Sutra in English : vitarkabaadhane pratipakShabhaavanam .33.
Meaning in English : (baadhane) Upon troubling of (vitarka) thoughts of sins i.e., violence, falseness, etc. (pratipakSha-bhaavanam) one should habituate his mind to the contrary ideas.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : yadaasya braahmaNasya hi.msaadayo vitarkaa jaayeranhaniShyaam-yahamapakaariNamanRRitamapi vakShyaami dravyamapyasya sviikariShyaami daareShu chaasya vyavaayii bhaviShyaami parigraheShu chaasya svaamii bhaviShyaamiiti. evamunmaarga-pravaNavitarkajvareNaatidiiptena baadhyamaanastatpratipakSha-anbhaavayet. ghoreShu sa.msaaraa~NgaareShu pachyamaanena mayaa sharaNamupaagataH sarvabhuutaabhayapradaanena yogadharmaH. sa khalvaham tyaktvaa vitarkaanpunastaanaadadaanastulyaH shvavRRitteneti bhaavayet. yathaa shvaa vaantaavalehii tathaa tyaktasya punaraadadaana iti. evamaadi suutraantareShvapi yojyam.
Meaning In English : (yadaa) When (hi.nsaadayaH vitarkaaH) thoughts of the sin, of causing violence, etc., (jaayeran) appear in the mind of (asya braahmaNasya) this devotee of wisdom, such as (aham haniShyaami) "I shall kill (apakaariNam) the evil-doer"; and to this evil-doer (vakShyaami api) "I shall also tell (anritam) lie"; (sviikariShyaami api) "I shall also appropriate = forcefully take (asya) this evil-doer's (dravyam) wealth"; (cha) and (vyavaayii bhaviShyaami) "I shall immorally spoil (asya) this evil-doer's (daareShu) wife, etc."; (cha) and (svaamii bhaviShyaami) "I shall possess (parigraheShu) the things possessed (asya iti) by evil-doer."
(evam) On being (baadhyamaanaH) oppressed by (atidiiptena unmaarga-pravaNa-vitarka-jvareNa) the high fever of these sins which tends to push him towards the path of afflictions, (bhaavayet) he should habituate himself (tat pratipakShaan) to think upon the contraries of such sins. (bhaavayet) He should entertain such idea as — (pachyamaanena) "On being burnt-up (ghoreShu sa.nsaara-a~NgaareShu) in the deep fire of this world (= life-death-life-cycle) (mayaa) I (upaagataH) had taken (sharaNam) refuge (yoga-dharmaH) in the practice of yoga (sarva-bhuuta-abhaya-pradaanena) with the wish to give protection to all living beings. (saH khalu aham) If that I (aadadaanaH) take up (taan vitarkaan) those sins (punaH) again, (tyaktvaa) which had been given up, (shvavrittena tulyaH iti) I should be acting like a dog." (yathaa) As (shvaa) the dog (vaantaa-avalehii) licks up its own vomit (tathaa) So, (aadadaanaH) I am taking up (punaH) again (tyaktasya iti) the sins which had been given up for the purpose of practice of Yoga i.e., to know myself = Soul and GOD. (evam aadi) This should be (yojyam) applied to (suutraantareShu api) other aphorisms (= other accessories of Yoga) also.
Vedic Commentary in English : When the devotee starts moving on the path of Yoga, with a vow to practice the Restraints and Observances, and during such practice, if some adverse position arises, then due to eternal accumulated potencies of Nescience, Attachment, and Aversion, etc. the thoughts of sins, which are opposite of Restraints, automatically get manifested in his mind. In order to control such a situation Seer Patanjali advised that the devotee should think about the contraries of such sins.
When any person does something wrong towards a person (and/or his loved ones), who is moving on the path of Yoga for the well-being of self and having the wish to cognize GOD, or causes physical damage or destroys the means available with him; then such type of modifications get manifested in his mind — "I shall also kill or teach a lesson to this evil-doer; shall also speak lie in order to cause him losses or do wrong; shall also forcefully take his wealth; shall also immorally spoil = perform adultery with the wife, sister, and/or daughter of this person; shall also forcefully possess the things possessed by this person."
Seer Patanjali mentioned all the five thoughts of sins which are opposites of the Restraints. On having such type of dominating modifications, it is very common for a man to move on the path of vice. In normal life, one does perform such type of acts, on being afflicted by such thoughts. But for the devotee who is moving on the path of Yoga, Seer Vyaasa said that when he is oppressed by the fever of modifications of violence, falseness, etc., then he should habituate himself to thoughts of contraries of such sins, i.e., should adopt the modifications of contraries of violence, etc. He should think that I am experiencing various pains in the life-cycle since eternity, on being moving in the various life-states, on account of being possessed by the afflictions of Nescience, etc. In this way on being affected by the majority of pains on account of consequence, anxiety, and habituation and also pains on account of the contrariety of the functions of "Qualities", now in this life with the wish to attain well-being of self, and with the purpose to know and cognize the Soul and GOD, and to destroy the afflictions of Nescience, etc., and in order to not to have the enmity with other living beings, I had taken the vow of non-violence and taken refuge in the practice of Yoga. And now on having this opposite state of affairs in my life, I again want to get afflicted by Nescience, etc., and give up the path of Yoga (= path of self-improvement) and want to perform such acts of violence, etc. on account of which I was moving in the life-cycle since eternity and experiencing the pains in various life-states. While moving on this path of Yoga, and performing acts of violence, etc. again, my conduct will be as of a dog - as a dog licks up his own vomit again, in the same way, whatever sins of violence, etc. I had given up, and on performing such sins again in my life, my conduct will be as of a dog only. If the devotee sees the scene of licking up of vomit by the dog in his front, then the potency manifested in his mind on account of such a scene will help him to stop the modifications of violence, etc., and adopt such modifications again.
In fact, the potencies generated in various lives are So, strong, that on having any adverse situation in life, one does create the modifications of violence, etc. without any effort on his part. And if he keeps on thinking about such modifications and keeps performing according to such modifications in his life, then the modifications of violence, etc. automatically get manifested in his mind without any effort. But a devotee who wants to move on the path of Yoga has to put special efforts to stop such modifications. He has to understand that he himself is the generator of thoughts of sins. A mind is an inanimate object, and it cannot perform any act on its own. Without the wish of the Soul, no modification can get manifested in the mind. He understands that whatever thought I will generate, the same modification will take place in the mind. If there is a practice of generating thoughts of sins, then it will be difficult to stop such thoughts. The devotee must understand how much big loss is taking place by generating the thoughts of sins and performing according to them; he must know that on account of thoughts of sins and performance according to them, he is getting the fruits of pains and ignorance in the fruition system of GOD since eternity, and this position will continue in the future also and he will not be able to get relieved from the continuous cycle of pains. So, the devotee must stop the thoughts of sins at the beginning itself by generating the contraries of such thoughts again and again. In this way, the weakened potencies of thoughts of sins do not destabilize the devotee from the path of Yoga.
The devotee is not to generate the contraries for the opposites of restraints only, but he has to generate the contraries for all the accessories of Yoga in order to suppress the opposite thoughts which are obstacles to their performance.
