Sutra in English : sthirasukhamaasanam .46.
Meaning in English : (aasanam) Posture is that in which (sthira-sukham) body is steady comfortable and pleasureful.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : In which position the body and Soul are steady and comfortable, is called Posture. One should perform in the desired way. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : tadyathaa padmaasanam viiraasanam bhadraasanam svastikam daNDaasanam sopaashrayam parya~Nkam krau~nchaniShadanam hastiniShadanam-uShTraniShadanam samasa.msthaanam sthirasukham yathaasukham chetyevamaadiini.
Meaning In English : (tad-yathaa) Thus, for example, the Posture namely (padmaasanam) the Padmaasana, (viiraasanam) the Viiraasana, (bhadraasanam) the Bhadraasana, (svastikam) the Svastikaasana, (daNDaasanam) the Dandaasana, (sopaashrayam) the posture with support, (praya~Nkam) the Prayankaasana, (krau~nchaniShadanam) sitting like the bird Krauncha, (hasti-niShadanam) sitting like an elephant, (uShTraniShadanam) sitting like a camel, (samasa.nsthaanam) the samasthaanam, (sthira-sukham) cause steadiness and comfort-ability, (cha) and (yathaa-sukham) one should practice postures in which one can sit steadily and comfortably. (iti evam aadiini) And there are such other postures.
Vedic Commentary in English : In order to restrain the modifications of the mind, the devotee is to practice sitting in a particular Posture. The devotee should practice such a posture in which he can sit steadily, and comfortably without any problem for a long time. Activities of the body also become hindrances to the steadiness of the mind. When the devotee while sitting in a particular posture, does not control the activities of the body, then his mind automatically diverts toward those physical activities. So, in order to have the steadiness of mind, the devotee is to attain the steadiness of his body. So, Seer Patanjali had prescribed posture as the third accessory of Yoga.
While writing the commentary on this aphorism Seer Vyaasa had prescribed the Padmaasana, Viiraasana, etc. The most important point about these postures is that the devotee may practice any of the postures as per his liking, but the precondition is that his body should be steady in that posture comfortably and pleasurefully. In that posture the activities of the body should be ceased, So, that external movement of the physical body should not become a cause for the creation of any modification in the mind. The pleasure-ness of the posture means that there should not be any type of pain in the organs of the body while sitting for a long time in that posture. If the devotee feels pain while sitting for one or half hours in the posture, then there will not be a steadiness of posture and as a result, the steadiness of mind will not be there. The system of posture has been described in Geeta as follows —
yogi yu~njiita satatamaatmaanam rahasi shthitaH.
ekaakii yatachittatmaa niraashiiraparigrahaH.
shuchau deshe pratiShThaapya shthiramaasanamaatmanaH.
naatyuchchhritam naatiniicham chailaajinakushottaram.
tatraikaagram manaH kritvaa yatachittendriyakriyaH.
upavishyaasane yu~njyaadyogamaatmavishuddhaye.
samam kaayashirogriivam dhaarayannachalam shthiraH.
samprekShya naasikaagram svam dishashchaanavalokayan. Geeta 6.10-13.
i.e., by staying alone, controlling the mind and Soul, devoid of any modification other than the modification of GOD, without any attachment towards other objects, Yogi should continuously concentrate. The place which is even, the air is pure, neither too high nor too low, put some cloth, etc. there and control his mind by restraint of modifications of mind and organs, should concentrate for attaining the purity of Soul. Keep his head, neck, and body straight and steady, concentrate on the fore-nose, and sit steadily, and shall not see here and there.
So, the place of posture should be at an even place, where the air is pure, according to the state of the body. Seer Vyaasa had said for postures with support which means that posture with the support of anything. It means if there is any type of disease or defect in any particular organ of the body, and it is convenient to have the support of a wall, etc., then the devotee should adopt such means for steadiness of posture.
There is no particular rule for the posture, but the steadiness and pleasure-ness in the posture should be there. So, Seer Vyaasa had said "yathaasukham" i.e., one should practice such postures in which one can sit steadily and comfortably. The devotee mostly adopts Padmaasana or Siddhaasana for practice. Some people recommend "Shavaasana" in case of a particular disease in the body, but in this posture, one gets asleep So, it is not a useful posture for the practice of Yoga. If the devotee can avoid sleepiness in this posture, then it can be useful in particular situations. But the devotee should practice any postures of sitting mode only.
(Note: This aphorism contains posture names which are nouns. Hence these names are termed as it is.)
