Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 52
In English:
Component Word : tataH kShiiyate prakaashaavaraNam.
Sutra in English : tataH kShiiyate prakaashaavaraNam.52.
Meaning in English : (tataH) By the practice of Regulation of Breath (prakaasha-aavaraNam) covers of knowledge, i.e., nescience, false knowledge, etc. (kShiiyate) are destroyed.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : By the practice of Regulation of Breath, the false knowledge, which is the cover of discriminative knowledge required for the realization of GOD, becomes weaker and weaker in the mind of the Yogi. These four are to be practiced in order to attain the purity of the mind for its stability in worship.
In this way, by the practice of Regulation of Breath, a veil of ignorance, over true discrimination of the Soul, is destroyed regularly and the light of wisdom increases accordingly. (Rigvedaadi-bhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
By thus counteracting both the inspiration and expiration, movement of both is stopped and control of breath leads to the subjugation of the mind and senses. This process increases strength and energy and so, sharpens the intellect so that it can easily apprehend the most abstruse and subtle problems. This helps the development of the vital fluid (semen) in the man's body, which in turn is productive of firm strength, courage, control of senses, and acquisition of the knowledge of all sciences in no time. Females should also perform Yoga likewise. (Light of Truth - Chapter 3)
When a man performs Regulation of Breath, every impurity is removed in quick succession and the light of knowledge dawns upon him. The inner light of the Soul goes on increasing until salvation is achieved. (Light of Truth - Chapter 3)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : praaNaayaamaanabhyasyato.asya yoginaH kShiiyate vivekaj~na-anaavaraNiiyam karma. yattadaachakShate—mahaamohamayenendrajaalena prakaashashiilam sattvamaavRRitya tadevaakaarye niyu~Nkta iti. tadasya prakaashaavaraNam karma sa.msaaranibandhanam praaNaayaamaabhyaasaad durbalam bhavati pratikShaNam cha kShiiyate. tathaa choktam—tapo na param praaNaayaamaattato vishuddhirmalaanaam diiptishcha j~naanasyeti.
Meaning In English : (karma) The actions affected by afflictions, their residual potencies, and the cause of such actions i.e., nescience, etc. of (asya) this (yoginaH) Yogi = devotee, (viveka-j~naana-aavaraNiiyam) which are covers of the discriminative knowledge, (kShiiyate) are destroyed (abhyasyataH) as he practices (praaNaayaamaan) Regulation of Breath. (yat tat) It is what (aachakShate) they say — (indra-jaalena) "By the magic panorama, (mahaamoha-mayena) the attachment (aavritya) covers up (sattvam) the mind, (prakaasha-shiilam) which is luminous by nature, (tadeva) that afflicted action and its residual potencies (niyu~Nkta) direct the person towards (akaarye iti) the restricted and un-prescribed actions which are vice".
(tat karma) This afflicted action and its residual potencies (asya) of the yogi (prakaasha-aavaraNam) which covers up the true knowledge and (sa.nsaara-nibandhanam) binds him to the vicious cycle of life and death, (bhavati) become (durbalam) weak, (praaNaayaama-abhyaasaat) by the practice of Regulation of Breath, (prati-kShaNam) every moment (cha) and (kShiiyate) is destroyed. (tathaa cha) And so, (uktam) has been said — "There is (na) no (tapaH) purificatory action (param) better than (praaNaayaamaat) the Regulation of Breath; (tataH) by that (malaanaam) impurities of the mind are (vishuddhiH) are removed (cha) and (j~naanasya diiptiH iti) light of knowledge improves".
Vedic Commentary in English : When the devotee becomes able to make the breath long and subtle by the proper practice of Regulation of Breath, then by the power of Regulation of Breath, the cover of discriminative knowledge in his mind, in the form of acts of nescience and false knowledge, get weakened. In this state, not only do the acts of nescience and false knowledge get weakened, but the nescience which is a cause of such acts also gets weakened, and along with it the residual potencies of such acts also get weakened. Hence all the factors which are causes of covering the intellectual modifications of the mind, get weakened. Here Seer Vyaasa used the word "the magic panorama" which means that the object is shown in some other form than that of its original form. So, the appearance of pleasure-ness in the objects of this world which are a cause of pains of consequence, anxiety, and habituation, is the magic panorama. The acts caused by nescience, just like the magic panorama, by creating attachment and illusion towards the objects of this world, and creating such type of potencies, keep the person involved in the non-actable acts. The non-actable acts include all types of vices; non-prescribed acts in the scriptures; prohibited acts in the scriptures; virtue performed on being inclined by attachment; and all types of mixed-up acts (= mixtures of vice and virtue). Such types of acts, become the cover of intellectual modifications of the mind and keep the person involved in the life-cycle of this world.
For the cessation of this cover, Regulation of Breath is said as one of the means in the Vedas and Vedic scriptures. Through the practice of Regulation of Breath, the cover of discriminative knowledge gets weakened. This cover does not get destroyed by the Regulation of Breath, but it gets weakened. The cessation of afflictions and acts takes place after the achievement of the Cloud-of-virtue Trance, not before that stage. The benefits of Regulation of Breath, on the basis of Vedic scriptures, had been explained in our commentary on aphorism 1.34. Seer Vyaasa had declared the Regulation of Breath as superior Purificatory Action also. In this regard, the following wordings of SeerManu are to be seen —
praaNaayaamaa braahmaNasya trayo.api vidhivatkritaaH.
vyaahritipraNavaiH-yuktaa viGYeyam paramam tapaH.
dahyante dhyaayamaanaanaam dhaatuunaam hi yathaa malaaH.
tathendriyaaNaam dahyante doShaaH praaNasya nigrahaat.
praaNaayaamaiH-dahed-doShaan-dhaaraNaabhiH-cha kilviSham.
pratyaahaareNa sa.nsargaan-dhyaanenaaniishvaraan-guNaan. Manu 6.70-72.
It is required for the anchorite = intellectual (devotee wishing to have the knowledge of GOD) to practice the Regulation of Breath, as much as possible, along with the repetition of seven hymns (namely aum bhuuH, aum bhuvaH, aum svaH, aum mahaH, aum janaH, aum tapaH, aum satyam), but at least three Regulation of Breath should be performed. This is the superior purificatory action of this intellectual. As the impurities of metal are destroyed by burning and melting, So, by the Regulation of Breath impurities of the mind and organs get destroyed. So, the anchorites should destroy the defects and impurities of self, mind, and organs by Regulation of Breath, vices by concentration, defects of association by abstraction, qualities of worldly affairs i.e., pleasure-ness, sadness, and nescience, etc. by meditation.
In this way by the practice of Regulation of Breath defects get weakened, afflictions-actions-potencies get weakened, and as a result, the light of wisdom increases in the mind.
