Sutra in English : yamaniyamaa.a.asanapraaNaayaamapratyaahaaradhaaraNaadhyaanasamaadhayo.aShTaava~Ngaani.29.
Meaning in English : (Yama-niyama-aasana-praaNaayaama-pratyaahaara-dhaaraNaa-dhyaana-samaadhayaH) Restraint, Observance, Posture, Regulation of Breath, Abstraction, Concentration, Meditation, and Trance are (aShTau) eight (a~Ngaani) accessories of yoga.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Restraint, Observance, Posture, Regulation of Breath, Abstraction, Concentration, Meditation, and Trance are the eight accessories of worship. The ultimate result of these eight accessories is Sanyama. (Rigvedaadibhashyabhuumika on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : yathaakramameShaamanuShThaanam svaruupam cha vakShyaamaH.
Meaning In English : (anuShThaanam) The practice (cha) and (svaruupam) nature (eShaam) of these accessories of yoga (vakshyaamaH) will be described (yathaakramam) in order.
Vedic Commentary in English : The mean for salvation is discriminative knowledge and the mean to attain discriminative knowledge is the practice of accessories of Yoga. The eight accessories of yoga are Restraint, Observance, Posture, Regulation of Breath, Abstraction, Concentration, Meditation, and Trance. The first five accessories (Restraint, Observance, Posture, Regulation of Breath, and Abstraction) are the external means to attain Cognitive Trance; and Concentration, Meditation, and Trance are the internal means to achieve Cognitive Trance. (Ref - trayam-antara~Ngam puurvebhyaH. Yoga 3.7). Even the three internal means of Cognitive Trance are external means for Ultra-cognitive Trance. (Ref - tadapi bahira~Ngam nibiijasya. Yoga 3.8), since the direct means to attain the Ultra-cognitive Trance is Supreme Desirelessness which is achieved, after the cognition of the Soul, by becoming even desireless towards the Qualities.
How the accessories of yoga are to be practiced? The reply to this question is that these are to be practiced for a long time (= life-long), continuously (= without interruption), and with devotion (= with faith and knowledge). (Ref - sa tu diirghakaala-nairantarya-satkaaraasevito driDhabhuumiH. Yoga 1.14)
Swami Dayanand said that the result of the performance of eight accessories is Sanyama. It has to be understood that the practice of one accessory restraint of modifications is not possible, hence the all-around performance of all these is desired. It means that with the practice of later accessories, the practice of earlier accessories is also desired. It means that at the time of practicing for Posture, the practice of Restraints and Observances is not denied, but these are also to be kept performed; in the same way during the practice of Regulation of Breath, the performance of Restraint, Observance, and Posture is also to be continued; similarly, at the time of practice of Trance, the performance of all the seven earlier accessories is required to be continued; avoidance of any of the earlier seven accessories is not desired, otherwise, the performance of Trance will not be possible. So, without the performance of earlier accessories, the practice of successive accessories will not be possible and fruitful. On reaching the higher state of performance and giving up the performance of earlier accessories, the devotee cannot move ahead on the path of Yoga. As - Is giving up the performance of Restraints and Observances, at the time of practice of Posture, desired? or, at the time of practice of Abstraction, is the performance of Restraints, Observances, Posture, and Regulation of Breath be discarded? or at the time of practice of Trance, is the performance of Restraints, etc. not necessary? Hence the practice of earlier accessories is also to be continued along with the practice of accessories of a later stage.
In the beginning, any devotee has to strictly perform the Restraints and Observances at all levels of acts i.e., mental, verbal, and physical acts. By the performance of Restraints and Observances most of the defects arising in the mind and body, on account of Nescience, etc. get destroyed. In this way by performing the other accessories along with the Restraints and Observances, the devotee reaches up to the stage of trance. And in the end by the practice of Supreme Desirelessness and with the state of total restraint of all modification, the devotee is able to achieve Ultra-cognitive Trance.
The practice of eight accessories of Yoga, as advised by Seer Patanjali, is to be understood in the following way —
1. Attainment of internal purity by the practice of non-violence and truthfulness and giving up the violence and untruthfulness, is the practice of Restraints.
2. Having external and internal purity by the performance of cleanliness, contentment, etc., and continuous practice of study and surrender to GOD is the practice of Observances.
3. Sitting in one posture for a long time without any difficulty, is the practice of Posture.
4. Controlling the mind by regulation of inspiration and expiration, is the practice of Regulation of Breath.
5. Restraining the senses from moving towards external objects, by the control of the mind, is the practice of Abstraction.
6. Fixing the modifications of the mind on the fore-part of the nose etc. or a subject, is the practice of Concentration.
7. Maintaining the one-pointedness of the subject of concentration, is the practice of Meditation.
8. Lastly having the knowledge of the object = subject (of meditation) alone in the mind, is the practice of Trance.
In this way practice of earlier accessories along with the practice of accessories of later stages, gives the desired fruits to the devotee.
