Padas Name : Samaadhi Paada / Trance | Sutra No : 7
In English:
Component Word : pratyakShaanumaanaagamaaH pramaaNaani.
Sutra in English : pratyakShaanumaanaagamaaH pramaaNaani. 7.
Meaning in English : (pramaaNaani) Real cognitions are (pratyakSha) perception = sense-cognition, (anumaana) inference = sequential cognition and (aagamaaH) verbal cognition.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Direct cognition is that true, an unerring knowledge, which springs from the contact of the sense-organ with the object; for example, on looking at an object from a distance, one has a doubt, whether it is a man or something else. Then looking at from close quarters one becomes certain that what he is looking at is a human being and nothing else.
The knowledge of the bearer of a mark, from the mark, is called inference, for example, on seeing the son one concludes that he is having mother-father or was certainly there.
The knowledge springing from a verbal authority is that which produces conviction in respect of things, seen or unseen, by means of words, for example, the saying that salvation is to be obtained through real knowledge. This advice of adepts is an example of verbal cognition. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - Subject matter of Vedas)

Meaning In English : (chittasya) The mind (uparaagaat) contacts (baahya-vastu) external objects through (indriya-praNaalikayaa) the sense-organs and (tad-viShayaa) that object having (saamaanya-visheShaatmano-arthasya) both generic and specific qualities = properties; (virttiH) the mental modification which (visheSha-avadhaaraNa-pradhaanaa) cognizes mainly the specific properties of the object is called (pratyakSham pramaaNam) the perception = real cognition = sense-cognition.
On contact of the Soul with the mind (chitta-vritti-bodhaH) the knowledge of mental modification by (pauruSheyaH) the Soul is (phalam-avishiShTaH) the result of the above cognition, since (prati-samvedii-puruSha) the Soul only is the knower of all knowledge that exists in the mind, (iti upariShTaat upapaadayiShyaamaH) this fact will be established further (in aphorism 4.22).
(anumeyasya) The means of inference, the properties in the object to be inferred, (yaH sambandaH) the relationship (anuvrittaH) which exists (tulya jaatiiyeshu) in the same class of objects, and (vyaavrittaH) does not exist in (bhinna-jaatiiyebhyaH) the different class of objects; (vrittiH) the mental modification which (tad-viShayaa) considers above relationship and (saamaanya-avadhaaraNa-pradhaanaa) cognizes chiefly the generic qualities = properties of the object is called (anumaanam) inference or sequential cognition. (yathaa) For example, (chandra-taarakam) the moon and stars are (gatimat) moving objects, (deshaantara-praapteH) because they move from one place to another (chaitravat) like Chaitra [human being]. (cha) And the object (apraaptiH) which does not go from one place to another, that (agatiH) does not have movement, like (vindhayaH) the Vindhaya (= Name of a mountain).
(driShTonumito vaa arthaH) An object or subject perceived or inferred (aaptena) by a competent person (upadishyate) is precepted (shabdena) in words (paratra svabodha-sankraantaye) with the intention of transferring his knowledge to another person. And (shrotuH-vrittiH) the mental modification of the hearer, (shabdaat) created by those words (tadartha viShayaa) regarding that object = subject or the meaning = knowledge of that object = subject, (aagamaH) is verbal cognition. (yasya vaktaa) Those teaching whose speaker (na driShTa-anumitaarthaH) has neither perceived nor inferred the object = subject (ashraddheyaarthaH) is not believable and (sa aagamaH) that verbal cognition (plavate) fails = turned down by the material facts; but (nirviplavaH syaat) it does not fail (muula-vaktari tu) in the learned speaker (driShTa-anumitaarthe) since he had either perceived or inferred the object = subject in true meaning.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali has given three categories of real cognition namely sense cognition, sequential cognition, and verbal cognition.
Sense Cognition:- Mind gets contact with external objects through sense organs and with that contact, a modification is manifested about the contacted external object. The external objects do have some generic properties and some specific properties. The modification manifested due to the dominance of specific properties of the object is called sense cognition. For example, a person had seen an object from a distance in the evening which is either a pole or a man. The generic qualities i.e., height, and fatness are the same, so he is not able to decide what it exactly is. Then on looking from close quarters at the specific properties i.e., stability, straightness, etc., it is decided that 'it is a pole, not a man'; or by the specific properties like movement, head, hands, legs, etc. it is decided that 'it is a man, not a pole'. So, in the sense of cognition, both the generic and specific qualities = properties are cognized, but due to cognition of mainly the specific properties, this modification is named sense cognition, since differentiation and specific knowledge of the object are possible by the specific properties only.
Seer Gautama had explained the sense cognition, in Nyaaya aphorism 1.1.4, as - "indriyaartha-sannikarSha-utpannam GYaanam-avyapadeshvam-avyabhichaari vyavasaayaatmakam pratyakSham." i.e., the knowledge manifested by contact of sense organs with external objects, which is not merely a verbal treatment, without illusion and is certain, is called sense cognition. The above qualities of sense are well incorporated in the definition given by Seer Vyaasa.
Here this is to be understood that the mind, being an inanimate object, cannot get the knowledge of the object by itself. It works in the close proximity of the conscious Soul and on the inspiration of the Soul alone and thereby grasps the external objects through sense organs. Mind alone is colored by various modifications and the Soul experiences those modifications in reality so, it is said that knowledge of mental modifications by the Soul is a result of the above cognition. This fact is also, explained in aphorism 1.4 as "vritti-saaruupyam-itaratra" and in 4.22 as "chiteH-aprati-sa.nkramaayaaH tadaakaaraapattau svabuddhi-samvedanam". Seer Vyaasa has also, confirmed this concept by saying "buddheH pratisamvedii puruSha iti" in aphorism 4.22. Similarly, Panchashikhachaarya also accepted this concept by saying "ekameva darshanam khyaatiH-eva darshanam". So, from these verbal cognitions Soul cannot be said as action-less, whereas he alone is the viewer, experiencer, and knower of the modifications. Because of this quality, he is involved in the life-death-life-cycle since eternity and he alone gets the fruits of his acts and achieves salvation.
Sequential Cognition (Inference):- The inference can be defined as the cognition of general properties that exist in the same class of objects and do not exist in the different classes of objects. By cognition of such general properties and thereby knowing the general properties of an object of the same class, which results in mental modification, is termed sequential cognition. Seer Vyaasa had given the example that the moon and stars are moving objects since these move from one place to another like a person named Chaitra. The object which does not move from one place to another is called stationary = non-moving object as in the case of Mountain Vindhyachal. So, by the cognition of the general property of movement, a decision has arrived that the moon and stars are moving objects. This is called sequential cognition.
Seer Gautama had defined inference as - "tat-puurvakam trividham anumaanam - puurvavat, sheShavat, saamaanyatodriShTam cha." (Nyaaya 1.1.5) i.e., inference is as per the sense cognition and is of three types. As on seeing the smoke, fire is inferred. The three types are — (1) Puurvavat i.e., by seeing the cause the future act is inferred, as by seeing the clouds, rain is inferred; (2) SheShavat i.e., by seeing the act its cause is inferred, as by seeing the creation, its creator is inferred; and (3) Saamaanyata-driShTa i.e., the normal inference is used as seeing a person in two different places, his journey is inferred. In this case, the cause-and-act relationship does not exist. By seeing the sun in the east in the morning and the west in the evening the movement of the earth is inferred.
Verbal Cognition:- An object or subject that is either cognized by senses or inferred by a competent person is advised to another person by the words for the knowledge of other common persons. With the result, a modification is manifested in the mind of such other persons, from those words, about the subject or object advised. Such modification is called verbal cognition. A question arises here that the modification also gets manifested from the words of a person who is a liar, and is under an illusion; does that modification = verbal cognition is to be treated as verbal cognition. Seer Vyaasa clears that the person who had not cognized the object through senses or ascertained through inferences, his advice is not considered worthy of faith and hence does not fall under the category of verbal cognition since such cognition can be countered by sense or sequential cognition by another person. On the other hand, the person who had cognized the subject = object through senses and/or ascertained through inference, his words = teachings alone are authentic.
Seer Gautama on the subject advises as follows - "aapta-updeshaH shabdaH" and "sa dvividhaH driShTa.adriShTaarthatvaat" (Nyaaya 1.1.7-8) i.e., an authoritative person (=aapta) is one who is a thorough scholar, well versed in all the sciences and philosophies, physical and spiritual, is virtuous, truthful, active, free from passions and desires, imbued with love for others, and who is an altruistic teacher of humanity solely actuated with the desire of benefiting the world by his knowledge, experience, and convictions. His advice and teachings are called verbal cognition. And similarly, GOD being the truest and greatest of all authoritative persons, His teaching in the form of Vedas is also, included in Verbal cognition.
The real knowledge of a subject alone is trustworthy. So, a person who has cognized the subject in real form is trusted. Any person who obtains the real knowledge of any external object from earth to Matter, Soul, and GOD, comes under the category of competent = authoritative person. Such a person, as he knows the subject for himself and experienced pleasure therefrom, advises the same to others for their well-being. The words = teachings of such persons are termed verbal cognition. The concept of an authoritative person is applied to the seers who have cognized the meanings of Vedic hymns, superior virtuous persons who cognized the subjects in real form, and others also, who do not fall into the above two categories.
So, not only seers who cognized the Soul and GOD and spiritual matters but also, the persons who cognized the material world = this universe through various mechanical instruments, their teaching on their respective subject comes under the category of verbal cognition.
Most types of social dealings and behavior in the world are based on verbal cognition. If the persons do not believe in the knowledge of various subjects achieved by predecessors of human life and start to know the subjects = objects from basics, then there would not be any development in this world. Every person takes the base of authoritative verbal cognition on a subject, behaves accordingly, and progresses further. Similarly, the knowledge of GOD, who is the only Omni-perfect and Omni-competent, in the form of Vedas is the authoritative source of verbal cognition which is helpful for the all-fold development of humanity.
Further verbal cognition is of two types. First is, in which the subject = objects can be cognized and/or perceived through senses. These subjects = objects are related to the present visible world. The second category is of the subjects = objects said to be of another world that cannot be cognized or perceived through senses. Verbal cognition of the second category is available in scriptures, as "agnihotram juhuyaat svargakaamaH" (Shatapatha.) i.e., a person willing to achieve heaven after the present life should perform Yagya (Vedic ritual). The more appropriate meaning that can be given is - 'A person willing to achieve pleasure should perform acts which are for the well beings of other living beings'. Since heaven cannot be seen in the present life, so, verbal cognition is of the second category named 'adriShTa'.
