Meaning in English : (hi.nsaadayaH) Violence and others, opposites of Restraints and Observances are (vitarkaa) sins. They are (krita-kaarita-anumoditaa) done (by self), caused to be done (by others) and approved = approbated (which are done by others); (lobha-krodha-moha-puurvakaa) preceded by desire, anger, and illusion; (mridu-madhya-adhimaatraa) are slight, middling and intense in nature; (duHkha-aj~naana-anantaphalaa) their result is infinite pain and ignorance; (iti) this way the devotee (pratipakSha-bhaavanam) should habituate himself to the contraries.

Meaning In English : (tatra) Of these (taavat) the first (hi.nsaa) violence is (tridhaa) of three descriptions — (krita-kaarita-anumoditaa iti) 1. done by self; 2. cause to be done by others; and 3. done by others but supported = approved = approbated by me. (ekaa ekaa punaH tridhaa) Each type is again three-fold — (lobhena) prompted by desire is (maa.nsa-charmaarthena) to obtain the flesh and skin of other living beings; (krodhena) prompted by anger is (apakritam anena iti) to cause harm to one who has done wrong to self; (mohena) prompted by illusion is (dharmo me bhaviShyati iti) with the impression that by this act, virtue will take place or my duties towards my family, etc. will be accomplished. This way the violence is nine-fold.
(lobha-krodha-mohaaH) Desire = greed, anger, and illusion are (punaH) again (trividhaaH) three-fold — (mridu-madhya-adhimaatraa iti) mild = slight, middling, and intense. (evam) Thus (bhavanti) there are (sapta-vi.nshatiH bhedaaH) twenty-seven types of (hi.nsaayaaH) violence.
(mridu-madhya-adhimaatraaH) Mild, middling, and intense are (punaH) again (trividhaaH) three-fold each, as (mridu-mriduh-madhya-mriduh-tiivramriduH iti) mild-mild, middling-mild and intense mild are three types of mild; (tathaa) similarly (mridu-madhyo madhya-madhyah-tiivra-madhyaH iti) mild-middling, middling-middling, and intense-middling are three types of middling; and (tathaa) similarly (mridu-tiivro madhya-tiivro-adhimaatra-tiivraH iti) mild-intense, middling-intense, and intense-intense are three types of intense. (evam) Thus (hi.nsaa) violence (bhavati) is of (ekaashiitiH bhedaaH) eighty-one descriptions.
(saa) This violence (punaH) again (asa.nkhyeyaa) becomes infinite (niyama-vikalpa-samuchchaya-bhedaat) on account of rule, option, and conjunction, since (praaNabhrid bhedasya) living beings causing distinction as above (aparisa.nkhyeyatvaat iti) are infinite. (evam) Similarly, this classification (api) also (yojyam) be applied (anritaadiShu) to untruthfulness, etc.
(pratipakSha-bhaavanam) One should habituate himself to the contraries on the belief (te khalu amii vitarkaaH) that these immoral thoughts = acts of sins certainly cause (duHkha-aj~naana-ananta-phalaaH iti) infinite pain and ignorance as fruits. It means that (duHkham) pain (cha) and (aj~naanam) ignorance are (anantam) unending (phalam) fruits of (yeShaam) those immoral thoughts of sins (iti) So, (pratipakSha-bhaavanam) we should habituate ourselves with the contrary trends of thoughts.
(tathaa cha) Since (hi.nsakaH) killer (taavat prathamam) first (aakShipati) destroys (viiryam) the power of (vadhyasya) the living being whom he wants to kill. (tataH cha) And then (duHkhayati) gives him pain (shastraadi-nipaatena) by a blow from weapons; (tataH) then (mochayati) separates that living being (jiivitaat) from life (api) also. (tataH) Now (viirya-akShepaat) as a consequence of destroying the power of that living being, (asya) his (chetana-achetanam upakaraNam) conscious and material means of experience (bhavati) become (kShiiNa-viiryam) powerless. (duHkha-utpaadaat) By causing pain and killing living beings this violent (anubhavati) experience (duhkham) pain (naraka-tiryak-pretaadhiShu) by taking birth in painful lives, animals, earth-bound disembodied spirits, etc.
(jiivitavyaparuupaNaat) By taking the life of other living beings, he (varttamaanaH) lives (pratikShaNam) every moment (jiivitaatyaye) in a state of waning life, (cha) and (api) also (maraNam ichchhan) prefer for death; and yet (duHkha-vipaakasya niyata-vipaaka-vedaniiyatvaat) since the effect of pain is fixed for such actions, (katha~nchit eva) he somehow (uchchhvasiti) lives on. (cha) And (yadi katha~nchit) if somehow (hi.nsaa) his violent acts (puNya-avaapagataa bhavet) become fruitful during the enjoyment of virtue, then (tatra sukhapraaptau) even having the enjoyment of pleasure (alpaayuH bhavet iti) he is short-lived.
(evam) In the same way, these observances (yojyam) are to be applied, (yathaa-sambhavam) as far as may be, (anritaadiShu api) to untruthfulness also. (cha) And (evam) thus (bhaavayan) by ascertaining the (aniShTam) unwanted (vipaakam) fruits of (amum eva) pain and ignorance only (anugatam) which follow (vitarkaaNaam) these sins, the devotee (na praNidadhiita) should not allow (manaH) his mind (vitarkeShu) to rest over evil = sinful acts.
Vedic Commentary in English : The thoughts of contraries are prescribed for the devotee to remove = destroy the thoughts of sins (= violence, etc.) manifested in the mind. How these contraries are to be accomplished? is described in this aphorism. First of all, types of sins of violence (and other opposites of Restraints i.e. untruthfulness, etc.) and their causes are explained in the aphorism. The types and causes of other opposites of Restraints are to be understood in the same ways, as is explained for violence. The reason for explaining the types of violence and other thoughts of sins is that one considers himself responsible for the violence caused by himself only, and he does not consider himself responsible for the other types of violence (i.e., caused to be done by others and supported one) and keeps on performing the same during his lifetime and consider himself as a virtuous performer.
The three types of violence are as follows — 1. done by me; 2. cause to be done by others, in this type the violence is not performed by me, but I inspire others to do such violence either directly or indirectly; and 3. one which is done by others and same is approved = approbated by me. This type of violence is neither done by me, nor is inspired by me, but I support the violence done by others either directly or indirectly. As someone has killed my enemy, then I thought in my mind that it is good that my enemy had got killed since he was a bad person = vice-performer (this is mental support); or I went to the killer and praised him verbally for his act or I communicated him such thoughts by any other means i.e., over the phone, etc. (this is verbal support); or I supported that killer by my behavior in physical form (this is physical support). In this way purchasing, accepting, and using clothes and products made from the skins of animals is a form of supported violence.
These three types of violence are caused by three reasons of desire = greed, anger, and illusion. Violence caused by greed is to obtain the flesh and skin of other living beings; violence prompted by anger is to cause harm to others who had done wrong or caused harm to me, my relatives, means of enjoyment; and violence prompted by illusion is with the thought = impression that by such violence act a virtue will take place, as prescribed in the scripture of my belief, and/or my duties towards my family and other related conscious objects will be accomplished. In this way, this is nine-fold violence. This nine-fold violence is again three-fold namely mild, middling, and intense in nature; and Seer Vyaasa had prescribed further three categories of mild, middling, and intense which make it the eighty-one-fold violence.
This eighty-one-fold violence is also of infinite descriptions on account of rule, option, and conjunction. The distinction between rule, option, and conjunction is to be understood as follows —
Rule — As some fisherman says - "I will kill fish only, and no other animal being; since this is my profession or fish-eating is our family tradition or fish is the normal food at our place, or I like fish as a food, or by eating fish I remain away from a particular disease”, etc., etc. There can be any reason for such a rule or any other cause for such a rule.
Option — I shall either kill the goat or fish only, not any other animal.
Conjunction — I will kill any available animal, and shall not spare anyone. As people in some parts of this world even kill and eat snakes, cockroaches, cats, dogs, lions, worms, etc.
Seer Vyaasa said that as the number of persons making a rule, options, and conjunction are infinite, So, the violence also is of infinite descriptions.
One, who adopts violence and other sins, receives the fruits of infinite pain and ignorance. Why does one get the pain? While explaining the reason for receiving the pain, Seer Vyaasa said that the killer, first of all, catches hold of the animal whom he wants to kill, disables him from moving, causes him pain by the blow of a knife, etc., and lastly kills the animal. In this way by destroying the powers of other living beings, the conscious and unconscious means of his pleasure also become powerless. Such a violent person receives various types of pains during his lifetime and receives pains by taking birth in painful lives, life-states of animals, after his death from the present body, in the fruition system of GOD. And in case the fruits of his violent acts become fruitful along with the enjoyment of dominating virtuous acts, then even having the enjoyment of pleasure on account of virtuous acts, he becomes short-lived; and on the result of his early death, the means of enjoyment do not remain available for his enjoyment.
The person who adopts such acts of sins of violence, untruthfulness, etc., being away from the true knowledge, remains possessed by Nescience. By the fruits of such acts, the same type of residual potencies is generated, and on account of such potencies, he again performs the same type of sins; which had been described as habituation pain in the aphorism 2.15 above. In this way contraries of violence etc. — fruits of pain by such acts — residual potencies according to such acts and fruits — performance of same acts on account of such potencies — the fruition of pains by such acts — generation of potencies and again the same type of acts; this cycle moves infinitely. In this way, the person involved in this vicious cycle receives infinite pains and ignorance only as fruits. So, the devotee should know and understand this vicious cycle, and in order to break this cycle, should adopt contraries of violence, etc at the beginning itself and remain away from the opposites of Restraints and Observances.
