Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 25
In English:
Component Word : tat abhaavaat sa.myogaabhaavaH haanam tat dRRisheH kaivalyam.
Preface to Sutra in English : heyam duHkham. heyakaaraNam cha sa.myogaakhyam sanimittamuktam. ataH param haanam vaktavyam —
Meaning in English : (heyam duHkham) The pain which can be received in the future is avoidable; (cha) and (heya-kaaraNam) the cause of such pain, which is (sa.nyogaakhyam) conjunction of Soul and Matter, (uktam) is explained (sanimittam) together with its reasons. (ataH param) And now (haanam) removal of pain (vaktavyam) is explained —
Sutra in English : tadabhaavaatsa.myogaabhaavo haana.m taddRRisheH kaivalyam.25.
Meaning in English : (haanam) Removal of pain is (sa.nyoga-abhaavaH) non-existence of conjunction of Soul and Matter. (tad-abhaavaat) On account of the non-existence of Nescience, (tad) the state achieved is (kaivalyam) the absolute freedom = salvation (drisheH) of the Soul.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : When afflictions of nescience etc. get destroyed and auspicious qualities of real knowledge are achieved, then the Soul achieves salvation by getting free from all bondages and pains.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : tasyaadarshanasyaabhaavaad buddhipuruShasa.myogaabhaava aatyantiko bandhanoparama ityarthaH. etaddhaanam. taddRRisheH kaivalyam puruShasyaamishriibhaavaH punarasa.myogo guNairityarthaH. duHkhakaaraNanivRRittau duHkhoparamo haanam. tadaa svaruupapratiShThaH puruSha ityuktam.
Meaning In English : (abhaavaat) By disappearance - removal of (tasya adarshanasya) that Nescience (buddhi-puruSha-sa.nyoga-abhaavaH) the conjunction of Soul and mind also comes to an end (arthaH) which means that (bandhano-paramaH) bondage is removed (aatyantikaH iti) completely. (etat) This is (haanam) called salvation. (tat) The removal of pain is (kaivalyam) salvation (drisheH) of the Soul; (iti arthaH) it means that (puruShasya amishriibhaavaH) the Soul does not get mixed up with the mind etc. and (asa.nyogaH) not being conjoined with (guNaiH) the "Qualities" (punaH) again. (duHkha-kaaraNa-nivrittau) On removal of causes of the pain (duHkhoparamaH) removal of pain takes place which is called (haanam) salvation. (uktam) It is said that (tadaa) then (puruShaH) the Soul (svaruupa-pratiShThaH iti) rests = establishes in his own nature/form.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali while defining the state of salvation for the Soul, said that by the removal of Nescience, which is the cause of the conjunction of Soul and Matter, there is removal of all types of pains for the Soul, appearing on account of his conjunction with the Matter and its objects; and this is the salvation of the Soul. This conception is also explained by other seers. SeerGautama said in Nyaaya Philosophy —
duHkha-janma-pravirtti-doSha-mithyaaGYaanaanaam-uttrottraa.apaaye tadanantaaapaayaat-apavargaH. nyaaya Philosophy 1.1.2.
From the pain, birth, modification, defects, and nescience, with the removal of the next one, its previous one is removed and ultimately the pain is removed in the end. It means with the removal of Nescience, defects get removed; with the removal of defects, modifications get removed; with the removal of modifications, future births get removed; and with the removal of births (in the future), pains will cease to exist; and this is the salvation of the Soul. Further complete removal of pains is said as the salvation of the Soul —
baadhnaa-lakShanam duHkham. tadatyanta-vimokSho.apavargaH.
Nyaaya Aphorism 1.2.21-22.
i.e., the complete removal of pains is salvation.
While explaining Seer Vyaasa said that on the removal of Nescience = unreal cognition, the conjunction of Soul and Matter ceases to exist. On cessation of conjunction, all types of pains of the Soul end. This state of removal of pains is the state of salvation for the Soul. Further explaining this it had been said that the Soul remains away from the mind ( i.e., does not get mixed up with it) and thereby does not get conjoined with the Qualities of Illumination, etc. In this way, on achieving salvation, the Soul exists in his own form.
In the commentary to this aphorism, Seer Vyaasa had said - "aatyantiko bandhano-paramaH" which means that bondage is removed completely. On the basis of this, some of the commentators tried to prove that salvation is eternal. This means that bondage is removed forever for the Soul; and the Soul will not come in the life-cycle again after achieving salvation, i.e., after achieving salvation Soul never gets conjunct with the Matter again. In our explanation of aphorism 1.24, we had shown that salvation cannot be eternal, and there is a clear statement, in the Vedic scriptures, of taking birth after the salvation period. In the explanation to the last aphorism 2.24, we had clarified that residual potencies of Nescience again become operative, from the burnt-up state, on completion of the salvation period, with the result Soul again gets conjunct with the Matter. So, complete removal of pains means that none of the pain comes into manifestation during the period of salvation. Here word complete is attached to pains (i.e., all types of pains). So, it is not proper to understand the "complete" in the time context, on the basis of which removal of pains is considered forever. So, there is the complete removal of pains during the salvation period. On completion of the salvation period, the Soul again comes into the life-cycle on the basis of his un-fruited vehicle of actions and receives various types of pleasure and pains.
