Meaning In English : (tatra) Out of the four stages (bhuutaani) the gross elements = objects known as (aakaasha-vaayu-agni-udaka-bhuumayaH) Ether = sky (= aakaasha), air = invisible gas (= vaayu), fire = steam = invisible gas (= agni), water = liquid (= udaka), earth = solid (= prithavi) are (visheShaaH) the specialized modifications = works (avisheShaaNaam) of the unspecialized (shabda-sparsha-ruupa-rasa-gandha-tanmaatraaNaam) subtle elements known as soniferous, tangiferous, luminiferous, gustiferous and odoriferous.
(tathaa) Similarly (buddhi-indriyaaNi) the powers of sensation i.e., (shrotra-tvak-chakShuH-jihvaa-ghraaNaani) power of hearing, touch, sight, taste, and smell; and (karma-indriyaaNi) powers of action i.e., (vaak-paaNi-paada-paayu-upasthaani) power of speech, grasp, position, execution, and generation; and (ekaadasham manaH) the eleventh power of manas = mind (= power of collecting and discharging, implementing knowledge, information) which (sarvaartham iti) maintain contact with the powers of sensation and as well as with the powers of action; (etaani) these eleven (visheShaaH) are the specialized modifications = works (asmitaa-lakShaNasya avisheShasya) of the unspecialized element known as an element of Egoism. (eShaH) These (ShodashakaH) sixteen are (visheSha-pariNaamaH) the specialized modifications = works (guNaanaam) of the "Qualities".
(Shad avisheShaaH) There are six unspecialized modifications = works of the "Qualities". (tadyathaa) These are (shabda-tanmaatram) the soniferous, (sparsha-tanmaatram) the tangiferous, (ruupa-tanmaatram) the luminiferous, (rasa-tanmaatram) the gustiferous, (cha) and (gandha-tanmaatram iti) the odoriferous subtle elements. (pa~ncha avisheShaaH) These five unspecialized modifications, (shabdaadayaH) the soniferous, etc. (eka-dvi-tri-chatuSh-pa~ncha-lakShaNaaH) possess respectively one, two, three, four, and five properties of sound, etc. (cha) and (ShaShThaH) the sixth (avisheShaH) unspecialized modification of the "Qualities" is (asmitaamaatraH iti) the elements of pure Egoism. (ete) These (Shad) six are the (avisheSha-pariNaamaaH) unspecialized modifications (sattamaatrasya aatmanaH mahataH) of Pure Be-ness, the Great Principle (= the intellect) which is a subtler modified element. And (yat) which is (param) more subtle than (avisheShabhyaH) the six unspecialized elements, (tat) that is (mahattattvam) the Great Principle (= the intellect) (li~Nga-maatram) is called as Undifferentiated Phenomenal stage. (tasmin) In the (sattamaatre mahati aatmani) Great Principle of Pure Be-ness (ete) these six unspecialized elements (avasthaaya) exist and (vivriddhi-kaaShThaam anubhavanti) grow up to their highest capacity.
At the time of destruction — (cha) and these six unspecialized modifications (prati-samsrijyamaanaaH) by merging into their respective causes (avasthaaya) pass back into (tasmin eva) that (sattaamaatre mahati aatmani) state of Pure Be-ness = the Great Principle; and thence they (tat pratiyanti) pass into the state of Noumenal (pradhaanam) the Matter = the equilibrium state of "Qualities" (yat tat) which is (niH-sattaasattam) devoid of existence and non-existence, and (niH-sadasat) not a modification of any other object and not non-existence i.e., which is the subtlest element not available through sense-organs; but (nirasat) have existence i.e., is real, and (avyaktam) non-manifested, (ali~Ngam) different from the Great Principle = the Pure Be-ness. (eShaH) This, the element of Pure Be-ness, (li~NgamaatraH) the Undifferentiated Phenomenal, is (pariNaamaH) the modification (teShaam) of the "Qualities". (cha) And the material cause of this is (ali~Nga-pariNaamah) the state of Noumenal = the Matter = the equilibrium state of "Qualities" which is (niH-sattaasattam iti) neither manifested nor non-manifested.
(puruShaarthaH) The objects = purposes of Soul (na) are not (hetuH) the cause of (ali~Nga-avasthaayaam) the state of Noumenal = the Matter. That is to say — (puruShaarthataa) the fulfillment of the objects = purposes of the Soul (na) do not (bhavati) become (kaaraNam) cause for (aadau) creation of (ali~Nga-avasthaayaam) Noumenal state (iti) So, (puruShaarthataa) the objects = purposes of the Soul (kaaraNam na bhavati) are not the cause for (tasyaaH) the Matter. Since (asau) the Matter = the Noumenal state (na puruShaartha-kritaa) is not brought into existence for the objects of the Souls, (iti) So, (aakhyaayate) is said to be (nityaa) eternal.
(tu) As to the (trayaaNaam avasthaa-visheShaaNaam) other three states i.e., specialized, unspecialized, and undifferentiated phenomenal states (puruShaarthataa) the objects of the Soul (bhavati) become (kaaraNam) the cause for (aadau) their beginning. (cha) And (hetuH) the cause i.e., (saH arthaH) that object (of the Soul) (bhavati) becomes (nimittam kaaraNam) an efficient cause, (iti) So, these three states (aakhyaayate) are said as (anityaa) non-eternal.
(guNaaH tu) The "Qualities", however, (sarva-dharma-anupaatinaH) follow up = remain present in all these states = characteristics, these (na pratyastamayante) neither disappear (na upajaayante) nor born at each state. However, these (pratyavabhaasante) appear, (upajananaapaaya-dharmakaa iva) as it were possessed of the characteristics of birth (= creation) and death (= destruction), (vyaktibhiH eva) by the manifestation into different states (i.e., from the state of Pure Be-ness to the grossest objects) (atiita-anaagata-vyayaagamavatiibhiH) in the past, future and present forms, increases and decreases position (guNa-anvayiniibhiH) by their individual phenomena in which they are present. (yathaa) As when we say (devadattaH) "Devadatta (daridraati) is becoming poor". (kasmaat) Why? (yataH) Because (asya) his (gaavaH) cows (mriyante iti) are dying. Here (maraNaat) by the death of (gavaam eva) cows only (tasya) his (daridraaNam) poverty is said, and (na svaruupahaanaat) not by the destruction of his own substance. (iti) In the same way, with regard to Qualities also it is (samaH samaadhiH) an analogous conception.
Now modification sequence of the three states is explained — (li~Nga-maatram) The Undifferentiated Phenomenal is (pratyaasannam) the first identifiable modification (ali~Ngasya) of the Noumenal. (tatra) In the Matter, (tat) the Great Principle = Pure Be-ness (= Mahattattva) (samsriShTam) existing in it as undivided, (vivichyate) is distinguished from that. How? (krama-anati-vritteH) Because the law of order of appearance is inevitable (i.e., the law of appearance cannot be violated). (tathaa) Similarly, (Shad avisheShaaH) the six unspecialized modifications (samsriShTaaH) having their existence (li~Nga-maatre) in the Undifferentiated Phenomenal (vivichyante) is distinguished from that (pariNaama-krama-niyamaat) by the rule of material cause (= by the order of evolution). (tathaa) Similarly, (bhuuta-indriyaaNi) the gross objects and powers of sensation and action (samsriShTaani) having their existence (teShu avishesheShu) in these unspecialized modifications (vivichyante) are distinguished from that. How?
(tathaa cha uktam purastaat) As per the rule of modification that is previously said i.e., by the rule of order of evolution. (tattvaantaram na asti) There is no material modification (param) after (visheShebhyaH iti) the specialized modifications, So, (visheShaaNaam) these sixteen specialized modifications (na asti) have no (tattvaantara-pariNaamaH) material modification. (teShaam tu) However, these elements and organ powers (of sensation and action) have (dharma-lakShaNa-avasthaa-pariNaamaH) characteristics, secondary quality, and condition modifications, (vyaakhyaayiShyante) which will be explained in aphorism 3.13.
Vedic Commentary in English : The knowable is Matter (= equilibrium state of Qualities) and its objects, and by getting conjunct with it, the Soul experiences various types of pleasure and pains; is of the form of objects and organs and serves the purposes of experience and salvation of the Soul. Now, what are the stages of Qualities? This is explained in this aphorism. Seer Patanjali had described four stages namely the specialized, the unspecialized, the undifferentiated phenomenal, and the Noumenal. Seer Vyaasa while starting from the gross level explained the stages as follows—
1. The Specialized Stage:- The ultimate gross objects, in the creation process, of the Qualities, are called a specialized stage. These are 16 in number which includes 5 gross objects namely sky, air, fire, water, and earth which are the products of unspecialized objects namely soniferous ether, tangiferous ether, luminiferous ether, gustiferous ether, and odoriferous ether respectively; and 11 organs which are 5 sense organs namely power of hearing, touch, sight, taste, and smell; 5 work organs namely power of speech, grasp, position, execution, and generation; and 11th is the mind which remains in contact with both the sense and work organs. These 11 organs are the products of unspecialized objects known as the element of Egoism (= conception of individuality). In this way, these 16 objects are known as Specialized. There are no further products from these objects i.e., there is no material transformation, in other words, these 16 objects do not become the material cause of production for other material objects. So, these 16 objects, being the last ones in the transformation line, are gross at their respective level. On the other hand, there are characteristics, secondary-quality, and condition changes in these objects and organs, which will be explained in aphorism 3.13. On account of these characteristics, secondary quality and condition change this visible universe become available in various forms. These 16 objects are also known as specialized since the gross properties of Qualities (=calmness, thickness, stupidity, etc.) are specifically manifested in these gross objects = organs.
2. The Unspecialized Stage:- There are 6 unspecialized products of the Qualities, which are known as 5 subtle elements and 6th is the element of pure Egoism. The quality of 5 subtle elements is explained as follows — soniferous ether possesses one property of sound; tangiferous ether possesses two properties namely sound and touch; luminiferous ether possesses three properties namely sound, touch, and color; gustiferous ether possesses four properties namely sound, touch, color, and taste; and odoriferous ether possesses five properties namely sound, touch, color, taste, and smell.
These six products = works are called unspecialized since the gross properties of Qualities do not get manifested in these six objects. These six are the material cause of the next 16 gross objects and are work products from their previous objects as per the rule of material cause. These are more subtle than their work objects ( = the 16 specialized objects) and are gross as compared to their material causes.
3. The Undifferentiated Phenomenal:- The subtlest product of Qualities of Illumination etc. is the element of Pure Be-ness ( = the intellect = called "mahattattva" in the Sanskrit Language) and this is called an Undifferentiated Phenomenal. This is the first product = work of the Matter and this is called "phenomenal objective existence" and the "Great Principal Object". It is subtler than all its products = works. Hence it is subtlest than any other work product.
4. The Noumenal Stage:- The equilibrium state of Qualities of Illumination etc., which is known as Matter, is called as "Noumenal Stage". This stage is said as "Nih-sattaasattam" i.e., is devoid of existence and non-existence. It means that is stage is devoid of existence and non-existence. Here the meaning of existence is manifestation; and the meaning of non-existence is clear. So, the Matter is devoid of manifestation and non-existence. It is not manifested in the same way as its products get manifested, and it is not non-existent i.e., it is an existing object. It is also said as "niH-sat-asat" which means that it is not a modification of any other object and is not non-existence. This property more clearly explains the earlier property. It means that this stage is not a modification of any other object i.e., it has no material cause, but it is the material cause of this universe = creation; and this object is not non-existent i.e., it is an existent object which is the most subtle object which cannot be grasped by the organs. So, Matter is an existent object which is the material cause of this universe.
These four stages are explained starting from the grossest stage to the subtlest stage since the yogi has to obtain the knowledge of available gross objects before cognizance of himself. The 6 unspecialized objects are inferred from these 16 specialized objects. In the same way, these 6 unspecialized objects give the inference of their causes and the Pure-Beness object (= "mahattattva"), the first modification of Matter. In the same way, the Pure-Beness object also gives the inference of its material cause "Matter".
Out of the four stages, the Noumenal Stage = Matter is said as eternal, since it has no cause. "Knowable" is for the purpose of experience and salvation of the Soul. But the Noumenal stage is not created for Soul i.e., the purposes of Soul do not become the cause of the creation of Matter. So, this stage is said as eternal for not having any cause for it. The purpose of the Soul becomes the instrumental cause of creation = manifestation of the other three stages. It means that all the modifications of Matter, are brought into existence by the GOD, who is an instrumental cause, for the experience and salvation of Souls. So, these three stages, being the work products of Matter, are said as non-eternal. Though the purpose of experience and salvation of Souls, is the cause of the creation of the universe from Matter and holocaust, the main instrumental cause of such creation and holocaust is GOD. There are two reasons for this fact, one is that Matter, being an inanimate object, does not have any power of creation in itself, and the second is that the Souls (individually or in a group), not being omniscient i.e., having limited knowledge, do not have the capacity and knowledge of creation and holocaust. These views had already been described by Seer Vyaasa in aphorism 1.24.
In these products i.e., in the Undifferentiated Phenomenal, Unspecialized, and Specialized stages of modifications, the Qualities of Illumination, etc. do not get produced but remain present in those modifications. By the creation and destruction of objects in these stages the production and destruction of Qualities of Illumination etc. is considered; whereas in fact these Qualities never get produced or destructed. In this regard, in an example, the poorness of Devadatta is said on account of the death of his cows, not on account of the destruction of his own substance. In the same way with the increase of cows, the flourishment of Devadatta is said; not on account of any increase in his substance. This same conception can also be understood in the case of Qualities.
Query:— It appears from the commentary on this aphorism that the object Pure-Beness (= Mahattattva) is the material cause of five subtle elements and Egoism. Whereas in the commentary of aphorism 1.45 Seer Vyaasa had clearly said that Egoism is the material cause of 5 subtle elements and the material cause of Egoism is Pure-Beness. (Ref - "teShaam-aha~NkaaraH. tasyaapi li~Ngamaatram suukShmo viShayaH". (Vyaasa 1.45)) Similarly, SeerKapila in the aphorism of Saankhya Philosophy said that Egoism is the material cause of subtle elements and organs. (Ref - "ekadasha pa~nchatanmaatram tatkaaryam" (Saankhya 2.17); "sattvarajastamsaam saamyavasthaa prakritiH prakriteH-mahaan mahato.aha.nkaaro.aha.nkaaraat pa~ncha-tanmaatraaNi-ubhayam-indriyam tanmaatrebhyaH sthuulabhuutaani puruShaH iti pa~ncha-vi.nshatiH-gaNaH." (Saankhya 1.61)). So, there seems to be some contradiction.
Answer:— In fact, this is a description of the four stages of Qualities of Illumination, etc., not the rule of creation. Those products = modifications are said as Specialized where the Qualities of Illumination, etc. get manifested specifically; and where these do not get manifested specifically, those products = modifications are said as Unspecialized one. For the rule of cause and work, the sequence of Saankhya 1.61 and Yoga 1.45 is principally correct. If various modifications had been described as per the rule of cause-work, then it would have been mere repetition. So, Seer Vyaasa had briefly mentioned the "rule of creation" for various modifications of the Matter, which means all these products come into manifestation = existence as per the "rule of creation = rule of cause-work" only. If this is not accepted then there should have been one more stage between the Unspecialized and the Undifferentiated Phenomenal; and all the modifications of Egoism also should have been categorized in one separate stage. But such a type of explanation was not meant here.
In this regard, the following verses of Manusmriti are to be referred to —
udbabarhaa.atmanaH-chaiva manaH sadasadaatmakam.
manasaH chaapi-aha.nkaaram-abhimantaaramiishvaram.
mahaantameva chaa.atmaanam sarvaaNi triguNaani cha.
viShayaaNaam grahiitriNi shanaiH pa~nchendriyaaNi cha.
teShaam tu avayavaan-suukShmaan ShaNNaam-api-amitaujasaam.
sanniveshyaa.atmamaatraasu sarvabhuutaani nirmame. Manu 1.14-16.
Then GOD from the Matter, which was existing in HIM, had created an object Pure-Beness (= Mahat), which exists in the form of cause and does not remain manifested in work-form; and from that Pure-Beness object, an object called Egoism which gives the indication of self (= "I am"); and from that object Egoism, all the subtle elements and all the sense and work organs which are capable of cognizing and grasping the material objects and eleventh organ named as mind (i.e., which mainly serves the Soul and is continuously active) are created in sequence. Out of those objects, from the six highly powerful objects i.e., five subtle elements and egoism, HE had created five gross objects i.e., Sky, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.
From the above description, it is very clear that only subtle elements are not the material cause of the five gross objects, but elements of Egoism were also used for the creation of these gross objects. To indicate this deep conception of scriptures, Seer Vyaasa classified subtle elements and Egoism in the Unspecialized stage and mentioned their creation after the Undifferentiated Phenomenal stage.
So, while explaining the creation process of objects of the Unspecialized Stage, he clearly mentioned the "Rule of Creation" for these objects, which clearly means that all these objects get created as the rule of creation = cause-work rule, not otherwise.
In this way knowledge of knowable = Matter is helpful to understand the form of the Soul, who is a conscious object, that is entirely distinct from the modifications = products, and stages of Qualities of Illumination, etc., and for whose purpose of experience and salvation, this Matter is made available in various forms = modifications. Now Seer Patanjali is explaining the nature and form of Knower = Soul in the next aphorism.
