Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 49
In English:
Component Word : tasmin sati shvaasaprashvaasayoH gativichChedaH praaNaayaamaH.
Sutra in English : tasminsati shvaasaprashvaasayorgativichChedaH praaNaayaamaH.49.
Meaning in English : (tasmin sati) On attainment and establishment of stability of posture (gati-vichchhedaH) stoppage of movement (shvaasa-prashvaasayoH) of the inspiratory and expiratory (of breath) is (praaNaayaamaH) Regulation of Breath.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Swami Dayanand had written the following after the commentary of Vyaasa — "aasane samyak-siddhe krite baahyaabhyantara-gamanashiilasya vayoH-yuktyaa shanaiH shanaiH abhyaasena jayakaraNam-arthaat sthiriikritya gatyaabhaava-karaNam praaNaayaamaH." which means — On attainment of Posture, one should practice controlling the inward and outward natural movement of air, i.e., stoppage of movement of air (breath) is Regulation of Breath.
The air that comes in from outside is called inspiration and air that goes out from the stomach, or lungs is called expiration. Both of these are to be stopped with thought, the nostril should not be closed with the hand, but stoppage of these movements by knowledge is called Regulation of Breath.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : satyaasanajaye braahyasya vaayoraachamanam shvaasaH. kauShThyasya vaayorniHsaaraNam prashvaasaH. tayorgativichCheda ubhayaabhaavaH praaNaayaamaH.
Meaning In English : (sati aasanajaye) On attainment of posture, (gati-vichchhedaH) cessation of the natural movement of (tayoH) both (shvaasaH) inspiration, (aachamanam) in-taking of (baahyasya vaayoH) external air, and (prashvaasaH) expiration, (niHsaaraNam) throwing out the (vaayoH) air (kauShThyasya) of the stomach, i.e., (ubhaya-abhaavaH) cessation of both the activities (praaNaayaamaH) is called Regulation of Breath.
Vedic Commentary in English : Regulation of Breath is advised for the devotee after the attainment of stability of Posture. It means that the devotee should regulate his breath while sitting in a Posture. Regulation of Breath while moving here and there does not become a means for the concentration of the mind. The secret behind this is that - as the stability of Posture is important for the concentration of the mind, in the same way with the Regulation of Breath along with the posture alone, the devotee is able to achieve the ability for concentration. (Ref - dhaaraNaasu cha yogyataa manasaH. Yoga 2.53). It means till the external affairs of the physical body are not restrained, so how the ability of concentration of the mind can be attained by Regulation of Breath? So, Seer Patanjali had prescribed the attainment of posture before the success of Regulation of Breath.
Taking in the external air from the nostril is called inspiration, throwing out the air of the stomach through the nostril is called expiration, and stopping the natural movement of both these is Regulation of Breath. Swami Dayanand said in this regard that - "Both of these are to be stopped with thought, nostril should not be closed with hand, but stoppage of these movements by knowledge is called Regulation of Breath". It is clear from the above that after the stability of posture there should not be movement by hand for Regulation of Breath i.e. nostril should not be closed with hands. The inspiration and expiration should be stopped by knowledge, and such type of practice of stoppage of inspiration and expiration alone becomes helpful to attain Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive trances in the future. Otherwise, on holding the nostril by hand, the modifications of the mind become extroverted, and the devotee will not be able to attain the Cognitive trance even.
