Samaadhi Paada / Trance / 23
Padas Name : Samaadhi Paada / Trance | Sutra No : 23
In English:
Component Word : iishvarapraNidhaanaat vaa.
Preface to Sutra in English : kimetasmaadevaasannatamaH samaadhirbhavati a athaasya laabhe bhavatyanyo.api kashchidupaayo na veti —
Meaning in English : (kim) Is (samaadhiH) trance (bhavati) attained (aasannatamaH) speediest (etasmaat eva) by the above means only i.e., by the intense level of means and most intense level of Supreme Desirelessness? (atha) Or (anyaH api kashchit bhavati) is there any other (upaayaH) mean (asya laabhe) for attaining the trance, (na vaa iti) or not? This question is answered —
Sutra in English : iishvarapraNidhaanaadvaa.23.
Meaning in English : (vaa) And (Ishvara-pranidhaanaat) by having full devotion to GOD, the trance is attained at the speediest level.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : And for the attainment of trance, the other means is that having full-hearted devotion to GOD, the mind calms down and one attains the trance speedily.
(Rigvedaadibhaasyabhuumikaa - on worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : praNidhaanaadbhaktivisheShaadaavarttita IshvarastamanugRRihNaatyabhi-dhyaanamaatreNa. tadabhidhyaanamaatraadapi yogina aasannatamaH samaadhilaabhaH samaadhiphala.m cha bhavatiiti.
Meaning In English : (praNidhaanaat bhaktivisheShaat) By full = wholehearted devotion, (IshvaraH) GOD, (aavarttita) being drawn towards him, (anugrihNaati) becomes gracious (tam) to him, (abhi-dhyaana-maatreNa) by merely wishing. (tat abhi-dhyaana-maatraat) By GOD'S mere wishing or by His Grace (api) also, (samaadhi-laabhaH) attainment of trance (cha) and (samaadhi-phalam) fruits of trance (aasannatamaH bhavati) become speediest (yoginaH iti) for a Yogi.
So, it means that when special devotion is exhibited towards GOD, He showers HIS Grace on the devotee through mere contemplation. With the help of meditation, a Yogi acquires the state and fruits of trance very soon.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, the speediest means of achieving Ultra-cognitive Trance and its fruits is said as an intense level of keen Supreme Desirelessness. Is this the only means or any other means is there for this purpose? To answer this question Seer Patanjali says that 'by having full devotion to GOD, the trance is attained at the speediest level.' So, the combination of 'Devotion to GOD' and the intense-most level of Supreme Desireless results in the achievement of Ultra-cognitive Trance and its fruit in the least time.
As per aphorism 1.16, Supreme Desirelessness is becoming thirstless towards the Qualities by the practice of cognizance of the Soul. Perfection in the level of Supreme Desirelessness is achieved only on the cognizance of GOD after the cognizance of the Soul. Desirelessness being the highest perfection of discriminative knowledge, so, perfection in the Supreme Desirelessness can take place only after the cognizance of GOD. Since the highest perfection of knowledge takes place only after the knowledge of GOD. So, in this way, the perfection of Supreme Desirelessness increases continuously.
Similarly in the explanation of aphorism 1.18, it is clarified that GOD remains as a base of concentration in the Ultra-cognitive Trance; and in this state, only the conscious Soul gets to exist in the conscious form of GOD with full knowledge of it.
As, by the knowledge and on the basis of GOD, the above works take place; so, in the same way by devotion to GOD the speediest success of Ultra-cognitive Trance and its results are also, attained.
Now, what is devotion to GOD? It is explained in 2.1 by Seer Vyaasa as - 'Ishvara-praNidhaanam sarvakriyaaNaam paramagurau arpaNam tat-phala-sa.nyaaso, vaa' i.e., devotion to GOD, is dedicating of all the actions to the GOD and renunciation of their fruits'. Similarly, Bhoja also, said that - 'dedicating all the acts to GOD, not wishing for the experience and pleasure from material enjoyments as the fruits of his acts, is devotion to GOD'. In this regard, Swami Dayanand wrote that 'surrender to GOD means a surrender of self to GOD by one's full strength, all qualities, vitality, affection of mind', and 'by the devotion to GOD, the mind calms down and one attains the trance speedily'. And then what is a devotion to GOD? In this regard, Swami Dayanand wrote in his commentary on Yajurveda 25.13 that "remaining ready to obey all HIS orders = teaching'. The extremity of love for GOD is alone is said as a devotion to GOD. But this devotion is not merely repeating the name of GOD but it is effective only in obeying the teachings of GOD. The teachings of GOD are given in Vedas which are for the all-round well-being of the Souls.
Similarly in Rigveda 8.69.1 - 'pra pra vastriShTubhamiShaam ... ' there is advice for whole-hearted surrender to GOD with love and faith for attaining immortal pleasure-ness. The trance cannot be attained without a whole-hearted surrender to GOD. This fact has been strongly said by Seer Patanjali as - 'samaadhi-siddhiH Ishvara-praNidhaanaat' (2.45) that trance is achieved by surrender to GOD. This is the easiest means to attain the trance. Though it is an easy means, the devotee has to perform accordingly. The devotee, after knowing the real form of GOD, has to maintain His presence-ness in the mind at all times and control all his acts according to the knowledge given in the Vedas. In this way, the devotion to GOD is performed.
So, the devotee, after restraining all the external modifications of the mind, does all his acts and makes his mind, vitality, and Soul according to the teaching of GOD, gets himself surrendered to GOD. He not only dedicates all his acts to GOD but also, does not wish for the fruits of his acts, since he wants to get released from all the pains and their cause i.e., from the life cycle itself. In this way he knows that I am always existing within the omnipresent GOD; and can never be separate from the presence of GOD; and in the same way, GOD being present in me knows all my feelings and acts in true meanings. In this way, he remains surrendered to GOD at all times.
GOD becomes gracious to such surrendered devotees = yogi by mere wishing. And such a gratified yogi attains the trance and its fruits in no time. In this way, by having an intense level of keen Supreme Desirelessness accompanied by devotion to GOD, a yogi is able to attain the Ultra-cognitive Trance and its fruits in the least time.
The "devotion to GOD" as a means is useful only for the nine types of devotees as explained in the last two aphorisms, not for others. Here the word "vaa" is not meant for an option but is for a combination of two. Only by devotion to GOD, without adopting the other means i.e., the accessories of yoga with faith and not becoming desireless towards the Qualities, a devotee cannot achieve the trance and its fruits. Even GOD cannot entrance a person who is not properly adopting the accessories of Yoga. GOD gives the justified fruits (for the acts) to all the Souls as per their performance and ability only. Prayer and surrender to the GOD are only effective after a complete performance, by the Souls, with true spirits, not before that. So, the yogi alone gets the desired result of trance and its fruits, not others.
So, by adopting the accessories of Yoga and maintaining the intense level of Supreme Desirelessness along with devotion to GOD, one is able to attain the Ultra-cognitive Trance and its fruits at the earliest.
