| Sutra No : 4
In English:
Component Word : avidyaa kShetram uttareShaam prasuptatanuvichChinnodaaraaNaam.
Sutra in English : avidyaa kShetramuttareShaa.m prasuptatanuvichChinnodaaraaNaam.4.
Meaning in English : (avidyaa) Nescience is (kShetram) field = birth-place (uttareShaam) for the afflictions following it (prasupta-tanu-vichchhinna-udaaraaNaam) whether they be dormant, tenuous, alternated = neutralized for the time being by another affliction or fully operative.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Out of the above nescience is the mother of other afflictions i.e., Egoism, etc, which keep the Souls in the ocean of pain i.e., in the wheels of the birth-death cycle. On the other hand, when the intelligent and virtuous devotee destroys the nescience by true knowledge, the soul achieves Salvation. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Emancipation)

Meaning In English : (atra) Of these afflictions (avidyaa) nescience is (kShetram) field i.e., (prasava-bhuumiH) birth-place for (uttareShaam) others that follow i.e., (asmitaa-aadiinaam) Egoism, etc. (chaturvidha-vikalpaanaam) having four-fold possible mode of their existence (prasupta-tanu-vichchhinna-udaaraaNaam) as the dormant, the tenuous, the alternated and the fully operative.
(tatra) There (kaa prasuptiH) what is dormancy? It is the existence (chetasi) in Mind, (shaktimaatra-pratiShThaanaam) as power alone (biija-bhavopagamaH) in the germinal state. (tasya prabodhaH) It is their awake i.e., turning active (aalambane sammukhii-bhaavaH) when their object = base becomes available.
What is the stage of afflictions in the mind of a Yogi who possesses discriminative knowledge? In the case of a Yogi who (prasa.nkhyaana-vataH) possesses discriminative knowledge and (dagdha-kleshabiijasya) the seeds of afflictions are signed by him; (api) even when (aalambane sammukhii-bhuute) objects = base come in front = become available, (asau) their operation (punaH na asti) is not possible again. (kutaH) How can (dagdhabiijasya) the burnt-up seed (prarohaH iti) sprout? (ataH) Hence, such Yogi (kShiiNa-kleshaH) whose afflictions are gone (uchyate) is said as (kushalaH) efficient and (charamadehaH iti) have had his last birth.
(saa) That (pa~nchamii) the fifth (kleshaavasthaa) stage of afflictions which is named as (dagdhabiija-bhaavaa) burnt-up state, (tatraiva) exists in a Yogi with discriminative knowledge only (na anyatra iti) not in any other person. (tadaa) In that state, (sataam kleshaanaam) although the afflictions do exist in the mind of such Yogi, however, their (biija-saamarthyam) seed-power had been (dagdham iti) burnt-up, So, (eShaam prabodha na bhavati) they do not awake even when (viShayasya) an object = base for them (api) also (sammukhii-bhaave sati) comes in front of them. (iti) In this way, (prasuptiH) dormancy of afflictions (cha) and (aprarohaH) non-sprouting of (dagdha-biijaanaam) burnt-up seeds of afflictions is (uktaaa) explained.
(tanutvam) Tenuity (uchyate) is now described — (kleshaaH) Afflictions (bhavanti) become (tanavaH) tenuous (pratipakSha-bhaavanopahataaH) on being suppressed by habituation of contraries.
(tathaa) And (vichchhinnaaH) they are said as alternated when they (samudaacharanti) appear (punaH punaH) again and again (vichchhidya vichchhidya) alternatively = spasmodically (tena tena aatmanaa iti) in their original form. (katham) How? (krodhasya) Anger is (adarshanaat) not observed to be in operation (raagakaale) at the time of attachment, (hi) since (krodhaH) anger (na) does not (samudaacharati) arise (raagakaale) when attachment is in operation. (This is time alteration of affliction.) (cha) and when (raagaH) attachment is (drishya-maanaN) manifesting in (kvachit) one object, (na) it does not mean that (na asti) it does not exist (viShayaantare) for other objects; as when (chaitraH) a person named "Chaitra" (raktaH) is attached to (ekasyaam striyaam) one woman, (na) it does not mean that he is (viraktaH) averse to (anyaasu striiShu iti) other women. (kintu) On the other hand (raagaH) his attachment (tatra) in that woman (labdha-vrittiH) is manifested itself, and (anyatra tu) while for other women (bhaviShyat vrittiH iti) it can be active = operative in future. (This is called object alteration of affliction). (hi) Thus (saH) that attachment which can appear in the future (bhavati) become (prasupta-tanu-vichchhinnaH) either dormant, tenuous, or alternated (tadaa) at that time.
(saH) The affliction (yaH) which (labdha-vrittiH) has found manifestation (viShaye) in the object (udaaraH) is called fully operative.
(ete sarvam eva) All these types (na) do not (atikraamanti) pass beyond (klesha-viShayatvam) the sphere of affliction. (kaH tarhi) Then how (kleshaH) affliction is called as (vichchhinnaH) alternated, (prasuptaH) dormant, (tanuH) tenuous, (vaa) or (udaaraH iti) fully operative? (uchyate) It is said that (etat) these four types are affliction (eva) only, (satyam) is true. (kintu) But (eteShaam) they are called as (vichchhinnaaditvam) alternated or anyone else (vishiShTaa-naam eva) only when they appear as So, qualified. (yathaiva) As all these afflictions are (nivrittaH) removed (pratipakSha-bhaavanaataH) by habituation to contraries, (tathaiva) So, they (abhivyaktaH) appear = manifested (svavya~njakaa~njanena iti) by the operation of its competent cause.
(amii sarva eva kleshaaH) All these = Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death, are (avidyaaH bhedaaH) the types of Nesciences only. (kasmaat) How? Since (avidyaa eva) Nescience alone (abhiplavate) is the base for (sarveShu) all these afflictions. (yad vastu) The object = subject which is (aakaaryate) presented or appeared through (avidyayaa) Nescience, (kleshaaH) other afflictions (anusherate) follow (tadeva) that object = subject since they (= afflictions) (upalabhyante) found existing (viparyaasa-pratyayakaale) simultaneously with cognition of unreal; (cha) and (anukShiiyante) disappear along with (kShiiyamaaNaam) disappearance of (avidyaam iti) Nescience.
Vedic Commentary in English : The cause of bondage for the Soul is Nescience, which is an affliction. It is the main among all five afflictions. Seer Patanjali had declared it as the birth-place of all other afflictions, i.e., till the existence of Nescience, the existence of other afflictions namely Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death remain in the mind of the person; and on cessation of Nescience, all these afflictions also cease to exist. Seer Patanjali said that there are four states of these four afflictions i.e., Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death, which are as follows—
1. Dormant:- In the dormant state the afflictions exist in the mind, with their capacity to produce their fruits = results. In this state whenever there are favorable and supporting circumstances or bases become available, then these afflictions come in the operative state. As in childhood the various afflictions, though present in the mind of the child, do not become operative since the supporting circumstances are not available and hence remain dormant only. The same child when grows up, then the Attachment and Aversion become operative in his mind and he becomes attached to favorable objects = subjects = persons and has the feeling of Aversion toward causes of pain and unfavorable persons = objects. In this way countless residual potencies of beginning-less life-states exist in the mind, in the dormant state; and some of these come in the operative mode whenever some suitable base or operative cause becomes available for them.
2. Tenuous:- The afflictions are said as tenuous when they are weakened. For weakening these afflictions, the performance of Yoga of Action is advised. The afflictions are suppressed by the proper performance of Yoga of Action and habituation of contraries and remain in the mind in such a state. Afflictions in the tenuous state do not become operative, in the normal course, on having any base for them. As in the case of a Yogi, by the continuous performance of Purificatory Action, Study, and Devotion to GOD, the afflictions, being weakened, do not become operative and produce their fruits. But if some strong base or supporting circumstance does arise, or the practice of performance of Yoga is on the lower track or abandoned, then these afflictions again come into operative mode.
In the case of a dormant state, afflictions are not operative, but these become operative on having any base or normal supporting circumstance made available; on the other hand, afflictions in the tenuous state become operative only if some strong base becomes available.
3. Alternated:- This state of affliction is said as neutralized for the time being by another affliction. Whenever any affliction is suppressed by other operative strong affliction, then such suppressed affliction is said as alternated. These alternated afflictions appear again and again in their original form alternatively. Alteration of afflictions is of two types i.e., time alteration and object alteration. In the time alteration, one type of affliction gets suppressed by another opposite forceful affliction - as at the time when 'Attachment' is operative, then 'Aversion' remains suppressed; and when the 'Aversion' is operative, then 'Attachment' remains suppressed. In case of object alteration, on account of forceful affliction for one base, the affliction for the same type of other bases remains suppressed - as in case of a person who is attached to a particular woman at a particular time, at that time his attachment towards other women remains suppressed and do become operative at other time; i.e., operative 'Attachment' for one object, make the 'Attachment' for another object under suppressed phase.
4. Fully Operative:- Whenever any affliction is manifested towards any object, then such affliction is known as fully operative.
These four states of afflictions commonly exist in all persons. Seer Vyaasa explains the fifth state of affliction, which exists in the mind of a devotee who has attained discriminative knowledge, as follows:-
5. Burnt-up State:- In the mind of Yogi, seeds of afflictions being in the burnt-up state, these afflictions do not become operative i.e., do not produce their results, even the base for such affliction become available. As a burnt-up seed does not sprout again even after proper water, atmosphere, and fertilizers are provided; so, these afflictions also, being burnt-up by the fire of Higher Intellection = discriminative knowledge, though existing in the mind, being incapable, cannot become operative towards their base. Such Yogi is said to have had his last birth.
All these afflictions (= Nescience etc.) remain as afflictions in all the four states, not only in the operative state but remain as a cause of bondage for the Soul. These afflictions are termed as affliction only, though in any of the four states of dormancy, tenuous, alternated, and operation on account of the performance of Yoga of Action, availability, or non-availability of various bases for them, and having or not having bodily capacities for making them operative.
The ultimate aim of the devotee is to bring all these afflictions to the burnt-up state. If any affliction, in any state, is present in the mind of the devotee, then cessation of pain and bondage cannot be possible for him. If any devotee, only accepts alternated and operative afflictions as the cause of his pains and controls these afflictions by the performance of various means; even then the afflictions present in the dormant and tenuous state can become operative on availability of any base for them and with the result, the devotee will be suffering pains from them in the same way again, as he was suffering pains from the existing operative and alternated afflictions. Some devotees suggest that try to make available the bases for the dormant and tenuous afflictions and see whether these become operative or not. This method may be hearing pleasant to check the level of afflictions, but it is not proper and adaptable as there are innumerable residual potencies accumulated in the mind since eternity. It cannot be said that when any affliction, on account of eternally accumulated residual potencies, will become operative on finding any forceful base for it. So, it cannot be said that when any such experiment before the burnt-up state, will put the devotee in the vicious life-cycle of this universe more strongly. In this regard, the example of the life of Swami Dayanand Saraswati is worth following. It can be seen from his biography that he did not use to permit ladies to come to his place and did not use to advise them separately. If a Yogi and continence performer like Swami Dayanand Saraswati used such precautions, then there might have been above said possible reason; otherwise, he would have tested for the affliction (= Attachment towards ladies) in his lifetime. But not doing so, is an indication to the other devotees also that they should not try to test any possibility that the dormant or tenuous affliction becomes operative or not, by making available various bases = competent cause for such afflictions. On the other hand, he should remain away from any such experiments and keep on moving on the path of Yoga and keep performing the various accessories of Yoga and should work hard in order to make the afflictions like the burnt-up seeds.
The main cause of four afflictions i.e., Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of death is Nescience only. On account of Nescience, only these four remain existing and appear in the mind by following the wrong knowledge; on weakening of Nescience, other four afflictions also get weakened, and on cessation of Nescience other afflictions also cease to exist. So, the devotee should adopt various means for the removal of Nescience which is the cause of pain and bondage for the Soul.
