Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 51
In English:
Component Word : baahyaabhyantaraviShayaakShepii chaturthaH.
Sutra in English : baahyaabhyantaraviShayaakShepii chaturthaH.51.
Meaning in English : (chaturthaH) The fourth is that (baahya-abhyantara-viShayaakShepii) which crosses the spheres of the internal and external.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The fourth type of Regulation of Breath is when the breath comes out from inside, then it is to be stopped outside somewhat, and when it goes in from outside, then it is to be stopped inside somewhat. This is called crossing the spheres of internal and external. (Rigvedaadibhashyabhuumika - on Worship)
The fourth Regulation of Breath is that when the breath tends to come out from inside, then draw the breath inside forcibly, and when the breath tends to go inside, then throw it forcibly outside. (Light of Truth - Chapter 3)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : deshakaalasa.mkhyaabhirbaahyaviShayaparidRRiShTa aakShiptaH. tathaabhyantaraviShayaparidRRiShTa aakShiptaH. ubhayathaa diirgha-suukShmaH. tatpuurvako bhuumijayaatkrameNobhayorgatyabhaavash-chaturthaH praaNaayaamaH. tRRitiiyastu viShayaanaalochito gatyabhaavaH sakRRidaarabdha eva deshakaalasa.mkhyaabhiH paridRRiShTo diirgha-suukShmaH. chaturthastu shvaasaprashvaasayorviShayaavadhaaraNaat-krameNa bhuumijayaadubhayaakShepapuurvako gatyabhaavashchaturthaH praaNaayaama ityayam visheShaH.
Meaning In English : The sphere of (baahyaviShayaH) external Regulation of Breath (paridriShTaH) regulated = mastered (desha-kaala-sa.nkhyaabhiH) by the measurement of space, time, and number (aakShiptaH) is crossed by regular violation of its movement. (tathaa) Similarly, the sphere of (aabhyantara-viShayaH) internal Regulation of Breath (paridriShTaH) regulated = mastered (desha-kaala-sa.nkhyaabhiH) by the measurement of space, time, and number (aakShiptaH) is crossed by regular violation of its movement. (ubhayathaa) Both the internal and external Regulation of Breath, So, practiced, (diirgha-suukShmah) become long and subtle. (tat-puurvakaH) By the practice of both, (krameNa) in sequence (bhuumi-jayaat) of attainment of mastery of the "State" (gati-abhaavaH) on cessation of (ubhayoH) both = inspiration and expiration, (chaturthaH) fourth type of (praaNaayaamaH) Regulation of Breath takes place.
(tritiiyaH tu) In the case of the third, (viShaya-anaalochitaH) external and internal spheres are not considered, and (gati-abhaavaH) cessation of movement of inspiration and expiration (sakridaarabdha eva) takes place with one single effort, and (paridriShTaH) measured (desha-kaala-sa.nkhyaabhiH) by space, time and number (diirgha-suukShmaH) become long and subtle. (chaturthaH tu) In the case of the fourth type of Regulation of Breath (shvaasa-prashvaasayoH viShaya-avadhaaraNaat) the spheres of inspiration and expiration are ascertained, (bhuumi-jayaat) on mastering the different "States" (krameNa) in sequence (gati-abhaavaH) cessation of movement of (ubhayaakShepa-puurvakaH) both the inspiration and expiration by violation of these, (chaturthaH praaNaayaamaH iti) is the fourth type of Regulation of Breath. (iti ayam visheShaH) It is its distinguish-ness.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, the method of the fourth type of "Regulation of Breath" is explained. Seer Vyaasa said that the external Regulation of Breath, mastered by space, time, and number, is crossed by regular violation of its movement. In the same way, the internal Regulation of Breath, mastered by space, time, and number, is crossed by regular violation of its movement. In this way by checking the movement of both and on cessation of inspiration and expiration, the fourth type of Regulation of Breath takes place. The meaning of crossing the breath is clear from the wording of Swami Dayanand i.e while performing the external regulation of breath when the breath tends to go inside, then throw it forcibly outside and not permit it to go inside; and while performing the internal regulation of breath, when the breath tends to come out from inside, then draw the breath inside forcible and not permit it to go outside. By performing in this way, the fourth type of Regulation of Breath takes place.
Swami Dayanand further wrote in this regard after the commentary of Seer Vyaasa in Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa as follows —
The Regulation of Breath which crosses both spheres is called the fourth, which is as follows — "when the air within the stomach tries to go out at the first moment, one should fix one's attention on it and should eject the breath outside and stop it there. When the breath from outside tries to enter the body, then at the first moment one should receive it into the body as gradually as one can and stop it there comfortably as much as possible. When both types of regulations are practiced constantly, then with stoppage of movement of the breath of inspiration and expiration, the fourth type is performed. The third type of regulation does not depend on the practice of internal and external regulation of breath; in it, the breath is stopped in whatever region it happens to be at the moment. In it, one should act strongly for this Regulation of Breath like a person who is startled at the sight of a wonderful object".
It is clear from the above that for performing the third type of Regulation of Breath, there is no need to practice internal and external Regulation of Breath, but for performing the fourth type of Regulation of Breath, the practice of both the internal and external Regulation of Breath is required. Since the fourth type of Regulation of Breath cannot be practiced without the proper practice of internal and external Regulation of Breath. This is the distinguish-ness of the fourth type of Regulation of Breath.
The fourth type of Regulation of Breath also becomes long and subtle when measured by space, time, and number. In fact, all four types of Regulation of Breath become long and subtle when measured by space, time, and number. The performance of the fourth type of Regulation of Breath requires the highest level of effort and by its practice, the breath comes under the control of the devotee. The benefit of its success is explained, by Swami Dayanand Saraswati, in the following words —
"In this way, Regulation of Breath leads to the subjugation of the mind and senses. This process increases strength and energy and so, sharpens the intellect so that it can easily apprehend the most abstruse and subtle problems. This helps the development of the vital fluid (semen) in the man's body, which in turn is productive of firm strength, courage, control of senses and acquisition of the knowledge of all sciences in no time." (Chapter 3 - Light of Truth)
(Note: For understanding the explanation of the next two aphorisms, one should again go through the commentary on aphorism 1.34).
