Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 9
In English:
Component Word : svarasavaahii viduShaH api tathaa ruuDhaH abhiniveshaH.
Sutra in English : svarasavaahii viduSho.api tathaa ruuDho.abhiniveshaH.9.
Meaning in English : (svarasavaahii) Followed by its own potency of the earlier birth and (tathaa ruuDhaH) established in all the same way (api) even (viduShaH) in the learned, is (abhiniveshaH) the Fear of Death.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Fear of Death is the fifth affliction. All living beings wish to live forever in the present body i.e., not to die; this wish is the result of the experience of previous birth, and this proves the previous births. Since even the small living being has the Fear of Death, so does the form of affliction, which is equally exhibited in the learned and other living beings. This affliction will be removed when man realizes that the Soul, GOD, and Matter = the material cause of the universe, are immortal objects, and the formation and deformation of material things are ending in nature. With the removal of afflictions, the Soul achieves salvation.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on emancipation)
Seer Patanjali had established the doctrine of rebirth in Yoga scripture as follows - Each living being has a natural wish that he always remains happy and never dies, further no one wishes to die. This wish cannot be there in the mind of a living being without the existence of previous birth. This is called Fear of Death, which exists even in the small living being. This behavior proves the doctrine of previous births.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on rebirth).
Vyaasa Commentary in English : sarvasya praaNina iyamaatmaashiirnityaa bhavati maa na bhuuvam bhuuyaasamiti. na chaananubhuutamaraNadharmakasyaiShaa bhavatyaatmaashiiH. etayaa cha puurvajanmaanubhavaH pratiiyate. sa chaayamabhiniveshaH kleshaH svarasavaahii kRRimerapi jaatamaatrasya pratyakShaanumaanaagamairasambhaavito maraNatraasa uchCheda-dRRiShTyaatmakaH puurvajanmaanubhuutam maraNaduHkham-anumaapayati. yathaa chaayamatyantamuuDheShu dRRishyate kleshastathaa viduSho.api vij~naatapuurvaaparaantasya ruuDhaH. kasmaat a samaanaa hi tayoH kushalaakushalayor-maraNaduHkhaanubhavaadiyam vaasaneti.
Meaning In English : (sarvasya praaNina) In all living beings (iyam aatmaashiiH) this self-benediction (nityaa bhavati) always exists that (maa na bhuuvam) "Would that I was never to cease, (bhuuyaasam iti) may I live on". (cha) And (aiShaa aatmaashiiH) this self-benediction (na bhavati) cannot exist in him (ananubhuuta-maraNa-dharmakasya) who had not experienced the nature of death in previous birth. (cha) And (etayaa) by this wish (puurva-janma-anubhavaH) the experience of the former life (pratiiyate) is inferred. (cha) And (sa ayam) this is (abhiniveshaH kleshaH) the affliction of 'Fear of Death' (svarasavaahii) flowed by its own potency, that (krimeH api) even a worm (jaatamaatrasya) just born, who (asambhaavitaH) had not experienced the (uchchheda-driShTyaatmakaH) devastating (maraNatraasaH) Fear of Death in the present life even by (pratyaksha-anumaana-aagamaiH) perceptive, inferential and verbal knowledge, but fears from death, (anumaapayati) leads to the inference that (maraNa-duHkham) the pain of death had been (puurva-janma-anubhuutam) experienced in the former life.
(cha) And (yathaa) as (ayam kleshaH) this affliction (drishyate) is found existing (atyantamuuDheShu) in the extremely ignorant, (tathaa) So, (api) also (ruuDhaH) is established (viduShaH) in the mind of wise = intellectual who (vij~naata-puurva-aparaantasya) have come to know both the starting and finishing end of life. (kasmaat) Why does this affliction also exist in the mind of the wise? (hi) Since (iyam vaasanaa) this residual potency (maraNa-duHkha-anubhavaad) made from the experience of the pain of death is (samaanaa) common to (tayoH) both of them i.e., (kushala-akushalyoH iti) the wise and the ignorant.
Vedic Commentary in English : Every living being (Soul), who has gone through various endless life-states since eternity, in the universe, on account of Nescience, has received the pains of death at the end of every life. So, he has experienced the pains of death in every life-state since eternity. These pains of death are available in his mind permanently as residual potencies. Because of these residual potencies only, he does not want to receive the pains of death in the present life. He wishes "Would that I were never to cease, may I live on" and such a situation should not come that "I do not exist". In fact, such a wish in living beings, other than human beings, takes place on account of residual potencies; and in the case of a human being such wish takes place on account of Nescience along with residual potencies. This is called Fear of Death. This is his Nescience that he does not consider himself as a separate conscious entity, that is different from the physical body; he considers the development of the physical body as his own development and considers the destruction of the physical body as his own destruction. In the same way, he considers the prosperity of property, land, family, etc. as his own = Soul's prosperity; and destruction of property, land, family, etc. as his own = Soul's destruction. Otherwise, the residual potencies accumulated in various life-states, since eternity, show the eternal-ness of the Soul and the destructive nature of physical bodies.
Due to the potencies of experience of death-pain in the previous life-states, this Fear of Death, pains every living being — from a worm to a human being (including ignorant to learned ones); and on having any such situation he puts every possible effort to avoid this. In the present life, none have either experienced this death pain or inferred it, and most of the living-being even had not heard about this pain from the intellectuals or read it from scriptures, but an effort to escape from this death pain in any such situation, proves the existence of residual potencies of experience of death-pain in the previous life-states. Seer Vyaasa had accepted the existence of Fear of Death in the mind of every living being since every soul had experienced this death pain in previous lives and its potencies equally exist in the mind of all the Souls.
Seer Vyaasa said that even a worm has this Fear of Death. An example of this can be seen in the baby turtles who have just been born near the seashore. These baby turtles, just on coming out from the eggs, run towards the sea in order to save their lives from the other animals who are present there to eat them out. These baby turtles who have just been born, have not experienced the death pain yet but having the Fear of Death in their minds by seeing the presence of flesh-eating animals who are ready to eat them, proves this affliction and the experience of death-pain in their previous lives.
For the cessation of this affliction, Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote that - "This affliction is removed when the man realizes that Soul, GOD, and Matter = the material cause of the universe, are immortal objects, and formation and deformation of material things are ending in nature. With the removal of afflictions, Soul achieves salvation." In fact, Nescience had been said as the root cause of the other four afflictions. So, till the person will not destroy the Nescience by real knowledge i.e., by the process of shravaNa chatuShThaya = Four-step Realisation method (study = listening, logical thinking, meditation, and cognizance), till then by believing the mortal body, etc. as immortal ones, considering himself as a body or part of the body, destruction of himself = Soul along with the destruction of the body, and separation of himself = Soul from the present body as his death, he will remain scared by Fear of Death. Here it should be kept in mind that as Nescience does not get destroyed by mere verbal knowledge and/or by listening to real knowledge, So, also the other afflictions = Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, Fear of Death do not cease by mere verbal knowledge. By the cessation of Nescience, these afflictions also cease to exist, and with the increase and proficiency = development of Nescience, Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death also increase and become fully developed.
So 'Fear of Death' also, like other afflictions, does not affect a person, who has attained discriminative knowledge. It has to be kept in mind that the Attachments, etc. are avoidable till these are caused by Nescience, on the other hand, these become useful when born from the discrimination. As Attachment for obtaining real knowledge, study and teaching of Vedas, moving on the path of virtue and intelligence for pleasure in life; Aversion for acts against the Vedas, acts affected by lust-avarice-anger-illusion-greed, adopting the afflictive modifications in order to remain away from the pains which will be caused on the fruition of these acts, are useful to live peacefully in this world ; and in the same way by knowing the residual potencies, of death-pains, accumulated in various life-states, with the wish for not to die in future, adopting the various means of salvation in this life; all the above type of modifications are not afflictions and these start the cycle of non-afflictive modifications - residual potencies - modifications for the person and thereby enable him to remain away from this life-cycle. In this way, these modifications being caused by discrimination become useful for the person.
