Sutra in English : ahi.msaasatyaasteyabrahmacharyaaparigrahaa yamaaH.30.
Meaning in English : (yamaaH) Restraints are (ahi.nsaa satya asteya brahmacharya aparigrahaa) non-violence, veracity, abstinence from theft, continence, and abstinence from avariciousness.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Out of the eight accessories of Yoga, restraint is the first which includes five rules — (1) Non-violence - which means the complete absence of enmity towards all living being at all times and behaving affectionately with them; (2) Veracity = truthful-ness means oneness of knowledge, in speech, action, and belief; (3) Abstinence from theft means not to wish to take any object of others without the permission of its owner; (4) Continence means to have full control of senses since childhood in order to attain knowledge and to marry between the age of 25 to 48 years, remain away from prostitute and women other than the wife, keep always studying = teaching the true knowledge after study and control the generative organs; (5) Abstinence from avariciousness means being devoid of faults of experience of objects and pride, etc. By the proper performance of these five, a seed of communion = worship is sowed.
(Rigvedaadibhashyabhuumika on Worship)
First non-violence means the absence of enmity; veracity means belief in truth, speaking the truth, and acting according to truth only; abstinence of theft means the abandonment of theft by thought, word, and deed; continence means control of sex organ; and abstinence of avariciousness means freedom from extreme covetousness and self-importance. These five restraints are to be always performed.
(Light of Truth - Chapter 3)
Always (1) adopt enmity-less-ness; (2) ever believe, speak, and act truth; (3) never take the objects of others by injustice even in wish, words or acts, and nor advice others to do so; (4) always have full control of sex organs i.e., save semen by remaining away from eight types of co-habituation and live a long life and be good to others; (5) being devoid of faults of pride, etc. and not get involved in worldly enjoyment by illusion in the wealth, etc. Always perform these five restraints.

Meaning In English : (tatra) Of these (ahi.nsaaH) non-violence is (anabhidrohaH) not causing pain, even not wishing to cause pain, and not having enmity (sarva-bhuutaanaam) towards all living beings (sarvathaa) in all ways i.e., in thoughts, words, and acts, (sarvadaa) at all times. (cha) And (yama-niyamaaH) restraints and observances (uttare) that follows (tanmuulaaH) have their origin in non-violence, (tat-siddhi-paratayaa) being the cause of accomplishment of non-violence (eva) only (pratipaadyante) they are advised (tat-pratipaadanaaya) to achieve the state of non-violence. The other restraints and observances (upaadiiyante) are performed (avadaata-ruupakaraNaaya) to make faultless and purer performance (tat) of non-violence (eva) only. (tathaa cha uktam) And So, it has been said — (yathaa yathaa) As (saH khalu ayam braahmaNaH) this braahmaNa = performer of Yoga (samaaditsate) goes on undertaking (bahuuni) many (vrataani) vows of restraints and observances, (tathaa tathaa) So, and So, he (nivarttamaanaH) by getting freed from (hi.nsaa-nidaanebhyaH) the causes of violence (pramaada-kritebhyaH) committed on account of forgetfulness, (karoti) performs (taam ahi.nsaam) the non-violence (avadaataruupaam) in the purer and faultless way (eva iti) only.
(satyam) Veracity means (vaa.ng-manase) oneness of words and thoughts and that to (yathaarthe) in accordance to the facts of a subject = object in consideration. (yathaa driShTam) As has been seen, (yathaa anumitam) as has been inferred and (yathaa shrutam) as has been heard about an object or subject, (vaak) speech (cha) and (manaH) thought (tathaa) should correspond to that. (uktaa vaak) Speech is uttered (svabodha-sa~Nkraantaye) for the purpose of transferring one's knowledge (paratra) to others, and it is said as truth (yadi saa) if it (na bhavet) is not causing (va~nchitaa) deception (vaa) or (bhraantaa) confusion (vaa) or (pratipatti-vandhyaa iti) is not meaningless or unable to convey the facts. (eShaa) This type of speech (pravrittaa) should be (sarva-bhuuta-upakaaraartham) for the well-being of all beings, and (na) not (bhuuta-upaghaataaya) for causing injury = pain to others. (yadi cha) And if (evam abhidhiiya-maanaa) above type of non-deceptive, non-confusing, and meaningful uttered speech (api) is also (bhuuta-upaghaataparaa eva syaat) for causing the non-well being, pain, etc. to the living beings, (satyam na bhavet) it should not be termed as truth, but (paapam eva bhavet) should be termed as sin only. (tena puNya-abhaasena) By the outward appearance as virtue i.e., (puNya-pratiruupakeNa) by the sin which facsimile of virtue (praapnuyaat) one gets (kaShTatamam) extreme pain only. (tasmaat) Therefore (bruuyaat) one should speak (satyam) truth (pariikShya) after examining well, (sarva-bhuutahitam) for the well-being of all the living beings.
(steyam) Theft is (sviikaraNam) taking (dravyaaNaam) things = objects = belongings (parataH) of others (ashaastra-puurvakam) against the rules of scripture and law. (punaH) And (asteyam) abstinence from theft is (tat-pratishedhaH) absence of theft i.e., (asprihaaruupam iti) not having even wish to take the objects = belongings of others.
(brahmacharyam) Continence is (sa.nyamaH) control of (guptendriyasya upasthasya) generative organ i.e., restraint of generative power.
(aparigrahaH) Abstinence of avariciousness is (asviikaraNam) non-acceptance of (vishayaaNaam) external objects for experience (arjana-rakShaNa-kShaya-sa~Nga-hi.nsaa-doSha-darshanaat iti) on seeing the defects of earning, preservation, destruction, attachment, and violence. (ete) These are (yamaaH) five restraints.
Vedic Commentary in English : The first accessory of Yoga is Restraint, which has five limbs namely non-violence, veracity, abstinence from theft, continence, and abstinence from avariciousness. "yama" (= restraint) in Sanskrit is drawn from the root "yamu uprame" which means - "the mean to control". So, the word Restraint is meant for the restraint of modifications of the mind. The first limb of Restraint is non-violence. Seer Vyaasa said that the next four Restraints i.e., veracity, abstinence from theft, continence, and abstinence from avariciousness, and five Observances are for faultless and successful performance of non-violence only i.e., are dependent on non-violence. The Restraints and Observances are for the defect-less practice of non-violence. It means that without the complete practice of the other four Restraints i.e., veracity, etc., and five Observances, the complete practice of non-violence is not possible. Since a liar, stealer and adulterer have enmity and malice in his mind and practice them in a normal way; and with regard to avariciousness, it had been clearly said in 2.15 - "naanupahatya bhuutani-upabhogaH sambhavati-iti" i.e., worldly experiences are not possible without giving pains to other living beings. In this way without adopting truthfulness etc. practice of non-violence is not possible.
Seer Vyaasa used the words "sarvathaa sarvadaa" while explaining non-violence, which means - "in all ways and at all times". So, a devotee should accept this concept of "in all ways and at all times" in the performance of other Restraints also. Only then their performance will be complete.
1. Non-violence:- Non-violence means not to have enmity in all ways i.e., in thoughts, words, and acts, at all times, towards all living beings. So, a devotee should not have enmity towards any living being in thoughts, words, and acts; he should not cause pain in any way to anybody, and even not have the wish to cause any pain to them which means that he should not cause or not even wish to cause any pain or loss to anybody on account of lust, anger, illusion, aversion, jealousy, etc. The act, first of all, starts in the mind, then comes in words, and lastly performed physically. Bhoja referred to killing other living beings as violence, which is a very narrow definition since killing other living beings for any reason (even for food) is the grossest form of violence. The three forms of violence should be understood as below —
A. Physical non-violence:- The grossest form of non-violence is performed by the body. The thought of violence in the mind alone gets manifested by words, body or both. As per SeerManu theft, violence, and adultery are physical vices (Ref - adattaanaam-upaadaanam hi.nsaa chaiva-avidhaanataH. paradaaropasevaa cha shaariiram trividham smritam. Manusmriti 12.7). These three are the form of physical violence, and the devotee performs the vow of non-violence by remaining away from these. All acts of violence are performed on account of attachment or aversion. So, the devotee should remain away from the defects of attachment and aversion in order to practice physical non-violence.
B. Verbal non-violence:- This form of non-violence is more subtle than physical non-violence and gross than mental non-violence. In the verbal form of violence, one causes pain to the other by speaking lies and harshly, thereby manifesting enmity toward others. Such a person even behaving as above, considers himself a virtuous performer and non-violent. As per SeerManu the hard words, untruth speech, back-biting, and unrelated = meaningless utterance are vices of speech (Ref - paaruShyam-anritam chaiva paishunyam chaapi sarvashaH. asambaddha-pralaapaH cha vaa.ngmayam syaat-chaturvidham. Manusmriti 12.6). These all are the form of verbal violence. So, the devotee should remain away from all these in order to perform verbal non-violence.
C Mental non-violence:- This is the subtlest form of non-violence. A devotee has to remain away from any type of thought of enmity, or aversion, causing pain to any living being. Due to the dominance of Qualities of Activity and Inertia in the mind, one tends toward mental violence. The mind of a person, involved in mental violence, cannot be stable and calm, and such a person cannot move on the path of Yoga. The practice of mental non-violence is most difficult since violence is caused by the thoughts of enmity toward others, even without using any words or performing physically, and as such, there is no need for any other means to perform such violence. So, the devotee has to understand the truth and should remain away from any type of ill thoughts, at the level of mind, towards others. As per SeerManu, the thought of theft, wrong thinking - jealousy - aversion for others, and untrue determination are vices of mind (Ref - paradravyeShu-abhidyaanam mansaaniShTa-chintanam. vitathaabhiniveshaH cha trividham karma maansam. Manusmriti 12.5). These three are the form of mental violence.
A devotee has to keep in mind that the performance of verbal vices is more than the physical vices, and the performance of mental vices is more than the verbal vices. In this way, the performance of vices, at the level of mind, is maximum in numbers. So, in order to remain away from the vices at each level, the corresponding level of effort is to be adopted.
The target for the devotee on the path of Yoga is cognizance of GOD and attainment of salvation, and for this purpose practice of non-violence is to be done at the supreme level, as had been said in various scriptures —
ahi.nsayendriyaasa.NgaiH-vaidekaiH-chaiva karmbhiH.
tapasaH-charaNaiH-chograiH saadhayantiiha tatpadam. Manusmiti 6.75.
i.e., A renouncer can only achieve salvation, in this world, by the performance of non-enmity with living beings, becoming devoid of objects of organs, acts as prescribed in Vedas, and intense purificatory acts.
Here all the means, suggested by SeerManu, are included in the Restraints and Observances.
2. Veracity = Truthfulness:- To accept an object or subject in the form as it is, and describing = saying about it in the same way to others is called truth. It means to accept the object or subject in its true form, as has been cognized through the organs, or as has been inferred, or as has been known through the verbal testimony, and should be conveyed in the same form to others. But in conveying the knowledge to others, there should not be confusion or deception and such a statement should not be meaningless, then it is called truth. Such speech should be for the well-being of others, not for causing pain, injury, or loss to others. Since such speech which causes pain or injury to others is not accepted for the well-being of others, as truth, but is said as vice. In this regard it is to be understood that nobody, even by saying the truth, can make happy all the virtuous and vicious people; but the intention behind is that factual speech should be for the well-being of living beings, nor for causing pains to others. So, the vicious person may be experiencing pain from such truth, but ultimately, he will be benefitted from such truth (if he accepts the same in the right spirit). So, the truthful person should advise the truth alone, without any attachment or aversion, with the intention of the well-being of others, not with the intention of their loss or injury. This fact is also said in Mahabhaarata as "yad-bhuutahitam-atyantam etat satyam" i.e., the result of the truth is that it causes the maximum well-being of living beings.
There is the advice of vow of truthfulness in Vedas —
agne vratapate vratam chariShyaami tachchhakeyam tanme-raadhyataam.
idam-aham-anritaat satyam-upaimi. Yajurveda 1.5.
O GOD! You are the follower and advisor of truthfulness! I also wish to accept and follow the truth, which is away from falseness, as per the advice of Vedas, perception of direct cognition, rules of creation, a company of intellectuals, purity of Soul, etc., I pray you to support me in my vow of truthfulness So, that I should be able to perform this vow throughout my life and I will perform this vow of truthfulness. (Swami Dayanand Saraswati)
In the same way, while writing the meanings of other hymns Swami Dayanand wrote-
— O people! you should receive incomparable pleasure by adopting truthfulness. (Rigveda 5.51.2)
— Those intellectuals, who are self-controlled and worship the GOD with devotion and perform as per truth in life, achieve pleasure. (Rigveda 3.62.12)
— Those who adopt the characteristics of righteousness in the form of vows of truthfulness and act accordingly, shine like the sun with the truth. (Rigveda 4.63.7)
— People should perform acts of truthfulness through their minds and organs, by adopting the truth and discarding the untruth, and achieving strength and glory by his acts. (Rigveda 1.139.2)
And if veracity is not followed, then there will be heavy losses — "One who had performed theft, adultery, spoken falsely in front of somebody, he cannot gain glory throughout his lifetime in the mind of such other person. The loss of a person who had made a false promise is incomparable with any other person... So, one should always speak the truth and take true vows only." (Light of Truth - Chapter 2)
So, whatever is as per the perceptions = testimony of Vedas, creation-sequence, proved by perceptions of direct cognition, etc., behavior according to self = Soul, and truthful intellectuals, is only known as truth; and it is important to adopt and practice this truth by mind, speech, and body for a devotee on the path of Yoga. Such types of vows of veracity help the devotee for the fault-free performance of non-violence vow as above.
3. Abstinence from theft:- Theft is taking the objects of others without their permission. Giving away theft by mind, speech, and body is known as the absence of theft. Theft cannot be performed without aversion or greed; and by the theft, others receive pain, which again is known as violence. So, the adoption of abstinence from theft is a must for compliance with non-violence. The devotee should not even think of / wish to take the objects of others. When such a type of thought does not exist, then it cannot come in speech and physical form. There is a prohibition of a wish of an object of other beings, in the following way, in Yajurveda — "maa gridhaH kasya sviddhanam" (Yaju 40.1) One should not have wish or greed for the objects of others. By performing theft, one only gets the pains in the fruition system of the Supreme Lord GOD.
4. Continence:- For continence, Seer Vyaasa had said the control of generative organs. There are many secrets to such advice. In this regard, Swami Dayanand wrote - "always have full control of sex organs i.e., save semen by remaining away from eight types of co-habituations and live a long life and be good to others" (Sanskaara-vidhi)
Even a wish of adultery in the mind of a person is enough to destroy the vow of continence. For this, there is no need for the presence of another person (of the opposite sex). So, the intellectual had prescribed remaining away from eight types of co-habituations. The eight types of co-habituations are - viewing, touching, staying alone with others, speech, talks of sex, interaction with others, the concentration of sex thoughts, and intimacy, and one should remain away from these (Light of Truth - Chapter 3). Such advice also exists in an old scripture namely Dakshasmiti as —
brahmacharyam sadaa rakShet-aShTadhaa maithunam prithak.
smaraNam kiirttanam keliH prekShaNam guhyabhaaShaNam.
sa.nkalpo.adhyavasaayaH cha kriyaaniShpatti eva cha.
etat-maithun-aShTaa~Ngam pravadanti maniiShiNaH. (Dakshasmirti 7.31-32)
Always save the vow of continence, and remain away from eight types of co-habituations. The memory of a female (or a person of the opposite sex), talking about her, playing with her, keep looking at her, having secret talks with her, having thoughts of intercourse with her, trying to have intercourse with her, and performing same are the eight types of co-habituations.
By such defects, there is a loss of continence, and non-violence takes place by adultery, and loss of strength of his own body, and the person becomes powerless. And a powerless person cannot cognize the Soul and GOD. (Ref - naayammatma balahiinena labhyaH. (Mundaka-upaniShada 3.2.4); and satyena labhyaH tapsaa hi-eSha aatmaa samyag-GYaanena brahmacharyeNa nityam. (Mundaka-upaniShada 3.1.5))
So for the practice of continence, a devotee has to self-examine daily, destroy his defects, adopt virtuous properties, and virtuous acts; avoid malefic foods and take a pure and violence-free diet; leave the contacts of vicious persons; study the Vedic scriptures; control the mind and organs through regulation of breath; remain away from the talks, objects, and literature which increase sexual carving; live a simple life; remain away from eight types of co-habituations, etc. are the means. By this continence, the devotee lives a long life, and sperm saved, in this way, works as an instrument to attain subtle knowledge of GOD.
5. Abstinence of avariciousness:- Not collecting the material objects of enjoyment by seeing the defects of earning, preservation, attachment, destruction, and violence, is known as Abstinence of avariciousness. In order to attain enjoyment in the world, a person collects various types of material objects. But the enjoyment of these material objects is possible till the existence of the physical body. After death or even in the present life when the body is suffering from various diseases, these material objects do not remain of any use. On account of avariciousness, one accumulates various types of vehicles of action of attachment, aversion, illusion, and violence; this is explained in our commentary on aphorism 2.15. On account of the collection of material objects, one accumulates the above types of vehicles of action in one or another way. Seer Vyaasa described various types of defects as follows —
A. Defect of Earning — For attaining various transient material objects of this world, one has to work hard for a long time, and even sometimes has to forgo the performance of righteousness. In this way earning and collecting material objects is painful.
B. Defect of preservation — Even for preserving the material objects collected as above, one has to work hard. For preserving material objects, one performs various types of virtue-vice acts and accumulates vicious vehicles of actions mainly by adopting various rational and irrational means.
C Defect of Attachment — By enjoying the transient material objects of Matter, the desire of the person keeps on increasing; thereby having attachment towards such material objects and trying to attain more and more such material objects in order to enjoy such objects again and again; and in this way, these type residual potencies of attachment and enjoyment become more deeply rooted in the mind.
D. Defect of Destruction — These transient material objects, which were earned and preserved with hard work, get destroyed with time or do not remain available for enjoyment due to acts of others; and as a result, one experiences pain by such destruction.
E. Defect of Violence — For attaining and enjoying various material objects, various type of direct or indirect violence takes place. Seer Vyaasa had clearly said in 2.15 - "naan-upahatya bhuutaani-upabhogaH sambhavati-iti" i.e., enjoyment of worldly pleasure is not possible without giving pains to other living beings.
So, by seeing these types of defects, a devotee should remain away from away for attaining material objects. It is better not to attain enjoyable material objects, other than those which are required for living needs. A devotee is able to save himself from the defects of Egoism etc. by remaining away from such material enjoyments. So, the practice of abstinence from avariciousness is necessary for the faultless practice of non-violence.
The practice of this restraint is not restricted to attaining material objects only, but the devotee has to remain away from acquiring various types of knowledge other than the target of his life. Because, by becoming involved in such subjects, the target of salvation becomes secondary and other objects dominate his mind and he starts working accordingly. The time of devotees also gets wasted by giving time for logical thinking and concentrating on the knowledge of other objects. By having such type of state of abstinence of avariciousness in the mind, the modifications of mind, speech, and body also get restrained from the non-required knowledge of other objects.
The practice of five Restraints is necessary for the devotee in order to have the purity of his social affairs since the practice of five Restraints is mainly concerned with others. As pain is caused to others by violence, falseness, theft, etc. So, the first piece of advice is to stop the defects which cause pain to others. By removing such defects, internal purity also takes place.
