Padas Name : Samaadhi Paada / Trance | Sutra No : 12
In English:
Component Word : abhyaasavairaagyaabhyaam tat nirodhaH.
Preface to Sutra in English : athaa.a.asaa.m nirodhe ka upaayaa iti—
Meaning in English : (atha) Now (ka upaayaH) what is the mean of (nirodhe) restraining (aasaam iti) these mental modifications:—
Sutra in English : abhyaasavairaagyaabhyaa.m tannirodhaH.12.
Meaning in English : (tat) These mental modifications = activities are (nirodhaH) restrained (abhyaasa-vairaagyaabhyaam) by Practice and Desirelessness.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Now the means of keeping away the (a) evil functioning of these five modifications, and (b) concentration of objects other than GOD, are explained — (1) Practice of means as suggested with reference to worship and (2) Desirelessness i.e., to remain away from all evil works and sins. By these two means, restrain the five mental modifications as above and keep these involved in the worship of GOD.
(Rigvedadibhasyabhuumika - Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : chittanadii naamobhayato vaahinii. vahati kalyaaNaaya vahati paapaaya cha. yaa tu kaivalyapraagbhaaraa vivekaviShayanimnaa saa kalyaaNavahaa. sa.msaarapraagbhaaraa.avivekaviShayanimnaa paapavahaa. tatra vairaagyeNa viShayasrotaH khiliikriyate, vivekadarshanaabhyaasena vivekasrota udghaaTyata ityubhayaadhiinashchittavRRittinirodhaH.
Meaning In English : (chitta-nadii-naama) The stream of mind (ubhayato-vaahinii) flows in two ways, i.e., (vahati kalyaaNaaya) flows for welfare (cha) and (vahati paapaaya) flows for sin. (yaa tu) That which flows (kaivalya-praagbhaaraa) towards salvation (viveka-viShaya-nimnaa) down the plane of discriminative knowledge, (saa) that is (kalyaaNa-vahaa) the stream of welfare, and that (sa.nsaara-praagbhaaraa) flows towards the material world and its objects, i.e., finding happiness from material objects (aviveka-viShaya-nimnaa) down the plane of indiscriminative ignorance, (paapa-vahaa) is the stream of sin.
(tatra) Among the above streams, (viShaya-srotaH) the flow of mind towards the material objects and their desire-ness is (khiliikriyate) stopped (vairaagyeNa) by Desirelessness; and (viveka-srota) its flow towards discrimination (udghaaTyate) is opened (viveka-darshana-abhyaasena) by habituating the mind to the experience of true knowledge of Mind and Soul.
(iti) Hence (chitta-vritti-nirodhaH) restraint of mental modifications is (ubhayaadhiinaN) dependent upon both i.e., Desirelessness and Practice.
Vedic Commentary in English : It is a must to restrain the modifications of the mind during worship. Not only at the time of worship but even during social and normal life, it is important to check the perversion = unreal cognition in order to be successful in life and move on the path of Yoga. The means to restrain these modifications are Practice and Desirelessness. Both the means are complimentary to each other, so, the use of both means is necessary for the restraint of modifications. By Desirelessness one sees the defects in the worldly objects and thereby stops the outward movements of mind and senses which have been in practice since eternity; by Practice of discriminating knowledge internal movement of mind is started which helps in restraint of modifications.
The stream of mind flows in two ways. The first type of stream flows on the path of discriminating knowledge and moves toward for achievement of salvation. The second type of stream flows on the path of nescience and moves towards the bonds of the world. This flow results in the accumulation of sins = vice. The second flow is on the path of nescience, and it strengthens the vicious cycle of afflictive modification - residual potency - modification, so, this stream is said to be of sin. By flowing on the first path Soul is able to attain salvation and by flowing on the second path Soul remains involved in the life-cycle and experiences various types of pains.
Normally a man has both types of streams of mind. But the stream on the path of welfare is very light, and as a footway where flow had not taken place for many births; and the second stream which is flowing on the path of worldly affairs and material enjoyments, and being on the path of sin is flowing strongly and its view is very proper. So, for the devotee, who wants to move on the path of Yoga, a two-fold program is advised —
1. By Desirelessness on seeing the defects of material enjoyments (i.e., pains, affliction, nescience, etc.), check the stream flowing on the path of sin i.e., have the sense of aversion for this path so, that the eternal flow on this path is stopped; and
2. By Practicing discriminating knowledge of Soul and Matter, the stream of welfare is to be started, continued, and strengthened.
The doors for the stream on the path of worldly affairs are nescience, attachment, aversion, lust-ness, sex, anger, greed, illusion, egoism, etc. Because of these defects, a person is involved in achieving material enjoyment, and his modifications flow on the path of sin and remain involved in the life-cycle. To check this stream, one has to see the defects of material enjoyment and close these doors where-from the mental modifications are flowing on this path. For this Practice of Restraints (aphorism 2.30) and Observances (aphorism 2.33) is very helpful. By performing Restraints and Observances, the stream on the path of welfare starts flowing and one is able to move on the path of welfare. It is mandatory for a devotee, who wants to move on the path of salvation, to check his relationship toward worldly enjoyments. But due to residual potencies accumulated since eternity and the practice of outward flow of mental modifications, it is not easy to control the defects of attachment, aversion, lust-ness, greed, anger, egoism, etc. On account of the practice of outward mental modifications during so, many life-states, a person naturally moves on a strong path of afflictive modification - residual potency - modification. So, Lord Krishna advises in the Gita —
asa.nshayam mahaabaaho manodurnirgraham chalam.
abhyaasena tu kounteya vairaagyeNa cha grihyate. (Gita 6.35)
O Arjuna! There is no suspicion that the mind is very unsteady, and can be controlled with great difficulty. But by constant Practice and Desirelessness towards the sin, it can be controlled.
Hence restraint of mental modifications is dependent upon both i.e., Desirelessness and Practice, and it becomes easy to move on the path of restraint of modifications by Practice and Desirelessness and the devotee becomes able to achieve his supreme goal of salvation. There is no other path for this.
