Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : So, there are five types of modifications that originate in the mind of human beings. These modifications are of two types - afflictive and non-afflictive. The human beings whose modifications are towards the attainment of physical pleasure and against the worship of GOD, the modifications of such persons are with nescience i.e., afflictive, and those human beings who are devotees, as explained above, their modifications are non-afflictive and calm.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (kliShTaaH) Afflictive modifications are those which are (klesha-hetukaaH) born from the afflictions i.e., caused by the nescience, etc, and (kShetrii-bhuutaaH) become the field for (karmashaya-prachaye) the growth of vehicles of actions (=Karmashaya). And (akliShTaaH) non-afflictive are those which have (khyaati-viShayaa) discriminative knowledge of Soul and Nature, and (guNa-adhikaara-virodhinyaH) oppose the functions of "Qualities i.e., Matter".
(kliShTa-pravaaha-patitaa api) Even though flown from the stream of afflictive activities (akliShTaaH) they remain non-afflictive; and also, (akliShTaa bhavanti) become non-afflictive, even though (kliShTa-chhidreShu api) flowing from the intervals of afflictive activities (i.e., by seeing the effects of afflictive activities). In the same way (kliShTaa iti) the afflictive modifications remain afflictive even though (akliShTa-chhidreshu) is born from the intervals of non-afflictive activities.
(sa.nskaaraaH) Potencies = impressions of actions (tathaa-jaatiiyakaaH) of the same class i.e., afflictive and non-afflictive are (kriyante) generated by (vrittibhiH eva) the same type of modifications = activities; (cha) and (sa.nskaaraiH) from those potencies = impressions of actions (vrittayaH iti) modifications i.e., the same type of afflictive and non-afflictive activities are caused. (evam) Thus (vritti-sa.nskaara-chakram) the wheel of activities and potencies = impressions (anisham-aavarttate) turns round and round. On restraint of mental modifications, (tat evam bhuutam chittam) above type of (= i.e., with the quality of moving wheels of potencies = impressions, and activities) mind, (avasita-adhikaaram) when its objects are obtained i.e., not affected by the result of Matter's qualities = properties, (aatma-kalpena-vyavatiShThate) exists as pure like the Soul (vaa) and (pralayam vaa gachchhati iti) disappears on attaining salvation.
Vedic Commentary in English : Yoga is the restraint of modification of the mind. As per Seer Vyaasa, the cause of the experience of mental modifications by the Soul is an eternal relationship between the Soul and mind. Though the modifications are innumerable, these are to be restrained. So, how many types of and what are these modifications? Seer Patanjali says that the modifications are of five types and for the purpose of providing experience and salvation these are of two types i.e., afflictive and non-afflictive. Five types of modifications are explained in the coming aphorisms, here Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa explained the afflictive and non-afflictive types.
Afflictive modifications:- The modification which is caused by afflictions i.e., nescience, egoism, attachment, aversion, and fear of death; and causing vicious and virtuous vehicles of actions and residual potencies are afflictive modifications. So, the modification affected, generated by afflictions is afflictive. Because of these modifications, the Soul is involved in vice, ignorance, desire-full-ness, etc., and gets bonded in the vehicles of actions and remains away from GOD.
Non-afflictive modifications:- Modifications that manifest the discriminative knowledge of Soul and mind, opposing the functioning of Illuminating, Activity, and Inertia Qualities of the Matter, are non-afflictive. These are totally opposite to afflictive modifications since afflictions are not the cause of these modifications. By afflictive modifications, a person gets bonded by vehicles of actions, on the other hand by non-afflictive modifications persons get released from the vehicles of actions on cessation of authority and functioning of "Qualities". So, these are said as non-afflictive.
So, afflictive modifications create and cause vehicles of actions and residual potencies, and non-afflictive modifications are of discriminative knowledge and oppose the authority of Qualities.
Sometimes from the flow of afflictive activities, non-afflictive modifications are generated. As a person, who is involved in vicious acts on being affected by ignorance etc., sees the defects or being affected by some incident repents from the vicious acts, and becomes unattached to these, so, non-afflictive modifications get generated. Though these are generated in the flow of afflictive modifications, yet their cause is desirelessness so, modifications remain as non-afflictive. Similarly, non-afflictive modifications are also, born from the intervals of afflictive modifications i.e., from the opposite situations manifested within these. As a person, who is involved in ignorance and thereby experiences various pains, now wants to get rid of such pains, adopts the path of virtue on the advice of a Seer = true teacher; in this case, even in the interval of afflictive modifications, non-afflictive modifications are born which tends him towards discriminative knowledge. In this way there are three types of non-afflictive modifications - 1. entirely pure; 2. generated from the stream of afflictive modifications; and 3. flowing from the intervals of afflictive modifications.
In the same way, afflictive modifications are also, born from the intervals of non-afflictive modifications. As a person, who is involved in virtuous acts and living his life as per the teachings of Scripture, sometimes adverse positions occur in his life i.e., his young son or wife dies, met with an accident and suffers physical disabilities, pained by the opponents, someone causes criminal conspiracy against him, etc. and in such situation, afflictive modifications get born in his mind. He thinks that even though I was leading life as per the teachings of seers, and living life on virtuous principles, even then such type of mishappenings took place. So, he leaves the path of virtue and self-improvement on account of such obstacles. So, in this way, afflictive modifications are born from the intervals of non-afflictive modifications.
So, afflictive modifications are twofold - 1. entirely pure; 2. flowing from the intervals of non-afflictive modifications. Here it is to be understood that afflictive modifications do not get generated from the stream of non-afflictive modifications. The reason for this is that desirelessness is manifested from repent-ness towards the vice acts, not from the virtuous acts.
Afflictive residual potencies are generated from the afflictive modifications, and those residual potencies, again the same type of afflictive modifications are born; similarly, non-afflictive residual potencies are generated from the non-afflictive modifications, and from those residual potencies, again the same type of non-afflictive modifications are born. So, from the vicious acts, vicious residual potencies are generated and from those vicious residual potencies, the person is again motivated towards the vicious acts. In the same way from the virtuous acts, virtuous residual potencies are generated and from those virtuous residual potencies, the person is again motivated towards the virtuous acts. So, the vicious circle of residual potencies from modifications and modifications = acts from residual potencies is running continuously day and night. This vicious circle is moving not only in this present life but this circle kept moved since eternity, whenever the Soul had taken birth in a human body; and this vicious circle will move in future lives, till the Soul achieves the state of 'existence in his form' and attains the state of salvation.
By the flow of non-afflictive modifications, the mind having fulfilled its duties i.e., becoming devoid of properties of qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia, and its all the afflictions have been destroyed, exists as pure like the Soul and disappear = merges in its material cause (= Matter) on salvation. The question is - how the mind will be able to fulfill its duties, while the vicious circle of modification-residual potencies-modification is continuously moving. Seer Patanjali had advised the means of "Practice" and "Desirelessness" in 1.12 to achieve this target. Afflictive modifications are weakened; non-afflictive modifications are strengthened by Practice and Desirelessness. On the continuous performance of these means, by a similar type of residual potencies, the non-afflictive modifications supersede and destroy the afflictive modifications, and flow continuously. In this way, by a continuous flow of non-afflictive modifications, the yogi achieves discriminative knowledge, opposes the authority of Qualities, achieves Ultra-cognitive trance, exists in his conscious form and the form of Supreme Soul GOD becomes a person who has the present human body as his last body before salvation.
Some explainators have mentioned the concept of two types of afflictive and non-afflictive modifications for all five categories of modifications. Neither Seer Patanjali nor Seer Vyaasa had mentioned anything in this regard nor there seems to be any such intention. Afflictive modifications are described, by Seer Vyaasa, as born from afflictions and becoming the field for the growth of vehicles of actions. Unreal cognition, which is the opposite knowledge from real cognition, is clearly said as nescience. And in aphorisms 1.8 and 2.3 nescience and others are mentioned as affliction. So, the modification itself is an affliction that cannot be said as non-afflictive i.e., will not be able to lead toward the achievement of discriminative knowledge and oppose the authority of qualities. So, the modification with afflictions cannot be said as non-afflictive under any circumstances.
Some of the explainators have described these modifications as causing pain and destroying pain. But such an explanation does not clearly exhibit the meaning of Seer Vyaasa. These intellectuals have further accepted the two-fold categorization of all five types of modifications. If non-afflictive modification is meant for modification that destroys the pain, then modification of unreal cognition can never be said as non-afflictive. Since Seer Kapila in his Nyaaya aphorism 1.1.2 had clearly mentioned - duHkha-janma-pravritti-doSha-mithya-GYaanaanaam uttrottara-apaaye tadanantaraapaayaad-apavargaH. i.e., opposite knowledge is the cause of pain. When the unreal cognition is the cause of pain, then how this modification can be said as non-afflictive i.e., destroying pain?
So, the categorization as afflictive and non-afflictive modifications, by Swami Dayanand Saraswati, fully clears the meaning given by Seer Vyaasa.
In this way, the unreal cognition out of five modifications, being false knowledge, is afflictive modification only. Of the remaining four modifications, any notion of knowledge will be afflictive as and when it is related to ignorance. To accept the modification as non-afflictive it is necessary that it should tend towards discriminative knowledge and oppose the authority of Qualities. So, all other four types of modifications are to be considered as non-afflictive when they are not affected by nescience, egoism, attachment, aversion, and fear of death. Any modification that is affected by or related to nescience etc. will be afflictive only since it will cause the creation of a vehicle of actions which in term lead to a life-death-life-cycle for the Soul and the Soul will be suffering pains therefrom.
