| Sutra No : 27
In English:
Component Word : tasya saptadhaa praantabhuumiH praj~naa.
Sutra in English : tasya saptadhaa praantabhuumiH praj~naa.27.
Meaning in English : (tasya) He = the Yogi who has attained discriminative knowledge, (saptadhaa) has seven-fold (praanta-bhuumiH praj~naa) supreme knowledge which is final at each stage.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : tasyeti pratyuditakhyaateH pratyaamnaayaH. Saptadhetyashuddhya-avaraNamalaapagamaachchittasya pratyayaantaraanutpaade sati saptaprakaaraiva praj~naa vivekino bhavati.

Meaning In English : (tasya iti) From the word "tasya" the Yogi (pratyudita-khyaateH) who has attained discriminative knowledge (pratyaamnaayaH) is implied. (saptadhaa iti) The word "sevenfold" means that (sapta-prakaaraa) seven descriptions of (praj~naa) knowledge (eva) only (bhavati) exist (chittasya) in the mind of (vivekinaH) Yogi who has attained discriminative knowledge (ashuddhya-aavaraNa-malaapagamaat) on account of the removal of dirt which constitutes the veil of impurity and (pratyayaantara-anutpaade sati) not the generation of any knowledge other than the discrimination. (tad-yathaa) This is as follows —
1. (heyam) The pain to be removed and painful objects (parij~naatam) are fully known; and (punaH) further (asya) in this regard (na asti) nothing (parij~neyam) is knowable.
2. (heya-hetuH) The causes of the removable pain i.e., Nescience, etc. (kShiiNaaH) are destroyed like burnt-up seeds by the discriminative knowledge; (punaH) further (eteShaam) these afflictions (na asti) are not (kShetavyam) destroyable.
3. (haanam) Complete removal of pain = salvation (saakShaatkritam) has become a fact of direct cognition (nirodha-samaadhinaa) by means of Ultra-cognitive Trance.
4. (haanopaayaH) Means of removal of pain (viveka-khyaati-ruupaH) in the form of discriminative knowledge (bhaavitaH iti) is achieved.
(eShaa) This is (chatuShTayii) fourfold (vimuktiH) freedom (kaaryaa) from external phenomena = workable requirement (praj~naayaaH) of the mind = mental discrimination. (chitta-vimuktiH) Freedom from the mind (tu) itself is (trayii) threefold as follows —
5. (buddhiH) Mind by completing its duties of providing experience and salvation to the Soul (charita-adhikaaraaH) has nothing to perform.
6. (guNaaH) The "Qualities" become latent (tena saha) along with the mind into their cause i.e., the Matter (astam gachchhanti) disappear along with it (iva) as (graavaaNaH) the stones (girishikhara-taTachyutaa) rolled down from the edge of hill-top, (niravasthaanaaH) finding no support (pralaya-abhimukhaaH) tending to become latent (svakaaraNe) into its cause i.e., land. (cha) And (prayojana-abhaavaat) in the absence of purpose towards this Yogi, (eShaam) these "Qualities" (praviliinaanaam) passing into latency (na asti) do not have (utpaadaH) generation of mind, etc. (punaH iti) again.
7. (etasyaam avasthaayaam) In this state (puruShaH) the Yogi, (guNa-sambandhaatiitaH) having passed beyond the limits of the relation with the Qualities, (svaruupa-maatra-jyotiH) enlightened by its own pure nature, (amalaH) devoid of any impurity, (kevalii iti) and is free.
(puruShaH) The Yogi (anupashyan) who has seen = experienced (etaam) these (sapta-vidhaam) seven stages (praantabhuumi-praj~naam) of supreme discrimination (aakhyaayate) is called (kushalaH iti) "Adept". (pratiprasave) On resolving = passing into its cause (chittasya) of the mind (api) also, He = the Yogi, (guNaatiitatvaat) being passed beyond the sphere of the "Qualities" (bhavati) is (muktaH iti) free (kushalaH iti) and wise (eva) only.
Vedic Commentary in English : The means of salvation is said as undisturbed discriminative knowledge. On achievement of undisturbed discriminative knowledge, what is the type of mind of the Yogi? This has been explained in this aphorism. Seer Patanjali said that such yogi has seven-fold supreme knowledge. On removal of impurities of afflictions and cognizance of GOD in the Ultra-cognitive Trance, the knowledge of such Yogi is of seven kinds. Of these, four types are of freedom from external phenomena = workable requirement and three types are of freedom from internal phenomena = mind. Four types of freedom from working requirements mean that Yogi had nothing to perform with regard to any external work. There are four divisions in Yoga i.e., avoidable, cause of avoidable, removal of pains, and mean for removal of pains. The first four types of freedom are with regard to these four —
1. Avoidable = all types of avoidable pains and their causes are fully known, and nothing more is required to be known in this regard. Every Soul receives pleasure, or pain on the basis of his vehicle of actions in the fruition system of GOD; but along with these pleasures, and pains he also receives pains on account of consequence, anxiety, and habituation and also on account of contrarieties of Qualities. (Ref - pariNaama-taapa-sa.nskaara-duHkhaiH guNavritti-virodhaat cha duHkham-eva sarvam vivekinaH. Yoga 2.15). The yogi knows all types of pains and their causes, in all respects hence he comes to know all pains which can be received in the life-cycle. Normal people and other intellectuals do not have such capability. The yogi alone can have such capability since is said as an eyeball. (Ref - Vyaasa commentary on 2.16). With the knowledge of avoidable pains, the knowledge of their causes is included, since, without the knowledge of the cause, the knowledge of work cannot be said as complete. This is the first type of freedom from work.
2. I have since destroyed the causes of avoidable pains, i.e., afflictions (= Nescience, etc.) and their residual potencies, by bringing them into the state of the burnt-up seed, and hence these cannot perform their functions again. So, by the destruction of causes of pain, nothing is left as destroyable for achieving freedom from the life-cycle. This is the second type of freedom from work.
3. I have cognized and experienced the painless state of salvation, by cognizing the Soul and GOD in the Ultra-cognitive Trance. And I know that this is the best state, which can be achieved by the Soul, and nothing else can be better than this state of freedom. This is the third type of freedom from work.
4. I have achieved undisturbed discriminative knowledge which is the means of salvation. There is nothing else which is required to be achieved in this regard; and as this is the ultimate target of this life. This is the fourth type of freedom from work.
Other than the above four types of work, there is no work that remains performable for any person. So, these four types are said as freedom from workable phenomena. After this on cessation of work of the mind, there are three types of freedoms from the mind, which are as follows —
5. The purpose of providing experience and salvation to the Soul is completed for the mind. On achievement of salvation by the Soul, the mind has nothing to perform and its authority is finished. Now it has no work to perform. This is the first type of freedom from the mind.
6. On achieving undisturbed discriminative knowledge, and after the cognition of Soul, the devotee becomes desireless even towards the Qualities of Illumination, etc. In such a state, the Qualities of Illumination, etc. having performed their functions, move toward latency in the Matter along with the mind, in the same way as the stone rolled down from the edge of the hill-top, having no support, become latent in the earth by being crushed down. This is the second type of freedom from the mind.
7. In this state Yogi, being contactless with the Qualities of Illumination, etc., on the basis of omnipresent GOD in self = Soul, exists in his own pure form, devoid of any impurity, becomes pure and free from any type of relation with the Matter and its objects. This is the third type of freedom from the mind.
In this way by the experience of seven-fold stages of supreme discrimination, Yogi is said as "adept". Such yogi, becoming free from bonds of bodies, achieves salvation after the death from the present body in the fruition system of GOD. On passing of the mind into its cause = Matter, the conjunction of Matter ends for the Soul. With the latency of the mind in the Matter, the contact of subtle and caustic bodies also ends for the Soul. The Soul, resting in his own form, exists in the omnipresent GOD and remains away from all types of pains, during the salvation period.
With regard to seven-fold discrimination, it should be understood that as, and as yogi achieves a particular stage of discrimination, he reaches nearer to salvation in the same ratio. He becomes "adept" at achieving all the seven stages of discrimination, not before that.
