Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 42
In English:
Component Word : santoShaat anuttamaH sukhalaabhaH.
Sutra in English : santoShaadanuttamaH sukhalaabhaH.42.
Meaning in English : (santoShaat) By the establishment of contentment (anuttamaH sukha-laabhaH) yogi gets extreme = non-comparable happiness.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The happiness which is received by contentment is non-comparable, and this is also called happiness of liberty. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : tathaa choktam—
yachcha kaamasukham loke yachcha divyam mahatsukham.
tRRiShNaakShayasukhasyaite naarhataH ShoDashiim kalaam. iti.
Meaning In English : (tathaa cha) And so, (uktam) it has been said —
(at cha) Whatever of (kaama-sukham) pleasure is on the satisfaction of desires (loke) in the world, (cha) and (yat) whatever of (mahat-sukham) greater happiness (divyam) on account of the acquisition of divine objects = subtle objects in this world, (ete) these both types of pleasures (na arhataH) do not come to (ShoDashiim) sixteenth (kalaam) part (triShNaakShaya-sukhasya iti) of pleasure-ness obtained from suppression of desires.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism result of contentment is explained. The Yogi who complies with contentment in mind, speech, and action in all ways, at all times, without any contraries, attains extreme happiness. In fact, the person complying with the contentment, after putting in his efforts, should not become happy with achievements and express grief on losses, nor should desire more than the things achieved. In this way, the devotee suppresses his desires by complying with contentment.
Seer Vyaasa said that the happiness achieved by the fulfillment of desires in this world or the greater happiness on achieving the divine objects is inferior to the happiness obtained from the suppression of desires. Swami Dayanand had compared the pleasure-ness of contentment with the pleasure-ness of salvation.
When the devotee expresses happiness on achievement of worldly enjoyments, then attachment increases in his mind. With the increase of attachment in the mind of the devotee, there is also a manifestation of aversion to the non-availability of those types of pleasures or means of hindrances for such pleasures; and in this way, the person involved in the attachment and aversion remains afflicted by Nescience. In this way, the person believing in pleasures by fulfillment of desires remains involved in the life-cycle of this world. So, SeerManu had clearly said —
na jaatu kaamaH kaamaanaamupabhogena shaamyati. Manusmriti 2.69.
i.e., by experiencing the desires, one cannot become satisfied, but the desires keep on increasing. In the same way, Bhartrihari had said —
triShNaa na jiirNaa vayameva jiirNaaH. Vairaagyashataka 7.
The person involved in the satisfaction of desires becomes old and powerless, but the desires do not cease to exist. So, the suppression of desires is said as the means of extreme happiness. As —
santoSham paramaasthaaya sukhaarthii sa.nyato bhavet.
santoShamuulam hi sukham duHkhamuulam viparyayaH. Manusmriti 4.12
The person desiring happiness should comply with contentment i.e., should not desire for more enjoyment, as contentment is the basis of happiness; and as against this, the desire-full-ness is the cause of pains. In the same way, ChaaNakya had said —
santoShaamrita-triptaanaam yatsukham shaantachetasaam.
na cha tad-dhanalubdhaanaamitashchetashcha dhaavataam. ChaaNakyaniiti 7.3.
The pleasure-ness achieved by the person who is complying with contentment and with a calm mind, (that pleasure-ness) cannot be achieved by the person who is putting efforts into attaining wealth = worldly enjoyment.
