Meaning in English : (vyutthaane chitte tu) In the outgoing mind = in the state of mind other than that of restrained state (na tathaa) he (the Soul) appears to be not so, centered in his conscious form, (tathaa api bhavanti sati) though in reality he is in the same form. (katham tarhi) How does he appear then? (darshita-viShayatvaat) Being the viewer of objects presented to him by the mind —
Sutra in English : vRRittisaaruupyamitaratra.4.
Meaning in English : (itaratra) In a state of mind other than that of the restrained state, the Soul (vritti-saaruupyam) appears in the form of mental modifications.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : The mode of actions of a devotee even when he is engaged in the affairs of the world remains calm, firmly fixed in righteousness, shining with the light of knowledge and wisdom, based on truthful reality, extremely sharp and quick, extraordinary and quite distinct from those of an ordinary man. Such as mental attitude is impossible in the case of a non-devotee and of a non-yogi. (From the Sanskrit Text).
When the devotee and common man engage in worldly acts, then the modifications of the devotee remain calm, firmly fixed in righteousness, being shining with the light of bliss is with courage and blissful; and modifications of an ordinary man are always in the world of joy and sorrow. Modification of devotees always increases in the light of knowledge, and modification of ordinary man always remains caught in the nescience.
(Rigvedaadibhaasyabhuumikaa on worship).
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : vyutthaane yaashchittavRRittayastadavishiShTavRRittiH puruShaH. tathaa cha suutram—‘ekameva darshanam, khyaatireva darshanam’ iti. chittamayaskaantamaNikalpa.m sannidhimaatropakaari dRRishyatvena sva.m bhavati puruShasya svaaminaH. tasmaachchittavRRittibodhe puruShasyaanaadiH sambandho hetuH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (vyutthaane) In the state of outgoing activity of mind i.e., in the states other than that of restrained state of mind (puruShaH) the Soul (tada-vishiShTa-vrittiH) appears in the same form of modifications (yaaH) as (chitta-vrittayaH) the modifications = affairs are present in the mind. (tathaa cha suutram) And so, is the aphorism of Panchashikha —
(ekameva darshanam) Knowledge is but one, (khyaatiH) knowing of mental modifications (eva) alone (darshanam) is knowledge i.e., the Soul appears in the form of mental modifications.
(chittam) The mind is (ayaskaanta-maNi-kalpam) like a magnet (sannidhimaatra-upakaari) benefactor to the Soul by nearness alone, so, (drishyatvena) being the object of viewing = knowing, it (bhavati) becomes (svam) the possession = property of (puruShasya svaaminaH) its lord i.e., the Soul.
(tasmaat chitta-vrittiH bhodhe) Therefore, in knowing the mental modifications by the Soul (hetuH) the reason is (anaadiH sambandhaH) the eternal relationship of (puruShasya) the Soul with the mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the restrained state of mind, the devotee by being existing in the form of self stands in the conscious form of the GOD. But the yogi cannot remain in the restrained state of mind forever, so, at the time of outward movement of mind of the Yogi, and for all those persons who are not Yogi = devotee and their modifications are related to worldly objects only, what is the position of the Soul? Though the Soul is a conscious object only but does not appear so, then how is He? This question is answered in this aphorism.
At the time of worldly affairs, he (Soul) appears as the form of mental modifications. As are the modifications of the mind, so, is the form of the Soul. In worldly affairs, as the modifications of calmness, terrible, and stupid i.e., pleasure, pain, and illusion exist in the mind; the Soul considers himself in the same way i.e., he believes as of the position of calmness, terribleness, and stupid-ness or by the pleasure, pain, and illusion he considers himself as happy, sad and ignorant, and acts = behaves accordingly. The Soul not leaving his conscious form in any case, but at the moments of anger thinks "I am angry"; at the time of illusion thinks "I am deluded"; at the time of experience of pleasure thinks "I am happy"; on receiving pain thinks "I am sad"; on being effected by ignorance thinks "I am ignorant"; on becoming calm thinks "I am calm"; on being effected by stupid-ness thinks "I am stupid"; on being effected by defects, filth thinks "I am filthy" etc.; in this way by change of modifications of the mind, he considers himself accordingly.
In this regard this is to be understood that one who is a yogi = devotee his modifications during worldly affairs are calm, firmly fixed in righteousness, shining with the light of knowledge and wisdom, attached to truth, extremely sharp and swift, cognizing the real natures of the objects = subjects; and modifications of other persons are always affected by the world of joy and sorrow. Since the yogi has achieved the state of cognizance of self and gained the knowledge of GOD, so, by discriminating knowledge he knows that he is different from the Matter and thereby does not get affected by the properties and qualities of Matter, remains calm and unaffected by joy and sorrow. So, at the time of worldly affairs, even not standing in his form, remains calm, virtuous, etc. On the other hand, one who has not achieved discriminative knowledge, on account of nescience and by the effect of properties of disturbing energy and Inertia, considers the body, organs, and mind as his form and by considering the relationship of family i.e., wife, children, mother, father, etc as his part and form remains happy in their happiness and becomes sad in their sadness. In the same way on the gain of an inanimate worldly object, he considers it as his growth, and on the loss of these, he considers it as his loss.
The explanation given by Swami Dayanand Saraswati on this aphorism is worth noting, as it complements the Seer Vyaasa. On the face, there seems a difference between the two explanations, but in reality, it is not so. Seer Vyaasa said that at the time of outward movement of the mind, the Soul appears in the form of the modifications of the mind, whether a person is a common man or Yogi. The soul experiences the modifications of the mind which are as per the qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia. Swami Dayanand adds that there is a difference in the modifications of the devotee and the common man, as explained above. In the outward movement of the mind, the Soul appears in the form of modifications of the mind, but there is a complete difference in modifications of devotee = yogi and the common man. As per aphorism 4.7 - "karma-ashukla-akriShNam yoginaH trividham itareShaam" i.e., the acts of the yogi are neither virtuous nor vicious, however, the acts of other persons are of three types i.e., virtuous, vicious and mixed up. So, both the yogi and common man are equal, in the outward movement of mind, with regard to modifications but they are entirely different on the level of modifications. On account of the dominance of properties of Illumination etc., the persons are divided into the categories of disturbed, stupefied, distracted, and one-pointed states of mind, even by Seer Vyaasa. So, Swami Dayanand further clarified the meaning.
Some of the intellectual = authors had considered only the first three states of mind, i.e., disturbed, stupefied, and distracted states as outward moving states and accepted the appearance of Soul as per modifications of mind in these states only; and in the other two states i.e., one-pointed and restrained state of mind, Soul is accepted as existing in his form. But as per aphorism 1.3, the existence of the Soul in his form takes place only in the restrained state of mind. In the one-pointed state, cognitive trance is achieved which is four-fold. In the fourth category of trance, i.e., the Egoistic Cognitive Trance only, the Soul becomes the object of concentration and is cognized. While, in the other three trances, the object of concentration is Matter and its products and bliss.
In the Cognitive trance, total restraint of modifications does not take place and illuminating modifications exist in the mind. On the other hand, Seer Vyaasa had clearly declared - "sarva-vritti nirodhe tu asampraGYaataH samaadhiH" that there is total restraint of modifications in Ultra-cognitive Trance (aphorism 1.1). So, the Soul does exist in his form, only in the Ultra-cognitive Trance.
If for any reason, in the case of Egoistic Cognitive Trance, the Soul is accepted as existing in his form, then also, in the case of the first three categories of Cognitive Trances, on account of cognizance of Matter and its products and existence of various modifications and non-cognizance of Soul, these are to be considered only as an outward state of mind. Here it is to be understood that in the Egoistic Cognitive Trance cognizance of the Soul takes place through the instrument known as the mind, and GOD is not a targeted object and is not even cognized. If in the one-pointed state of mind "appearance of Soul as per modifications" is not accepted, then it will be against the real cognition i.e., perception, inference, and verbal cognition.
Since the "existence of Soul in his form" takes place in Ultra-cognitive Trance, the state of one-pointedness of mind is an outward state of mind as compared to the restrained state of mind. On account of Cognitive Trance taking place in the one-pointed state of mind, this state is better than the first three states. But even in this state of mind, "the existence of Soul in his form" cannot be accepted since this state of mind leads to a restrained state of mind. Seer Vyaasa has declared that - tadeva rajoleshamalaapetam svaruupapratiShTham sattva-puruSha-anyataa-khyaatimaatram dharmamegha-dhyaanopagam bhavati (1.2) in the state of one-pointed-ness mind stays in its real form i.e., it becomes pure and virtuous; the existence of Soul in his form is not said.
Here the meaning of "the existence of Soul in his form" is to be understood. In the aphorism 4.34 Seer Patanajali said "puruShaartha shuunyaanaam guNaanaam pratiprasavaH kaivalyam svaruupa-pratiShThaa vaa chitishaktiH-iti." Here 'salvation' and 'existence in one's form' are considered as same; and Seer Vyaasa and Swami Dayanand are also, considered the same. Cognitive Trance takes place with the help of the mind, where various gross and subtle objects become the base for trance, and in Egoistic Cognitive Trance, the Soul cognizes himself with the help of the mind. So, Cognitive Trance takes place 'with base'. Seer Patanjali had declared its argumentative and meditative forms as a "seeded" trance since the external objects became the base for the trance (Yoga 1.46). Whereas for salvation, the seedless trance is the precondition. Since salvation cannot be achieved in the Cognitive Trance, so, the Soul cannot be taken as 'existing in its own form' in this state.
‘Existence in own form’ is the target of Yoga (Yoga 1.3); if this position can be achieved in Cognitive Trance, then there is no need to advise Ultra-cognitive Trance. Since Seer Patanjali advised Ultra-cognitive Trance as an ultimate target in Yoga, so, this advice proves that the 'existence of Soul in own form' cannot take place in earlier stages of Yoga.
Similarly, in aphorism 3.35, knowledge of the Soul is advised by performing Sanyama on the notion of self, and by this knowledge, the attainments of pre-science, higher hearing, touch, vision, taste, and smell are born in the mind of Yogi (3.36); which are said as attainments in the outgoing mind but are obstacles for the trance (3.37). Similarly in aphorism 3.49 also, attainments achievable on cognizance of distinction between mind and Soul are advised, and in the next aphorism, there is the advice of becoming desireless from these attainments in order to achieve salvation. So, by advising the attainments achieved on the knowledge of Soul in the higher states of Cognitive Trance are said as obstacles (3.37) and advise of the necessity of desirelessness from these attainments for salvation (3.50) also, knowledge of Soul achieved in the Cognitive Trance cannot be considered as "Existence of Soul in his form".
Query:- Swami Dayanand while writing on aphorism 1.3 says - "When the tendencies of the mind are fully concentrated and restrained, the Soul finds itself set in the Great GOD, who is the Seer of all." So, it is proper to believe that 'existence in its own form' also, takes place in the one-pointed state of mind.
Solution:- The word concentration used by Swami Dayanand is not meant for the "one-pointed state of mind". If it is accepted, then the above defects will exist. Swami Dayanand had accepted the existence of the Soul in the form of GOD, which takes place in Ultra-cognitive Trance with the knowledge of such existence; this position is not possible in the case of Cognitive Trance with the knowledge as above. In this regard while writing on aphorism 1.2, he wrote "A man ought to first check his mind from those activities which are the result of disturbing energy and Inertia properties (Rajas and Tamas), and his activities should be dominated by illuminating property, then after restraining his mind even from those illuminating property activities, should concentrate i.e., should aim his mind on GOD and virtuous acts only, and restrain all other activities of the mind." Here also, the word "concentration" does not refer to the fourth plane of mind. His words are to be referred – as '... concentrate i.e., should aim his mind on GOD and virtuous acts only, and restrain all other activities of the mind.' Here the illuminating state of mind is meant for Cognitive Trance and then restraint of Illumination property is sought where one has to become desireless even from the Qualities and this is the restrained state of mind. In this state only, the Ultra-cognitive Trance is achieved. In this restrained state, only Yogi's Soul establishes = rests in the conscious form of GOD.
Further in the preface to the 1.3 Swami Dayanand questions - where do these (mental activities) rest when restrained? This question itself is clear that he is referring to the restrained state of mind not the one-pointed state of mind. Swami Dayanand had accepted the commentary of Seer Vyaasa as the only authentic commentary on aphorisms of Yoga. In such a case his explanation cannot be against the Seer Vyaasa.
In reality, all the modifications are of the mind, not of the Soul. The mind is said as like a magnet. As a magnet attracts the iron near to it, so, the mind also, becomes a benefactor to the Soul, by nearness. Soul tends towards material objects through the mind and sense organs; organs get connected to the material objects and grasp them; with a result, their knowledge and experience are gathered in the form of modification in the mind and are colored by those modifications; and the Soul being nearest to the Mind appears in the form of the colored mind since He is the viewer of the objects being presented to him by the mind. It is a fact that the mind, being the product of the Matter, is an inanimate object and cannot experience the objects; all these worldly affairs and modifications take place by inspiration of the Soul. Mind is treated as in different states of stupefied, distracted, etc. on account of various modifications, and Soul being the lord of the mind and mind being his property, Soul alone is experiencer and enjoyer of all these modifications.
The eternal relationship between the mind and Soul is a cause of such experiences. But this eternal relationship is eternal by flow, not as of Soul. Since this relationship ends in Salvation and holocaust; it exists during creation till the existence of nescience and ends on obtaining discriminative knowledge of the Soul and mind.
