Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 21
In English:
Component Word : tad artha eva dRRishyasya aatmaa.
Sutra in English : tadartha eva dRRishyasyaatmaa.21.
Meaning in English : (drishyasya-aatmaa) The being = existence of Matter and its objects is (eva) only (tadartha) for the purpose of the Soul.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : dRRishiruupasya puruShasya karmaruupataamaapannam dRRishyamiti tadartha eva dRRishyasyaatmaa bhavati.
Meaning In English : (drishyam) The Matter and its objects (aapannam) come out = take form (drishiruupasya puruShasya karmaruupataam iti) for the acts of the knower i.e., the Soul; So, (drishyasya) the objects of the Matter (aatma bhavati) are manifested = take forms (tadartha) for the purpose of Soul (eva) only.
Vedic Commentary in English : The universe is created by the GOD, from Matter, for the purposes of experience and salvation of Souls. The manifestation of form the Matter is for the purpose of others. All types of products = modifications, in the universe, are made from the various types of combinations of Qualities; and the products = modifications, made by combination, are for the purpose of others. That combined product, being inanimate, is not capable of taking such form by itself. There must be a conscious and independent object in order to combine inanimate Qualities in various combinations. Hence all the modifications of Matter come into manifestation by the Supreme Lord GOD, who acts as an instrumental cause.
GOD being the Almighty, full of bliss and enjoyment, there is no possibility of any purpose of experience and salvation in HIM. So, the other conscious object is the Soul, who is indefinite in number, is that other object, whose purposes of experience and salvation are to be served. For this reason, Seer Patanjali is declaring that Matter is not the enjoyer of itself, but the Soul who is its viewer, and is its enjoyer. Those, who believe that pleasure and pains are in mind, and Soul (being pure and devoid of any contact) is only the viewer of pleasure and pains, and do not accept him as an experiencer of pleasure and pain, are in illusion. In fact, the mind being inanimate and modification of Matter serves the purposes of experience and salvation of the Soul only; it has no purpose of experience and salvation as such.
So, the purposes of experience and salvation apply to the Soul only.
