In English:
Component Word : anubhuutaviShayaaH asampramoShaH smRRitiH.
Sutra in English : anubhuutaviShayaasampramoShaH smRRitiH.11.
Meaning in English : (smritiH) Memory is (asampramoShaH) not-forgetting = retaining the (anubhuuta-viShayaaH) objects which are experienced.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The fifth memory i.e., the objects or activities that are perceived, and their impressions remain in the mind, and not forgetting that object or activity is called memory.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa on Worship).

Meaning In English : (kim chittam) Does the mind (smarati) remember (pratyayasya) experience of knowledge (aahosvit) or (viShayasya iti) the object? At the time of experience, (pratyayah) the knowledge (graahyo-paraktaH) consists of the object i.e., it is colored with its object, thus the mind (aarambhate) begins the formation of (sa.nskaaram) the impression (tat jaatiiyakam) of the same type i.e., (graahya-grahaNa-ubhayaakaara-nirbhaasaH) consisting both the object and its knowledge. Now (sa sa.nskaaraH) that impression [which consists of object and its knowledge] (sva-vya~njakaa~njanaH) manifests from its own cause, (janayati) generates (smritim) a memory (tadaakaaram eva) having the same form and (graahya-grahaNa-ubhayaatmikaam) consisting of both the object and its knowledge. (tatra) Out of two there (grahaNaakaara-puurvaa) act of knowledge, through sense-organs, i.e., the modification part is (buddhiH) the intellect, and (graahyaakaara-puurvaa) the part colored with the object mainly (smritiH) is memory.
(saa cha) This memory is (dvayii) two-fold — (bhaavita-smarttavyaa cha) imagined = where the memory is of an imagined or unreal object and (abhaavita-smarttavyaa cha) un-imagined = where the memory is of a real object. (svapne) In dreams (bhaavita-smarttavyaa) the memory is imagined i.e., it is about the unreal or imagined objects; (tu) on the other hand (jaagrat-samaye) at the time of awakening (abhaavita-smarttavyaa iti) it is about the real objects.
(sarvaaH cha etaaH) All these (smritayaH) memories (prabhavanti) are born (pramaaNa-viparyaya-vikalpa-nidraa-smritiinaam-anubhavaat) in a sequence of the impression of Real Cognition, Unreal Cognition, Imagination, Sleep, and Memory.
(sarvaaH cha etaaH) All these (vrittayaH) modifications are (sukha-duHkha-mohaatmikaaH) of the nature of pleasure, pain, and illusion. (sukha-duHkha-mohaaH cha) Pleasure, pain, and illusion (vyaakhyeyaaH) will be described (klesheShu) in the context of afflictions. (raagaH) Attachment is (sukha-anushayii) sticking to pleasure and its experience in sequence. (dveShaH) Aversion is (duHkha-anushayii) sticking to pain and its experience in sequence. (mohaH punaH) And the illusion is (avidyaa iti) Nescience only. (etaaH sarvaaH) All these (vrittayaH) modifications are (niroddhavyaaH) checkable = restrain-able. (aasaam nirodhe) On restraint of these mental modifications, (sampraGYaataH vaa samaadhiH) Cognitive Trance (bhavati) is achieved, and thereafter (asampra-GYaataH vaa iti) Ultra-Cognitive Trance is achieved.
Vedic Commentary in English : A person normally enjoys and experiences many objects and subjects in this world and thereby experiences pleasure-pain therefrom. All those experienced and enjoyed subjects = objects accumulate in the mind as residual potencies and remain present there. Whenever some incidental cause of any such residual potency becomes present, then that subject = object along with its experience and enjoyment becomes available to that person; this is called memory.
A basic query raised with regard to memory is - "whether the mind remembers the experience of knowledge or the object?" i.e., whether memory is of the Jar or knowledge of the Jar and its experience. While explaining the process of memory it is said that at the time of experience, knowledge of the experience of graspable objects like Jar takes place; so, that experience of knowledge of the object creates impression = residual potency in the mind, along with both the object and its knowledge. Residual potencies, created from the experience of an object, cause memory in the future. That residual potency, manifested by its incidental cause, generates memory of the same form i.e., consisting of both the object and its knowledge. So, the memory is neither of the objects alone nor of the experience of knowledge of the object alone, but it is of both the object and its knowledge. For example, on knowing the Jar, a person says I know the Jar; this knowledge is called vocational knowledge. On having such knowledge, one thinks that he has the knowledge of Jar, and this knowledge causes memory in the future. So, memory consists of both the object and its knowledge.
The difference between memory and experience is to be understood. Experience is the primary part of knowledge from the intellect = mind, and memory is the primary part of the form of an object. The memory is of the experienced object, not only of the experience of the object. Memory is of two types —
1. Imagined — When the object of the memory is imaginary or not real, it is called imagined memory.
2. Un-imagined — When the object of the memory is real, it is called un-imagined memory.
Memory taking place in dreams is an imagined one. Since during the dreams, remembrance of the objects is not as per the form of the objects. Incidents and experiences are intermixed with one another in different ways, so, memory takes the place of experiences of the objects which are interlinked with other incidents. For example, somebody might have seen, in the dream, the headless body of a boy laying along with the head of an elephant, and thereby a person with the elephant head and the human body was imagined which is now considered as a deity. This type of living structure is not possible in real life as per the rules of Creation and system and knowledge of GOD.
At the time of awakening, the object is remembered as it was experienced; so, memory being as per the form of the object and its experience is natural and real and therefore known as un-imagined.
All these memories are born in a sequence of the impression of Real Cognition, Unreal Cognition, Imagination, Sleep, and Memory. Here it is to be understood that there is also, a memory of the memory.
Since the mind is formed from the three-fold Qualities (Quality of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia), so, all the modifications are of the nature of pleasure, pain, and illusion. These pleasures, pain, and illusions are the results of afflictions. Experience of pleasure results in attachment towards the objects of pleasure; experience of pain results in aversion towards the objects of pain; and illusion itself is nescience only. So, all the modifications being afflictive - being affected by afflictions and related to afflictions, are restrainable. During the time of worship, it is important and compulsory to restrain all the modifications, so, that Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive trances can be achieved. However, during the time of social behavior and normal life, it is important to restrain perversion = unreal cognition. Of the remaining modifications, real cognition = perception, etc. are for the cognition of objects = subjects in the real form; imaginations being commonly used; sleep is mandatory for a healthy life; memory being the result of all the modifications, and these cannot be restrained altogether. But it is important to understand that one should perform in such a way that all other modifications should not be affected by perversion = false knowledge = unreal cognition, and in such a situation only the other modifications will remain non-afflictive and can be restrained during the time of worship.
