Meaning In English : (puruShaH svaamii) The Soul = the owner is (sa.nyuktaH) conjoined to (drishyena svena) the Matter and its objects which can be owned (darshanaartham) for the purpose of knowing; and (yaaH) whatever (uplabdhiH) knowledge = cognition of (drishyasya) the knowable = the nature and form of Matter and its objects, is achieved (tasmaat sa.nyogaat) from that conjunction, (saH) that is (bhogaH) enjoyment = experience of the Soul. (yaa tu) On the other hand, when (uplabdhiH) the knowledge = cognition of (svaruupaH) the nature of (draShTuH) the knower = the Soul, is achieved (saH) that is (apavargaH) salvation of the Soul. (sa.nyogaH) The conjunction of the Soul and the Matter (darshana-kaarya-avasaanaH) remains till the achievement of true knowledge, (iti) So, (darshanam) knowledge = the discriminative knowledge (uktam) is called (kaaraNam) as a cause of (viyogasya) separation of Soul and Matter. (darshanam) The discriminative knowledge is (pratidvandvii) contradictory of (adarshanasya) ignorance = Nescience. (iti) So, (adarshanam) Nescience (uktam) is said to be (sa.nyoga-nimittam) the cause of the conjunction of the Soul and Matter. (atra) Here (darshanam) the discriminative knowledge is (na) not (mokSha-kaaraNam) the cause of salvation, but (adarshana-abhaavaat eva) by the absence of Nescience alone which results in (bandha-abhaavaH) absence of bondage; (saH) that is (mokShaH iti) the salvation of the Soul. (darshanasya bhaave) On achieving the discriminative knowledge (adarshanasya) the Nescience, (bandhakaaraNasya) which is the cause of bondage, (naashaH) is removed; (iti-ataH) it is for this reason (darshanam j~naanam) the discriminative knowledge (uktam) is said to be (kaivalya-kaaraNam) the cause of complete freedom = salvation.
(cha) And now (kim) what is (idam) this (adarshanam naama) ignorance = Nescience = absence of knowledge?
(1) (kim) Is it (adhikaaraN) function = working capacity to produce various objects i.e., mind, etc. (guNaanaam) of the Qualities?
(2) (aahosvit) Or is it (anutpaadaH) non-reproduction of (pradhaana-chittasya) the mind (darshita-viShayasya) which shows all the objects (drishiruupasya svaaminaH) to the power of knower = the Soul, i.e., (yaH darshana-abhaavaH) the absence of the true knowledge even though (svasmin drishye) the objects which are knowable (vidyamaane) are present, is Nescience?
(3) (kim) Is (arthavattaa) purposefulness (= i.e., providing the experience and salvation for the Souls) (guNaanaam) of the Qualities, known as Nescience?
(4) (atha) Or (avidyaa) is it Nescience which (at the time of holocaust) (niruddhaaH) passes into the state of latency (svachittena saha) along with its own mind = mental state, and (at the time of creation) (utpattibiijam) become the seed for creation (svachittasya) of the mind appropriate to its own manifestation?
(5) (kim) Is it (gati-sa.nskaara-abhivyaktiH) manifestation of the potency of motion (= i.e., to create the motions in the Qualities which are in the state of equilibrium) when (sthiti-sa.nskaara-kShaye) the potency of rest = equilibrium becomes week i.e., comes to end. (idam uktam) It has been said (yatra) on the subject that (pradhaanam) if the Matter, the material cause of the creation, (varttamaanam) remains (sthityaa eva) in the state of equilibrium only, then (vikaara-akaraNaat) on not becoming the cause of any material objects, (= not manifesting any phenomena) (apradhaanam syaat) it will not be known as Matter, (tathaa) in the same way if (gati eva varttamaanam) the state of constant motion remains in force, then (vikaara-nityatvaat) the phenomena would become eternal = always existing in nature, (apradhaanam syaat) then it will not be called as Matter. (cha) And (pradhaana-vyavahaaram labhate) it is called Matter (asya vrittiH) when it tends to (ubhayathaa) both these states i.e., state of equilibrium and state of manifestation, (na anyathaa) not otherwise. (kaaraNa-antareShu) If other causes are (kalpiteShu) imagined (api) then also (aiShaH samaanaH) the same type of (charchaH) consideration will apply.
(6) (eke) Some intellectuals say that (darshana-shaktiH) power of knowing = the mind (eva) only (adarshanam iti) is ignorance = Nescience. (iti shruteH) As the text says (pradhaanasya pravrittiH) "The activity of the Matter (aatma-khyaapanaarthaa) is for the sake of showing itself." (puruShaH) The Soul, (sarva-bodhya-bodha-samarthaH) who is capable of knowing all the knowable objects, (na pashyati) does not see = know (praak pravritteH) before the manifestation of the Matter, and (drishyam) the creation, (sarva-kaarya-karaNa-samartham) which is capable of causing all its effects, also (na drishyate) does not become visible (tadaa iti) before the manifestation of the Matter.
(7) (eke) Others say that (adarshanam) Nescience is (dharmaH) characteristics of (ubhayasya api iti) both the Soul and the Matter. (tatra) In this regard (idam) the Nescience (of Matter) is — (darshanam) the knowledge (drishyasya) of the knowable = Matter, (svaatma-bhuutam api) though of the very nature of itself, (puruSha-pratyaya-aapekSham) but is for the knowledge of the Soul and for its achievements, (drishya-dharma-tvena bhavati) takes place as the characteristics of the Matte alone. (tathaa) Similarly, (anaatma-bhuutam api) although it is not the nature of the Soul (drishya-pratyaya-aapekSham) yet requiring the mental modification for its knowledge (avabhaasate) it appears (puruSha-dharmatvena iva) as the characteristic of the Soul alone (puruShasya adarshanam) is the Nescience of the Soul.
(8) (kechit) Someone (abhidadhati) says that (adarshanam) Nescience is (darshanam j~naanam eva iti) seeing = knowing the material knowable objects only.
(ete) These are (vikalpaaH) alternative conceptions (shaastragataaH iti) explained in various disciplines. (tatra) With regard to the Nescience, (vikalpa-bahutvam) one of the various alternative conceptions, (etat saadhaarana-viShayam) the common opinion is for (sa.nyoge) conjunction of (guNaanaam) Qualities (sarva-puruShaaNaam) with All Souls.
Vedic Commentary in English : The eternal conjunction (by flow) of Soul and Matter is the cause of pain for the Soul. Seer Patanjali said that recognition of the nature of Matter (= power of being owned) and Soul ( = power of owning) takes place in conjunction. The ‘Matter’ is said as knowable and the ‘Soul’ is the knower. Seer Vyaasa said that the Soul gets conjunct with the Matter and its objects for the purpose of knowing them. When the form of the knowable = Matter and its object is known then it is called an experience of the Soul. And during the period of conjunction when the Soul cognizes his own form and exists in his own form, then it is called the salvation of the Soul. In this way, Matter serves the purposes of experience and salvation to the Soul. Till the Soul remains satisfied with the knowledge of Matter and its objects and does not attain his own form, till then he continuously receives the experiences. This sequence is continuing with all the Souls in every creation since eternity. In this way, the conjunct Soul, on account of his conjunction with the Matter, remains involved in the life-cycle since eternity, receives various types of pains of consequence, anxiety, and habituation, and also because of the contrariety of the functions of "Qualities".
On the other hand, when the Soul attains the real knowledge of his form along with the knowledge of Matter, then this conjunction ceases. Since on attaining his own form, the Soul becomes free from the bonds of Matter, by the performance of Supreme Desirelessness, becomes desireless for Qualities of Illumination, etc., bringing his residual potencies in the state of burnt-up seeds in Ultra-cognitive trance, cognizing the GOD, attains salvation on death from the present body. So, discriminative knowledge = distinct knowledge of Soul and Matter by cognizance is said as a cause of the separation of Soul and Matter. Discriminative knowledge is contradictory to Nescience, and this discriminative knowledge becomes the cause of the separation of Soul and Matter; however, Nescience is the cause of their conjunction. By the discriminative knowledge the Nescience gets destroyed; in the absence of Nescience, the conjunction of Soul and Matter also gets destroyed; and on cessation of the above conjunction, the Soul who attained his own form achieves salvation. It means that removal from the bonds of Matter is the salvation of the Soul, who is pure in his form. It has to be kept in mind that till the discriminative knowledge is verbal (i.e., achieved by verbal knowledge or study of Vedic literature only), till then there will not be any achievement. By logical thinking, meditation, and cognizance of this verbal knowledge, the Soul achieves the real knowledge of Matter, self, and GOD; and on having the cognizance of GOD, he attains salvation = existence in his own form.
Nescience is said as the cause of the conjunction of the Soul with Matter and its objects. (Ref - tasya hetuH avidyaa. Yoga 2.25). The Matter remains operative, even after the salvation of one or more Souls, and keeps providing the experience and salvation to the other bonded Souls. So, the Nescience, which is eternal by flow and on account of which this creation-cycle is moving since eternity, is defined in various ways, in the scriptures, by various intellectuals. Some of those optional descriptions of Nescience are given by Seer Vyaasa as follows —
1. The existence of the working capacity of Qualities of Illumination etc. to produce various objects i.e., mind, etc. is Nescience.
2. Non-manifestation of mind which is a means of knowledge to the knower = Soul, and thereby Soul is not able to achieve discriminative knowledge, is Nescience.
3. Providing experience and salvation to the Soul, by the Qualities of Illumination, is Nescience.
4. The nescience that passed into the state of latency, at the time of the holocaust, along with the mind and again becoming the cause of manifestation of mind at the time of creation, is Nescience.
5. The manifestation of creation again, at the end of holocaust time, is the Nescience. It means that the Qualities of Illumination etc. come in the state of disequilibrium from the state of equilibrium and again coming in the state of equilibrium from the state of disequilibrium, is necessary for the creation-holocaust-cycle.
6. Some intellectuals said that the power of knowing = mind alone is Nescience since the tendency of creation is that the Souls should know it. Without that tendency, the Soul does not know this world, nor does it become knowable.
7. According to some intellectuals Nescience is the characteristics of both the knower = Soul and knowable = Matter.
8. According to some intellectuals’ knowledge of material objects alone is Nescience.
Most of the commentators had considered the fourth option as a describer of Nescience. But Seer Vyaasa said that in all the options conjunction of Qualities with the Soul is common. Seer Vyaasa had described the destroyable afflictions in aphorism 2.5-9. So, for achieving salvation it is a must for every person to understand the nature, properties, and characteristics of afflictions clearly in order to destroy these completely. Destruction of Nescience is possible by its contrary mean which is said as discriminative knowledge.
On the basis of "naatra darshanam mokShakaaraNam" in the Vyaasa commentary, in order to prove salvation as eternal, some commentators have not accepted discriminative knowledge as a direct means of salvation. Their view is that by the discriminative knowledge, Nescience gets destroyed, and on cessation of Nescience conjunction of Soul and Matter ends, and with the result, salvation is achieved automatically. As per them if salvation is accepted as achieved on account of some cause, then it will not remain eternal, So, in order to prove that salvation is eternal, they mentioned that in the absence of Nescience, bondage will not remain and this is termed as salvation. In fact, this conception is delusion only. The main cause of this delusion is that they had already considered = accepted salvation as eternal. But in the Vedic scriptures, salvation is not accepted as eternal. In this regard, we had given verbal testimony on the basis of Vedic scriptures in Aphorism 1.24. Seer Vyaasa had clearly said that the cause of the conjunction of Soul and Matter is Nescience. When the conjunction is on account of cause, then how can their removal = dis-conjunction be without cause? This fact is further described by Seer Vyaasa by saying - "darshansya bhaave bandhakaaraNasya-adarshanasya naasha iti-ataH darshanam GYaanam kaivalya-kaaraNam uktam" i.e., by discriminative knowledge, Nescience which is a cause of bondage gets destroyed; So, discriminative knowledge is said as a cause of salvation.
In the same way Seer Vyaasa said in 2.15 that — "sa.nyogasya.atyantikii nivrittiH-haanam. haanopaayaH samyag-darshanam." i.e., the ultimate removal of the conjunction of the Soul and the Matter is salvation. And the real cognition (= the discriminating knowledge) of material objects and the Soul is the cause of salvation. In the same way, Seer Patanjali also says that discriminative knowledge is the cause of salvation. (Ref - Vivekakhyaatih-aviplavaa haanopaayah. (Yoga 2.26)).
In the same way, SeerKapila also said in Saankhya-aphorisms - "GYaanaat muktiH" (Saankhaya Philosophy 3.23) i.e., salvation takes place by real knowledge. On the basis of the above testimonies, salvation takes place on account of real cognition of Soul and Matter and hence is with reason. After the salvation period, the Soul again comes in the life-death cycle as per the fruition system of GOD, and takes the life-state of a man, in order to get the fruits of his un-fruited vehicle of actions which was brought into the state of burnt-up seeds at that time i.e., before the salvation.
