every person (raaga-anuviddhaH iti) is followed by attachment, So, (tatra) by that experience of pleasure (karmaashayaH) the vehicle of actions (asti) is born from (raagajaH) attachment. (cha) And (tathaa) in the same way (dveShTi) aversion (cha) and (muhyati) delusion takes place in one's mind (duHkha-saadhanaani) towards the objects causing pain or causes of pain, (iti) this way (karmaashayaH) the vehicle of actions (asti) is born from (dveSha-moha-kritaH) aversion and delusion (api) also. (cha) And (tathaa uktam) as it has been said — "(upabhogaH) Enjoyment (na sambhavati) is not possible (anupahatya) without giving pain (bhuutaani) to the living beings." (iti) So, this way (api) also (shaariiraH) the physical (karmaashayaH) vehicle of actions (asti) is (hi.nsaa-kritaH iti) caused by violence = giving pain to the other living beings. (cha) And (viShaya-sukham) enjoyment on account of pleasure of material objects (uktam) is said as (avidyaa iti) Nescience.
(upashaantiH) The satisfaction of desire, (yaa) which comes from (tripteH) calming down of (indriyaaNaam) powers of senses (bhogeShu) by the enjoyment of their objects, (tat) that (sukham) is a pleasure. And (yaa anupashaantiH) non-satisfaction of power of senses, (laulyaat) due to their unsteadiness = wandering-ness, (tat duHkham) is pain.
(cha) And (na kartum shakyam) it is not possible to make (indriyaaNaam) power of senses (vaitriShNyam) satisfied = desireless (bhogaabhyaasena) by frequent enjoyment of material objects. (kasmaat) Why? (yataH) Because (anu) as a result of (bhogaabhyaasam) experience of the material object through senses (raagaaH) attachment to the material objects (cha) and (kaushalaani) dexterity of (indriyaaNaam) of senses power, both (vivardhante iti) increases. (tasmaat) Therefore (bhogaa-bhyaasaH) repetitive enjoyment of material objects (anupaayaH) is not the cause of (sukhasya iti) pleasure. (yaH) Whoever (sukhaarthii) desires pleasure (viShaya-anuvaasitaH) by enjoying material objects and becoming addicted to them, (saH) he (nimagnaH) becomes entangled (mahati duHkha-pa~NkeH iti) in the big morass of pain; (iva) in the same way one, (khalu ayam) who certainly (vrishchika-viShabhiitaH) being afraid of the bite of a scorpion, (daShTaH) is bitten (aashiiviSheNa) by a snake = serpent.
(eshaa) This (pariNaamaduHkhataa naama) pain of consequence, (sukha-avasthaayaam api) even in the state of pleasure (pratikuulaa) by having a contrary effect, (klishnaati) affects the (yoginam eva) the yogi alone.
(atha) Now (kaa) what is (taapa-duHkhataa) pain of anxiety? (taapa-anubhavaH) The feeling of pain, (sarvasya) to all human beings, (chetana-achetana-saadhana-adhiinaH) on account of conscious beings (= wife/husband, child, relatives, animals, etc) and unconscious material objects (= house, property, etc) is (dveSha-anuviddhaH) followed by aversion. (iti) So, (tatra) here (karmaashayaH) vehicle of action (asti) is born (dveShajaH) from the aversion. (cha) And (praarthayamaanaH) the person desiring (sukha-saadhanaani) objects of pleasure (parispandate) efforts (kaayena) with his body, (vaachaa) speech, (cha) and (manasaa) mind. (tataH) With that effort he (anugrihNaati) favors = obliges (param) some living beings (cha) and (upahanti) disfavours = afflicts others. (iti) He, thus, (upachinoti) accumulates (dharma-adharmau) virtue and vice (para-anugraha-piidaabhyaam) by obliging and afflicting others (i.e., by causing happiness and painfulness to the other living/human beings.) (cha) And (saH) this (karmaashayaH) vehicle of action (bhavati) is born (lobhaat) from avarice = greed (cha) and (mohaat iti) delusion. (eshaa) This is (uchyate) called (taapa-duHkhataa) painfulness of anxiety.
(punaH) Now (kaa) what is (sa.nskaara-duHkhataa) pain of habituation? (sukha-sa.nskaara-aashayaH) The vehicle of the potency of pleasure is generated (sukha-anubhavaat) by the enjoyment of pleasure, and (api) also (duHkha-sa.nskaara-aashayaH) vehicle of the potency of pain is generated (duHkha-anubhavaat iti) by the suffering of pain. (evam) By this (anubhuuyamaane) experiencing (vipaake) the fruition (karmabhyaH) of actions, (sukhe-duHkhe vaa) in the form of pleasure and pain, (karmaashaya-prachayaH punaH) the vehicle of actions is accumulated again, (iti) this is called as the pain of habituation.
(evam) In this way (idam) this is (anaadiH) eternal (duHkha-srotaH) stream of painfulness (viprasritam) which thus following voluminously (udvejayati) grieves, (pratikuulaatmakatvaat) on being contrary, (yoginam) to the Yogi (eva) alone. (kasmaat) Why does this grieve to the Yogi alone? (hi) Because (vidvaan) the wise-man = Yogi (akShi-paatra-kalpaH iti) have similarity to an eyeball. (yathaa) As (uurNaa-tantuH) a thread of wool (nyastaH) thrown into (akShi-paatre) the eye (duHkhayati) pains (sparshena) by mere touch (cha) but (na) not so, (anyeShu gaatraavayaveShu) by coming into contact with other organs of the body. (evam) This way (etaani duHkhaani) these pains (klishnanti) afflict (yoginam eva) the Yogi alone, while at the time of experiencing pleasure, (akShipaatra-kalpam) since tendered as eye-ball, (na) but not (itaram) anyone else (pratipattaaram) whom these pains reach.
(itaram) The other human beings, (tu) however, (tyajantam) give up the pain, (upaattam upaattam) after they have again-again (svakarma-upahritam duHkham) experience the pain received as the fruition of their own actions, and (upaadadaanam) again take these pains up (tyaktam tyaktam) after having repeatedly given them up, (samantataH anuviddham iva) who are all-round as it were pierced through, (anaadi-vaasanaa-vichitrayaa chitta-vrittyaa) by the modifications of mind which are full of afflictions, variegated by eternal residual potencies, (aha~Nkaara-mamakaara-anupaatinam) who follow in the wake of the "I" and the "mine", (avidyayaa) by Nescience, (haatavyaa eva) in relation to things = objects that should be left apart, So, (jaatam jaatam) the souls taking births again and again, on account of reasons explained above, (anuplavante) receives (triparvaaNah) three-fold (taapaaH) pains (baahya-aadhyaatmika-ubhaya-nimittaaH) caused by both external and internal means. (tadevam) For this reason (yogii) the Yogi (driShTvaa) then sees, (aatmaanam) himself (cha) and (bhuutagraamam) world of living beings, (vyuhyamaanam) surrounded (anaadinaa duHkha-srotasaa) by the eternal flow of pain, (prapadyate) turns for (sharaNam) refuge to (samyag-darshanam) real-cognition i.e., discriminative knowledge of Soul and Matter, which is (sarva-duHkha-kShaya-kaaraNam iti) the cause of the destruction of all pains.
(cha) And (guNa-vritti-virodhaat) because of the contrariety of functioning of the Qualities, (sarvam duHkham eva) all = everything made of Matter, is indeed pain (vivekinaH) to the discriminating. Since (buddhi-guNaaH) the "Qualities" of the Matter are manifested in the mind, (prakhyaa-pravritti-sthiti-ruupaaH) being of the nature of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia, (paraspara-anugraha-tantrii bhuutvaa) on becoming dependent upon one another for mutual help, (aarabhante) set the motion of (shaantam) a quiescent, (ghoram) a disturbed (vaa) or (muuDham) a delusive (pratyayam) motion = knowledge, (triguNam eva) which is possessed of all the three Qualities. (cha) And so, formed knowledge is not stable since (guNa-vrittam) functioning of the Qualities (chalam iti) is not stable = is highly changeable. So, (chittam) the mind (uktam) is said to (kShipra-pariNaami) have the nature of changing quality. In the mind (ruupa-atishayaaH) the intensities of nature i.e., virtue, knowledge, desirelessness, powerfulness or vice, ignorance, desire-fullness, and supine-ness, (cha) and (vrittyatishayaaH) intensities of the modifications of quietness, disturbed or delusion (virudhyante) are contradictory (paraspareNa) to one another, (i.e., at the time of intensity of virtue, the vice will not exist in intensity, etc.) (tu) but (saamaanyaani) the ordinary position of these (pravarttante) exists = functions (saha) with (atishayaiH) the opposite intense quality (i.e., the ordinary form of vice will exist along with the intense form of virtue). (evam) This way (ete) these (guNaaH) Qualities (upaarjita-sukha-duHkha-moha-pratyayaaH) bring about the notion of pleasure, pain, and delusion (itaretara-aashrayeNa) by each sub-serving the others. (iti) So, (sarve) all the material objects (bhavanti) are (sarva-ruupaaH) of the form of pleasure, pain, and delusion. (tu) But (eShaam visheShaH) the differential notion of a Quality is known (guNa-pradhaana-bhaava-kritaH iti) by the Quality which is in the leading factory. (tasmaat) Thus for this reason (sarvam) all the material objects = subjects (duHkham eva) are painful, only (vivekinaH iti) to the discriminating.
(prabhava-biijam) The root cause of (tat asya) this (mahataH) large (duHkha-samudaayasya) heap of pains (avidyaa) is Nescience. (cha) And (abhaava-hetuH) the mean to remove = destroy (tasyaaH) the Nescience (samyag-darshanam) is real cognition.
(yathaa) As (chikitsaa-shaastram) the science of medicine has (chatur-vyuuham) four departments, i.e., (rogaH) disease, (roga-hetuH) the cause of disease, (aarogyam) the absence of disease, and (bhaiShajyam iti) the medicine = the means of its removal. (evam) So, (api) also (idam shaastram) this science of Yoga (chatur-vyuuham eva) has four departments. (tad-yathaa) It is thus divided as (sa.nsaaraH) the universe in evolution, (sa.nsaara-hetuH) the cause of the universe in evolution, (mokShaH) salvation = emancipation, and (mokSha-upaayaH iti) means of salvation. (tatra) Of these (sa.nsaaraH) the universe in evolution (duHkha-bahulaH) being full of pain is (heyaH) avoidable. (sa.nyogaH) The conjunction of (pradhaana-puruShayoH) the Soul and the Matter is (heyahetuH) the cause of this avoidable - universe in evolution. (aatyantikii nivrittiH) The ultimate removal of (sa.nyogasya) the conjunction of the Soul and the Matter is (haanam) salvation. And (samyag-darshanam) the real cognition (= the discriminating knowledge) of material objects and the Soul is (haana-upaayaH) the cause of salvation.
(tatra) Here (haatuH svaruupam) the own conscious form of the remover i.e., the Soul (na bhavitum arhati) is not to be taken as (upaadeyam vaa) an object of desire to be aimed at or (heyam vaa iti) an object to be avoided. (haane) In case the conscious form of the Soul is considered avoidable, then (tasya uchchheda-vaada-prasa~NgaH) the concept of its destruction would come in, (cha) and (upaadaane) in case it is considered as an object of desire to be aimed at, then (hetuvaadaH) the theory of its being the effect of some preceding cause would come in. (ubhaya-pratyaakhyaane) By not accepting both the above concepts about the conscious form of Soul, (shaashvata-vaadaH iti) the theory of its eternal immutability will only remain. (etat) To know this type of conscious form of the Soul (samyag-darshanam) is real cognition = true knowledge.
Vedic Commentary in English : The Soul gets a superior life-state, lifetime, and life experience on account of the fruition of virtuous vehicle of actions, and on receiving the present superior birth he experiences the various types of material enjoyments and has pleasure in the fruition system of GOD. However, he is not able to understand and experience the hidden pains behind these pleasure experiences. On the other hand, Yogi = discriminator clearly sees the mixture of various types of pains in the pleasure experiences that are receivable in the material worldly enjoyments. So, he considers these material enjoyments as worth abandonable as food which is mixed up with poison.
Human beings who are experiencing pain on account of their vehicle of actions, for them there is pain in life; but why a yogi is able to see the pain at the time of pleasure experiences, while others do not? Because yogi is tendered as like an eyeball. As a thread of wool or dust particle does not pain while coming into contact with other parts of the body, but if the same is thrown into the eye it pains by mere touch and one remains in pain till the same is not taken out from the eyeball. In the same way, the yogi = discriminator sees three types of pains in material enjoyment. These are pains of consequence, pains of anxiety, and pains of habituation, and all the objects are painful on account of the contrariety of the function of Qualities.
In order to understand the pains of consequence, anxiety, and habituation, we must understand some basic states which are defined by Seer Vyaasa as follows —
1. Vehicle of actions from Attachment:- One experiences various types of pleasures on account of animate objects i.e., spouse, children, parents, friends, relatives, animals, etc and inanimate objects i.e., house, property, etc., So, he has an attachment for such objects. The vehicle of actions created by performing mental, verbal, and physical acts on account of such attachment is known as the "vehicle of actions from attachment". Because of this attachment, he performs various types of virtue, vice, and mixed-up acts, as he performs virtuous acts on account of attachment; and on account of this attachment only, he performs various vicious acts in order to have the well-being of various animate objects and to increase of inanimate objects.
2. Vehicle of actions from Aversion:- One has a feeling of aversion against the causes = persons which come in his way for the enjoyment of above said animate and inanimate means of pleasure. On account of such aversion, he performs vicious acts towards such persons. The vehicle of action created by performing mental, verbal, and physical vicious acts on account of such aversion is known as the "vehicle of actions from aversion".
3. Vehicle of actions from Illusion:- On account of Nescience, he considers the increase of animate and inanimate means of pleasure as his own increase, and their decrease = destruction as his own decrease = destruction, and becomes so deeply involved with them that he has the illusion for these objects. The vehicle of action created by illusion is known as the "vehicle of actions from illusion".
4. Vehicle of actions caused by Violence:- Seer Vyaasa said that enjoyment of material objects is not possible without causing pain to other living beings. The vehicle of actions generated by causing violence to other living beings for one's enjoyment, which causes pain to such other living beings, is known as the "vehicle of actions caused by violence". Pains to other living beings are mainly by physical acts, and hence by beating, killing, and paining other living beings, the vehicle of actions is said to be caused by violence. As it has been said in Manusmriti—
pa~nch suunaa grihasthasya chullii peShaNyupaskaraH.
kaNdanii chodakubhaH-cha badhyate yaastu vaahayan. Manusmriti 3.68.
There are five places of violence for a human being i.e., hearth, quern (mill), broom, mortar, and water jar, on using these objects, people accumulate a vehicle of actions caused by violence.
If using the essential needs of life, violence is caused, then for the enjoyment of other material objects, a higher level of violence can be inferred.
5. Concept of Pleasure and Pain:- What is a material pleasure? The satisfaction of desire which comes from calming down of the power of senses by the enjoyment of their objects is known as "pleasure" and non-satisfaction of the power of senses, due to their wandering-ness, is said as "pain".
Now in the context of the above definitions let us understand three types of pains —
1. Pains of Consequence:- The worldly objects that are giving pleasure at present, on experience, those alone cause pain as a consequence in the future. During the pleasure time of enjoyment, the vehicle of actions from attachment, aversion, illusion, and violence gets created in one way or another, and such a vehicle of actions can not result in pleasure in any circumstances. So, pain is hidden as a consequence of every pleasure experience, will be experienced by the person in the coming future.
Again, by continuously experiencing worldly objects the desire for senses cannot be calmed down. On account of the continuous experience of material objects, the dexterity of the power of the senses increases, and attachment to the material objects also increases. In this way by an increase in attachment towards material objects, he again wishes to enjoy the worldly objects, and this sequence continues. And this way vehicle of actions by attachment keeps on increasing. In this regard, Bhartihari had said very beautifully that —
bhogaa na bhuktaa vayameva bhuktaaH tapo na taptam vayameva taptaaH.
kaalo na yaato vayameva yaataaH triShNaa na jiirNaa vayameva jiirNaaH.
(Vairagya-shataka 7)
it means that worldly objects are not experienced, but we get exhausted; we have not performed purificatory acts, but we got affected by three types of pains; we could not spend time in virtuous acts, but got old in the desires of material things; our desires have not finished, but we become old that now we are unable to experience the worldly objects.
na jaatu kaamaH kaamaanaam-upbhogena shaamyati.
haviShaa kriShNavartmeva bhuuya eva-abhivardhate. Manusmriti 2.69.
It is certain that as the fire increases by putting fuel in it, So, the desire for material objects cannot be calmed down by their experiences. So, the person should not remain involved in the material objects to become satisfied.
It has been rightly said with regard to a person who wishes to have pleasure from material objects, that one who ran away being afraid of the bite of a scorpion and got bitten by a snake. As a bite of a scorpion pains for a little time and its poison can be removed easily, but the poison of a snake can result in death even; in the same way, the person has to experience more pain by experiencing the material objects in order to satisfy the desire of power of senses. Why? Because, if that person had born the non-satisfaction of the power of senses for the time being, then after some time the pain of non-satisfaction will also calm down slowly. But by experiencing those material objects he had accumulated the vehicle of action caused by attachment, aversion, violence, etc. which will result in more pains on its fruition and he had to experience it under the fruition system of GOD. This is a pain of consequence.
2. Pain of Anxiety:- The person who experiences pleasure on account of conscious beings (spouse, children, relatives, animals, etc.) and unconscious material objects (wealth, property, etc.), also experience pains from the means = persons who cause hindrance for his enjoyments for such objects. He accumulates a vehicle of actions from an aversion towards such means and/or persons. In fact, he experiences more pains only on account of creation, safe-guarding, increases, destruction, etc. of those animate and inanimate objects. For receiving these objects from other human/living beings, he favors = obliges some of them by right or wrong acts, and causes harm to others. These obligations and pains to others are not limited to the accumulation of these objects only, but their scope gets wider for their increase, safeguarding also (as he performs various vicious acts for their increase and stops their destruction i.e he gives bribes to the authorities to save his wealth earned by illegal means). In this way, he accumulates vicious and mixed-up vehicles of actions by obliging and paining others. Such a vehicle of actions is created on account of greed and illusion towards such objects. In this way, the vehicle of actions generated by vicious acts is painful to fruition. This is called the pain of anxiety.
3. Pain of Habituation:- Residual potencies of pleasures are generated by the enjoyment of pleasure and residual potencies of pains are generated by the suffering of pains. On account of such potencies, one performs those types of acts again; and from those acts again he experiences pleasure and pain, and again such type of residual potencies is generated; this vicious cycle of act-residual potency-act continues with the Soul, in every birth, since eternity. On account of such residual potencies, one has an attachment towards the means of pleasure, by such attachment, one performs various types of virtuous-vicious acts and accumulates the same type of vehicle of actions; in the same way, one has aversion towards the means of pains, by such aversion he performs various types of vicious acts and accumulates the same type of vicious vehicle of actions. Because of this cycle, the Soul is moving in the life-cycle of this world for eternity. Vehicle of actions from attachment and aversion are mixed up with the residual potencies of pleasure and pains in such a way that he primarily accumulates the afflicted vehicle of actions, and this afflicted vehicle of actions adversely affects his present life as well as the future lives also. So, the Bhoja had clearly said in this regard that on account of the creation of endless residual potencies, the life-cycle never ends, hence all the objects and experiences are pain only. It means that non-cessation of afflictions of Nescience etc., virtue-vice acts, its fruition, and its potencies, all the material objects and enjoyments are pains only.
These three types of pains primarily grieve the yogi = discriminator alone, other human beings do not get worried even. Because of cognizance of the real form of objects, he becomes like an eyeball, So, these pains afflict the yogi alone. Other human beings, experience these three-fold pains, in various life-states = births, received as the fruition of their own virtue-vice-mixed-up actions, and perform the same type of acts again, on account of their accumulated residual potencies, and with the result receive the same type of pains, again and again, are totally affected by the afflicted modifications - afflicted potencies - afflicted modifications since eternity and therefore are totally involved in the wake of "I" and "mine", and have attachment in this world and material objects which are avoidable = abandon-able, on account of nescience, and experience all type of pains.
4. Contrariety of the functioning of the Qualities:- Matter is the equilibrium state of three Qualities namely Illumination, Activity, and Inertia, and all the material objects are of three-fold Qualities. These three qualities are in the nature of friendship with one another. In the three Qualities, the Quality of Illumination is of the nature of knowledge, light, etc.; the Quality of Activity is of the nature of movement; and the Quality of Inertia is of the nature of giving shape, stability, etc. The mind of the person is also of three-fold Qualities. So, when Illumination Quality is dominant in the mind and Qualities of Activity and Inertia are secondary, then one experience pleasure; when Activity Quality is dominant in the mind and Qualities of Illumination and Inertia are secondary, then one experience pain; and when there is a dominance of Inertia Quality in the mind and Qualities of Illumination and Activity are secondary, then one experience delusion, illusion, etc. These three qualities do not remain in a stable stage i.e., at one time one Quality dominates and the other is secondary, at another time some other Quality dominates and the other two are secondary. For this reason, the mind is said to be highly changeable in nature. In the mind, two opposite qualities cannot dominate at one time, if one is dominating other will exist as secondary i.e., in a normal state. This conception is to be understood as follows — when virtue is dominating, the vice exists in the ordinary state; when true knowledge dominates, the nescience exists in the ordinary state; when desirelessness is dominating, then desire-full-ness exists in the ordinary state; when powerfulness is dominating, then supine-ness exist in the ordinary state; and same is to be understood in opposite position also, i.e., when vice, etc. are dominating, then virtue, etc. exist in the ordinary state. In the same way, out of pleasure-full, painful, and illusion-full states, when one state dominates in the mind, then the other two exist in the ordinary state. It means that at the time of dominance of pleasure, pain, and illusion exist normally; at the time of dominance of pain, pleasure and illusion exist normally; and at the time of dominance of illusion, pleasure, and pain exist normally. So, in all the conditions, complete cessation of pain does not take place for the Soul; either it exists in the dominance mode or the normal mode. This is called pain on account of the contrariety of functioning of Qualities. So, for the yogi, all objects, and all worldly affairs are pain only.
The root cause of all the pain is Nescience. The mean for its removal = destruction is real cognition. The cause of the conjunction of the Soul with this painful abandonable world is Nescience; total removal of pain is possible by breaking the above-said conjunction and its means is real cognition. Real cognition does not merely mean real verbal knowledge of Matter and Soul, but the cognition of real forms of Matter and its products, Soul, and GOD in the state of Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive Trances, is real cognition. Before this state, merely by the study of the real form of above said objects in the various scriptures, the removal of pains is not possible.
Seer Vyaasa described how the real cognition of the Soul takes place. In this regard it is said that the form of the Soul is not avoidable, since by believing this, his destruction will be desired; nor the form of Soul is of desire to be aimed at, since by believing this then the cause of accepting its form is required to be explained i.e., Soul will be proved as non-eternal on having some cause of his existence. So, the Soul is an eternal object that is neither avoidable nor desired, and his cognizance in this conscious form, in the trance, is his real cognition.
So, by knowing the three types of pains in the material objects and enjoyments and knowing the painfulness of everything on account of the contrariety of functioning of Qualities, the devotee becomes desireless from this world, and then only he is able to perform various means to leave these, not otherwise.
