Samaadhi Paada / Trance / 29
Padas Name : Samaadhi Paada / Trance | Sutra No : 29
In English:
Component Word : tataH pratyakchetanaadhigamaH api antaraaya abhaavaH cha.
Preface to Sutra in English : ki.m chaasya bhavati —
Meaning in English : (cha) And (kim) what else (bhavati) comes to (asya) him = this Yogi?
Sutra in English : tataH pratyakchetanaadhigamo.apyantaraayaabhaavashcha.29.
Meaning in English : (tataH) Thence = by devotion to GOD, (pratyak-chetanaa-adhigamaH) understanding and achievement of Supreme Soul GOD (api) also, takes place along with the cognizance of Self = Soul; (cha) and (antaraayaabhaavaH) absence of obstacles also, take place.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Then the result of the above to these preachers = worshipper is the achievement of Supreme Soul GOD and ceasing of his nescience, etc. and other obstacles like disease, etc. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - On Worship).
Vyaasa Commentary in English : ye taavadantaraayaa vyaadhiprabhRRitayaste taavadIshvarapraNi-dhaanaanna bhavanti. svaruupadarshanamapyasya bhavati. yathaiveshvaraH puruShaH shuddhaH prasannaH kevalo.anupasargastathaayamapi buddheH pratisa.mvedii yaH puruSha ityevamadhigachChati.
Meaning In English : (ye taavat) Whatever (antaraayaa) the obstacles of Yoga i.e., (vyaadhi-prabhritayaH) disease, etc. nine explained in the next aphorism, (te taavat) all these (na bhavanti) cease to be, (Ishvara-praNidhaanaat) by devotion to Supreme Soul = GOD. And (svaruupa-darshanam) true form of himself = Soul (bhavati) is seen (api) along with the true form of Supreme Soul = GOD (asya) by this Yogi. (evam adhi-gachchhati) And this way he knows that (yathaiva) just as (IshvaraH puruShaH) Supreme Soul = GOD is (suddhaH) pure, (prasannaH) calm (kevalaH) free and (anupasargaH) without variances of any kind; (tathaa) such is (ayam) this (puruShaH) Soul (api) also, (yaH) who (buddheH pratisamvedii) cognizes the objects shown to him by the mind, (iti) and this way knows he the real form of himself.
Vedic Commentary in English : When a yogi performs devotion to GOD, i.e., by repeating the word 'AUM', pondering on the form of GOD, making his life according to the properties of GOD, performing all his acts in the presence of GOD i.e., with the belief GOD is omnipresent, and surrendering his mind and self to the GOD, then what is his achievement? It is said that by devotion to GOD, Yogi is able to achieve the cognizance of GOD along with the cognizance of self. The second achievement is that all the obstacles of Yoga also, end = do not exist.
In this way by devotion to GOD, a yogi gets the cognizance of Self = Soul along with the cognizance of GOD. In the last aphorism, it was advised that yogi should have the feeling of the presence of GOD while performing all his acts. He should repeat the word 'AUM' and meditate on the form of GOD. By such a performance, a yogi is able to cognize the GOD. This cognizance is not of only GOD, but also, of his own form = Soul, in the close intimacy of GOD.
How one is able to achieve the cognizance of the form of Self = Soul, by the cognizance of the form of GOD? On this Seer Vyaasa said that - the yogi gets the knowledge that as the GOD, who is omnipresent in the universe, is pure, free from all dirt, calm, painless since not related to afflictions, free, complete in Himself and without any variances, so, is the Soul, who cognizes the modifications of the mind, being a conscious object. In reality, GOD and Soul, both are conscious in form, not made of Qualities or a mixture of consciousness and Qualities of Matter, changeless, pure, free from variances, and not liable to increase-decrease. GOD always remains in the same state; however, the Soul while coming in contact with the Matter, on account of nescience, forgets his real pure form, comes in the life-cycle and gets related to afflictions, acts, and fruition, and appears in the form of modifications of the mind. The same Soul when adopts the path of Yoga, exists in his real form, on restraint of all modifications. (Ref aphorism 1.3 - 'tadaa draShTuH svaruupe-vasthaanam'). This is the state of Ultra-cognitive trance where the Soul achieves the knowledge of his pure form, with the help of and on the basis of the Supreme Soul GOD. Here at the time of cognizance of his own form, there is no help and role of mind (= the product of Matter) for such cognizance. However, in the state of Egoism Cognitive Trance, the Soul cognizes his conscious form only with the help of the mind (Ref commentary of Seer Vyaasa on aphorism 1.41). On the basis of cognizance in Egoism Cognitive Trance, the Soul by knowing his conscious form which is entirely distinct from the inanimate Matter puts efforts into the cognizance of the Supreme Conscious Soul GOD, and with the results, he is able to reach this stage. This is the difference in cognizance in both states. While with the cognizance in the state of Egoism Cognitive Trance, the Soul does not become free from worldly bonds of life; however, with the cognizance of his pure conscious form in the Ultra-cognitive Trance, the Soul becomes free from the worldly bonds of life and achieves salvation on departure from his present body.
Most of the commentators have referred to the cognizance of the Soul only as having devotion to GOD. But it should be kept in mind, that when there is devotion to GOD and meditation is of the form of GOD, then cognizance of GOD will take place. In this state cognizance of GOD is a natural result, so, Seer Vyaasa had said - 'svaruupa-darshanam api asya bhavti' - i.e., the yogi also, cognizes the true form of self. This illusion took place on seeing the words 'buddheH pratisamvedii' in Vyaasa' commentary, since Soul only experiences the mind and its modifications, not GOD, so, they have not accepted the cognizance of GOD. But they have ignored the word 'api (= also)' in 'svaruupa-darshanam api asya bhavati'. So, while giving meaning to this phrase we have written - And (svaruupa-darshanam) true form of himself = Soul (bhavti) is seen (api) along with the true form of Supreme Soul = GOD (asya) by this Yogi. In the aphorism, the word used by Seer Patanjali is 'pratyakchetana-adhigamaH' which means 'conscious soul present in us'. We are not a body only which is made by a mixture of various products of Matter, so, the Soul, which exists in this body, is taken as a target for cognizance. We are the Soul, who is administering this body, and GOD is present in the Soul by his omnipresence property. Here is the testimony of shatapatha braahmaNa —
Shatapatha 14.6.7.30.
i.e., One who lives in the Soul is different from the Soul and whom the Soul does not know. The Soul is a body for him, and who rules the Soul by being existing inside and outside the Soul. Who is your Soul, and who is eternal, He is GOD. So, GOD is the Soul of the Soul who is present in the Soul also. So, cognizance of GOD takes place along with the cognizance of the Soul.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati also accepted the achievement of the Supreme Soul GOD in his commentary on this aphorism.
The second achievement of devotion to GOD is that the obstacles of Yoga in the form of disease etc. cease to exist so, that these do not become a hindrance for the Yogi for his performance of accessories of Yoga. As it is said in Rigveda —
tvam hi shashvatiinaam-indra dartaa puraamasi. hantaa dasyoH-manoH-vridhaH patiH-divaH. Rigveda 8.98.6.
i.e., GOD alone is the destroyer of all the eternal, endless modifications, pains, and obstacles appearing in the mind of a human being.
