Meaning in English : (pramaaNa) Real cognition [true knowledge], (viparyaya) unreal cognition [false knowledge], (vikalpa) imagination, (nidraa) sleep and (smritayaH) memory are the five types of modifications.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : Those five modifications are — (1) Real cognition, (2) Unreal cognition, (3) Imagination, (4) Sleep, and (5) Memory. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - On Worship)
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali explained the five modifications in the coming aphorisms. Here this is to be understood that all the modifications are classified into five categories i.e., real cognition, unreal cognition, imagination, sleep, and memory. All the modifications of the mind are covered in these categories. So, for the restraining of modifications, their categorization is to be known.
The other way of classification of modifications is explained in the last aphorism, which is in terms of afflictive and non-afflictive. So, either the modification will be afflictive or non-afflictive. The naming of the modifications is done in this aphorism. Afflictive and non-afflictive classification is to understand the causes of bondage and salvation and the modification-residual potencies-modification cycle. With the afflictive modification - residual potencies - modification cycle person is involved in the experience of worldly objects and remains bonded in the life-cycle. On the other hand, with the non-afflictive modification - residual potencies - modification cycle person is able to achieve the discriminative knowledge and thereby oppose the authority and functioning of Qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia, and with the restrain of all the modifications Soul gets established in his conscious form and is able to achieve salvation.
