Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 16
In English:
Component Word : heyam duHkham anaagatam.
Preface to Sutra in English : tadetachChaastram chaturvyuuhamityabhidhiiyate —
Meaning in English : (tat etat shaastram) The science of Yoga (chatur-vyuuham) is of four departments, (iti) this is (abhi-dhiiyate) now explained in the coming aphorisms —
Sutra in English : heya.m duHkhamanaagatam.16.
Meaning in English : (duHkham) The pain (anaagatam) which has not come yet (= which can be received in future), (heyam) is avoidable.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : duHkhamatiitamupabhogenaativaahitam na heyapakShe varttate. varttamaanam cha svakShaNe bhogaaruuDhamiti na tatkShaNaantare heyataamaapadyate. tasmaadyadevaanaagatam duHkham tadevaakShipaatrakalpam yoginam klishnaati netaram pratipattaaram. tadeva heyataamaapadyate.
Meaning In English : (duHkham) The pain (atiitam) which has passed away (ativaahitam) is no more, (upabhogena) since experienced, (i.e., the pain received in past had since experienced, So, is not available now) So, (na varttate) cannot fall (heya-pakShe) within the sphere of avoidable. (cha) And (varttamaanam) the pain which is present (bhogaaruuDham) is under the process of being experienced (svakShaNe) at the time of its existence, (iti) So, (tat) this pain also (na aapadyate) cannot be considered (heyataam) in the category of avoidable (kShaNaantare) with reference to the future moments. (tasmaat) Hence (duHkham) the pain (yat eva) which is (anaagatam) yet to come (= can be experienced in future), (tat eva) that pain only (klishnaati) afflicts (yoginam) the Yogi (akShipaatrakalpam) which is sensitive as an eye-ball; (na) it does not (itaram pratipattaaram) trouble any other knower = other human beings. So, (tat eva) that future pain alone (aapadyate) comes (heyataam) in the sphere of avoidable.
Vedic Commentary in English : Pain is mixed up in all the enjoyments of the world, and that pain is on account of consequence, anxiety, and habituation and on account of the contrariety of functioning of Qualities; hence all the objects of this material world and its enjoyments are ultimately painful. Seer Patanjali had said that pain is avoidable. But all the pains do not come in the category of avoidable. The pains which were experienced in the past, are not available after experience and hence cannot be avoided. The pains which are under experience in the present, will not remain after such experience. So, they are also not avoidable due to their non-existence after such experiences.
So whichever pain is receivable in the future, that alone can be avoided. This future pain afflicts the yogi alone, not other common people. Someone can question here that the pain has not come yet, then why should one become sad for that and adopt the means to avoid it? The answer is very simple that as a common man does not perform against the rules of society and/or the country where he resides; and does not perform evils in order not to become guilty of being put behind bars and bear the pains of living behind bars. As the pain of living behind bars has not come yet, but the person avoids such acts in order to avoid such pain to be received in the future life; in the same way, Yogi does not put effort into procuring material enjoyment, since there is a mixture of pains of consequence, anxiety, and habituation in their enjoyments.
SeerGautama had said that birth is the cause of pain in his Nyaaya aphorism 1.1.2. Since for birth, the soul is to compulsorily bear the pains of living in the womb of the mother; then after the birth, the compulsory pain of death will also take place. The pains of living in the womb of mothers in previous births, cannot be avoided, since experienced, and nor the pains of death in those births can be avoided. In this same way, the pain of living in the womb of the mother in the present birth also cannot be avoided, since experienced; and the pain of death in the present birth will have been born since death is compulsory after taking birth in a particular body and nobody can avoid this. So, by adopting such means that future births should not take place, the pains of living in the womb of the mother for future births, pains to be receivable by the experience of worldly enjoyments in those births and death in those life-states will not take place, and this is possible.
This pain which has not come yet is only avoidable. By knowing the causes of such future pains (which are yet to come), by knowing the means to avoid them, and by performing according to those means, the future pains can be avoided; there is no other path. The intellects had clearly said that the root cause of all pains is Nescience, and this fact is established by Seer Patanjali in this philosophy.
