Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 47
In English:
Component Word : prayatnashaithilyaanantasamaapattibhyaam.
Sutra in English : prayatnashaithilyaanantasamaapattibhyaam.47.
Meaning in English : By (prayatna-shaithilya) slackening of efforts and (ananta-samaapattibhyaam) thought transformation = taking the shape of infinite i.e., sky and GOD, steadiness in Posture is attained.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : bhavatiiti vaakyasheShaH. prayatnoparamaatsidhyatyaasanam yena naa~Ngamejayo bhavati. anante vaa samaapannam chittamaasanam nirvarttayatiiti.
Meaning In English : (bhavati iti vaakyasheShaH) The words "is attained" are part of aphorism. (aasanam) Posture is (sidhyati) attained (prayatna-uparamaat) by ceasing the movement of the body, i.e., (yena) by which (na bhavati) there remains no (a~Ngamejayo) shakiness in the body. (vaa) And when (chittam) the mind of the devotee (samaapannam) takes the shape of (anante) the infinite = sky or GOD, (aasanam) posture is (nirvarttayati iti) attained.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, two means of attaining the steadiness of postures are advised. 1 - slackening the efforts of the body; and 2 - thought transformation in infinite GOD. By adopting these means devotee is able to attain steadiness in posture.
Whichever posture is practiced by the devotee, his first duty, during the practice of that posture, is to stop all the external activities of body organs. He should not make any effort to grasp any external objects or attain any type of knowledge from the sense organs; i.e., opening and closing the eyes to see the external objects; having smell through the nose; listening to external sounds = music, etc. through ears; tasting anything through tongue; touching any objects through the body = hands, etc. For this, it is important to practice posture in a lonely and clean place where fresh air is also available. He should make such efforts that there should not be any type of movement or shivering in the body, since steadiness of posture cannot be maintained by such movement or shivering.
The second important means of attaining the steadiness of posture is thought transformation in the infinite. Bhoja had taken sky from the word infinite. Some other commentators, having belief in Puranas, had taken "sheShanaga" from the word infinite and advised thought transformation in that. But such a wrong conception has no room in Vedas. In fact, GOD alone is infinite and omnipresent; and next to GOD, the sky is considered infinite. So, acceptance of the sky as infinite by Bhoja is much better than any other imagination of the commentators of a later age.
GOD alone is termed as infinite since "na vidyate.anto.avadhiH-maryaadaa yasya tadanantam" i.e., ananta = infinite is one who has no limitations, boundaries, end, or dimensions. (Light of Truth - Chapter 1). When the devotee takes the shape as that of GOD and gets his mind totally involved in HIM, then steadiness of posture is attained. In fact, the mind gets related to various objects on account of the existence of excessive modifications. On the other hand, when the modifications are based on GOD, wherever the mind gets diverted it sees the presence of GOD there, then it becomes steady. So, from the word "infinite" GOD is to be taken as the base of thought transformation for the attainment of posture.
But the devotee does not become able to take the shape as that of GOD in the beginning. Such devotees should take the sky as infinite and can be successful in attaining the posture by taking shape as that of the sky. Since next to GOD, the sky alone is subtle, infinite, and shapeless; the devotee becomes able to concentrate his mind there, without any obstruction, by taking the shape of that.
