Sutra in English : anityaa.ashuchiduHkhaa.anaatmasu nityashuchisukhaa.a.atmakhyaatiravidyaa.5.
Meaning in English : (avidyaa) Nescience is (khyaatiH) to take (anitya-ashuchi-duHkha-anaatmasu) non-eternal, impure, pain and the material world as (nitya-shuchi-sukha-aatma) eternal, pure, pleasure and soul.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The characteristics of Nescience are —
The false notion that the transient world and worldly things (such as bodies) are eternal or in other words, that the world of effects, that we see and feel, has always existed and will continue to exist forever, and that by virtue of the power of Yoga, the physical bodies of godly men become imperishable, is the first kind of Nescience.
To regard impure things, such as lustfulness and untruthfulness, as pure is the second kind of Nescience.
To believe that excessive sexual indulgence is a source of happiness, whilst it really causes pain and suffering, constitutes the third kind of Nescience.
To consider dead material things as possessed of the Soul is the fourth kind of Nescience.
This fourfold false knowledge is called Nescience. The reverse of it, viz., to look upon the non-eternal = temporal as non-eternal, eternal as eternal, pure as pure, impure as impure, pain as pain, pleasure as pleasure, non-soul as non-soul and soul as soul, is called knowledge.
That by which the true nature of things is known is called Knowledge, whilst that by which the true nature of things is not revealed and instead, a false conception of things is formed, is called Nescience. (Light of Truth - Chapter 9)
The characteristics of Nescience are to consider non-eternal, i.e., the gross objects like bodies of living beings, heavenly objects, and other things which are formed = created, as eternal, and eternal i.e., GOD, Soul, and Cause of World = Matter, relationship with regard to objects and its properties, etc. as non-eternal, is the first part of Nescience.
To regard the body which is full of excreta and having foul smell, as pure; and consider pool, well, deep-well with stairs, river, etc. as a place of pilgrimage and presume that our sins will remove by visiting these places; and bearing the pain of hunger-thrust on account of fasting and having an attachment for bodily sexual pleasure, etc. as pure acts = things; and regard true knowledge, truthfulness, virtue, worship of GOD, an association of pious men, control of sense organs, the beneficence of all others, etc. as impure, is the second part of Nescience.
To consider the pain as pleasure i.e., presume pleasure from the acts of lust-full-ness, sex, anger, greed, illusion, grief, jealousness, aversion, etc; and regard pain from the acts of control of sense organs, desirelessness, calmness, satisfaction, discretion, happiness, love, friendliness, etc. is the third part of Nescience.
To consider non-soul as Soul i.e., to consider Matter = inanimate as animate and animate as inanimate is the fourth part of Nescience.
These four types of Nesciences are the cause of bondage for the Souls and keep them in the life-death-life cycle. On the other hand, to consider non-eternal, impure, pain, and non-soul as non-eternal, impure, pain, and non-soul; and eternal, pure, pleasure, and Soul as eternal, pure, pleasure, and Soul respectively is true knowledge. Nescience is removed by true knowledge and this results in emancipation = salvation for the Soul.

Meaning In English : (khyaatiH) To take (anitye karye) non-eternal objects as (nitya) eternal objects is Nescience. (tadyathaa) For example, — (prithavii) Earth is (dhruvaa) permanent; (dyauH) the firmament (sachandra-taarakaa) with the moon and stars is (dhruvaa) permanent; and (divaukasa) the gods are (amritaaH) immortal, (iti) this is the first field of Nescience.
(tathaa) Similarly considering purity in (paramabiibhatse kaaye) highly disgusting body which is (ashuchau) altogether impure only. The cause of its impurity is explained as — "(paNDitaaH) The wise men (hi) certainly (viduH) say (kaayam) the body as (ashuchim) impure on account of (sthaanaat) its position in the womb which is full of excreta, (biijaat) its origin which is semen and menstruation of father and mother, (upaShTambhaat) its process to up-keep which results in blood, flesh, marrow, bone, and semen, etc in the body, (niH-syandaat) its perspiration i.e., outflow of excreta, sweat, etc. from the holes of the body, (nidhanaat) its destruction by death and (api) also (aadheya-shauchatvaat) necessity of keeping it constantly clean." (iti) Thus (shuchi-khyaatiH) purity is (driShyate) seen in (ashuchau) impure (shariire) body. How? The people presume in the case of woman body that — (iyam kanyaa) This girl is (kamaniiyaa) attractive (naveva shashaa~Nka-lekha) like the new moon, (madhu amritaavayava-nirmitaa iva) is made from the parts of honey and nectar, and (j~naayate) it appears that (niH-sritaa iva) she has emerged from (chandram bhittvaa) the moon, (niilotpala-patraayataakShii) her eyes are large like the leaves of a blue lotus, (haava-garbhaabhyaam lochanaabhyaam) with playful flashes of her eyes (aashvaasayanti iva) she imparts life to (jiiva-lokam iti) the world of men. Now (kasya abhi-sambandhaH) what is the relationship of such an impure body (ken) with the objects like honey, nectar, moon, etc? (cha) And (evam) this way (suchi-viparyaasa-pratyayaH) unreal cognition of purity (bhavati) takes place (ashuchau) in impure body, (iti) this is the second part of Nescience. (etena) By this (puNya-pratyayaH) cognition of sacred (apuNye) in the profane, (cha) and (tathaiva) also (artha-pratyayaH) cognition of purposeful (anarthe) in the purposeless subjects = objects (vyaakhyaataH) are described.
(tathaa) In the same way, (sukha-khyaatim) cognition of pleasure (duHkhe) in pain (vakShyati) will be explained in the aphorism 2.15 as (pariNaama-taapa-sa.nskaara-duHkhaiH-guNavritti-virodhaat cha duHkhameva sarvam vivekinaH iti) "All is a pain to the discriminating because of the consequence, anxiety, and habituation, and because of the contrariety of the functions of Qualities." (sukhakhyaatiH) Cognition of pleasure, (tatra) in these circumstances is (avidyaa) the third kind of Nescience.
(tathaa) Similarly, (aatmakhyaatiH) cognition of the Soul (anaatmani) in the non-soul = material world is the fourth kind of Nescience. As (aatmakhyaatiH) considering soul = self in (baahya-upakaraNeShu) external means, which are in the form of (chetana-achetaneShu) animates = wife, son, father, mother, friends, animals, etc. and inanimate = house, property, etc; (vaa) or (shariire) in the body (bhoga-adhiShThane) which is a vehicle of fruition = enjoyment; (vaa) or (anaatmani mansi) in mind which is inanimate and is (puruSha-upakaraNe) only a vehicle = mean of the Soul; (iti) this all is Nescience.
(tathaa) So, (atra) on this subject (etat uktam) the following has been said — "Those who (abhipratiitya) believing (vyaktam) the sentient = conscious i.e., wife, son, friend, animals, etc. (vaa) or (avyaktam sattvam) insentient i.e., house, property, land, gold, body, etc. (aatmatvena) as Soul = self, (anunandati) rejoice (tasya) in their (sampadam) increase (manvaanaH) believing it (aatmasampadam) the prosperity of the Self = Soul; and (anushochati) are anxious (tasya) in their (vyaapadam) distress, decrease, deterioration (manyamaanaH) believing it (aatmavyaapadam) deterioration = distress of Self = Soul; (sarvaH saH) all such people are (apratibuddhaH iti) ignorant = unwise = effected by Nescience."
(eShaa) This (chatuShpadaa) four-fold (avidyaa) Nescience (bhavati) is (muulam) root of (asya) all this (klesha-santaanasya) overgrowth of afflictions (cha) and (savipaakasya karmaashayasya iti) vehicles of actions together with its fruits.
(cha) And (tasyaaH) that Nescience (vij~neyam) should be understood (vastusatattvam) as being a real substance (amitra-agoShpadavat) like amitra = not friend and agoshpad = not cow's feet. (yathaa) As (amitraH) the word "Not-friend" (na) does not mean (mitra-abhaavaH) the absence of a friend, and (na) nor (mitramaatram) a particular friend (kintu) but (tad-viruddhaH) somebody opposite to friend, (sapatnaH) an enemy. (cha) And (yathaa) the same way (agoShpadam) word "not cow's feet" (na) does not mean (goShpada-abhaavaH) absence of cow's foot (na) nor (goShpadamaatram) a particular cow's foot, (kintu) but (desha eva) particular place only (anyat) distinct (taabhyaam) from both, (vastvantaram) another substance.
(evam) So, is (avidyaa) Nescience, (na) neither (pramaaNam) real cognition (na) nor (pramaaNa-abhaavaH) absence of real cognition; (kintu) but (avidyaa) Nescience is (vidyaa-vipariitam) contrary to real knowledge, and (j~naanaantaram iti) another forms of cognition.
Vedic Commentary in English : While explaining the characteristics and form of Nescience, which keep the Soul moving in the vicious cycle of actions and their fruits, it is said that it is the knowledge of eternal in the non-eternal objects, purity in the impure objects, pleasure in the painful acts = objects, and Soul = consciousness in the material objects. Similarly, the knowledge of non-eternal in the eternal objects, impurity in the pure objects, pain in the pleasure-full acts = objects, and un-consciousness in the Soul, is also Nescience.
As against this, knowledge of the object in its real form is real cognition and that is true knowledge; i.e., knowledge of non-eternal in non-eternal, eternal in eternal, purity in pure, impurity in impure, pain in pain, pleasure in pleasure, non-soul in non-soul and soul in soul, since in this way we know the real form of the object. Four types of Nesciences are to be understood in the following ways —
1. Eternal in non-eternal:- Knowledge of non-eternal objects as eternal is the first part of Nescience. As earth, firmament with sun, moon, and stars, etc. are eternal and are not formed i.e., existing since eternity and will remain as it is forever; such type of belief is Nescience; since no object, which has conjunctions, exists before such conjunctions, and believing them eternal is Nescience. The other form of this Nescience is explained by Swami Dayanand as - " eternal i.e., GOD, Soul, and Cause of World = Matter, relationship with regard to objects and its properties, etc. considering such objects as non-eternal i.e., made of conjunctions is also Nescience".
The object, which is created or is formed by the conjunctions of other objects, is inanimate, hence is non-eternal. These formed objects include all objects created in the system of GOD i.e., men, animals, birds, trees, the universe, etc., and created by human beings, from the available objects of Matter, for their comfort, pleasure, and needs such as a house, cloths, vehicles, etc. Any person easily accepts the objects made by him / human beings as non-eternal and sees the destruction of such objects, after their life span, in his lifetime also, and normally do not feel pain or sorrow on such destruction. On the other hand, he does not maintain such mental knowledge about his body. The body is born = is formed and hence is non-eternal. He sees the birth of his children and sees them growing, he sees the death of his parents, and even after such cognition he normally wishes that his body should remain forever, and not accept his body as non-eternal and keeps on performing vicious acts. He does not accept the unavoidable future death for himself. Knowledge of eternalness in this non-eternal body is the cause of all vice and ignorance.
There is no change of any kind, at any time, in the eternal conscious object Soul; on the other hand, in the inanimate Matter, all types of changes take place, all the objects in this universe are created from Matter, there are material changes as well as characteristic, quality and conditional changes do take place in gross objects. Such form = modifications and changes prove the non-eternalness of these objects. It is said by Yaska in Nirukta 1.2, with regard to material objects as - "object takes form, comes in existence, gets modified, increases, gets deteriorated and lastly will destroy". This process takes place in all the objects formed of Matter.
2. Purity in impure:- The most impure and disgusting object in this world is the body of a living being. To prove its impurity Seer Vyaasa gave the following reasons —
- This body gets created in the womb of the mother which is full of excreta. The creation place is not at all pure having blood and other impurities existing there. The body gets developed in such objects. No one likes to keep such objects separately, in his life and consider them pure.
- The origin of this body is semen and menstruation of the father and mother and these are not normally considered as worth accumulating outside the body.
- Whatever one intakes for up-keeping this body, results in fluid, blood, flesh, marrow, bone, semen, etc. in the body. These bodily results, as part of the body, are necessary for keeping the body fit; but these are not worth storing separately outside the body and create loathness and ill-feeling.
- The perspiration system of the body outflows excreta = urine, stool, sweat, etc. from the holes of the body. Whatever fresh air is breathed in by the person, that too is mixed up with the impurities of the blood while purifying it in the body and outflows the impure air.
- When one dies i.e., the Soul gets departed from the body, no one likes to keep it with him. On death, the body automatically starts giving a bad odor and is ultimately destroyed.
- There is always a constant need for purification of the body by water etc.; hence one uses perfumes or other fragrances to suppress the bad odors of the body.
On the basis of the above reasons, the body is said as impure only. In such an impure body, the imagination of people (specifically for the female body) is that this is like the new moon, attractive, lovely, her body parts made of honey and nectar, of large attractive eyes, becoming the center of attraction, and is imparting life to the human beings in the world. And again, this body is compared with the honey and nectar, etc. which are worth taking, this is Nescience.
On continuous perspiration of various excreta from the holes of the body, it is certain the body is full of such excreta. Whatever excreta comes out from this body, no one likes to keep that with him, even though such excreta has outflowed from the body of Miss World or Miss Universe, or so, called most beautiful and pretty lady. When the excreta comes out of the body, then the person wants to remove it away from the body and do So, effortfully. Even to suppress the various bad odors of the body, one applies various perfumes and deodorants So, that there should not be bad smells. This body is like a jar of various excreta, which is made beautiful by applying various external means. Whenever this jar breaks up, it creates a foul smell only. Hence this body is impure only, and cognizing it pure and such behavior is Nescience only.
In the same way by this characteristic of nescience, cognition of sacred in the profane and cognition of purposefulness in the purposeless objects = subject is to be understood as nescience only. While explaining this conception Swami Dayanand Saraswati said — " consider pool, well, deep-well with stairs, river, etc. as a place of pilgrimage and presume that our sins will remove by visiting these places; and bearing the pain of hunger-thrust on account of fasting and having an attachment for bodily sexual pleasure, etc. as pure acts = things; and regard true knowledge, truthfulness, virtue, worship of GOD, an association of pious men, control of sense organs, the beneficence of all others, etc. as impure, is the second part of Nescience".
3. Pleasure in pain:- To consider pleasure from acts of lust-full-ness, sex, anger, greed, illusion, grief, jealousness, aversion, etc., which causes pain only, is the third part of Nescience. Seer Patanjali had declared everything as pain, to the discriminating, on account of consequence, anxiety, and habituation pain and because of the contrariety of the functions of Qualities, in aphorism 2.15. This will be explained in that aphorism.
4. Soul in non-Soul:- It is cognition of the Soul in the non-Soul objects. Seer Vyaasa had given three types of objects that are not Soul = Self i.e., —
1. External means available in the form of animate objects like wife = husband, children, parents, friends, etc., and also animal beings; and in the inanimate objects like property, house, etc;
2. Physical body which is a means for enjoyment and vehicle of fruition for the Soul;
3. Mind which is a means for the Soul for worldly enjoyments = experiences;
cognizance of Soul = self in all or any of the above conceptions, is Nescience only. By considering all such objects as Soul or form of Soul, one rejoices in their increase, as if it is a prosperity of Soul; and in the same way, become anxious in their distress, decrease, or deterioration, as if it is a deterioration of Soul. A person with discriminative knowledge considers all such believers ignorant and unwise.
This nescience is the cause of bondage for the Soul in this world, and for removal of it, one should acquire knowledge, i.e., cognizing the objects in their real form, which become the cause of cessation of nescience and achievement of salvation. Seer Vyaasa had used two syntaxes for Nescience namely "contrary to real knowledge" and "another form of cognition" and had given two examples of "not a friend" and "not cow's feet". It means that "not a friend" is the person who is the enemy, not merely the absence of friendship; similarly, the knowledge which is against the real form of the object is called Nescience, not merely the absence of real knowledge; and as the meaning of "not cow's feet" is meant for the particular place not merely the cow's feet or absence of cow's feet, in the same way, Nescience is another form of cognition, i.e., cognition of silver in the oyster shell.
The most common example of "another form of cognition" in the present world is knowledge of another Soul in another Soul (i.e., Knowledge of the Supreme Soul in the Soul), and almost all persons are afflicted by this unreal cognition = unreal knowledge. In the present-day knowledge of the Supreme Soul (=GOD) in the persons who either existed in the past i.e., Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, Lord Shiva, Durga, etc. by the followers of Hindu Philosophy, or accepting Jesus Christ as a son of GOD by the Christians, or Prophet Mohammed as the messenger of GOD by the Muslims, or accepting Guru (= Teacher) as worth worshipping in place of GOD, and worshipping them. In this world, people normally intermix the knowledge of the human Soul (who has the characteristics of having limited knowledge and a small form related to the afflictions, actions, fruitions, and its potencies) with GOD (who is omniscient and omnipresent and is never related to affliction, actions, fruition, and their potencies); believing and accepting the human Soul as GOD is Nescience only. The believers and propagators of such knowledge are in the darkness of Nescience, but all such persons believe themselves as the real follower, believer, and devotee of GOD and they do wish their well-being in this world and even think for absolute freedom = salvation and believe themselves as virtuous and knowledge-full persons. But in the absence of knowledge of Vedas, believing Soul as GOD, they neither have discriminative knowledge, nor are virtuous; nor are followers of the real form of GOD, and nor are a devotee to the GOD.
Swami Dayanand wrote in Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumika that "These four types of Nesciences are the cause of bondage for the Souls and keeps them in the cycle of life-death-life." The main cause of bondage for the Soul is Nescience; because of this, one gets related to the defects of Attachment and Aversion, and thereby perform vice-virtue acts and experience pain and pleasure in various life-states. On cessation of Nescience, the vicious cycle of defects - acts - life-cycle, and pains get destroyed and the Soul achieves salvation.
But this Nescience cannot be destroyed merely by hearing or reading the real form of knowledge. On the other hand, one has to adopt the other means of logical thinking, meditation cognition to achieve discriminative knowledge. Otherwise, undisturbed discriminative knowledge is not achieved and Nescience exists in the mind of the person, with the result that one remains involved in the life cycle. So, for the cessation of Nescience, it is must adopt the process of "shravaNa chatuShThaya" = “Four-steps Realisation” method i.e., logical thinking, meditation, and cognizance after hearing = studying the real form of knowledge. This meditation is the Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive Trance in the philosophy of Yoga, which helps one to cognize the real form of the object. If this process of Yoga is not adopted, then even on having the verbal knowledge of the real form of the objects, one will remain in the bondage and vicious life-cycle of birth and death and ultimately experience the pains in various life-states.
