Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 26
In English:
Component Word : vivekakhyaatiH aviplavaa haanopaayaH.
Preface to Sutra in English : atha haanasya kaH praaptyupaaya iti —
Meaning in English : (atha) Now (kaH) what is (upaayaH) a means for (praapti) attaining (haanasya iti) the state of removal of pain i.e., salvation?
Sutra in English : vivekakhyaatiraviplavaa haanopaayaH.26.
Meaning in English : (haanopaayaH) Means for removal of pain = salvation is (aviplavaa) undisturbed (vivekakhyaatiH) discriminative knowledge of the Matter, its products i.e., mind, etc., and the Soul.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : sattvapuruShaanyataapratyayo vivekakhyaatiH. saa tvanivRRittamithyaaj~naanaa plavate. yadaa mithyaaj~naanam dagdhabiijabhaavam vandhyaprasavam sampadyate tadaa vidhuutaklesharajasaH sattvasya pare vaishaaradye parasyaam vashiikaarasa.mj~naayaam varttamaanasya vivekapratyayapravaaho nirmalo bhavati. saa vivekakhyaatiraviplavaa haanopaayaH. tato mithyaaj~naanasya dagdhabiija- bhaavopagamaH punashchaaprasavaH. ityeSha mokShasya maargo haanasyopaaya iti.
Meaning In English : (vivekakhyaatiH) Discriminative knowledge is (sattvapuruSha-anyataa-pratyayaH) the recognition of the distinct nature of sattva = the Matter and its products (= mind, etc) and "puruShaH" = the Soul. (saa) This, (tu) however, (plavate) remains shaky (anivritta-mithyaaj~naanaa) as long as the false knowledge is not removed = destroyed. (yadaa) When (mithyaaj~naanam) false knowledge = Nescience (sampadyate) becomes (dagdha-biija-bhaavam) like burnt-up seeds and (vandhya-prasavam) thus becomes incapable of fruition (tadaa) then (sattvasya) the mental essence = mind, (vidhuuta-klesha-rajasaH) not having any dirt of Quality of Disturbing Energy, (pare vaishaaradye) have the state of the highest purity, and while (varttamaanasya) existing (parasyaam vashikaara-sa.nj~naayaam) in the state of supreme control on itself, (viveka-pratyaya-pravaahaH) the flow of real-cognition = discrimination (bhavati) becomes (nirmalaH) pure i.e., free from impurities. (saa) The above said pure (aviplavaa) undisturbed (viveka-khyaatiH) discriminative knowledge (haanopaayaH) is the mean of attaining "removal of pain" i.e., salvation. (tataH) By that discriminative knowledge (mithyaa-j~naanasya dagdhabiija-bhaavopagamaH) the false knowledge = Nescience becomes like the burnt-up seeds (cha) and it (aprasavaH) does not sprout (punaH) again i.e., becomes unproductive. (iti eSha) So, this is (maargaH) the path (mokShasya) of salvation i.e., (upaayaH) mean of (haanasya iti) removal of pain.
Vedic Commentary in English : (In order to understand the explanation of this aphorism, one must go through the explanation of 1.16 and 1.51 again before proceeding further.)
After explaining the avoidable, cause of avoidable, and removal of pain, now for telling the means for removal of pain, Seer Patanjali said that discriminative knowledge of Matter and Soul is the means to achieve salvation. To achieve this target, the discriminative knowledge should not be disturbed, i.e., it should not become shaky by the effects of afflictions of Nescience, etc. Till there is the existence of Nescience etc. in the mind and its potencies are in the dormant, tenuous, alternated, or operative state, till then the discriminative knowledge cannot be totally defect-free.
The devotee, first of all, achieves real knowledge of Matter, its objects, and the Soul, from his teachers, intellectuals, and Vedic scriptures. The knowledge obtained as such is verbal knowledge = oral cognition. This verbal knowledge does not become a means for salvation. Since at this stage, various types of modifications and their potencies exist in the mind, afflictions of Nescience, etc., in the dormant, tenuous, alternated, or operative mode, are continuously troubling/disturbing the devotee. Till this verbal knowledge does not pass from the stage of logical thinking, and meditation and is not cognized until then devotees cannot achieve any gain from such verbal knowledge. On achieving this verbal knowledge, when the devotee becomes desireless from the perceptible and scriptural enjoyments, this stage is called normal Desirelessness. (Ref - driShTaanushravik-viShaya-vitriShNasya vashiikaara-sa.nGYaa vairaagyam. Yoga 1.15). When there is a dominance of Quality of Illumination in the mind of the devotee, then cognizes the objects made from Matter starting from gross objects to subtle objects of Matter and Matter (itself) in the Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances. During this period devotee attains the real knowledge of Matter by cognizance of various objects of the Matter and Matter itself, but he does not have the real knowledge of the Soul. While moving to the higher stage, the devotee achieves the cognizance of the Soul in the Egoism Cognitive Trance by performing Sanyama on the notion of self. (Ref - svaartha-sa.nyamaat puruShaGYaanam. Yoga 3.35).
In this way by knowing the superiority of the conscious Soul over the inanimate Matter and thereby becoming desireless even towards the Qualities of Illumination etc., this stage is called Supreme Desirelessness. (Ref - tatparam puruShakhyaateH guNa-vaitriShNyam. Yoga 1.16)
In this way, the devotee, who has become desireless towards the Qualities, cognizes the real form of conscious GOD through the conscious Soul. In this stage, the afflictions, Nescience, etc., and their residual potencies become like burnt-up seeds and are not able to produce their results again.
In this way after the cognizance of the Soul only, there is an experience of supreme purity and self in the mind which became devoid of afflictions and effects of Qualities, there is a creation of such type of residual potencies of trance-cognition. (Ref - tataH samaadhijaa praGYaa, tataH praGYaakritaaH sa.nskaaraa iti navo navaH sa.nskaaraashayo jaayate. tataH cha praGYaa tataH cha sa.nskaaraaa iti. Vyaasa on 1.50). In this way by the flow of potencies of trance-cognition, there is a pure flow of discriminative knowledge that is not disturbed on account of a mixture of any type of impurity; and the discriminative knowledge born from the cognition of real form of Matter and its objects and Soul = Self and GOD, becomes the mean of salvation.
Any stage before Soul-cognition, i.e., the trance-cognition of Matter and its objects, or cognition of Self in the Egoism Cognitive Trance also, on account of the absence of Supreme Desirelessness, can be disturbed at any time. Why? Since on that stage, the afflictions become tenuous but can come in the operative mode on having some dominating cause for their operation, and thereby start functioning again. So, when the yogi brings the afflictions and their potencies in the burnt-up state by the Supreme Desirelessness after the Soul-cognition, then the discriminative knowledge is called pure and undisturbed and this discriminative knowledge alone is the means of salvation.
