Component Word : shabdaj~naanaanupaatii vastushuunyaH vikalpaH.
Sutra in English : shabdaj~naanaanupaatii vastushuunyo vikalpaH.9.
Meaning in English : (vikalpaH) Imagination is that which (shabda-GYaana-anupaatii) follows the verbal expressions and knowledge, but (vastu-shuunyaH) has no objective substratum thereof.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The third mental modification imagination is when someone has said to others that he had seen human beings with horns on their head. On hearing so, the other person makes a conception in his mind that there can be persons with horns on the head. This is imagination. This verbal expression is false in that there are words for this concept but there is no object corresponding to that, hence imagination.

Vyaasa Commentary in English : sa na pramaaNopaarohii, na viparyayopaarohii cha. vastushuunyatve.api shabdaj~naanamaahaatmyanibandhano vyavahaaro dRRishyate. tadyathaa chaitanya.m puruShasya svaruupamiti.

Meaning In English : (sa) This imagination (na) does not (pramaaNo-paarohii) reach up to real cognition = true knowledge, (cha) and (na) nor does (viparyayo-paarohii) it reaches up to unreal cognition = false knowledge; since (vastu-shuunyatve api) even without an objective substratum, (vyavahaaraH) its action (drishyate) is seen in practical life (shabda-GYaana-maahaatmya-nibandhanaH) basing on the power of verbal expression and knowledge thereof. (tad-yathaa) For example (puruShasya-svaruupam) "Soul is of the nature = form of (chaitanyam iti) consciousness". (yadaa) since (chitiH eva) consciousness alone is (puruShaH) Soul, (tadaa) then (kim-atra) what is here (kena vyapadishyate) predicted of what? (cha vyapadeshe) And by this verbal statement, "Consciousness is the nature = form of Soul", (vrittih) a mental modification (bhavati) is generated, (yathaa) as in the phrase (chaitrasya gauH iti) Chaitra's Cows. [As there is a relationship between two objects Chaitra and Cow; there is no such relationship between consciousness and Soul since consciousness alone is Soul].
(tathaa) Similarly, (puruShaH) the Soul (pratiShiddha-vastu-dharmaH) does not have the properties and/or characteristics of Matter and its products i.e., properties of Illuminative, Energetic, and Inertial substances and properties residing in the externally visible and invisible products like earth, sense organs, etc, and (niShkriyaH) does not have any activity which is a result of disturbing energetic substances (i.e., rajas), which means that all type of activities like movement, construction, destruction, conversion, formation which prevail in material objects, do not find a place in the Soul. And (tiShThati baaNaH sthaasyati sithata iti) "Arrow stands, will stand, has stood", in this example also, (gati-nivrittau dhaatvartha-maatram gamyate) the meaning of root alone is understood by cessation of motion.
(tathaa) Similarly, in the sentence "(puruShaH) The Soul (anutpatti-dharmaH iti) has the property of "not being born". Here (aabhaava-maatram) the mere absence of (utpatti-dharmasya) property of "being born" (avagamyate) is understood, (na puruSha-anvayii dharmaH) not any positive property = characteristics possessed by the Soul. (tasmaat) Therefore, (sa dharmaH) the absence of property of "being born" is understood from the verbal expressions, hence (vikalpitaH) being imagined, (tena cha) and that mental modification (asti vyavahaara iti) comes in practical usage.
Vedic Commentary in English : Imagination is a modification that is created in the mind, by words and knowledge, but there is no real object available for it. By hearing those words, the hearer imagines a substratum = object for it that does not exist in the material world. As somebody says - "son of a barren is coming." Since the concept – of the son of a barren is an imaginary impossible phenomenon, but a modification of the barren's son is generated in the mind of the hearer of these words, who is not there. Here a non-existing object = substratum is used on the strength of word power.
This modification neither comes under the category of perception = real cognition nor under perversion = unreal cognition. In both these categories, the object exists. In the case of real cognition, the true form of an object is cognized and in the case of perversion the object is cognized otherwise, but the object exists. However, in this case, the object is not there at all. So, this is considered a different type of modification. Real cognition is factual knowledge, perversion is false knowledge. Perversion modification ceases to exist in the generation of true knowledge. Perversion modification does manifest on account of defects of senses and residual potencies and with the removal of these defects, perversion modification also, ceases to exist. But in the case of imagination knowledge is imposed without its substratum, so this is not being the true knowledge the modification is not known as perception, nor this knowledge is removed at a later stage, so it is not known as perversion. People in general, even without defects, are affected by imaginary knowledge.
Imagination works in the following ways —
1. Considering the difference in one, i.e., considering the one object as two different objects; and
2. Considering the different as one, i.e., considering the two different objects as one.
1. For the first category example given by Seer Vyaasa is "Soul is of the form of consciousness". This example creates a piece of knowledge in the mind of a person that consciousness and Soul are two different objects as in the case of "Chaitra's cow = Cow of a person named Chaitra". As in the above phrase cow and Chaitra are related to each other, so, it is imagined in the case of consciousness and Soul. Consciousness is neither the property of the Soul nor there is a whole or part relationship between the two. In reality, consciousness alone is the Soul i.e., there is no separate identity of consciousness from the Soul. So, what is being said by what? So, by saying the relationship between the two is considering the one object as two and is an imagination.
Similarly, the other example given by Seer Vyaasa is "pratiShiddha-vastu-dharmaa niShkriya puruShaH." From the two adjectives used for the Soul, two imaginations are created. First is pratiShiddha-vastu-dharmaa puruShaH i.e., Soul does not have the properties and/or characteristics of Matter and its products i.e., properties of Illuminative, Energetic, and Inertial substances and properties residing in the externally visible and invisible products like earth, sense organs, etc. On hearing this, a modification is manifested in the mind that there is an absence of object properties in the Soul. Here the 'absence of object properties is an adjective for the Soul, so, this modification is not a perception but is imagination since 'absence of object property as an adjective for the Soul is totally a non-existing phenomenon since 'absence' as such is not a property which can be treated as an adjective for an object.
Similarly, niShkriya puruShaH i.e., Soul does not have any activity that is a result of disturbing energetic substances (i.e., rajas), which means that all types of activities like movement, construction, destruction, conversion, and formation that prevail in material objects, do not find a place in the Soul. As per Seer Yaaska, there are six types of activities that take place in objects - creation, manifestation, variation, increase, decrease, and destruction. The soul being the eternal object, such type of activity is not possible in him. So, modification of knowledge of 'absence of activities' as an adjective for the Soul, is also, an imagination only, as explained above. Most of the translators have said that the Soul is without any activity at all from the phrase niShkriya puruShaH. It is not correct since as per various Scriptures and Vedas Soul is said as a doer of acts, an experiencer, and moves to various bodies for fruits of his acts. In this regard various verbal testimonies are available —
yasminvrikShe madhvadaH suparNaa nivishante suvate chaadhi vishve.
tasyedaahuH pippalam svaadvagre tannonnashadyaH pitaram na veda.
Rigveda 1.164.22.
This world is created and gets destroyed for eternity, the Soul does take birth in various bodies and dies = leave. As are the acts of the Soul, so, are the fruits and the Soul is to experience such fruits as per justice of GOD. The relation of the Act is eternal with the Soul. Who so, ever acts as per nescience and acts against the teaching of GOD, suffers pain and others experience pleasure. (Swami Dayanand Saraswati)
vaayu punaatu savitaa punaatu-agneH-bhraajasaa suuryasya varchasaa.
vi muchyantaamusriyaaH. Yajurveda 35.3.
When the Soul leaves his present body, he gets attached to the energy, rays = light of the sun, air, etc., and moves, and when he enters the womb for the next birth, then he gets detached from the rays of light.
eSha aatmaa niShkraamati chakShuSho vaa muurdhno vaanyebhyo vaa shariiradeshebhyaH tamutkraamantam praaNo.anuutkraamati .... Brihadaaranyaka 4.4.2.
In this testimony, there is a description of the movement of life-power, and senses after the Soul when he leaves the body i.e., at the time of death from the present body.
Seer Gautama had given the properties of Soul as —
ichchaa-dveSha-prayatna-sukha-duHkha-GYaanaani aatmano li.ngam. (Nyaaya 1.1.10) i.e., the properties of the Soul are will = attachment, aversion, effort, pleasure, pain, and knowledge. So, the Soul with the properties of attachment, aversion, and effort cannot be said as action-less.
From the above testimonial proofs, the Soul is doing acts, experiences, putting efforts, and moving from one body to another as per the fruits of his vehicle of actions. So, it is proper to understand the phrase 'niShkriya puruShaH' that the Soul is without the acts taking place in material objects.
Now we give one example of this type of modification from Vedas — "vishNohyat paramam padam" (Yaju 34.44). On this part of the hymn, Swami Dayanand wrote that "the blissful form of the omnipresent GOD, which is worth achievable through salvation .... ". From the word 'vishNoH' which shows the relationship of 'of' which is the sixth form in Sanskrit, someone can assume that the form of GOD is different from the GOD which will be imagination. Since the blissful form of the GOD is not distinct from the GOD.
This type of behavior does exist in common social life such as “a cupboard of iron”, and “a table of wood” which are examples of imagination modification. In these examples, one is considering the two in one distinct object. The cupboard is nothing but iron only, if we take out all iron the cupboard will not exist, as the cupboard is made of iron; the same is the case of “a table of wood”. These are the cases of change of form only. Showing the relationship of the iron - cupboard, and wood - table is the form of imagination only.
2. Considering the different as one, i.e., considering the two different objects as one - an example for this category is given as follows - "Arrow stands, will stand, has stood", here the present, future and past tense form of Sanskrit root 'sthaa' is shown. The arrow being an inanimate object, there is no natural movement capacity in it. But on hearing this phrase, one assumes the cessation of movement of an arrow. The movement which is not there is assumed, and cessation of that movement is said, so, it is the case of imagination. Since giving movement is the property of an animate object who is not there, but that is assumed, and his property is imposed in the arrow and its cessation is prescribed.
Similarly, if somebody gets burnt by the touch of a hot iron, he says that he is burnt by the iron. It is assumed here that iron has the capacity to burn which is not correct. Actually, the fire has the capacity to burn, and it was fire present in the iron which made the man burn. So, iron and fire are considered as one, so, it is another example of imagination. In the same way the phrase "I am" is another example of imagination. Since 'I' is the property of egoism which is imposed in the Soul and accordingly it is said – “I am”, thereby egoism and the Soul are treated as one object only.
Another example given by Seer Vyaasa is - "anutpattidharmaa puruSha iti" i.e., "The Soul has the property of "not being born". Here the property which is denied is not the property of Soul. In fact, not taking birth is the form of the Soul, and it is not a separate identical object as such. So, this property is also, spoken by words, but does not exist as a separate identical object, hence it is a type of imagination only and is in practical usage.
