| Sutra No : 43
In English:
Component Word : kaayendriyasiddhiH ashuddhikShayaat tapasaH.
Sutra in English : kaayendriyasiddhirashuddhikShayaattapasaH.43.
Meaning in English : (tapasaH) By performance of purificatory actions (ashuddhi-kShayaat) removal of impurities of body, mind, and organs take place which results in (kaaya-indriya-siddhiH) attainment of powers of the physical body and organs.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : By performance of aforesaid purificatory action, impurities of the body and senses are destroyed, resulting in their stability and desirelessness.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : nirvartyamaanameva tapo hinastyashuddhyaavaraNamalam. tadaavaraNamala-apagamaatkaayasiddhiraNimaadyaa. tathendriyasiddhirduuraachChravaNa-darshanaadyeti.
Meaning In English : (nirvrtyamaanam) Performance of (tapaH) purificatory action (eva) certainly (hinasti) destroys the (ashuddhya-aavaranamalam) veils of impurities of afflictions. (tat aavaraNa-mala-apagamaat) By the destruction of dirt of impurities of the mind (kaayasiddhiH) yogi achieves the attainments of the body (gross and subtle) named as (aNimaadyaa) aNimaa (= power of attenuation) and others. (tathaa) Similarly, (indriya-siddhiH) attainments of senses i.e., (duuraat shravaNa-darshanaadyaa iti) audience and visibility from distance are achieved.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism result of purificatory action is explained. Purificatory action is described in various scriptures as follows —
— Adopting reality, accepting the truth, speaking the truth, hearing the Vedic scriptures, controlling one's mind from vicious acts, controlling sense organs from evil acts and diverting to virtue acts, remaining calm by cessation of anger, etc., spreading the pure qualities of true knowledge, etc., performing Yajyas and with the company of intellectuals obtaining the knowledge of all objects like earth, heaven, sun, etc. and by the performance of Yoga, control of breath, worshipping the GOD only, are called purificatory actions. (Commentary of Dayanand Saraswati on Taittriiya Aaranyaka 10.8.1 - in Sanskaar-vidhi)
— Certainly, the study of Vedas is the highest purificatory action for the Braahamana = intellectual in this world. (Manusmriti 2.141)
— The intellectual, who has moved into the second phase of life i.e., got married and moved into family life, studies Vedas with full efforts daily, he is certainly performing purificatory action at full strength with his body. (Manusmriti 2.142)
— Performance of three types of control of breath (= external, internal, and total restraint) along with the repetition of "AUM" and the seven "bhuuH bhuvaH svaH mahaH janaH tapaH satyam" as per the procedure of scriptures is the highest purificatory action of the braahmaNa = intellectual desiring GOD. (Manusmriti 6.70)
The endurance of the pairs of opposites for performing all the above acts is purificatory action. In this way by performing purificatory action, the impurities and residual potencies of Nescience, existing in the mind of a yogi, get destroyed. SeerManu had mentioned the purity of the Soul also by purificatory action by saying —
"vidyaatapobhyaam bhuutaatmaa" (Manusmriti 5.109)
i.e., the Soul gets purified by knowledge and purificatory actions. So, by the destruction of the impurity of Nescience, which is the cause of bondage for the Soul with Matter, the mind becomes as pure as the Soul, and Yogi becomes able to attain salvation. (Ref - sattvapuruShayoH suddhi-saamye kaivalyamiti. Yoga 3.55).
Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had prescribed for the attainments of body and organs by the destruction of Nescience and its potencies. Seer Vyaasa had mentioned the power of attenuation etc. as the attainments of the body. Seer Patanjali had prescribed the attainments of attenuation etc. by mastery of gross objects in aphorism 3.44-45. It means that when the Yogi attains mastery of the gross objects as per the method of aphorism 3.44, then he attains the powers of attenuation, etc. These attainments are described in aphorism 3.45-46. And Seer Vyaasa had prescribed the attainments of powers of attenuation etc. by the performance of purificatory action. The secret for such advice is that only by destroying the impurities of Nescience one come in a position to achieve the powers of attenuation by having mastery of the gross objects. So, without destroying the impurities of Nescience by performing purificatory action, attainments of the body cannot be possible. The details of these attainments are explained in aphorism 3.45-46.
By the attainments of senses, Seer Vyaasa had prescribed the audience and visibility from a distance. Here attainment of senses should be understood with regard to the powers of senses which are part of the subtle body, not with reference to rooms of organs in the physical body. So, by attainments of senses, the power of senses becomes superior. By the power of distance visibility and distance audience, the devotee achieves subtlety of organs of hearing and seeing; i.e., he can hear the subtle words from far away as compared to normal power of hearing, this is the meaning of distance audience. The same is to be understood in the case of other organs. As Seer Patanjali had prescribed the attainment of higher power of hearing by Sanyama over the relation between the sky and the power of hearing in aphorism 3.41. In this way, the organs become So, superior that Yogi is able to grasp the respective objects of organs from a distance. The subtle powers of organs are also described by the attainments of pre-science, higher hearing, touch, vision, taste, and smell, in aphorism 3.36 by Seer Patanjali. So, by performing purificatory action, Yogi attains such ability that he can attain the powers of body and organs as above. The objects and methods of Sanyama for such attainments are described in the third chapter. On the basis of the inner testimony of this scripture, these attainments are not to be accepted as achievable merely by compliance with purificatory action.
