Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 6
In English:
Component Word : dRRigdarshanashaktyoH ekaatmataa eva asmitaa.
Sutra in English : dRRigdarshanashaktyorekaatmatevaasmitaa.6.
Meaning in English : (asmitaa) Egoism is (ekaatmataa-iva) the appearance of identity (drig-darshana-shaktyoH) of the Soul = power of consciousness and the mind = instrumental power of seeing.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Egoism is the second affliction i.e., seeing the power of the Soul and mind as intermixed, considering the self as bigger than the ego, the behavior of such type is Egoism. When with true knowledge, ego is turned down, this affliction = egoism is destroyed, and then one accepts the qualities of virtue.
(Rigvedaadibhashyabhuumikaa - on emancipation)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : puruSho dRRikshaktirbuddhirdarshanashaktirityetayoreka-svaruupaapattir-ivaasmitaa klesha uchyate. bhoktRRibhogyashaktyoratyantavibhaktayor-atyantaasa.mkiirNayoravibhaagapraaptaaviva satyaam bhogaH kalpate. svaruupapratilambhe tu tayoH kaivalyameva bhavati kuto bhoga iti. tathaa choktam—‘buddhitaH param puruShamaakaarashiila-vidyaadibhirvibhaktama- pashyankuryaattatraa.a.atmabuddhim mohena iti .
Meaning In English : (puruShaH) The soul is (drik-shaktiH) the subjective power of consciousness i.e., achieving knowledge, and (buddhiH) the mind is (darshana-shaktiH) the instrumental power of seeing. (iti etayoH) Though these two are separate identities, (eka-svaruupaapattiH iva) the appearance of two, as if they are one = identical, (uchyate) is called as (asmitaa kleshaH) affliction named Egoism. (bhogaH) Enjoyment of pleasure-pain is (kalpate) rendered possible, when (bhoktri-bhogya-shaktyoH) the power of enjoyer, which is Soul = conscious power, and instrumental power = mind, which makes pleasure and pain available to the Soul, which is (atyanta-vibhaktayoH) quite distinct, and (atyanta-asa~NkiirNayoH) different from each other, (avibhaaga-praaptau iva satyaam) are looked upon as these two are one = identical. And when, however, (tayoH svaruupa-pratilambhe) their separate = distinct natures have been understood, (tu) then (kaivalyam eva bhavati) this distinct knowledge results in the salvation of Soul; and (kuto bhogaH iti) how then can there be an enjoyment of pleasure-pain. (tathaa cha uktam) And so, it has been said that (apashyan) Not knowing (puruSham) the Soul who is (param) superior and subtle (buddhitaH) than mind (vibhaktam) to be different therefrom (aakaara-shiila-vidyaadibhiH) in nature, character and knowledge, a common man, (mohena) by illusion and nescience, (kuryaat) understand (aatmabuddhim) the notion of self (tatra iti) in that mind (in other words he considers mind as conscious = Soul).
Vedic Commentary in English : After explaining Nescience, first of all, the nature and form of Egoism are described, out of the afflictions generated on account of Nescience —
The soul is conscious in nature, who acquires knowledge and experiences the material enjoyments made available to him by the mind. He is pure in nature — devoid of properties of three Qualities, unchangeable, conscious, eternal, always existing, and uncommitted. On the other hand, a mind, which is of different nature and properties than that of the Soul — i.e., a means to acquire knowledge, under the control of the Soul, inanimate, the first product of Matter, a product with the dominance of Illumination Quality, however, contains the Qualities of Activity and Inertia also, cause of Egoism, the changeable and material cause of products in sequence, and is transient = work product. Both these objects are quite different in properties, nature, and form and do not intermix with each other at any stage. Both do not adopt or take the form of others and even cannot do so. So, the characteristics of the Soul cannot come to mind, and similarly, the properties of the mind cannot be imposed on the Soul. In such circumstances, the appearance of both the soul and mind as identical is "Egoism" which is termed as affliction. In fact, on the appearance of these two as one, the Soul receives the experience of pain and pleasure. By having the discriminative knowledge of both objects, the Soul achieves salvation.
On being affected by the "Egoism" affliction, one imposes the qualities of mind in himself = Soul, and due to ego, he behaves like "ahamasmi" = "I am this or I am that". One normally behaves like that "I am calm", "I am knowledge-full", "I am angry", "I am ignorant", "I am affected by lust-ness", "I am stupid" etc. By such behavior, one considers himself happy, sad, full of knowledge, worth, worldly enjoyments, powerful, etc. and considers himself as better than others or best among human beings. He considers himself the most capable person even though he has little capability in a field. Due to such ignorance and illusion, one does harm to oneself, and others also.
Because of Nescience, only one considers the qualities of Matter and Mind as the qualities of himself = Soul, and on account of such qualities, he behaves accordingly and considers such behavior as natural and never tries to think otherwise.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati had advised true knowledge for the removal of this defect. On cognizing the real form of the Soul and mind, the ego is turned down and this affliction named "Egoism" also ends.
