Vyaasa Commentary in English : bhavantiiti vaakyasheShaH. shucheH sattvashuddhistataH saumanasyam tata aikaagryam tata indriyajayastatashchaatma- darshanayogyatvam buddhisattvasya bhavatiityetachChauchasthairyaad-adhigamyata iti.
Meaning In English : (bhavanti iti vaakyasheShaH) "are achieved by cleanliness" is part of aphorism. (shucheH) By cleanliness (sattvasuddhiH) purity of mind is achieved. (tataH) On having a purity of mind (saumanasyam) pleasure-ness of mind takes place. (tataH) By the pleasure-ness of mind (aikaagryam) one is able to achieve the state of one-pointedness of mind. (tataH) On achieving the one-pointedness of mind (indriya-jayaH) control of the senses is achieved. (cha) And (tataH) by control of organs (buddhi-sattvasya bhavati) one's mind has (aatmadarshana-yogyatvam iti) the ability to cognize the Soul. (etat) These attainments (adhigamyate) are achieved (shauchasthairyaat iti) by the establishment of internal and external cleanliness.
Vedic Commentary in English : By complying with cleanliness, and knowing the impurities of bodies, the devotee wants to live in solitude. Since he knows that the bodies of other human beings are also impure as his one, and by having contact with such impure bodies there will be no achievement but Nescience will only become deep-rooted. So, he gets concentrated on himself and put efforts into internal attainments by becoming an introvert. In this way, he attains purity of mind, pleasure-ness of mind, one-pointedness, control of senses, and the ability for cognizance of the Soul.
By complying with the vow of internal cleanliness, when the devotee gives up the defects of Attachment and Aversion etc. which get generated on account of the existence of Nescience in the mind, then the mind of such devotee, after cessation of impurities of Qualities of Activity and Inertia, becomes dominated by Quality of Illumination; and with the result, first of all, his mind become pure. In this way with such a mental state (= mind which is dominated by the Quality of Illumination), the devotee complies with the vows of friendliness, etc. as given in aphorism 1.33, and attains the pleasure-ness of mind. On attaining the pleasure-ness of mind, the devotee attains one-pointedness by practicing the various means of steadiness as prescribed in aphorism 1.33-38 above.
Now on attaining the one-pointedness of mind, the devotee puts his organs on one subject = object. In this state, he abandons the external objects that can be grasped by the organs and concentrates his mind on the internal subjects, and primarily on the self = Soul. In this way, the state of steadiness of mind, which is attained by restraint of external subjects of organs, is known as control of organs. With the ability to control organs, the devotee attains the ability to cognize the Soul. By control of organs, the ability of cognizance of the Soul increases, SeerYamaa had explained this conception in Katha-upaniShada as —
kashchit-dhiiraH pratyagaatmaanamaikShadaavritta-chakShuH-amritatvam-ichchhan. (Kathaa-upniShada 4.1)
Some concentrated intellectuals by closing their eyes i.e., by turning from the external objects and moving towards the internal objects (= control of organs), wishing to attain salvation cognize the GOD in his inner-self. Here, by saying the closure of the eye means, being the primary object of obtaining the knowledge of external objects, control of all organs is advised and after obtaining a state of control of organs, the cognizance of GOD is advised.
All these attainments are achieved in the above sequence. By attaining the ability of the previous one, the devotee is able to attain the next one. The secret of the above attainments is also explained in Kathaa-UpaniShada below —
yastvaviGYaanavaan bhavatyamanaskaH sadaa.ashuchiH.
na sa tatpadamaapnoti sa.nsaaram chaadhigachchaati.
yastu viGYaanavaan bhavati samanaskaH sadaa suchiH.
sa tu tatpadamaapnoti yasmaad bhuuyo na jaayate. Katha-UpaniShada 3.7-8.
One who is afflicted by Nescience does not keep the body and mind pure, has no control over organs, cannot attain the knowledge of Soul and GOD, and keeps on moving in the life-cycle of this world. And one who has true knowledge, always performs cleanliness, with the pleasure-ness of mind and ability of concentration, attains the cognizance of Soul and GOD and gets free from the bonds of this world.
So, by complying with the cleanliness without any contraries, the devotee obtains the above attainments and with the result achieves the utmost fruit of Yoga i.e., salvation.
