Sutra in English : avidyaa.asmitaaraagadveShaabhiniveshaaH pa~ncha kleshaaH.3.
Meaning in English : (pa~ncha kleshaaH) The five afflictions are (avidyaa-asmitaa-raaga-dveSha-abhiniveshaaH) Nescience, Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : By restraint of modifications of the mind and adopting the means of salvation, afflictions get destroyed. These afflictions are - Nescience, Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Emancipation)
Nescience has already been described, Egoism is not to understand intellect = mind different from Soul, Attachment is a love for pleasure, Aversion is disliking of pain, and all living beings have continually the desire to live forever and do not wish to die, this is Fear of Death. Everybody should free himself from these five afflictions by means of the practice of Yoga, in order to realize the GOD and enjoy the bliss of emancipation. (Light of Truth - Chapter 9)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : kleshaa iti pa~ncha viparyayaa ityarthaH. te syandamaanaa guNaadhikaaram dRRiDhayanti, pariNaamamavasthaapayanti, kaaryakaaraNasrota unnamayanti, parasparaanugrahatantriibhuutvaa karmavipaakam chaabhinirharantiiti.
Meaning In English : (arthaH) This means that (kleshaaH iti) afflictions are (pa~ncha viparyayaaH iti) five forms of unreal cognition. (te) They, (syandamaanaaH) on becoming the modification of mind, (driDhayanti) firm the (guNa-adhikaaram) the rules of "Qualities" (of Matter); (avasthaapayanti) establish the (pariNaamam) working of Matter i.e., "Qualities"; (unnamayanti) increase the (kaarya-kaaraNa-srotaH) stream of cause and effect i.e., keep moving the creation process of Matter; (cha) and (abhinirharanti) bring about (karmavipaakam) the fructification of Actions; (paraspara-anugrahatantriibhuutvaa iti) by coming to depend upon one another (i.e., Acts and Afflictions) for mutual support.
Vedic Commentary in English : The afflictions which are to be attenuated are five in number namely Nescience, Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death. Affliction is unreal cognition, So, this nescience and others are wrong knowledge. Nescience and others are defined in the coming aphorisms.
The Nescience is termed as indiscretion by SeerKapila in Saankhya Philosophy i.e., not having the discriminative knowledge of Soul and Matter. Because of this indiscretion only, the Soul gets conjunct with the Matter, gets involved in the life-death cycle in this world, goes in various life-states, and experiences various types of pains in such life-states as per his vehicle of actions. SeerKapila had declared indiscretion as the cause of bondage (bandho viparyayaat. Saankhya 3.24). Similarly, SeerGautama had also declared wrong knowledge as the cause of pain by "duHkha-janma-pravirtti-doSha-mithyaaGYaanaanaam-uttrottraa.apaaye tadanantaaapaayaat-apavargaH" (Nyaaya 1.1.2) i.e., defects of Aversion and Attachments are born from wrong knowledge, a tendency towards good-evil acts takes place on account of defects, the life-death cycle takes place on account tendency as above, and one experience pain from the continuation of life-cycle. So, on cessation of wrong knowledge defects, tendency and life-cycle also cease to exist and thereby cessation of pains take place for the Soul.
The same fact had been declared in Yoga philosophy also - "driShTri-drishyayoH sa.nyogo heyahetuH" (Yoga 2.17) i.e., the cause of pain is the conjunction of Soul and Matter; and "tasya hetuH-avidyaa" (Yoga 2.24) i.e., the cause of such conjunction is Nescience.
On having the existence of Nescience in life i.e., till the Nescience and others remain as part of modifications of the mind, then there are four types of results —
1. By Nescience the rules of Qualities are firmed. These afflictions keep the mind providing experience and salvation to the Soul with more firmness.
2. The afflictions establish the working of Matter = Qualities, i.e., the creation process of various objects from the Matter remains continuing. It means till the Nescience remains conjunct with the Souls, till then the creation process of Matter will continue to exist.
3. Nescience increases the stream of cause and effect, i.e., keeps moving the creation process of the Matter i.e., production stream, in the form of cause and effect, of various objects like - conception of Pure be-ness from Matter, Egoism from Pure-beness, subtle elements and organs from Egoism, and gross objects from subtle elements will continue to be created.
4. Afflictions and Acts of human beings, by becoming a supporter of each other will provide fruits of acts i.e., life-state, lifetime, and experience to the Soul.
From the above, it is very clear that on account of Nescience only, the Soul gets conjunct with the Matter and as a result experiences pain by moving in the life-death cycle in this world. Products of inanimate object = Matter becomes the parts of gross and subtle bodies for the Soul and remains attached to him till salvation, keeps him moving in various life-states, and provides him experience of pain and pleasure during such life-states. Till the Soul does not make these afflictions like the burnt-up seeds by the fire of Highest Intellection, this process of life-cycle continues for him. Hence one should perform Yoga of Action with full strength to weaken the afflictions.
