Sutra in English : baahyaabhyantarastambhavRRittirdeshakaalasa.mkhyaabhiH paridRRiShTo diirghasuukShmaH.50.
Meaning in English : (baahya-abhyantra-stambhavrittiH) External, internal, and total restraint are (paridriShTaH) regulated by (desha-kaala-sa.nkhyaabhiH) place, time, and number (diirgha-suukShmaH) become long-duration and subtle.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Regulation of Breath is of four types i.e., external, internal, total restraint, and the fourth one is cross spheres of internal and external.
The four types of Regulation of Breath are as follows — when the breath comes out from inside by expiration, then stopping the breath outside, this is called the first Regulation of Breath (External). When it comes in from outside by inspiration, then stopping the breath inside, as much as possible, is called the second (=internal) Regulation of Breath. The third one is total restraint which means stopping the breath comfortably, as is where is, without taking in or throwing out. The performance of these results in purity of mind for the worship. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
First external means stopping the breath outside, second is internal which means stopping the breath inside and the third is total restraint i.e., stopping the breath at once, as is where is. (Light of Truth - Chapter 3)

Meaning In English : (yatra) Where (gati abhaavaH) cessation of motion of breath (prashvaasa-puurvakaH) follows expiration (saH) that is (baahyaH) external Regulation of Breath. (yatra) where (gati abhaavaH) cessation of motion of breath (shvaasa-puurvakaH) follows inspiration (saH) that is called (aabhyantraH) internal Regulation of Breath. (tritiiyaH) The third is (stambha-vrittiH) total restraint (yatra) where (ubhaya-abhaavaH) cessation of both i.e., inspiration and expiration (bhavati) take place (sakrit-prayatnaat) by a single effort. (yathaa) As (jalam) water (nyastam) thrown (tapte upale) on a heated stone (sa~Nkocham aapadyate) shrinks (sarvataH) from all sides, (tathaa) So, in this (gati abhaavaH) cessation of motion (dvayoH) of both the inspiration and expiration (yugapat iti) is done simultaneously.
(trayaH api ete) All three (paridriShTaaH) are regulated by (deshena) by place, as (iyaana deshaH) So, much space (viShaya) is occupied (asya iti) by this. Also, they are (paridriShTaaH) regulated (kaalena) by time (iti arthaH) this means they are (avachchhinnaaH) measured by (kShaNaanaam iyattaavadhaaraNena) ascertaining the seconds of their duration. They are also (paridriShTaaH) regulated (sa.nkhyaabhiH) by numbers, as (prathamaH) first (udghaataH) duration is (etaavadbhiH) of So, many (shvaasa-prashvaasaiH) inspiration and expiration; (tadvat) in the same way (dvitiiyaH) second (udghaataH) duration is (nigrihiitasya etaavadbhiH) of cessation of so many inspirations and expiration; and (evam) similarly (tritiiyaH) third. (evam) Similarly, it is (mriduH) mild, (evam madhyaH) it is middling, and (evam tiivraH) it is intense (iti sa.nkhyaa-paridriShTaH) this is regulation by numbers. (saH khalu ayam) These three types of Regulation of Breath (evam abhyastaH) practiced as above, (diirgha-suukShmaH) becomes long duration and subtle.
Vedic Commentary in English : There is the advice of "Regulation of Breath" in order to proceed on the path of Yoga properly. By the "Regulation of Breath," the devotee becomes able to perform the following accessories of Yoga (Ref - dhaaraNaasu cha yogyataa manasaH. Yoga 2.53, and further without the ability of concentration, meditation, and trance cannot be achieved.).
Four types of "Regulation of Breath" are advised for the devotee, and by the proper performance of these, he becomes able to attain concentration, meditation, and trance in sequence. In this aphorism, three types of "Regulation of Breath" are explained, which are as follows—
1. External — When the breath is stopped outside after expiration, is called external "Regulation of Breath". While performing this "Regulation of Breath" one should stop the breath as much as it can be done comfortably after air is taken in by the nostril. In this way, this is one "Regulation of Breath".
In this regard Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote in chapter 3 of Light of Truth — "Just as strong vomiting throws out food and water, similarly the breath should be forcibly thrown out and checked there as long as possible. When it is intended to throw out the breath, the pelvis should be kept pulled upward. So, the breath will remain out for a long time. This is the way to keep the breath out long. When there is a feeling of uneasiness, then the breath should be slowly drawn in. The above process should be repeated as per the capacity and desire. This should be accompanied by the recitation of the sacred syllable AUM in the mind. This conduces to the purification and firmness of the Soul and Mind."
In this way by proper practice on a daily basis, breath comes under the control of the devotee.
2. Internal — When the breath is stopped inside after inspiration, is called internal "Regulation of Breath". In this type, there is no need to pull upward the pelvis. But breath should be stopped as much as it could be held inside comfortably. In this way, this is one "regulation of breath".
3. Total restraint — In this "Regulation of Breath" both the inspiration and expiration are stopped; breath is stopped as is, where is by a single effort. In this regard, an example is given that as water is thrown on a heated stone, gets shrinks from all sides, So, is in this case. In fact, when the water is poured down on the plane it moves in all directions or towards a lower place but acts in a different way when thrown on a heated stone. In the same way, in this type, both the inspiration and expiration movements are stopped simultaneously. The breath is to be stopped as much as it can be done comfortably, after that normal movement is to be performed.
In this regard, Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote in the chapter on worship in Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumika— "Persons of immature mind practice Regulation of Breath by stopping the nostrils with the help of fingers or thumb. This practice is to be avoided by the wise and gentle. At the time of performing the regulation of breath, one should keep one's internal and external parts of the body non-agitated and relaxed which means all the modifications of the mind and activities of sense organs to be stopped and the mind is freed from evil acts like attachment, aversion, etc. and make steady all the parts of the body and be comfortable in the posture. With this pre-activity, he should practice the external, internal, and total restraint regulation of breath as explained above".
These three "Regulations of Breath" are regulated by space, time, and number.
1. Regulation by space — As per Seer Vyaasa the regulation by space is meant as — "so much space is occupied by this". Here space is of two types - internal space and external space. In the normal expiration, the expired air moves out up to 12 fingers from the nostril. By the regular practice of Regulation of Breath, the movement of expired air reduces continuously and it does not move out from the nostril. In the same way, while inspiration the inspired air moves toward the chest = lungs, keeping control of that movement is the regulation of internal space. In this way, it is to be seen that expired air and inspired air moved up to So, much space and so, much control had taken place with regard to its movement.
2. Regulation by time — Regulation of Breath by time means that the breath is ceased = controlled for So, much time. For this mental repetition of "AUM" or Gaayatri Hymn or Breath Hymn - "aum bhuuH, aum bhuvaH, aum svaH, aum mahaH, aum janaH, aum tapaH, aum satyam" is to be done. As the number of times the repetition increases, So, the time of Regulation of Breath increases.
3. Regulation by numbers — For Regulation of Breath by number, Seer Vyaasa said that - the first, second, and third duration of so many inspirations and expirations. With regard to the Regulation of Breath, the duration is explained as — the time taken by a normal person for one-time inspiration, and expiration is known as "maatraa". The first duration is equal to 12 "maatraa"; the second duration is equal to 24 "maatraa"; and the third duration is equal to 36 "maatraa". The devotee by increasing the Breath, in this way, reaches up to 12 maatraa, then to 24 maatraa, and lastly to the stage of 36 maatraa. The Regulation of Breath with one duration is called mild, with two durations is called middling and with 3 durations is called intense.
The Regulation of Breath, practiced in such a way, becomes long-duration and subtle. And such subtle and long-duration breath does not become a distraction or its companion for attaining the trance.
