In English:
Component Word : sukhaanushayii raagaH.
Sutra in English : sukhaanushayii raagaH.7.
Meaning in English : (raagaH) Attachment is (sukha-anushayii) sequential attraction to pleasure.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The third affliction is attachment i.e., whatever pleasure we experience in this world, that creates an impression in the mind, and by remembering these pleasure potencies = impressions, one hankers after means for pleasure, this is called Attachment. When one realizes that everything is achievable and separable, and these two acts take place in sequence i.e., whatever is achieved will be destroyed = separated, and whatever is separated can be achieved later on, then this Attachment ends = removed. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on emancipation)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : sukhaabhij~nasya sukhaanusmRRitipuurvaH sukhe tatsaadhane vaa yo gardhastRRiShNaa lobhaH sa raaga iti.
Meaning In English : (yaH gardhaH) The desire to possess, (triShNaa) the thirst for and (lobhaH) hankering after (sukhe) pleasure (vaa) and (tat-saadhane) the means thereof, (sukha-anusmritipuurvaH) preceded by the remembrance of pleasure (sukhaabhij~nasya) in one who has enjoyed it, (sa raagaH iti) is Attachment.
Vedic Commentary in English : The most - gross defects of Nescience are Attachment and Aversion, which are the cause of bondage for the Soul. The Soul remains affected by the strong afflictions of Attachment and Aversion in his endless journey of life-cycle since eternity.
When one experiences pleasure from any object or means, such experience creates potencies of pleasure in his mind. Whenever there is a memory on account of such potencies, he desires = hankers after those objects = means of pleasure to acquire them again. This greed = thirst to acquire such means of pleasure again is known as Attachment. So, pleasure is the cause of Attachment (sukhaat raagaH. VaisheShika Philosophy 6.2.10), and Attachment is also created by engrossment in worldly enjoyments (tanmayatvaat cha. VaisheShika Philosophy 6.2.11).
This Attachment and its opposite Aversion are the gross defects, which are born from the root cause of Nescience. Every person gets bonded in this world due to attachment towards the existing = available, acquired, or acquirable animate and inanimate objects of enjoyment. Mother, Father, Spouse, children, friends, etc. are examples of animate means of enjoyment; and land, property, wealth, etc. are examples of inanimate means of enjoyment. As much pleasure = happiness is enjoyed from a particular mean, So, much is the level of Attachment towards such objects = means of enjoyment. Aversion, the opposite of Attachment, is also related to this, i.e., one also has the feeling of Aversion towards the means = persons who are obstacles to such worldly enjoyments. This is the principle of our saints that as much Attachment is there towards any means of enjoyment, So, much Aversion also exists in our mind towards the obstacles of such means. So, SeerKapila had said —
raagaviraagayoH yogaH shriShTi. Saankhya 2.9.
This creation is for the behavior of Attachment and Aversion. One has an ‘Attachment’ to one thing and Aversion to another; similarly, if there is Aversion, for one thing, there is also an Attachment to another thing. And due to Attachment and Aversion existing in the mind, a person loses his liberty —
na kaamachaaritvam raagopahate shukavat. Saankhya 4.25.
i.e., due to Attachment, one does not have the liberty to leave the path of vice and adopt the path of virtue; as a parrot bonded in the cage cannot fly according to his wish; similarly, the person bonded in the cage of Attachment does not remain independent for performing vice-virtue. Due to Attachment, he moves on the path of vice and generates the afflicted vehicle of actions for himself.
So, on account of the Attachment, one gets affected by a number of defects, which are explained, by SeerKapila, below —
na malina chetasya-upadesha-biija-praroho.ajavat. Saankhya 4.29.
Seeds of advice of knowledge, desirelessness, and virtue do not sprout in the mind affected by Attachment. As the advice of SeerVashishtha was not fruitful for King Aja, who had to have an intense Attachment to his wife. Knowledge does not last long in the mind, which has an Attachment to worldly enjoyment. Not to speak of knowledge, ever there is no glimpse of knowledge in such mind —
naabhaasa-maatraamapi malina-darpaNavat. Saankhya 4.30.
There is no glimpse of advice of knowledge and desirelessness in the mind affected by Attachment, as one is not able to see his image in the dirty mirror. Even sometimes there is an adverse effect of such advice —
na tajjasyaapi tadruupataa pankajavat. Saankhya 4.31.
There is no proper fructification of advice of knowledge in the mind affected by Attachment, and that too does not give the required results; as even the best seed sowed in the slime does not sprout properly. Sometimes there is the opposite effect of advice of virtue in the mind affected by Attachment, and the person starts performing in the opposite direction.
In this regard, it must be understood that Attachment never calms down by enjoying worldly enjoyments. SeerKapila said —
na bhogaat raagashaantiH-munivat. Saankhya 4.27.
The desires of the persons cannot be satisfied; Attachment cannot be calmed down by experiencing worldly enjoyment. As Soubhari muni had experienced, on account of Attachment, worldly enjoyments of the married life, after leaving the life of renunciation. Even after enjoying married life for a long time, his Attachment to worldly enjoyment had not calmed down. So, in the end, he said —
aamrityuto naiva manorathaanaamanto.asti viGYaatam-idam mayaadya.
manorathaasakti-parasya chittam na jaayate vai paramaartha-sa~Ngi.
i.e., I come to know today that desires do not end even till death. The persons having an Attachment to the worldly enjoyments in the mind, do not move on the path of self-renunciation and spiritual knowledge. In this regard, SeerManu had also declared —
na jaatu kaamaH kaamaanaam-upabhogena shaamyati.
haviShaa kriShNavartmeva bhuuya eva-abhivardhate. Manu 2.69.
It is certain that as the fire increases by putting in oil and other flammable objects in it, So, by experiencing the worldly enjoyments desires do not end, but keep on increasing. So, the person should remain away from worldly enjoyments = i.e., should remain unattached from these.
So, for remaining away from the Attachment, one should adopt the following means as far as possible —
1. bahubhiH-yoge virodho raagaadhibhiH kumaariisha.nkhavat. Saankhya 4.9.
While coming into contact with several people, the possibility of contradiction takes place, since the other person’s mind has the potencies of Attachments; as the small jingling bells in the feet of a girl sound by coming into contact with one another and even brake-down. So, the devotee should reside in solitude in order to remain away from Attachment and Aversion, etc. Similarly, a common person should also avoid contact with many persons, otherwise, they can never remain away from Attachment, etc.
2. Swami Dayanand Saraswati had advised the mean for removal of Attachment as - "When one realizes that everything is achievable and separable, and these two acts take place in sequence i.e., whatever is achieved will be destroyed = separated and whatever is separated can be achieved later on, then this attachment ends = removed", i.e when one knows that whatever means of enjoyment = pleasure are achieved, their separation is must in due course of time, and these are not my targets. In this way, these means also keep on increasing and decreasing in this life. These were not mine before my birth and will belong to others after my death. With such type of knowledge, Attachment calms down.
3. doShadarshanaat-ubhayoH. Saankhya 4.28.
SeerKapila advised that by knowing the defects of the "Soul as experiencer" and "Matter as experienceable object", Attachment calms down. As the defects of an experiencer are — the accumulation of afflictive potencies, rebirth, coming into the womb for the next birth, fear of death, experiencing pains in various life-states, etc. As defects of enjoyable objects are — gaining form, getting changed, instability, pain on getting destroyed, non-satisfaction on experience, and pain to other living beings, etc.
By seeing the defects in this way, Attachment calms down. Seer Vyaasa had also said in his commentary to aphorism 2.30 — "viShayaaNaam-arjana-rakShaNa-kShaya-sa.nga-hi.nsaa-doShadarshanaat-asviikaraNam" i.e., one should not accept external objects for experience on seeing the defects of earning, preservation, destruction, attachment, and violence.
4. One other means for calming down the Attachment is concentration = stability of mind — raagopahatiH-dhyaanam (Saankhya 3.30) i.e., the mean for cessation of Attachment towards the world, and desire of worldly experiences is concentration.
So, the devotee should resort to these means for the removal of the Attachment.
