Component Word : tadaa draShTuH svaruupe avasthaanam.
Preface to Sutra in English : tadavasthe chetasi viShayaabhaavaad buddhibodhaatmaa puruShaH ki.msvabhaava a iti —
Meaning in English : (tadavasthe chetasi) In the restrained state of Mind, (viShaya-abhaavaat) there being no object for cognition, (kim svabhaavaH iti) what is the state of (buddhi-bodhaatmaa puruShaH) Soul, who cognizes the objects shown to it by the Mind?
Sutra in English : tadaa draShTuH svaruupe.avasthaanam.3.
Meaning in English : (This aphorism can have two meanings since there are two meanings of "Drasthuh" - 1. the Soul, who sees the objects shown to it by the mind, and 2. the GOD, who is the ultimate viewer of everything by His nature. These two meanings are as follows.)
1. (tadaa) In the restrained state of Mind, the Soul (avasthaanam) stands in the (svaruupe) conscious form of (draShtuH) the main viewer i.e., the Supreme Soul = GOD.
2. (tadaa) In the restrained state, (draShtuH) the Soul (avasthaanam) stands in (svaruupe) his real conscious form.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : 1. The question is - "where do these (= mental activities) rest when restrained?" The reply is "As the flow of water when stopped from a direction, then it flows in the lower level of surface and rests there, so, when the mental activities are stopped from the outer world = subjects, then these rest in the form of the Seer (GOD). (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa on Worship)
2. When the tendencies of the mind are fully concentrated and restrained, the Soul finds himself set in the Great GOD, who is the Seer of all. (Light of Truth - Chapter 9)
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : svaruupapratiShThaa tadaanii.m chitishaktiryathaa kaivalye.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : 1. (tadaaniim) In the state of Ultra-Cognitive Trance (chiti-shaktiH) the Soul (svaruupa-pratiShThaa) stands in the conscious form of draShtu = GOD (yathaa kaivalye) as it happens in the state of salvation.
2. (tadaaniim) In the restrained state of mind = in the state of Ultra-Cognitive Trance (chiti-shaktiH) the Soul (svaruupa-pratiShThaa) stands in his real conscious form (yathaa) as he stands (kaivalye) in the state of salvation = perfect freedom i.e., stands in his conscious form, totally detached from the Matter and its qualities = properties.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the restrained state of mind, all the external objects i.e., Matter and its products cease to exist as the base for the mind, and even the mind is not available as the base for cognition. (Why? Since on restraint of mental modifications, the mind is not being affected by the result of Matter's Qualities = Properties, and exists as pure like the Soul and disappears on attaining salvation.) Then, what is the state of the Soul i.e., when he is not cognizing the objects shown to him by the mind, then what is the nature of the Soul? It is replied here that in that state the Soul exists in his conscious form as it happens in salvation. In that state, the Soul is not related = remains connected with the Matter and its properties and exists in his conscious form. On having the discriminative knowledge of Soul and Matter, he gets rid of the bonds of Matter and exists in his real form.
In aphorism 1.2, Seer Vyaasa had described Soul as - chittishaktiH-apariNaamini-apratisa.nkramaa darshitaviShayaa shuddhaa cha anantaa. In reality, the Soul is a conscious object only, and his conscious form can never be destroyed. So, his conscious form remains the same in the trance and worldly state. Existence in his form means that he cognizes and experiences his conscious form in the Ultra-cognitive trance; not any other object which can be shown through the mind. On the other hand, in states other than the restrained state of mind, he cognizes the objects shown to him by the mind, which is termed as - vritti-saaruupyam-itaratra in the next aphorism. The soul experiences the other objects while being related to Matter. In the outward movement, the mind becomes active, so worldly objects and subjects are available to the Soul; whereas in the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance, the mind becomes inactive, so, worldly objects are not available and the Soul experiences his own conscious form. This is termed as existence in his own form.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati states that the existence of the Soul in his form does not end here, but he exists in the form of omnipresent and all-viewer GOD, as it happens in the case of Salvation. In this regard, Seer Kapila said in his Saankhya philosophy —
samaadhi-suShupti-mokSheShu brahmaruupataa. Saankhya 5.116.
When the Soul is in a state of trance, deep-sleep, and salvation then experiences the properties of GOD. So, he does not experience pain and pleasure on account of worldly experiences.
In the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance, the Soul does exist in his form; but this is also, a fact that salvation cannot be achieved without the cognizance = knowledge of Supreme Soul GOD. The same is described as discrimination of Matter and Soul, by Seer Kapila in aphorism 3.84 as - vivekaat-niHsheSha-duHkha-nivrittau kritakrityataa netaraat-netaraat. i.e., without having complete discriminative knowledge, all the pains are not completely destroyed. So, for the Soul, there are no other means than to achieve complete discrimination to become absolutely free. And complete discriminative knowledge is not possible without the knowledge and cognizance of GOD, and this fact has been declared in various places in Vedas and upaniShadas, as —
tameva viditvaati mrityumeti naanyaH panthaa vidyateyanaaya. Yajurveda 31.18.
It means that intellectuals come out from the vicious life-cycle (get freed from the pains of death) only on knowing GOD, and there are no other means for achieving Salvation.
So, it is clear from the above that means for the cessation of all the pain is knowledge of GOD, not merely the existence of the Soul in his own form. Again, this is also, a fact, that GOD cannot be cognized without the cognizance of the Soul. So, the Soul while existing in his form, gets himself existing in the form of GOD, who is also, present in him due to his omnipresence. So, the existence of a conscious Soul in the conscious form of omnipresent GOD takes place with full knowledge. On the other hand, in the state of outward movement of mind, the Soul does not experience his existence in omnipresent GOD, due to ignorance. However, while in deep sleep also, the existence takes place but without the knowledge of such existence. So, the Soul always exists in the form of the GOD only, but it is with knowledge in the case of Trance and Salvation, and in all other positions without such knowledge. The Soul has to attempt Yogic practices to establish himself in his own form, and then he, by his conscious form only, gets himself established in the conscious form of GOD. Why so? Since the cognizance of the Supreme Soul GOD cannot be done by means of inanimate objects like the mind and sense organs etc. This is the only state when all the pains ultimately cease to exist for the Soul, and this cannot happen in any other position. In this regard teachings of Seer Yama to Nachiketa are worth considering —
ya imam madhvadam veda aatmaanam jiivatantikaat. iishaanam bhuutabhavyasya na tato vijugupsate. etat vai tat. Katha-UpaniShada 4.5.
He, who knows the Soul, who experiences the fruits of his actions, lives in the body and shows identity through the body, and also, knows the Supreme Soul GOD who is conscious and creator of the world in past, present, and future, that intellectual on having such knowledge never repents i.e., does not fall back in the life-cycle again. This is the result of such knowledge.
So, the cognizance of the Soul only, cannot make the devotee achieve absolute freedom. He gets rid of the life-cycle only on having cognizance of GOD along with the cognizance of Self = Soul. The complete cessation of pains takes place only when the conscious Soul gets himself established in the conscious form of GOD. If the intention of establishment in the conscious form was meant to be established in the conscious form of the Soul only, then Seer Patanjali would not have advised for devotion to GOD by the aphorism "Ishvara-praNidhaanaat vaa" (1.23), and repetition of the name of GOD "AUM" and pondering over its meaning by the aphorism "tajjapaH tadartha-bhaavanam." (1.28).
The principle, that the Soul gets established in the conscious form of GOD by his conscious form only, is also, confirmed by Seer Vyaasa in his Philosophy of Vedaanta as—
chiti tanmaatreNa tadaatmakatvaadityauDhulomiH. Vedaanta 4.4.6.
While explaining this aphorism Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote in chapter 11 of Light of Truth - When the impurities of afflictions cease and the Soul is established in his conscious form, then gets related to the form of the Supreme Soul GOD. This is mentioned as the principle of Seer Audulomi. This principle is also, confirmed by the verse of Rigveda—
sa marmrijaana aayubhiH prayasvaanprayase hitaH. induratyo vichakShaNaH.
Rigveda 9.66.23
It means that cognizance of GOD takes place in Trance. When the Yogi concentrates on GOD and trance is achieved, then GOD is cognized as a conscious form of the self.
Query:- Seer Yajvalkya is advising for the cognizance of Soul in Brihadaanyaka UpaniShada as - "aatmaa vaa are draShTavyaH shrotavyo mantavyo nididhyaasitavyo maitreyaatmano vaa are darshanena shravaNena matyaa viGYaanenedam sarvam viditam." (2.4.5) Maitrayii! It is certain that Soul is worthy of being seen, listened to, meditated, and cognized. And it is certain that by seeing, listening, meditating, and cognizing the Soul, everything is known.
Here the full context concerns the Soul, so by "establishment in the form" the cognizance of the Soul is to be taken, not the cognizance of GOD.
Solution:- Seer Vyaasa has co-ordinated these contexts in the Vedaanta Philosophy. In this context Supreme Soul GOD is the target, not the common Soul who is involved in the life-cycle. This is clarified by aphorism - "vaakyaanvayaat" (1.4.19) i.e., by the logical concordance of the sentence, Supreme Soul GOD is described, not the other common Soul. The context was that Seer Yaajvalkya was going for renunciation and his wife asked about the achievement of salvation. Then he said that salvation is not possible with physical and worldly assets. He further advised that attachment to all i.e., husband, wife, son, physical assets, etc. is not for the requirement of these, but for the wish of the Soul, only all these are loved... And in the end, the above advice is - Maitrayii! It is certain that Soul is worthy of being seen, listened to, meditated, and cognized. And it is certain that by seeing, listening to, meditating, and cognizing the Soul, everything is known. In this whole context the cognizance of GOD, not mere cognizance of Soul, is a cause of salvation. So, cognizance of GOD is the target for the Soul.
So, as in the state of salvation, the Soul by knowing his pure conscious form, became free from afflictions, actions, fruition, residual potencies, and all the pains, remains established in the conscious form of GOD; in the same way while in the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance, yogi by knowing his pure conscious form and being established in the conscious form of GOD, becomes free from all the pains. But this position remains till he remains in a state of Ultra-cognitive Trance. However, in all other states, the painless position ends and the Soul appears in the form of mental modifications, which is explained in the next aphorism. So, the equality of trance and salvation was said by Seer Kapila which is referred to as "as in salvation" by Seer Vyaasa.
