Meaning In English : (draShTaaH) The knower is (puruShaH) the Soul who (pratisamvedii) cognizes (buddheH) the mind and all the experiences resulting from material objects through the mind. (drishyaaH) "Drishya" this word means (sarve dharmaaH) all the characteristics = properties of the Matter (buddhi-sattvo-paaruuDhaaH) becoming present in the essence of the Mind. (tat etat) And this (drishyam) mind = mental essence (ayaskaanta-maNikalpam) behaves like a magnet, and (sannidhimaatra-upakaari) being nearer to the Soul, is useful = become obligor for the Soul; (drishyatvena) on account of its capacity of knowability, it (bhavati) becomes (svam) the property (svaaminaH) of the lord, (drishiruupasya puruShasya) the Soul who is the knower of all these material objects through mind, (yataH) since this mind (aapannam) becomes (anubhava-karma-viShayataam) the object of experience for the Soul. (anya-svaruupeNa pratilabdhaatmakam) drishya = Matter gaining the workability power from the Soul (= Supreme Soul), (svatantram api) though it is the independent material cause of the universe, (paraarthatvaat) but since becomes mean of experience and salvation of the Soul, (paratantram) it is under the control of the Soul (= Supreme Soul) So, is dependent to it. (iti arthaH) It means that (anaadiH) the eternal (sa.nyogaH) conjunction of (tayoH) both i.e., (drig-darshana-shaktyoH) the Soul and the Matter, (arthakritaH) brought about for fulfilling the purpose of the Soul, (kaaraNam) is the cause of (heyahetuH duHkhasya) avoidable pain.
(tathaa cha uktam) And so, it has been said that (tat sa.nyogahetu-vivarjanaat) "By removing the cause i.e., the conjunction of the Soul and Matter, (ayam) this (duHkha) avoidable pain (aatyantikaH syaat) is completely (pratiikaaraH) removed = destroyed." (kasmaat) How? Since (parihaaryasya duHkha-hetoH) by removing the avoidable cause of pain (pratikaara-darshanaat) removal of it is seen i.e., by removing the cause, its result cannot take place. (tad yathaa) As for example — (bhedyataa) "piercing of (paadatalasya) sole of the foot" is the pain; (kaNTakasya bhettritvam) "the piercing of the foot by the thorn" is the cause of the pain; (kaNTakasya parihaaraH) "removing = avoiding the thorn" is meant to remove that pain; So, (paadaanadhiShThanam) "not putting the foot on the thorn, (vaa) or (adhiShThaanam) putting it (paada-traana-vyavahitena) with a shoe on" removes the avoidable pain. (yaH) Whoever (loke) in the world (vedaH) knows (etat trayam) these three things, (saH) he, (tatra) in this case, (pratikaaram aarabhamaaNaH) removing the cause of pain (na aapnoti) does not suffer (duHkham) the pain caused by (bhedajam) the prick. (kasmaat) How = by what means? (tritva-upalabdhi-saamarthyaat iti) By the power of three-fold knowledge as above.
(atra api) And here (= in the context of the experience of pain), too, (taapakasya rajasaH) it is the quality of disturbing motion, which is (sattvam) present in the mind, (eva tapyam) that only brings about the pain. (kasmaat) Why? Since (tapikriyaayaaH) the act of paining (karmasthatvaat) exists in the action alone. So, (tapikriyaa) the experience of pain takes place (sattve karmaNi) in the mind which has the Quality of Illumination and illuminates the objects; (na) not in (apariNaamini) the unchangeable (niShkriye) and action-less (= devoid of actions of material objects) (kShetraGYe) knower = the Soul. Then why the pain is experienced by the Soul? (darshitaviShayatvaat) Since the Soul is the viewer of the objects = subjects present in the mind, (tadaakaara-anurodhii) follows along the lines of phenomena of the mind, and, (tu) however, (sattve tapyamaane) when the mind is pained (puruShaH) the Soul (anutapyate iti) also experience the pain, since being attached to the mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali is explaining the cause of pains that are receivable to the Soul. He said that the conjunction of the Soul, who is the knower, with the Matter and its objects are the root cause of all the pains to the Soul; and this conjunction takes on account of Nescience. Why? See, Matter and Soul are entirely different from each other in nature. Their difference is to be understood as follows:-
Soul Matter
1. Is a conscious object. Is not a conscious object.
2. Experiences the enjoyment. Is the object of enjoyment.
3. Devoid of Qualities of Is the combination of three Qualities.
Illumination etc. and their properties
4. Does not take any form. All material objects are made of it only.
5. Is not changeable. On account of changes in Qualities, this
world gets created.
6. Is independent and fulfills his own Is not independent and is for the object of object. other i.e., it is for the fulfillment of objects
of the enjoyment and salvation of the Soul.
The Soul, who is of such nature and form, on forgetting his pure form on account of Nescience moves toward the Matter for having enjoyment and experiences, through the mind, and then he receives pains. In such cases, Matter and its products become available to the knower = Soul through the mind. As a magnet attracts the iron near to it, in the same way, Matter, becoming available in various ways, in the form of enjoyment and illusion, attracts the Soul and makes available various experiences for him. All the products and properties of Matter become available in the mind to become the experiences for the Soul. Being the knower = cognisor of the mind, the Soul experiences these objects = subjects. In fact, Matter is an independent and eternal object just like the Soul, and it is the independent material cause of the universe, in the control of the Supreme Lord GOD; but being for the purpose of others, it serves both the purposes of experience and salvation to the Soul.
When the Soul accepts the three-fold form of the Matter for pleasure, then he automatically receives the chain of pains along with the pleasure. The conjunction of Soul and Matter is said as eternal. In fact, this conjunction is eternal by the flow. When one destroys this conjunction by discriminative knowledge, then one attains salvation. In the fruition system of GOD, he remains away from all types of pains during the period of salvation; and after the salvation period, the Soul again gets conjunct with the Matter, on account of Nescience = Indiscrimination, and experiences pains again. SeerKapila had declared this Nescience also as eternal by flow, and given two reasons for it —
anaadiH-aviveko.anyathaa doShadvayaprasakteH. Saankhya Philosophy 6.12.
It means that Indiscrimination is eternal, just like the darkness; otherwise, its beginning is to be accepted. If its beginning is accepted then two defects will manifest —
1. If Indiscrimination is not accepted as eternal, i.e., having some beginning point of time, then this creation-cycle of the universe is also to be accepted as non-eternal; however, it is said as eternal in Vedas; (or on accepting the starting point of Indiscrimination, the emancipated Souls will automatically get conjunct with it, and come in the state of bondage on account of such indiscrimination.)
2. On accepting its starting point, many questions will arise, i.e., — What is its cause? Is it the acts of Souls or any other cause? If acts of Souls are its cause, then what is the cause of acts? In the same way, if some other cause is there, then what is the cause of that cause? In this way, the defect of disorder will be there.
So, as indiscrimination = Nescience is eternal, in the same way, the conjunction of the Soul with the Matter, on account of Indiscrimination, is also eternal by the flow. The mean for the removal of all the pains resulting from such conjunction is said as real cognizance in aphorism 2.15 above. By this real cognizance, complete removal of pains takes place for a very long period = salvation period. As on the non-existence of cause, its results also do not manifest, in the same way with the removal of conjunction, all the pains, arising on account of the conjunction of Soul and Matter, also cease to exist.
While giving an example in this regard Seer Vyaasa said that as the piercing of the foot by a thorn is the cause of pain, So, by not putting a foot on the thorn, or putting the foot on the thorn after wearing a shoe, the foot does not get pierced and one does not receive pain. In this way, the Activity (=disturbing motion) Quality of the Matter is the cause of pain in this world. Illumination Quality is in the form of pleasure, Activity Quality is in the form of pain, and Inertia Quality is in the form of illusion. Because of this Activity Quality only, disturbing motion takes place in the mind which has the nature of Illumination; since the manifestation of pain takes place by the action alone. The experience of pain takes place in the mind only. So, Activity Quality manifests pain, and Illumination Quality in the form of mind gets the experience of pain. The experience of pain does take place in the mind only which is active and changeable in nature; not in the Soul who is not changeable, on account of Qualities of Matter or otherwise, and/or where no activity does take place on account of Qualities. But the Soul being the knower of modification of mind, an experience that pain which is present there. In fact, on account of the conjunction of Matter-Soul only, Soul considers the properties, of pleasure-pain-illusion, of Qualities = Matter as his own properties and accordingly feels as pleasure-full, painful, and illusion-full.
In the coming aphorisms, Seer Patanjali had described the form of the Matter and its objects, the Soul and their conjunction and its cause nescience, means for its removal and state of cessation of pain.
