Meaning In English : (sattvam) The Quality of Essentiality is (prakaasha-shiilam) of the nature of Illumination; (rajaH) Energy is (kriyaashiilam) of the nature of Activity; (tamaH) Inertia is (sthiti-shiilam iti) of the nature of inactivity. (ete) These (guNaaH) three "Qualities" are (uparaktaaH) being coloured (prasparaH) by one another, and (pravibhaagaaH) in the form of i.e., its parts are (pariNaaminaH) ever-transforming = resulting in other objects by change of form; (sa.nyoga-viyoga-dharmaaNaH) have the characteristics of conjunction and separation; (upaarjita-muurttayaH) manifest tangible forms (itaretara-upaashrayeNa) by the support of one-another; (asambhinna-shakti-pravibhaagaaH) each one maintain its distinctive power into those of others (paraspara-a~Nga-a~Ngitve api) even though one may exist as the principal factor of a phenomenon, with the others as secondary thereto; (tulyajaatiiya-atulyajaatiiya-shakti-bheda-anupaatinaH) take to the line of different manifestation of power in the object of same or different classes; (pradhaanavelaayaam) when one is the principal factor of phenomenon, it (upadarshita-sannidhaanaaH) shows its nature and presence in close contact; (cha) and (guNatve api) even though present a subsidiary Quality also (pradhaana-antarNiita-anumitaastitaaH) their existence as subsidiary energies of the principal factor is inferred (vyaapaara-maatreNa) by their distinct and independent functioning; (prayukta-saamarthyaaH) their powers come into manifestation (puruShaartha-karttavyatayaa) for fulfilment of objects of the Soul; (sannidhimaatra-upakaariNiH) become beneficial by mere proximity, (ayaskaanta-maNikalpaaH) acting in the same way as loadstone; (anu-varttamaanaaH) follow along the (vrittim) line of manifestation = working of (ekatamasya) the principal Quality (pratyayam-antareNa) without showing their presence; (pradhaana-shabda-vaachyaa bhavanti) are called by the name of "Pradhaana" = the Matter. (etat) These three Qualities = Matter as a whole (uchyate) is called as (drishyam iti) knowable.
(tat etat) This = the three Qualities (= Matter) is (bhuuta-indriyaatmakam) of the form of elements = objects and organs. It is (pariNamate) transformed (bhuuta-bhaavena) as an object and element i.e., (sukShma-sthuulena prithivyaadinaa) gross objects as earth, etc., and subtle elements as ethers (i.e., odoriferous, etc.). (tathaa) And in the same way, these Qualities (pariNamate) evolve as (indriya-bhaavena) powers of sensation i.e., (sukShma-sthuulena shrotraadinaa iti) the subtle and gross auditory powers, etc. (tat tu) This transformation of three Qualities into objects and powers of sensation is (na aprayojanam) not purposeless; (apitu) but (pravarttate) this activity of transformation starts (prayojanam urariikritya) with a set of purpose for it, (iti) So, the object (tad drishyam) of the "Knowable" is, (hi) of course, (bhoga-apavargaartham) the fulfillment of experience and salvation (puruShasya iti) of the Soul.
Now, what are experience and salvation? (tatra) Of these, (bhogaH) experience is (iShTa-aniShTa-guNa-svaruupa-ava-dhaaraNam avibhaagaa-pannam) obtaining the knowledge of the nature of desirable and undesirable phenomena of the "Qualities" and that too without having distinctive knowledge of the Soul and Mind. It means without knowing the distinct nature and identity of the mind from himself, recognizing the pleasure and pain present in the mind, by the Soul, is called experience. And what is salvation? (apavargaH) Salvation = emancipation is (svaruupa-avadhaaraNam) ascertainment of the distinct form = nature of (bhoktuH iti) the Soul. (dvayoH atiriktam) Apart from the two i.e., experience and salvation (na asti) there is no (anyat darshanam) other knowledge i.e., either there is experience or there is salvation for the Soul.
(tathaa cha uktam) And So, it has been said — (ayam tu) "And this one (= i.e., person with irrational knowledge), (khalu) however, (triShu guNeShu karttriShu) out of the three "Qualities" in the creation mode (cha) and (chaturthe) the fourth (puruShe) Soul which (akarttari) does not have actions of that of "Qualities", (tulya-atulya-jaatiiye) and is of the same class that of "Qualities" on account of existence and subtlety, but not of the same class on account of knowledge and non-changeability, and who is (tat kriyaasaakShiNii) viewer of all activities of "Qualities", (na sha~Nkate iti) does not suspect (anyat darshanam) existence of any other knowledge than that of experience, while (anupashyan) seeing = experiencing, (upapannaan) in reality, (sarva-bhaavaan) all the pains and pleasures (upaniiyamaanaan) becoming present in the mind on account of the Qualities".
Now (tau etau) these two (bhoga-apavargau) experiences and salvation, (buddhi-kritau) being on account of knowledge, are (varttamaanau) present (buddhau eva) in the mind, then (katham) how these (vyapadishyete) are predicated (puruShe iti) of the Soul? (yathaa cha) As (jayaH) victory (vaa) and (paraajayo) defeat (varttamaanaH) existing (yoddhriShu) in the soldiers and (vyapadishyate) predicated (svaamini) of their master, (hi) since (saH) he is (bhoktaa) enjoyer of (tat phalasya iti) the fruits thereof; (evam) So, are (bandha-mokShau) bondage and emancipation = salvation (varttamaanau) existing (buddhau eva) in the mind alone (vyapadishyete) predicated (puruShe) of the Soul (hi) since (saH) he is (bhoktaa) enjoyer of (tat phalasya iti) their fruits i.e., experience and salvation. So, (puruShaartha-aparisamaaptiH) the non-fulfillment of the objects (for the Soul) (buddheH eva) of the mind alone is (bandhaH) bondage; and (tadartha-avasaanaH) fulfillment of its objects for the Soul is (mokShaH iti) salvation.
(etena) Similarly, it is clear that (grahaNa-dhaarana-uuhaa-apoha-tattvaGYaana-abhiniveshaaH) perception, retention, judgment, rejection, knowledge of realities, and the distinction of unrealities, whose (adhyaaropita-sadbhaavaaH) existence fastened (puruShe) on to the Soul, although (buddhau varttamaanaaH) their existence is in the mind, (hi) since (saH) he is (bhoktaa) enjoyer of (tat phalasya iti) their fruits.
Vedic Commentary in English : Knowable — What is knowable, that on getting conjunct with it, the Soul experiences pleasure and pains? What is its form? How does it work? What purposes does it serve? Seer Patanjali said that it is Matter, which is in the form of Qualities of Illumination, Energy = Activity, and Inertia, and its variated objects become available in the form of gross and subtle objects and sense-work organs, and these all created objects serve the purpose of providing experience and salvation to the Soul.
The combination of Qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia is said as Matter. Where Quality of Illumination is of the nature of illuminating other objects; Quality of Energy is of the nature of activity and Quality of Inertial is the nature of inactivity and stability. When these three qualities are in equilibrium, then these are called Matter i.e., the Matter is in the non-manifested original form of material cause only and there is no other product. When these Qualities come in the state of disequilibrium, by the force of GOD, then these take various forms, in the principal and secondary forms, and the creation of this universe starts. The various states = properties = activities of these Qualities are described as —
1. These Qualities take various forms, by being mixed up with one another, becoming parts of those objects.
2. These Qualities have the characteristics of conjunction and separation, i.e., on getting conjunct, various products are formed; and on having separation the produced products get destroyed.
3. These Qualities manifest various tangible forms by the support of one another, i.e., these get the various stages of grossness in the creation process, where the earth is the grossest stage in the creation.
4. These Qualities exist together in various products in the principal or secondary form; where one Quality exists as a principal and the other two exist as a secondary one. Even becoming available in such products, they maintain individual forms and power separately. i.e., even existing as a secondary object, their power does not cease to exist.
5. These Qualities exist as power in various objects of the same or different classes.
6. Whichever Quality exists as a principal factor in an object, that shows its nature and presence primarily. As the Quality of Illumination exists primarily in the mind, So, the mind is the means for illuminating all objects.
7. Wherever Qualities exist as subsidiary / secondary, they remain present in their form in the functioning of primary Quality, and their presence is inferred by the distinct and independent functioning.
8. These come into manifestation in various forms for the purpose of fulfilling the objects of the Soul, i.e., this universe is created by GOD for the purpose of experience and salvation of Souls.
9. These Qualities become beneficial to the Souls by mere proximity only, like a magnet = loadstone.
10. The secondary Qualities follow along the line of working with the principal Quality, without showing their presence completely.
So, these Qualities as a whole are called "knowable".
In this way, these Qualities, with various powers = properties, working in various ways, take the form of objects and organs, on coming into the state of disequilibrium. In fact, this universe is a combination of these objects and organs. Objects are of two types - gross and subtle. Subtle objects are odoriferous ether, gustiferous ether, luminiferous ether, tangiferous ether, and soniferous ether; and gross objects are objects made from these subtle objects respectively as earth, water, fire, air, and ether = sky. Organs are also of two types - gross and subtle organs. Subtle organs include the conception of individuality and pure-beness; gross organs are eleven in number and include 5 sense organs, 5 work organs, and the mind. In fact, these gross organs also appear subtle, since are not visible through external organs. The conception of the difference between the grossness and subtleness of these objects and organs is that an object = organ which is last in its production line is known as gross; on the other hand, an object = organ which becomes a material cause for further production in the production line is known as subtle as compared to its gross products. In this way, we see that in the gross objects, the earth is the grossest object, water is more subtle than the earth, fire is more subtle than water, the air is more subtle than fire, and the sky is more subtle than air. But being the last material products in their production line these are called gross objects, though the level of grossness differs in all these five gross objects. In the same way, this is to be known in the case of organs also. All the eleven organs are also gross products of three Qualities, being the last products from the object known as the conception of individuality (=Egoism), and there being no further product from these. On the basis of this, Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa classified the 5 gross objects and 11 organs as specialized in the next aphorism.
In this way, this universe in the form of objects and organs is made from inanimate Matter, which has no purpose in itself. The Matter is said to be for the purpose of 'other' - and that 'other' is Soul. So, this universe is for the purpose of experience and salvation of the Soul.
What is the experience of the Soul? What is the salvation of the Soul? These two questions are very critical. While answering it is said that when the Soul, without considering himself as distinct from the mind, gets the knowledge of all the objects becoming available in the mind and having the feeling of pleasure-pain-illusion, is "experience". The Soul is said as a cognisor of objects available in the mind. So, he cognizes all the modifications of the mind, and becomes pleasure-full, painful, and illusion-full by taking the form according to those modifications; this is called the experience of the Soul. On the other hand, when the Soul ascertains and cognizes his true form, then it is salvation. There is no other knowledge other than experience and salvation. So, either there will be experience or there will be salvation.
In this regard, Achaarya Panchashika had said that the desire-full person with irrational knowledge, who is the experiencer of pleasure and pains in various life-states since eternity, considers himself in action on account of Nescience and residual potencies. In fact, the action on account of 'Quality of Energy' keeps all three Qualities in action mode. On the other hand, the Soul who is a viewer of all the actions of Qualities, experiences those actions, though the action of Qualities is taking place in the mind alone. Soul considers that the pleasure-pain and illusion which are taking place on account of Qualities are taking place in himself. He cannot understand and know that the states of pleasure-pain and illusion are taking place in his mind, which is a different, changeable, and inanimate object, is different from me. In fact, all the characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes take place in objects and organs only (Ref - etena bhuuta-indriyeShu dharma-lakShaNa-avasthaa-pariNaamaa vyaakhyaataaH. 3.13). These changes never take place in an unchangeable Soul. In the same way the properties of "Qualities'' also remain limited to "Qualities" only, and do not take place in Soul. But on account of Indiscrimination = Nescience, the Soul being getting conjunct with the Matter considers the changes of objects = organs, pleasure-pain-illusion characteristics of Qualities as of himself and with the result get various types of experiences.
All the actions taking place in the mind, though remaining present in the mind alone, are predicated on the Soul since the Soul alone is the enjoyer of their fruits in the form of pleasure and pains. He alone receives experience and salvation. The mind, being an inanimate object, is for the purpose of the Soul only. So, non-cessation of the functioning of the mind is the bondage of the Soul. The Soul will remain in the state of bondage, till he will be experiencing the modifications and properties of the mind. On achieving the discriminating knowledge, when he will cognize the properties and form of Self, and become indifferent (= desireless) towards the Qualities by Supreme Desirelessness (Ref: tatparam puruShakhyaateH-guNa-vaitriShNyam. Yoga 1.18), then on cessation of the succession of changes of Qualities and fulfillment of objects of mind, Soul will achieve salvation (Ref: tataH kritaarthaanaam pariNaama-krama-samaaptiH-guNaanaam. Yoga 4.32).
For discriminative knowledge, it means perception = having the knowledge of objects; retention = having the memory of objects known; judgment = having the logic for specific characteristics of objects; rejection = removing the unreal knowledge by real knowledge; knowledge of realities = obtaining the real knowledge of objects by cognizance; distinction of unrealities = deciding the acceptability on the basis of knowledge of realities; exist in the mind alone but their existence is fastened to the Soul. Because these become operative in mind due to the existence of the Soul, the Soul being benefitted by their fruits i.e., the real knowledge, and salvation is being achieved by the Soul alone, these means are said to be of Soul only. On the other hand, the mind being inanimate cannot make use of these for itself.

१. ये तीनों गुण परस्पर एक दूसरे के साथ मिलकर, विभाग = अंश वाले होकर विभिन्न प्रकार के परिणामों = विकारों को प्राप्त होते हैं;
२. तीनों गुण संयोग और विभाग धर्मों से युक्त हैं। अर्थात् संयोग को प्राप्त होने पर पदार्थों का निर्माण तथा विभाग को प्राप्त होने पर निर्मित पदार्थों का नाश होता है;
३. तीनों गुण एक दूसरे के आश्रय से — विभिन्न अनुपातों में मिलकर मूर्त द्रव्यों के रूप में बनते हैं अर्थात् स्थूलता के विभिन्न स्तरों को प्राप्त होते हैं, जिसमें स्थूलता का अन्तिम स्तर पृथिवी है;
४. ये गुण विभिन्न पदार्थों = विकारों में गौण अथवा प्रधान रूप से एकत्र हो कर रहते हैं; जिसमें एक गुण प्रधान रहता तथा शेष दो गुण गौण रहते हैं। परन्तु इस रूप में रहकर भी अपने स्वभाव एवम् सामर्थ्य को अलग-अलग बनाए रखते हैं, अर्थात् गौण रूप से उपस्थित गुणों का सामर्थ्य समाप्त नहीं होता;
५. ये गुण समानजातीय = सजातीय तथा असमानजातीय = विजातीय पदार्थों में शक्ति रूप से विद्यमान रहते हैं = प्राप्त होते हैं;
६. जिस पदार्थ में जो गुण प्रधान होता है, उस पदार्थ में ये अपना स्वरूप = स्वभाव मुख्य रूप से प्रकट करता है। यथा बुद्धि में सत्त्वगुण प्रधान रहता, अतः यही प्रकाश = ज्ञान कराने का साधन बनती है;
७. जहाँ जो गुण गौण रूप से रहते हैं, वे प्रधान गुण की सत्ता में व्यापार मात्र से = क्रियामात्र से = अपने स्वरूप मात्र से उपस्थित रहते और विभिन्न कार्यों में अनुमान से ही अपनी सत्ता को बताते हैं;
८. पुरुष के लिए भोग और अपवर्ग रूपी प्रयोजनों को सिद्ध करने वाले होने से ही, अपने स्वरूप का प्रयोग करने वाले है, अर्थात् पुरुष के भोग और अपवर्ग हेतु ही कार्य जगत् का निर्माण होता है;
