Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 40
In English:
Component Word : shauchaat svaa~Ngajugupsaa paraiH asa.msargaH.
Preface to Sutra in English : niyameShu vakShyaamaH —
Meaning in English : (vakShyaamaH) We shall now speak of attainments which can be achieved (niyameShu) on the establishment of observances —
Sutra in English : shauchaatsvaa~Ngajugupsaa parairasa.msargaH.40.
Meaning in English : (shauchaat) By performing the internal and external cleanliness (svaa~Nga-jugupsaa) yogi becomes detached from his own body on account of impurities in it and also (asa.nsargah) cessation of contact takes place (paraiH) with the bodies of others.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Observances, the second accessory of worship, are the cooperative cause of Restraints. The performance of these is very helpful to the devotee and this is also five-fold. Attainment of cleanliness is as follows —
Even by the performance of two types of cleanliness, one's own body and its all parts remain impure internally and externally, then it is also ascertained that the bodies of all living beings are full of excrement. With this knowledge yogi hesitate = hates to come in contact with the bodies of others and remains away.
(Rigvedaadibhashyaabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : svaa~Nge jugupsaayaam shauchamaarabhamaaNaH kaayaavadyadarshii kaayaanabhiShva~Ngii yatirbhavati. ki~ncha parairasa.msargaH kaayasvabhaavaavalokii svamapi kaayam jihaasurmRRijjalaadibhir-aakShaalayannapi kaayashuddhimapashyankatham parakaayairatyantameva-aprayataiH sa.msRRijyeta.
Meaning In English : (yatiH) Yogi (shaucham aarabhamaaNaH) performs the cleanliness (jugupsaayaam) being disgusted with the impurities (svaa~Nge) of parts of his body and (kaayaavadyadarshii) seeing the defects of impurities of the body, he (kaayaan abhiShva~Ngii bhavati) losses his attachment to the body. (kim cha) And also (asa.nsargaH) ceases to come in contact (paraiH) with the others (i.e., their bodies). Since (kaaya-svabhaava-avalokii) by seeing the impure nature of the body, and (jihaasuH) wisher of abandoning (svam) his own (kaayam) body (api) also, the yogi (aakShaalayan) even washing with (mrijjalaadibhiH) earth, water, etc. (api) also, (apashyan) does not see (kaaya-shuddhim) the purity of it, then (katham) how (samsrijyeta) should he come into contact (parakaayaiH) with the bodies of others (atyantam evaaprayataiH) who do not put full efforts to clean their bodies.
Vedic Commentary in English : By performing external cleanliness without any contraries, Yogi understands the fact that excreta always keeps out-flowing from all parts of bodies. Sweat from the pores of the body; excreta from eyes; excreta from ears; excreta from nose = phlegm; various types of excreta from mouth i.e., phlegm, vomit, etc.; excrements from lower penis and anus; in this way, excrements are out-flowing from the body in a natural way. And even the fresh air taken in by breath purifies the lung systems of the body and brings out impurities from the body along with it. There is always a need for purification of the body to remove the bad odors. Even the normal person uses various types of means i.e., water, soap, etc. to remove various types of excreta and keep the body clean. So, the body is such a factory that outflows only excreta from all its parts = pores.
Seer Vyaasa had described this body as impure on account of the following reasons in aphorism 2.5 —
sthaanaat-biijaat-upaShtambhaat-nisyandaat-nidhanaat-api.
kaayamaadheyashauchatvaat-paNditaa hi-ashuchim viduH.
i.e., the wise men certainly say the body is impure on account of its position in the womb which is full of excreta, its origin which is semen and menstruation of father and mother, its process to up-keep which results in blood, flesh, marrow, bone, and semen, etc. in the body, its perspiration i.e., an outflow of excreta, sweat, etc. from the holes of the body, its destruction by death and also a necessity of keeping it constantly clean.
In the same way, SeerManu said in this regard —
ashthi-sthuuNam snaayuyutam maa.nsashoNitalepanam.
charmaavanaddham durgandhipuurNam muutrapuriiShayoH.
jaraashokasamaaviShTam rogaayatanamaaturam.
rajasvalam-anityam cha bhuutaavaasamimam tyajet. Manusmriti 6.76-77.
One should have the modification of detachment in the body which is a structure of bones, have nerves as ropes, full of flesh and blood, covered by skin, full of the foul smell of urine and stool, and have the phases of old age and sorrow, house of diseases, oppressed by hunger and thirst, get destroyed in the form of earth and base of the gross object.
By knowing the such reality of the body, Yogi has hatred towards his own parts of the body and gives away attachment to this body. When he does not have an attachment to his own body, then in such a situation he does not have an attachment to the bodies of other human beings, and he does not wish to come in contact with the bodies of others. He knows that when even after performing so much cleanliness by me, the body remains impure and keeps out-flowing various excreta from time to time, then in such situations who does not perform the cleanliness process like me, how their bodies can be pure; however, they may suppress the bad odor for the time being by using artificial deodorants and perfumes, but the outflow of excreta does not stop from the body.
On having the wish to have contact with the body of an externally beautiful person, lady, or man, the devotee must understand that Nescience still exists in his mind, and my knowledge of the reality of the body is verbal only; my vow of cleanliness is not complete and is not without any contraries, and I still need further practice; my knowledge of defects and impurities of the body has not come in conduct.
By knowing the facts of the body as above, the yogi becomes detached even from the wish to come in contact with the bodies of others. Wishing for pleasure by being in contact with such type of impure bodies, is like the wish for a fresh and good smell while sitting on the heap of excreta or hugging the jar of excreta !!! How is it possible?
