Component Word : duHkhaanushayii dveShaH.
Sutra in English : duHkhaanushayii dveShaH.8.
Meaning in English : (dveShaH) Aversion is (duHkha-anushayii) sequential repulsion from pain.

(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on emancipation)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : duHkhaabhij~nasya duHkhaanusmRRitipuurvo duHkhe tatsaadhane vaa yaH pratigho manyurjighaa.msaa krodhaH sa dveShaH.
Meaning In English : (pratighaH) The repulsion, (manyuH) the anxiety of mind, (jighaa.nsaa) wish for removal = destruction, and (krodhaH) the anger at (duHkhe) pain (vaa) or (tat-saadhane) the means thereof (yaH) which stick in the mind in consequence of the feeling of pain, (duHkhaabhij~nasya) in case of a person who has felt the pain (duHkha-anusmriti-puurvaH) preceded by the remembrance of pain, (sa dveShaH) is Aversion.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali had given the form of Aversion. When a person experiences pain in his life, then the potencies of that pain get generated in his mind. Such a person, on account of the memory of the adverse experience of worldly objects or their means, wants to remain away from such objects and their means. Whenever there is a reoccurrence of such experiences in his life, or there is a possibility of reoccurrence of such experiences, then there is the generation of adverse feelings towards those adverse objects and their means which are the cause of pain. This adverse feeling is known as Aversion. In this circumstance, one behaves in the following ways towards the persons = objects which cause pains —
1. Have the feeling of retaliation and retaliate as much as possible;
2. Have anger in his mind, have the feeling of counter-violence;
3. Want to destroy the means of providing pain, and destroy; similarly want to hurt or kill the living beings who are the cause of pains;
4. Perform anger physically.
These four types of reactions impure the inner self, and the mind of the person, and keep him involved in the endless life-cycle by adding the afflictive potencies in his mind.
Aversion is also said as property of Soul by SeerGautama — "ichchha-dveSha-prayatna-sukha-duHkha-GYaanaani-aatmano li.ngam" Nyaaya 1.1.10. i.e., wish, aversion, effort, pleasure, pain, and knowledge are the properties of the Soul. One has a natural wish to remain away from the pain. Seer Patanjali had called the wish of remaining away from the pain and its means on account of residual potencies generated after the experience of pain, as Aversion, which is generated on the existence of Nescience. The wish to remain away from pain is to be understood in the following way —
1. One on the performance of desirelessness and discrimination, by knowing the destruction-ness of products of Matter; considering the Matter and its products as inanimate, their utility for the Soul for achieving experience and salvation; knowing the pains to be receivable on account of experience-able objects; knowing the life-cycle = life-death-life-cycle as a cause of pains; puts his efforts for cognizance of Soul and GOD in order to come out from this life-cycle.
In this way, one adopts the path of salvation, on account of the wish to remove the pains and on knowing the defects of the conjunction of the Soul with the Matter and its products. But in this situation, there is no repulsion, anxiety, anger, etc. in his mind. The wish to remain away from pains, generated on account of knowledge of the reality of the material world, is not Aversion but is generated on account of knowledge of the defects of these material objects. Such type of wishes on account of knowing the defects of Matter are the natural property of the Soul. But such a type of wish (aversion) cannot exist without real knowledge of the objects.
2. Aversion on account of worldly pains is incidental, which takes place towards the hindrances for the enjoyment of material worldly pleasures or on the means causing worldly pains and obstructions. This type of Aversion is caused because of Nescience, and a person afflicts his residual potencies by having anger, repulsion, anxiety of mind, etc., and as a result becomes more deeply involved in the life-death-life-cycle.
Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa aim at this second type of Aversion which is caused on account of Nescience and is avoidable. This has a deep relation with the Attachment. By removal of the Attachment, this Aversion is also removed. So, the means of removal of Attachment are equally helpful for the removal of Aversion also.
If the first kind of desire to remain away from pain is also said as avoidable, then that position will not be favorable for the persons who wish to achieve salvation. While explaining the form of Desirelessness Seer Vyaasa had said — "heya-upaadeya-shuunyaa vashikaarasa.nGYaa vairaagyam" (aphorism 1.15) i.e., the state of mind with consciousness of its supremacy, having no feeling of Aversion and/or Attachment towards all such objects, is called Desirelessness. So, the mind affected by Aversion is not capable of achieving trance. In such a position, on non-achievement of trance, one cannot have cognizance of Soul and GOD.
१. प्रतिकार करने का भाव करता और यथासम्भव प्रतिकार करता;
२. मानसिक रूप से क्रोध करता, प्रतिहिंसा करने का आवेश उत्पन्न होता;
३. दुःख प्रदान करने वाले साधनों को नष्ट करना चाहता, नष्ट करता; और इसी प्रकार दुःख देने वाले प्राणियों को मारने की इच्छा करता और मारता;
